How DC Tech Events works
The main DC Tech Events site is generated by a custom static generator, in three phases:
Loop through the groups directory and download a local copy of every calendar. Groups must have an iCal or RSS feed. For RSS feeds, each item is further scanned for an embedded JSON-LD Event description. I’ll extend that to support other metadata formats, like microformats (and RSS feeds that directly include event data) as I encounter them.
Combine that data with any future single events into a single structured file (YAML).
Generate the website, which is built from a Flask application with Frozen-Flask. This includes two semi-secret URL’s that are used for the newsletter: a simplified version of the calendar, in HTML and plaintext.
Once a day, and anytime a change is merged into the main branch, those three steps are run by Github Actions, and the resulting site is pushed to Github Pages.
The RSS + JSON-LD thing might seem arbitrary, but it exists for a mission critical reason: emoji’s! For meetup.com groups, the iCal feed garbles emojis. It took me some time to realize that my code wasn’t the problem. While digging into it, I discovered that meetup.com event pages include JSON-LD, which preserves emojis. I should probably update the iCal parser to also augment feeds with JSON-LD, but the current system works fine right now.
Anyone who wants to submit a new group or event could submit a Pull Request on the github repo, but most will probably use add.dctech.events. When an event or group is submitted that way, a pull request is created for them (example). The “add” site is an AWS Chalice app.
The newsletter system is also built with Chalice. When someone confirms their email address, it gets saved to a contact list in Amazon’s Simple Email Service(SES). A scheduled task runs every Monday morning that fetches the “secret” URL’s and sends every subscriber their copy of the newsletter. SES also handles generating a unique “unsubscribe” link for each subscriber.
(but, why would anyone unsubscribe?)

Re:Using 'Re:' in Blog Titles
<p>Following the post from <a class="a-post" href="https://rubenerd.com/using-re-in-blog-titles/" target="_blank">Ruben</a> I start imitating this idea and expand on it.</p> <blockquote> <p>“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”</p> <p>Oscar Wilde</p></blockquote> <p>The basic idea come from a post by <a class="a-post" href="https://brandons-journal.com/re-im-part-of-the-problem/" target="_blank">Brandon’s Journal</a> where Brandon response to an article and use the <strong>Re:</strong> prefix, like a email threads in the title of the post…</p> <p>And I add a microformat following the IndieWeb stuff for the response tags. baby caramel apples~ portion control by nature My husband says I talk like an old lady sometimes. It's because I say things like "marketing" and "tiding up"...hmmm. So, the other day, I was marketing with my sweet mama and came across "lady apples"- little tiny sweet miniature apples. (Note: this is an updated post, my mom has been under Hospice care the past six months. She's stable, but reading this is a bittersweet memory for me) These are the "Lady Apples" How cute?! Little things are always cute. Unless it's a little bag of cotton candy, that's not good. Did y'all know I'm little? I'm very height challenged at 5'. There. Secret is out. Like, if I ever meet Taylor Swift I'll look like a small child next to her. Same goes for basketball players, people over 5'6".... But, chances are, that's not going to happen. Such is life. I debated going all super-homemade-Betty-Martha-Crocker-Stewart and making homemade caramel to dip these in. But... with baskets of Halloween candy marked down 90%.... I went with some good old fashioned wrapped caramels. Key word here: DEBATED. Markdown got me. Speaking of really good markdowns... Halloween costumes were 95% off yesterday. I found a cow costume complete with a pink rubber udder. It's the perfect Christmas gift. Really. I'm going to wrap it up and give it to my hubby as a gag. And, he did say he'll dress up next Halloween. Tee-hee. No, that's not his only gift. He will get a shiny bell to wear, too. UPDATE: This post is being re-vamped and , turns out he has worn the costume on several occasions. I am thinking of banning my family members from reading this site for the next month... that way, I can tell everyone what I bought/made/found. For now, I can tell ya about stuff for the hubby and my mom. They both don't come here. Now, I've got five kids, they don't read this either, so I can share with y'all the basic Christmas I'm planning. Basic gift wise. But extravagant on the memories and fun. Instead of stressing over money and gifts this year I am doing the five thing route. Five things: - something they want (this is where the fun toy comes in) - something they need - something to read - something to wear - shoes Of course there will be the additional things from family , but that's what I'm committing myself- and budget to. Anyway, back to apples: It's not rocket science. You melt the caramels, and dip the apples. Place them in a nice ant-free location to set up. Yes, those ants tend to know where the sweets are. Grrr. There must be a shortage of ant food outside, because they keep coming to my house to eat. I felt my apples looked a little "naked" so I dressed them up with some melted chocolate: baby caramel apples #ratingval# from #reviews# reviews Print Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 10 mins Total time: 15 mins Ingredients 1 bag wrapped caramels selection of apples to dip; washed and dried. 2 tablespoons cream 1/2 cup chocolate chips, (to melt/drizzle) optional: chopped nuts, coconut, sprinkles to top Instructions Unwrap caramels and place in a microwave safe bowl. Schema markup and structured data
Schema markup and structured data play a crucial role in technical SEO by providing search engines with additional information about the content on a webpage. Here are key points explaining their importance and implementation:
Schema Markup:
Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary of tags (microdata) that can be added to HTML to provide more context about the content on a webpage.
Purpose:
It helps search engines understand the meaning of the content, enhancing the search results with rich snippets and featured snippets.
Types of Schema:
There are various schema types for different content types, including articles, events, products, reviews, recipes, etc.
Rich Snippets:
Implementing schema markup can lead to the creation of rich snippets in search results, displaying additional information like ratings, prices, and publication dates.
Enhanced Visibility:
Websites with schema markup may have higher visibility in search engine results, as rich snippets attract more attention and provide users with additional information upfront.
Structured Data Testing:
It's essential to use Google's Structured Data Testing Tool to validate and ensure the correct implementation of schema markup on a webpage.
Structured Data:
Structured data is a broader term that encompasses any data presented in a format that can be easily understood by machines. Schema markup is a specific implementation of structured data for web content.
Types of Structured Data:
Besides schema markup, other structured data formats include JSON-LD (recommended for schema), RDFa, and Microformats.
JSON-LD:
JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is the preferred format for implementing structured data, as it is easy to include in the head of HTML documents.
Search Engine Support:
While Google is the primary supporter of schema markup, other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex also recognize and use structured data to enhance search results.
Semantic Context:
Structured data provides a semantic context to the content, helping search engines establish relationships and better understand the entities mentioned on a webpage.
Dynamic Content:
Dynamic content, such as events, can benefit significantly from structured data as it helps search engines identify key details like event dates, locations, and performers.
In summary, implementing schema markup with structured data is a best practice in technical SEO, as it provides search engines with the context needed to better understand and present web content in search results, ultimately improving the visibility and user experience of a website.

