whats wrong with ai?? genuinely curious <3
okay let's break it down. i'm an engineer, so i'm going to come at you from a perspective that may be different than someone else's.
i don't hate ai in every aspect. in theory, there are a lot of instances where, in fact, ai can help us do things a lot better without. here's a few examples:
ai detecting cancer
ai sorting recycling
some practical housekeeping that gemini (google ai) can do
all of the above examples are ways in which ai works with humans to do things in parallel with us. it's not overstepping--it's sorting, using pixels at a micro-level to detect abnormalities that we as humans can not, fixing a list. these are all really small, helpful ways that ai can work with us.
everything else about ai works against us. in general, ai is a huge consumer of natural resources. every prompt that you put into character.ai, chatgpt? this wastes water + energy. it's not free. a machine somewhere in the world has to swallow your prompt, call on a model to feed data into it and process more data, and then has to generate an answer for you all in a relatively short amount of time.
that is crazy expensive. someone is paying for that, and if it isn't you with your own money, it's the strain on the power grid, the water that cools the computers, the A/C that cools the data centers. and you aren't the only person using ai. chatgpt alone gets millions of users every single day, with probably thousands of prompts per second, so multiply your personal consumption by millions, and you can start to see how the picture is becoming overwhelming.
that is energy consumption alone. we haven't even talked about how problematic ai is ethically. there is currently no regulation in the united states about how ai should be developed, deployed, or used.
what does this mean for you?
it means that anything you post online is subject to data mining by an ai model (because why would they need to ask if there's no laws to stop them? wtf does it matter what it means to you to some idiot software engineer in the back room of an office making 3x your salary?). oh, that little fic you posted to wattpad that got a lot of attention? well now it's being used to teach ai how to write. oh, that sketch you made using adobe that you want to sell? adobe didn't tell you that anything you save to the cloud is now subject to being used for their ai models, so now your art is being replicated to generate ai images in photoshop, without crediting you (they have since said they don't do this...but privacy policies were never made to be human-readable, and i can't imagine they are the only company to sneakily try this). oh, your apartment just installed a new system that will use facial recognition to let their residents inside? oh, they didn't train their model with anyone but white people, so now all the black people living in that apartment building can't get into their homes. oh, you want to apply for a new job? the ai model that scans resumes learned from historical data that more men work that role than women (so the model basically thinks men are better than women), so now your resume is getting thrown out because you're a woman.
ai learns from data. and data is flawed. data is human. and as humans, we are racist, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, divided. so the ai models we train will learn from this. ai learns from people's creative works--their personal and artistic property. and now it's scrambling them all up to spit out generated images and written works that no one would ever want to read (because it's no longer a labor of love), and they're using that to make money. they're profiting off of people, and there's no one to stop them. they're also using generated images as marketing tools, to trick idiots on facebook, to make it so hard to be media literate that we have to question every single thing we see because now we don't know what's real and what's not.
the problem with ai is that it's doing more harm than good. and we as a society aren't doing our due diligence to understand the unintended consequences of it all. we aren't angry enough. we're too scared of stifling innovation that we're letting it regulate itself (aka letting companies decide), which has never been a good idea. we see it do one cool thing, and somehow that makes up for all the rest of the bullshit?

