First part of the book I'm working on

I look out into the open fields from the white stone ramparts, an occasional clink of armor on stone as fellow guardsmen move or readjust. The golden hilt of my short sword glints in the morning light, the air cool and crisp. The tower stands behind me as my fellow guards help keep watch.

A bright feminine voice calls out “Hey, Axiel did you hear? We took one of the towers back from the daemons. They pulled back and they were easily overpowered!” I turn to look at Merial, a beautiful warrior angel, her golden hair pulled back, armor and sword glistening.

“Oh yeah? Well, I guess we better be on close watch in case they retaliate. You know this tower is close to the front line.”

“After a defeat like that? No, they must still be reeling.” A cocky smirk spreads on her face as I chuckle.

“Yeah, I guess so.” I turn to look out when a sudden squelch comes from her. I turn quickly and see a large shadowy arrow sticking out of her throat, bright blood flowing down as her eyes widen. She drops to her knees as I rip the arrow out, the shadow magic singeing my palm.

“Don’t worry I got you.” I put my hand to the wound channeling light energy into it. Blood soaks my hand, but I feel the wound closing as a spear shoots through her chest hitting my armor and knocking me backwards.

I scramble to my feet drawing my sword as her lifeless body falls to the floor, a large daemon warrior pulling the spear back, blood dripping from the tip. His spear shoots forward, but I duck under it, the loud squeal of metal on metal ringing out as it scrapes against my helm. I shoot up and forward driving my sword deep into his chest, with a soft sizzle as his acidic blood flows out.

I pull upward opening the wound more, ignoring the burn of his blood on my hand. Over his shoulder, I see them: warriors of Hell, hundreds of them climbing the walls. How did I not see them coming? I shove his body off the wall and prepare myself.

“Stand strong brothers and sisters! The legions come but we will drive them back! We are stronger, for our cause is just and righteous. We must not let them take this tower!” I look back over my shoulder to see Jeremiah. I smile knowing we won’t fall.

Adrenaline surges through my veins, the world seeming to slow down. I tighten my grip on my sword preparing for the rush of battle when a sudden incessant beeping fills my mind seeming to come from everywhere. I turn to find the source but instead see my alarm clock sitting next to my bed.

“What the fuck was that” I stare at the beeping thing for a bit before reaching and turning it off. “What…” Now staring at my hand, scarred where the acid burned it.

“H-how could that be.” I blink a few times, but it doesn’t fade. “Must’ve burned it or something last night and just don’t remember.” I look over my hand turning it back and forth trying to make sense of it.

“I need to get ready!” I shoot up and run to the restroom, the dream and burns quickly leaving my mind.

“Hey, dork! Stop staring off into space and answer my question.” I jerk a bit, Sam’s voice pulling me from my daydreams.

“Heh, sorry about that,” I force a smile looking at her. Her blue piercing eyes quickly making it fade. “Didn’t sleep well last night so it’s hard to focus.”

Sam, my childhood friend. We’ve known each other since grade school. She’s always been good at knowing when things are wrong with me.

“So, answer the question. What happened to your hand? How’d you burn it?”

“I’m… not sure. It was just kinda like that when I woke up.”

“You don’t remember,” She questioned, doubt heavy in her voice.

“Well yeah… I mean I had this weird dream about fighting monsters or daemons… something like that I can't quite remember it. But I got burned by the blood of one and when I woke up the burn was still there.”

“So, you burned your hand by dreaming you burned it,” Sam scoffed, “Hard to believe that, but if you don’t wanna tell me that’s fine.” Despite her dismissive tone, I feel she wasn't quite ready to let it go. Something in her eyes told me she knows something I don’t.

“Fine don’t believe me. But, when I wake up from a dream with some weird tattoo or scar, I know who I won’t ask for help.”

“Forget it, let’s just go to the arcade.”

The rest of the day I couldn’t help feeling something was off; it was as if something important change between Sam and me. I saw her stealing glances at the burn a few times. I could almost feel this weird new tension between us that never existed before. It felt like a turning point, one that can never be reversed.

Batcat as father-daughter is so sexist and infantilizing. Selina was an orphan who had to resolve crime to survive. Andshe had to learn to survive before learning to care. She had to learn to let people in slowly, and let them go fast. She had to learn to put herself first, and take what life has to offer, be it merial things or experiences because no one would just give it to her. And yet they see Selina as inherently shallow and childish because she's not as "duty sacrifice blind loyalty" as their fav. But is Talia's weird codependent relationship with her father, and her wanting Bruce as a better less oppressive version of said father, very mature?

Yes! Making BatCat a father daughter relationship infantlizes and demeans Selina by putting her, a competent and very much adult woman, beneath Bruce in terms of experience. Because if Bruce is Selina father/father figure, Selina being Catwoman would be heavily tied to Bruce.

Skimming through their blog, their a full-blown Selina anti who's weirdly sympathetic for Talia with very little knowledge on the Bat Mythos as a whole. I don't mind people that dislike BatCat, Selina, or Bruce as long as they properly tag and understand that most of what they are saying is an over-exaggeration or false.

Many people dilute Selina as just a "hot thief" while pedestalizing other female characters, notable Talia and Helena, while ignoring that Selina is by all means a blueprint for "complicated, morally grey, independent female character" which loads of these characters are. Selina has a long ass history, much longer than some of the characters mentioned above, with many incredible stories that showcase her as a independent morally grey villain or anti hero (Selina's Big Score, Catwoman 2002, Batman: Heat, even fucking Batman: Year One), which people love to erase.

Honestly, people think their being slick when their hate on Selina for being: comfortable in her sexuality, having trauma relating to the fact she's an orphan/raised herself, being a villain that took time to redeem herself, or independent.

In other words, appreciate Selina Kyle.