What are post kinds?

I needed a way to have a decent taxonomy for my posts on this incarnation of the blog, especially given its social features. A few places I hang out in online were using a dead-simple method for categorizing their posts and making it easy to find the stuff they saved later on, called Post Kinds.
Post kinds are a way of categorizing different types of posts on the web, based on the IndieWeb standards1. Hang on, let me explain that too– The IndieWeb is a movement that advocates for people to own their own data and identity online, rather than relying on third-party platforms2. Post kinds can help users express themselves in various ways, such as replying, liking, bookmarking, reading, listening, watching, and more3. Post kinds also enable richer interactions between websites, by using webmentions and microformats to send and receive notifications and display contextual information4.
The tool I’m using to make this easier is David Shanske’s Post Kinds Plugin for WordPress5. This plugin adds a taxonomy called Kind to the WordPress editor and allows users to fill in the blanks for the relevant properties of each kind of post. It also automatically parses URLs to display rich context and integrates with the Webmention Plugin to send and receive webmentions5.
Post kinds are not the same as post formats, which are a WordPress feature that allows users to choose a format for their posts, such as standard, aside, image, video, etc. Post formats are more limited and less semantic than post kinds, and do not support the IndieWeb standards3.
While not implemented on my site, post kinds can be determined by an algorithm called Post Type Discovery, which looks at the content properties and values of a post, rather than an explicit post type property. This way, the post kind can be inferred from the combination of text, media, and other elements in the post, without requiring the user to specify what kind of post they are creating4.
Post kinds are a powerful and flexible way of creating and interacting with content on the web, following the IndieWeb principles of owning your data, expressing yourself, and connecting with others, which is definitely what I’m trying to achieve with this webiste.
Let’s take a look at the different kinds of post kinds that I’m actively using:
📰Article – traditional long form content: a post with an explicit title and body 🗒Note – a short quick thought, usually under 200 words and without a title ↩Reply – a reply to content typically on another site ♻Repost – a complete reposting of content from another site ♥Like – a way to pay compliments to the original post/poster of external content ⭐Favorite – special to the author 🔖Bookmark – storing a link/bookmark for personal use or sharing with others 🖼Photo – a post with an embedded image/photo as its primary focus 🎞Video – a post with an embedded video as its primary focus 🔊Audio – a post with an embedded audio file as its primary focus 🗓RSVP – a specific type of reply regarding attendance of an event 🎧Listen – listening to audio; sometimes called a scrobble 📺Watch – watching a movie, television show, online video, play or other visual-based event 📍Checkin – identifying you are at a particular geographic location 🎮Play – playing a game 🍖Eat – what you are eating, perhaps for a food diary ☕Drink – what you are drinking, perhaps for a food dairy 🎵Jam – a particularly personally meaningful song (a listen with added emphasis) 📚Read – reading a book, magazine, newspaper, other physical document, or online post 🗨Quote – quoted content ⚠Issue – Issue is a special kind of article post that is a reply to typically some source code, though potentially anything at a source control repository. 🤔Review – A review is a post evaluating a product or service, usually involving a written description, sometimes with summary numerical evaluations, also known as just a rating. 🛠Craft – Activities like knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, wood working, restoration, 3d printing…the activity of building something.
Have a look-see at the different posts above (some aren’t populated yet) and you’ll get a sense for what I’m trying to do here.
Also give me some advice– how do you/would you do it? Use the syndication links (next to the 📡🔀 icon) and let me know.