Panic creeps into the edge of your mind, blurring with the overwhelming curiosity that courses through your brain. The hallways are almost always empty, fully equipped departments sit covered in dust, waiting.
The rhythmic sound of your steps brings you little comfort. The echoes fill you with a sense of hollowness; you feel completely alone, but the hair on the back of your neck rises as if being watched.
You glance up at the black, bulging camera, as you round the corner. There is no as. You are being watched.
You reach a crossroads of hallways, and you pause, the crude map your department has access to appearing in your mind's eye. It’s 4 minutes to MDR. 8 minutes where you get to see something new. 10 if you’re lucky.
You take the right path, hands squeezing one of the navy wrist rests. It’s perfectly designed to fit with Lumon’s keyboard and trackball, the color matching MDR’s terminals perfectly.
Deliveries like this aren’t normally done like this. For any other special order item, Admin would step in to help distribute and keep your department safe from the others. And while that’s something you’re eternally grateful for, some itch in your gut had you grabbing the wrist rest and taking to the hallways while Farah’s voice echoed behind you. Her caution is appreciated, but John wouldn’t let anything happen to you. You think.
You come to a halt, your heartbeat steadily thumping in your ears. This could be part of MDR’s scheme. How they hunt.
Your nails dig into the squishy gel of a wrist rest. Cold, spiderlike fingers seep down your spine, before twisting around to claw at your stomach.
They want the map in your brain.
They’re going to take your map, eat you, and then hunt down everyone else. The thump in your ears picks up rabbit-fast. They’re all going to destroy each other if they get your map.
You think of John P. saying your name. Your panic briefly subsides.
He had called you pretty, and his eyes were a brilliant shade of blue…
You resume walking, albeit at a much slower pace. Perhaps you could learn from Farah’s caution, even if your trip would be well above 8 minutes.
The Micro Data Refinement plaque gleams next to the doorway. You lean your head in, surveying the department from afar. Four desks, arranged neatly in the center of the room, with dividers providing a false feeling of privacy.
Each desk is filled, and you squeeze one of the wrist rests. They look big. Big and bloodthirsty, and capable of eating the other departments alive, if they got a head start.
A head snaps towards you, a pair of bright blue eyes pinning you in place.
His hair is cropped close, save for a taller line that bisects his skull. He frowns at you, eyes narrowing as he stands.
“Who are you?” the stranger asks. You blink stupidly, taking a tiny step to properly stand in the doorway, neither in nor out. The stranger raises a brow at you, and you can’t look away, but you can see shapes around him moving.
Maybe they have fangs. You’ve heard of the pouches and the parasites, but maybe they have fangs too. Maybe you’ll go quicker that way as opposed to the gnashing of flat molars.
You hear your name, tearing you from your thoughts. John P.
He’s seated at the desk closest to you, chair spun around to face you. He's leaning back in his chair. His legs are spread out in front of him, and there’s a casual air around him. His mouth quirks up at the corners like it had the last time you saw him.
There’s a thick silence in the air, one that feels impossible to move through. You manage to take a tiny step towards him anyway.
“You got the wrist rests then?” He asks, gently, as if he can tell you 0.2 seconds away from bolting. You inhale, a company-approved smile painting your face. (Of course, it was obvious you were about to bolt).
“Yes, John P. The supply order was granted, and I thought I would deliver them.” He heaves himself up from his chair, walking towards you. Your fingers brush as you hand him the wrists rest.
You inhale sharply, but do not move, stuck in place, handing him the 4 wrist rests. He doesn’t seem bothered by it. Instead, he looks at the point of contact in an inquisitive manner. He brushes his finger against yours again, over the same patch of skin.
“Okay,” you say finally, voice high pitched and nervous. as you shove them into his arms. He snorts, and his thumb glides over the gel pad that still has the ghosts of your nail indentations embedded.
“Nervous, are we?” He asks, there’s a glimmer in his eye, one you don’t recognize.
A chill comes over you, and you take a half step back, head tilting slightly. You could probably outrun them, and lose them in the hallways. They should only know about a handful of departments, as opposed to your crude, yet complete, map.
John straightens slightly, having the insight to adopt a slightly more formal demeanor. “No need to be nervous, this is MDR. You know me, but there’s Kyle G., Simon R., and John M., but we call him Johnny since. Well.” He smiles slightly at you, gesturing toward himself. John tells them your name, and you take a better look at his department.
There are two you haven’t gotten a good look at. Simon has a medical face mask on, is huge, and looks like he could not care less about your arrival. And Kyle, who looks like maybe the most polite one out of the bunch. Fully capable of tearing you apart with his fangs, but with a kind smile on his face.
“Be nice boys. She got us wrist rests.” Kyle nods at you politely, and Simon grunts, before they both turn towards their computers again. Johnny eyes you, eyes still narrowed in suspicion.
“Don’t let them scare you. Promise their bark is worse than their bite,” John teases.
“Right,” you say slowly, raising a brow at him. The feeling like you’re under examination has evaporated finally, granting you control of your motor functions.
You gesture awkwardly to your delivery. “If there’s anything wrong with them, let us know, and I’ll see what I can do.” You both know they’ll be perfectly adequate. John nods at you anyway.
“Will do. You lot don’t normally make these kinds of runs do you?” he gently probes. You chortle a little awkwardly, feeling the fleshy meat of your insides on display.
“Normally no. But, I figured I should just bring these to you…”
It’s a lame answer that provides no real insight, but John doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, his little smile has grown wider, and it makes you perk up, something warm finally filling the cavity of your chest. You glance at his mouth, the curiosity you felt earlier returning.
“Will you smile for me? Like with teeth?” John looks a little puzzled, little lines popping up in between his brows, but he complies anyway. Relatively flat, save for the canines.
“Would you look at that,” you wonder out loud. “No fangs.” You wiggle your eyebrows at him, as his smile takes on something of a confused and genuine quality.
“My, my, my Distribution Supply. You are far from home,” Mr. Graves's voice rings out.
A chill over comes you, and on instinct, you take a step back from John.
Mr. Graves bears his teeth at you in a perfect smile, but the disdain in his eyes is apparent. “And you come bearing gifts. You know Admin handles that so you don’t have to,” he chides. A cold, predatorial aura radiates from him as he stalks closer.
“Yes, Mr. Graves,” you smile at him. MDR, you had never met. But Mr. Graves you know. You’ve danced this dance after each of your errors, learned to appease and flatter, and used the manual to protect yourself.
“MDR placed an order for wrist rests, which admin approved,” you emphasize slightly, watching as the coldness in his eyes intensifies.
“And when we stocked them this morning, I realized these items could be necessary medically to improve efficiency and aid in MDR reaching Lumon’s goals faster." Your mind goes blank as you mentally pull up the correct quote. "And as the handbook says, ‘Toil, as we all know, can be wearisome. A worker may suffer injurious pain-‘“
“’- of ghastly dehumanization, and no workspace is without its perils,” Mr. Graves finishes for you, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Yes, we all know the Compliance Handbook.” He looks at you stonily, still displeased, but knowing this single transgression isn't worth the Break Room. “Remember, these rules are in place for your protection. Please return to Distribution Supply.”
You nod at him but don’t move, turning to look back at John. His expression is guarded, whatever he’s thinking is behind a wall you can’t climb.
“Now.” Mr Graves says, irritation coloring his voice.
You nod again, darting out of the room, tail tucked between your legs and trying to ignore the sensation of eyes on your back.
The hallway is still empty. No sounds but that of your footsteps.
You flex the hand John touched, and in your short life, something akin to want flows through you for the first time.

