​Oggi vivo a Roma con Gianluca e Nina, nostra figlia. sono cresciuta in Australia,​ dove ho passato gran parte della mia vita. Li mi sono laureata in filosofia. sono quindi un autodidatta dell'illustrazione. Quando hai capito che l’illustrazione era la tua professione? ​Ci è voluto molto tempo, perchè ho dovuto fare una transizione dalla pittura (fin troppo libera) all'illustrazione, che è legata a un testo, non è fine a se stessa diciamo. Non avevo alcuna fiducia nelle mie capacità e infatti agli inizi non avevo nessuna (o pochissima) identità propria. ci sono voluti anni di delusioni e studio personale per arrivare a fare questo lavoro con più libertà. Il tuo linguaggio visivo è molto particolare, quali sono le tecniche e gli strumenti che usi quando disegni? ​Uso principalmente acquerello ​e matite colorate, ma mi piace anche sperimentare con tecniche diverse, inchiostro, gouache, pastelli a cera. Cosa pensi del tuo futuro da illustratore? ​Spero di crescere sempre, di imparare sempre. Nel tuo lavoro hai avuto modo di stringere collaborazioni particolari? ​Il mio primo libro illustrato è stato con Michael Morpurgo per Walker Books, un vero onore. ​ Perché illustrazione per bambini? ​Perchè ​l'albo illustrato forse è una domanda migliore. Non dev'essere per forza per bambini, anche se loro sono i lettori più importanti dell'albo illustrato (credo che in questo mondo lo si dimentichi facilmente). Trovo molto stimolante l'esplorazione di un 'testo visivo' che accompagni e che in qualche modo illumini il testo scritto. sono sempre alla ricerca di belle storie e bravi scrittori, perchè io non ho queste capacità (almeno non all'altezza di quello che io considero buona scrittura per bambini e non). Mi piace comunque raccontare storie con i disegni, e stimolare un qualche senso di meraviglia in chi legge. Spero di riuscirci. Secondo te, in che modo un buon libro illustrato può aiutare un bambino o una famiglia? ​Non sono un' esperta, ma credo che la lettura stessa di un libro insieme a un bambino possa essere di per sè un attività enormemente importante sia per il rapporto genitore figlio, che per la crescita 'letteraria' e 'immaginaria' dei bambini. E poi ho ancora memoria di quanto felice mi hanno fatto i libri illustrati crescendo. E non per il loro contenuto morale o educativo, ma per il loro essere finestre alla meraviglia. la capacità di meravigliarci ci spinge verso l'esterno, il magico, il 'tutto-possibile'. Descrivici il tuo stile. ​Questa è difficile. direi matitoso. sono decisamente nel filone 'matitoso' dei libri illustrati. altri aggettivi piu' interessanti sta ad altri darli. ​ La giusta ricetta per una illustrazione efficace. ​Riflessione sul testo o concetto da illustrare, studio dell'immagine, esplorare varie possibilità di composizione finchè non si trova quella che ci rende felici. non accontentarci troppo facilmente. e poi una certa armonia o equilibrio dell'insieme che è indefinibile. In questi anni, chi ti ha supportato e creduto nel lavoro che fai? ​A volte penso che non avrei mai fatto questo lavoro se non avessi incontrato Gianluca Maruotti, illustratore e animatore in plastilina, oltre che mio marito. Lui mi ha sempre incoraggiata senza creare illusioni. Tuttora​ mi è molto utile per le sue critiche oneste. Anch’io sono utile a lui nel suo lavoro, immagino. E poi la mia famiglia, gli amici, tutti hanno sempre creduto che avrei potuto fare questo lavoro, poi alla fine ci ho creduto anch’io. Quali sono i tuoi punti di riferimento nel mondo dell’illustrazione? ​Il mio mito è Miroslav Sasek. Adoro i suoi libri sul mondo, il calore e la gioia di quelle illustrazioni anni 60​. A livello contemporaneo ci sono molti illustratori che amo per la loro capacità di raccontare con le immagini: Shaun Tan, Carson Ellis, Isabelle Arsenault, Pablo Auladell, Jesus Cisneros, Aurelie Guillerey, Yara Kono, Joana Concejo e tanti altri. Se fossi libero da ogni vincolo... Cosa ti piacerebbe illustrare?