How do you use geo tagging?
How Do You Use Geo Tagging in Your Photography?
Without you even realizing it, many of the photos that you take on your smartphone or camera use geo tagging. This feature is useful for a number of reasons.
Adding a location to a photo or status update is simple on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. It also allows you to share your experiences with friends and followers.
Search engine marketing
Geo tagging is an important tool to use in search engine marketing. It can help your website rank higher in search engines by showing that you are relevant to a particular location. This can be especially helpful for retail and tourism websites.
The Geo microformat is a simple markup to convey latitude and longitude with webpages. It’s used for things where hCards would make less sense: ATMs, scenic overlooks, parks, rest stops, historical markers and camp sites.
It’s a great way to build brand awareness and connect with your audience. Geotagging can also help you learn important information about your audience’s needs and interests, which can help you improve your marketing efforts. It can even help you develop a better strategy for your local business. For example, if you have a restaurant in Cleveland, you can geotag your images to show potential customers that your food is made in the area. This can encourage more people to visit your restaurant.
Mobile applications
A mobile application can help you geotag photos or video clips, as well as add timestamps. These applications can also be used to create maps based on location. These maps can be viewed online or printed on paper. They can even be sent to friends or family.
The best geotag apps for photo sharing have intuitive interfaces that let you add photos to a map easily. Some even let you add multiple photos at once. They can also be used to record a GPS tracklog of your travels.
However, there are some privacy concerns regarding geotagging. If you share your location information publicly, it can be used by people with malicious intent. For example, if you frequently write a weblog about your home city, someone could use the information from the geotags to break into your house. This can be dangerous for your family and your personal security. It is also possible that your geotag information can be interpreted by spammers to send you unwanted messages.
Social media
Using social media to geotag photos is an effective way to get people excited about a brand. Tito’s vodka, for example, uses Instagram to encourage people to share pictures of their pets with the hashtag #vodkafordogpeople. This strategy helps promote the company’s goal of reducing the number of homeless animals.
Geo-tagging is adding geographic identification to photos, videos, blogs and websites. This information is usually contained within a meta tag and may include latitude and longitude coordinates, place names, and altitude. It is most often used in photographs, but can also be applied to other types of media.
It’s important to be aware of how far your reach extends, as it is easy to cross the line between sharing a personalized and relevant message and appearing creepy or invasive. However, if done correctly, the benefits of geo-tagging can be substantial. You can use it to target specific demographics or to increase traffic to your website.
Websites
Geotagging is a way to add geographical metadata to photos and websites. It can include latitude and longitude coordinates as well as place names or regional identifiers. This data can be provided automatically by a user's mobile phone or ISP, from search engine queries, from social media tags, or manually marked by the user.
This data can be used to develop highly targeted marketing campaigns for specific regions. This is a great way to maximize the effectiveness of your marketing budget.
For example, you could use it to build up hype for an event at a particular location. You can post pictures of the event on Instagram, for instance, and encourage attendees to tag them with your hashtag. This will expand your reach beyond your regular marketing audience and help you increase engagement. Geotagging can also be used to create local listings in search engines, which will make it easier for potential customers to find your business.

Search Console

No, I didn’t dependency-inject a microformats parser into the class just so I could call it $this->mf.
That was one of the reasons, yes, but not the only reason.