Stronger than Code
The room smelled of polished wood and wealth. A long, obsidian-black table stretched across the center, surrounded by figures in pristine military uniforms and sleek corporate suits. Holograms flickered above the table—data streams, performance metrics, projected kill ratios.
Vance Aldrin stood at the head of the room, hands clasped behind his back. His voice carried the practiced ease of a man who had sold weapons before, a man who knew how to make war sound like progress.
"Gentlemen, what you're about to witness is the future of warfare. No pilots, no human error. Just precision. Efficiency. Victory."
A massive screen on the far wall lit up, showing a barren, cratered battlefield. The feed came from a reconnaissance drone hovering above, capturing every inch of the landscape. In the center stood a lone mech—painted in military grays, its armor thick and battle-worn. A Sentinel-class war machine.
Inside, Arrow sat in the cockpit of Cestia, rolling her shoulders against the harness. The pre-battle checks had been routine. She'd been told this was a weapons test, a stress trial against some combat drones. Nothing more.
"Telemetry reads fine," Cestia's voice chimed in her helmet. Cool. Steady. "No abnormalities."
Arrow exhaled through her nose, running her fingers over the controls. Her loadout was standard: the X-77 Arc Rifle sat in her primary slot, charged and waiting; Hydra Rocket Pods lined her mech’s shoulders, micro-missiles preloaded for rapid strikes. Adaptive Plating monitored her armor integrity, while her Reactive Shock Barrier was primed for emergency defense.
Overprepared for drones, but orders were orders.
"Any idea what we're up against?" she asked.
"Negative," Cestia replied. "No combat signatures detected yet."
Arrow shifted in her seat, gripping the controls. Something about this felt off.
Back in the boardroom, one of the military commanders adjusted his posture, frowning. "She doesn't know the details?"
Vance smiled thinly. "A soldier fights best when tested, General. Besides, the machines don’t need an advantage. This is simply a demonstration of inevitability."
On the screen, movement flickered at the edges of the battlefield. One mech. Then another. Then a dozen.
Arrow’s fingers tightened around the controls as her radar flared to life.
Multiple hostiles detected.
"Twelve signatures. No IFF tags," Cestia reported, her voice steady.
Arrow’s heart gave a single, sharp beat. Drones didn’t carry IFF markers, but twelve? That wasn’t a routine stress test—that was an ambush.
She swung Cestia’s optics toward the ridgeline ahead. Figures emerged from the haze of dust and distant fires—sleek, angular, and unmistakably military-grade. Their metallic frames caught the weak sunlight, reflecting it in cold, artificial flashes. No insignias. No cockpits.
Autonomous mechs.
Her stomach twisted into knots.
“This isn’t a weapons test,” she murmured. “It’s a goddamn execution.”