There he's there!” Luffy shouts pointing to the mountain side. “Who is that with him?”

The pair charge forward to the edge. With nowhere else to go Merial grabbed his shoulders and jumped. Zoro closed his eyes waiting for the feeling of water until his feet hit wood.

“He needs help.” Merial tried to hold him up but Zoro was too heavy as he slumped forward. Sanji and Luffy caught him in their arms before he hit the deck.

“What happened?” Nami asked, opening the door to the kitchen.

“The Queen was going to eat him.” Merial said without hesitation. The two men laid Zoro on the counter and began to dress his wounds. “What did they do to you?” Sanji asked him. Zoro opened his mouth like he was going to answer but his eyes rolled back and closed.

“They drank from him, he has lost a lot of blood.” Merial explained. Nami grabbed a knife from the counter and spun it so she was holding it to Merial’s neck.

“Who the hell are you?”

“My name is Merial, I'm a selkie. I helped him escape. The Queen has rules. She can drink a man dry and achieve a forever life but not if that man is in love.”

“Why, what?” Nami screwed up her face.

“I've heard that. If the man is in love with another, he can't fall for her song, right?” Usopp said.

“So he admitted it?” Sanji grinned. Merial nods.

“What's your deal here?” Nami kept her hold on the Selkie tight.

“We have a mutual need, he wants his love, I want my sister. I know where the assassins are and you lot can get us in there.” She says.

“Err, guys, I can't close this wound.” Sanji interrupted the conversation, “it looks like a bite mark, but it's oozing something weird.”

They all gather around Zoro to look at his ankle.

“Oh no, I didn't know, that's what she meant…” Merial took steps backward.

“Three days.” Zoro whispered.

“You need to tell us what is happening.” Luffy said.

“She's marked him. When she said three days I thought she meant me, I only have legs for three days but she marked him. If he does not kiss the person he loves by the end of the third day he'll…”

“Turn to sea foam.” Usopp sighed. There is an old bedtime story from Syrup Town, about a girl who wanted to marry a prince. A sea witch gave her a spell, three days to kiss him before she turned to sea foam.”

“What happened?” Sanji asked.

Usopp shook his lowered head.

“No one has ever won.” Merial admits.

“Well this time we will.” Luffy grinned, “Now, who does Zoro love?”

They all roll their eyes and groan.

“A wedding gift for you, Master.” One of the Assassins stepped forward with a wooden box, decorated with leather straps. He clicks open the top allowing two sides to fall away revealing an orange fruit.

“A devil fruit?” Dalton smiles.

“Yes, Master the nummy fruit, we’re told it gives the eater perfect fertility.” the assassin's eyes darted to you sitting beside Dalton. He had dressed you in a long white dress, made of soft materials. The elbow length sleeves ensured that everyone could see the brand on your arm.

“We will make many recruits to our creed.” Dalton agreed with the man. He took the devil fruit from the box and handed it to you.

“Eat the whole thing, little Princess.”

You hesitate, and he grabs your hair at the back of your neck, wrenching your face towards him.

“Eat it or I'll make every part of our marriage hurt.” He growls into your ear. A tear drops down your face and you take a bite of the orange fruit. It tastes horrid but you keep going. The assassin who gifted it eyes you, a smile you had never seen within these walls graces his face as you ate. There was a strange knowing in his eyes, a glint of something that gave her…hope.

As the fruit went down you could feel a change in your body, a tingle that rippled through you from your head to your toes.

“Three days of celebration, my little princess. An assassin wedding is a grand affair. Today, my disciples bring gifts and tribute to their Master. This shows their complete devotion to me. Day two we eat! The biggest meal you have ever seen and everyone will eat and drink until they pass out. Day three, you take the assassin's vows and then the bedding ceremony begins.” Dalton explained to you

“You will be a prize I flaunt everywhere, just as it was agreed with your father.”

“My father?” You ask.

“Did I never tell you? Your father owed me money, he sold you to me as payment. It is too much I said, I would gain not only you but your children as well. So we would've given him our second child. Such a shame he died.” Dalton's eyebrows twitched as he smiled.

“Master?” A female assassin stepped up with a large gift in her hand. You turned away from them, closing your eyes.

“Ahh, wonderful! I do like swords.” You turn back and see the two beautiful katanas being presented to him. They remind you of Zoro and Luffy and the crew.

“What do you mean, I only have three days.” Zoro asked through staggered breaths.

“We just need to find y/n and everything will be fine.” Nami says with tears in her eyes. The others had nominated her to tell him. He blinked and tried to understand it.

“I can't just walk up to her and kiss her, she…she doesn't like me anymore.”

“Are you an idiot? You made a mistake, said the wrong things but I know she likes you Zoro. I'm sure of it.” Nami sat down beside him.

“All I was going to say was that I wanted to train her, so she could fight. Then I wouldn't be distracted.” Zoro tried to explain.

Nami pressed a hand to his shoulder.

“Hey it'll be okay, Merial will get us there in time, you can confess your undying love and then we'll kill a bunch of fancy assassins.” She laughed.

“You make it sound easy.” Zoro almost cracks a smile. They sit together in a comfortable silence for a moment.

“Why do you love her?” Nami asks.

“I…I don't know. She's kind, gentle, her voice is like…I don't know. Y/n is everything I'm not.” Zoro lets his shoulders fall, defeated by his own admissions.

“That's not true.” Luffy shook his head as he walked in. “All those things you said, I've seen them in you. You had no reason to save y/n, or help me and Nami that day I'm Shells Town but you did it. You cared for her, looked after her.” he tried to bolster the swordsman.

“You might be a Demon pirate hunter, but you're a squishy sea slug with us.” Nami laughed.

“I hate you both.” Zoro laughs and rests his head on top of Nami's.