In the boardroom, the assembled commanders murmured among themselves, watching the autonomous mechs take formation. Their movements were synchronized, unnervingly smooth—no hesitation, no wasted motion.
Vance clasped his hands together, voice level. "These are the VX-99 Autonomous Combat Units, better called ACUs. Each one is equipped with onboard tactical processors, capable of analyzing and responding to battlefield conditions in real time. Faster than any human. More precise than any pilot."
Onscreen, Arrow's mech shifted stance, rifle rising.
"Now," Vance continued, "we see the difference between man and machine."

Arrow didn’t wait. The second she had a clear shot, she took it.
Bolts of blue energy streaked through the air, hammering into the nearest machine’s chest. The first few rounds impacted harmlessly against the armor—kinetic dispersal fields redirecting the force.
Then the machines returned fire.
Tracer rounds laced toward her, cutting tight, overlapping paths. The barrage wasn’t wild or erratic—they were boxing her in, predicting her movements before she even made them.
Cestia reacted first.
"Defensive pulse—activating."
A concussive wave burst outward, warping the air in a shimmering ripple. The first wave of bullets scattered, thrown off course by the disruption field.
Arrow took the opening and moved.
She fired a tether, the line snapping forward and latching onto a ruined structure to her right. The instant it locked, the winch reeled her in, yanking her out of the kill zone just as the next salvo shredded the ground where she had been standing.
Landing hard, she swung her rifle up and fired another burst—this time, aiming for the exposed joint seams. The rounds struck true, melting through servos. One of the ACUs staggered, its balance thrown.
Arrow didn’t hesitate.
A quick thought armed the warheads on her back, locking onto the crippled machine. The launchers barked, micro-missiles streaking forward in a screaming salvo.
Impact. Fire and metal bloomed outward as the ACU was torn apart. One down.
"Enemy destroyed," Cestia confirmed.
But the others weren’t slowing down.
Arrow gritted her teeth, pulse hammering in her skull. This isn’t a fight. This is survival.
And she was outnumbered.

Arrow moved fast, firing as she dashed between cover. The first machine had fallen, but eleven remained. They moved in precise, calculated patterns, shifting formation to adapt to her positioning.
'They’re predicting me.'
The ground near her feet exploded in a shower of debris as incoming rounds punched through the ruins she used as cover. She twisted away, but even as she moved, she could see how their fire adjusted—cutting off escape routes, funneling her toward open ground.
“They prioritize efficiency,” Cestia said, her voice level. “Minimal wasted fire. No redundant targeting. If you were stationary, you’d already be dead.”
“Encouraging.”
“But they lack improvisation. Exploit that.”
Arrow’s eyes flicked across the battlefield. The terrain was ruined, uneven—littered with collapsed structures and unstable footing. Places a human would instinctively avoid. Places a machine would process as a no-go zone.
She made her decision.
Pushing off from cover, she sprinted toward a fractured overpass, dust kicking up around her. The enemy adjusted, weapons tracking. But instead of taking the expected route—ducking into a crater or weaving between debris—she leapt onto a precarious ledge of shattered concrete.
The moment her weight hit, the surface collapsed beneath her. As expected.
She launched another tether mid-fall, the line snapping taut against a distant beam. The sudden jolt wrenched her sideways, sending her into an unpredictable swing just as the next wave of fire tore through the crumbling ledge where she’d been a moment before.
The AI hesitated. Only for a second. But that was all she needed.
Arrow twisted mid-swing, leveling her weapon. The shots slammed into their exposed sections, burning through thin plating where cooling vents had cycled open. The first machine staggered, systems failing. Another shot put it down for good.
A second unit moved to compensate—too slow. A fresh spread of missiles shrieked through the air and detonated against its side, rupturing its core.
Nine left.
She hit the ground hard, rolling to absorb the impact. Keep moving. Keep fighting.

In the boardroom, one of the commanders leaned forward. "She's adapting."
Vance’s expression remained impassive, but his fingers tapped once against the table. The machines should have overpowered her by now.
“The ACUs are not designed for reckless engagements,” he said smoothly. “They assess, adjust, and correct.”
Onscreen, the remaining units shifted formation. Less aggression. More calculation.
A bad sign.
Vance’s jaw tightened. He had spent years building this program, promising superiority without human frailty. If this test failed, so did his entire vision.

Arrow's breathing was sharp, controlled. Her armor’s cooling vents cycled hard, dispersing heat from the last exchange. Nine hostiles remained—still too many.
She flicked her optics across the terrain. The battlefield was a graveyard of past conflicts, rusting steel skeletons of vehicles and shattered structures dotting the landscape. A machine would see an obstacle course. A pilot saw opportunities.
They were repositioning, adjusting to her tactics. Their advance was slower now, measured. They wouldn’t fall for the same trick twice.
“Cestia, any openings?”
“They’re prioritizing encirclement. No single weak point.” A pause. Then: “But they’re maintaining even spacing. If you disrupt one, the formation falters.”
Arrow’s mind raced. Break the formation. Make them panic.
She surged forward, closing the gap on the nearest unit. The machine reacted, weapon tracking her approach. But she wasn’t aiming for it—she was aiming for the wreckage behind it.
As soon as she was close enough, she fired her tether, the line latching onto a rusted-out tank husk. She yanked herself forward at breakneck speed, momentum carrying her straight past the enemy unit.
It adjusted, recalculating—too late.
Arrow twisted in midair, weapon flaring. Close-range, full burst. The concentrated fire tore through its exposed flank, internal systems sparking before it crumpled forward.
The formation hesitated.
She wasn’t done.
Bracing against her landing, she swung her sights toward the next unit, already launching her next salvo. The micro-missiles streaked toward their target, detonating in a concussive chain reaction that sent two more collapsing in heaps of metal and fire.
Seven left.
But the others weren’t idle. They were learning.
The next wave of fire came even before she could recover. Precise. Unrelenting.
Her plating adjusted, reinforcing under the onslaught, but she still felt the impact shake through the frame. Warning indicators flared across her HUD. "Hull integrity compromised."
Cestia’s voice cut through the chaos. “Structural damage reaching critical thresholds. Prolonged engagement at this rate will result in system failure.”
“Tell me something I don’t know,” Arrow gritted out, throwing herself behind cover.
She needed an edge. A way to tip the fight before they wore her down.
Speed.
Her fingers hovered over the trigger. The Overclock system was a last resort. It would push Cestia past normal limits—faster reactions, enhanced targeting, boosted fire rate. But it would also burn through coolant reserves. If she miscalculated, she’d overheat.
She exhaled. No choice.
Her thumb flipped the safety.
“Cestia,” she murmured, “give me everything.”

In the boardroom, a technician’s voice broke through the tense silence.
“Sir, the pilot just activated Overclock.”
Vance’s gaze snapped to the screen. His stomach twisted.
“She’s overheating already,” the technician continued. “She’ll last maybe thirty seconds before she cooks her own systems.”
Vance clenched his jaw. She should be running. She should be breaking.
But instead, the screen showed something else entirely.

The world sharpened.
Time stretched, then snapped forward.
The moment the Overclock engaged, Arrow felt the surge—the mech responding like it was part of her own body. Faster. Sharper. Deadlier.
She was already moving before the enemy could react.
She closed the distance in a blur, her first volley ripping straight through a unit’s core before it could even register the threat. Six.
Another turned, attempting to adjust, but she was already behind it. Two shots to the servos, one to the head. Five.
The remaining machines scrambled, shifting to counter—but they were too slow.
Arrow wasn’t thinking anymore. She was acting, pure instinct.
The third target went down with a brutal strike to its chassis, molten metal pouring from the rupture. Four.
She twisted, barely avoiding the counterfire. Her systems screamed warnings. Overheat imminent.
But there were only three left.
She could finish this.

Vance watched as the ACUs collapsed, one after another, their superior processing meaning nothing against pure human instinct.
His stomach twisted.
The last unit tried to retreat—retreat—but the pilot wasn’t letting it go.
The screen flickered as the final kill was confirmed.
Then, silence.
------
Arrow stood in the wreckage, her mech battered, overheating warnings flashing across her HUD. Her limbs shook inside the cockpit. Her breath was ragged.
But she was alive.
Cestia’s voice came through, soft this time. “All hostiles eliminated.”
Arrow let her head fall back against the seat, exhaling.
She won.
She didn’t know what would happen next. Didn’t know what the executives would say, or if they would send more.
But in this moment, she knew one thing:
A mech is only as mighty as the pilot inside it.
And she had proven that.

In the boardroom, the silence stretched. The commanders exchanged glances—calculating, decisive. Finally, one of them leaned forward, voice firm.
“This program is a failure.”
Another nodded. “If a single pilot can dismantle an entire squadron, we can’t trust these machines to hold the line in real combat.”
Vance’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
The highest-ranking officer stood, brushing nonexistent dust from his uniform. “We’ll be sticking with human pilots. Meeting adjourned.”
One by one, the commanders filed out, leaving Vance alone in the dim glow of the monitors.
On the screen, the battlefield was still—nothing left but burning wreckage and a single battered mech standing in the midst of it.
His creation had failed.
And worst of all—they had lost to a human.

I just wanna know if it'll work!
The Monolith!
A massive perpendicular structure - 1 meter deep, 4 meters wide, 9 meters tall - with a perfect 81 centimeter diameter circle cut, with its center 64 centimeters from the top.
Naomi Glasnikova was grinning like mad. She couldn't figure out where to put squares of 4, 5, 6, or 7 in the design without overcomplicating things, so decided to just forego them. It'll be fine, she's sure everything will work out just as planned.
What is the plan, her fellow scientists from the Coalition species ask? To see if placing ominous black metal alloy structures around a planet with primitive lifeforms will make their brains go "Oh, this is different, I should... *think* about it. Yes. Thinking is a thing I can do now. Thus, with the power of thoughts I can look at other things and go "Oh, what if I did this!" and make myself evolve into a civilization (once I figure out how to come up with prerequisite concepts)."
Is the inner dialogue Naomi was having. Her colleagues, both Human and Alien alike, had long abandoned the idea of trying to talk to her about her projects. She would just get into this deep staredown with you while simultaneously not paying any attention to your existence. Her mind begins to race with the possibilities, the what ifs, who dunnits, why nots, etc., and after a few minutes of complete stillness she would suddenly rush out, writing furiously on her digi-pad, often bumping into chairs, tables, walls, other people, one time she almost vented herself from the station. They put a micro-tag on her pad that would wirelessly turn off nearby lights at any intersections that didn't lead to her office. She subconsciously veers toward bright lights.
This latest monolith project came about after one of her equally eccentric interns (nobody knows where they come from, she just seems to naturally attract ones with similar brainwaves or something) showed her an ancient fictional documentary about possible technological developments in the early 21st century. The image of this simpler monolith instantly embedded itself into her mind.
WAIT! I've got it! Four groups of monoliths arranged in different patterns. The group of 16 will make a perfect square. 25 a star. 36 a hexagon, and 49 a... hmm heptagon would be too similar, and it doesn't look right no matter how you shape it.... hrrnnn No wait, a seven layer circle! One in the center, fourteen in the outermost and the rest... I'll do the math later. The areas will need to be perfectly cleared and flat too. Oh! Line patterns on the ground itself. Ones that show core scientific truths! One of the primitives will surely one day follow the lines and map them out either in its brain or on a simple data recording apparatus and see Science! They'll be so stunned! Gotta write that down, get one of the helpful people (her interns, whose names or faces she doesn't even know, yet they don't care either. Look, it's weird, but their kind of non-relationship works out somehow) to begin production. They will need to be made of non-corrosive alloys, of course. Each with a different core metal though. But then the color might change. No paint, that is an unnecessary element. Hmm... Evolution will take millennia, hopefully a few less with my help.
Last month her focus was on making a fully transparent species of frogs to see whether they would go extinct due to being unable to see their partners, or overrun the ecosystem. Nobody has seen the results of that yet.
We also don't know what she's actually a PhD of. Her diploma just says applied robotics, and it is a legit diploma from the Henderson University of Greater Estonia. But her published thesis is on viral infection vectors in sub-tropical moths. We thought she might be a fraud, but the science checks out in whatever she has put out so far. Whatever she is, she is allowed to do whatever she wants. Like most scientists out on these stations now that I think about it.
What are we even doing here, other than... Science?
Mmmm, fuck it, unlimited funding. Let's go!

The Dream Hotel

The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami
this book was both emotionally difficult to read and simultaneously exactly what i needed to read right now. it's taken me quite a while to get through it because i kept having to take breaks, which feels indulgent given the topic and the dystopia we're living in right now. but finishing it has energized me to continue resisting in what small ways i can, and not let exhaustion and slow acclimatization trick me into anticipatory obedience.
so, this book. it follows Sara Hussein, a museum archivist in LA, through her time being held in a retention center for women flagged by the Risk Assessment Administration: a government agency in a near-future surveillance state that scores the potential risk of citizens committing crimes, and incarcerates those whose score is deemed too high. the reader slowly discovers, as Sara does, that it's not just every nuance of her internet footprint prompting her "high" score—the RAA's algorithm is also observing her dreams, data sold to them by the tech company behind an implant meant to help people sleep.
this is obviously terrifying, but not currently extant, technology in the real world. but what really steals the breath right out of my chest about this book is the way Lalami uses this one speculative element to highlight all the very real microaggressions and micro-oppressions, all the small violations of human rights, that pile up and pile up into mountainous and systematic injustice. racism and misogyny, but also the slow horror of incarceration. the women in this book are dehumanized, physically endangered, gaslit and persecuted by power-happy attendants and the relentless grind of capitalism—it's haunting to read, knowing that what they go through isn't far removed from what happens in real detention centers and prisons.
it's infuriating, it's depressing, but it's so compellingly written! Sara is specifically and completely real-feeling, flawed and afraid and angry, and all the other characters feel like fleeting glimpses of real people too. and i won't say it ended on a hopeful note, but...more like a strengthening note, a message that individual resistance does matter, can create small change that opens opportunities for bigger change.

Microsoft to invest $3 billion in India, to expand AI and cloud capacity
BENGALURU (Reuters) -Microsoft will spend $3 billion to expand its Azure cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) capacity in India, CEO Satya Nadella said on Tuesday, doubling down on a country with tech expertise and low costs to help turn such investments profitable.
The two-year investment, its biggest ever in the country, will also be used to upskill Indians in AI, a Microsoft spokesperson said, clarifying this outlay was on top of the company's recently announced plan to invest $80 billion on AI-enabled data centers in fiscal 2025.
India is a key growth market for U.S. tech giants, with executives ranging from Nvidia boss Jensen Huang to Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su visiting the country in recent months, promising big investments.
Microsoft, which has more than 20,000 employees across 10 Indian cities, is aiming to both help the local tech community develop and tap into its talent base, Nadella said at a conference in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.
He noted the community's contribution to Microsoft, specifically to their involvement in AI projects on GitHub Copilot, the company's generative AI-based tool for developers.
"India is the second-largest (developer community on GitHub) after the United States. In fact, it's projected to be the largest in 2028."
