I think it’s generally sweet that two of my favorite Mikey ships have a symbolism with their color palettes.

In the 87 show, Mikey’s love interest was an Neutrino girl named Kala and she wore a green dress and had bright orange hair. It matches perfectly with Mikey’s color scheme with him being green (cause he’s a turtle) and having an orange mask along with other orange wraps around his body.

And then we go on to Mikey’s love interest in the 2012 show, the time master Renet Tilley, and her color scheme consists mainly of shades of blue. Blue and orange contrast each other perfectly on the color wheel!

Question do you ship Leosagi, Leorai or others?

Ah! Well tbh-

03 Leorai and 07 Leorai I ship them, mainly because I'm a huge sucker for the forbidden lovers from different sides of two opposing parties troupe. Leorai also applies for the other types of media where they're not related. As long as they're not related then I like the ship.

12 Leorai absolutely not due to obvious reasons. This also goes for Rise Leorai cuz again for obvious reasons. Absolutely do not ship these variants of Leorai and I'll die on this hill.

I don't....really ship them. At least romantically. Like yes it's an adorable ship and I love the fan art people make but I just like the thought of Leo having a friend cuz honestly he deserves to have that. He deserves to have someone he can confined in like Donnie has April or Raph has Casey ya know? So it's strictly platonic in the Leosagi department for me.

I also ship Mikey and Renet from the 12 series as well as Mikey and Shinigami from the 12 series, cuz they're adorable as all hell and work well with one another in both pairings, as well as Mikey and Kala cuz omg how can you not (dude they carry little photos of one another help-).

Ramona absolutely in both the 12 series and 87 series cuz they're literally perfect and complement each other perfectly. April and Casey in basically every version that there is, cuz yes, literally been my OTP since childhood. April and Donnie and Casey from the 12 series (it can go as either an OTP or OT3 for all three of them). And finally I love the ship of Leo and Lotus Blossom from the 87 series it's super cute.

Oh also Leo and April from the 12 series cuz they're incredibly cute and I simply love the chemistry between them it's just so good.

So, for each tmnt series, who do you ship with who? Just curious!

I am a pretty basic and predictable bitch when it comes to shipping. I always ship me some April X Casey in just about every universe.

As a child watching the OG cartoon, I was so moved when Mikey and Kala had to say goodbye to each other, I have been shipping them ever since. I have a 2003 version and a Bayverse version of Kala, but both are humans from Earth instead of being from Dimension X.

And then I kiiiinda ship 2003 Leo and Karai. But not in the happily ever after sense. More in the 'there were feelings and it was complicated and we had to go our own ways' sense.

And then, of course, my ultimate blorbo, Mona Lisa. I will ship my lizard girlfriend with any turtle at any time in any universe. She is my emotional support character and seeing her care about the boys whether platonically or romantically and them caring about her just brings sunshine and warm fuzzies into my life.

Though I do want to stress I'm not one of those people that can't handle when others have different likes or pairings than I do. If you have different OTPs we can still be friends. If you have OCs, we can still talk about turtles together. I am a 'let people enjoy things' type of person and not about trying to ruin anyone else's good time with my personal preferences.

Brilliant question for this pair. Both LOVE pets, and Michelangelo, in particular, is an animal magnet. I do think they're less likely to adopt a pet together than individually find or gift one to the other. They're both the kind of person to say, I saw this little guy and thought of you!!

Their first joint pet is fairly tame . . . at least, by Dimension X standards. Michelangelo laments to Kala about having trouble finding a pet suited for the lair. So the next time she comes over, she brings an ant colony! If ants were silicon-based, ate rocks, and oozed highly corrosive acid (imagine the Star Trek Horta minus sentience and about the size of your fingertip). She reassures everyone in the lair that these are totally groovy pets even Neutrino children can care for, well-suited for the sewer climate, and won't terrorise the city if fed! She even promises to stop by more to check in on them (an excuse to hang out with Michelangelo that everyone sees through). After a while, the colony gets too big for Michelangelo's enclosure, so Kala takes half to keep at her place in Dimension X. I imagine they set up little video calls between both halves of the colony with Donatello's transdimensional comm and always keep the other's photo nearby so neither half will forget their other parent when away.

They get many, many more pets over the years. Most are exotic rescues and stray extradimensional life forms they foster temporarily. Occasionally, they'll adopt one for the lair, Kala's home, or—if they do well in both dimensions—joint custody. They never adopt reptiles, though. Having any reptile with them for very long stirs up Michelangelo's nightmares about his mutation. Or rats. Definitely no rats.

Whether Kala will grow out of her hot-rodding remains to be seen, but she never stops fighting for peace in Dimension X. Michelangelo is highly supportive and does his best to be a safe, fun place for her to rest and recover from the more draining and dangerous aspects of activism. He's happy to provide a sympathetic ear or companionably get uproariously mad with her. When he gets the time to travel, he finds he really enjoys helping her stage protests with Zak and Dask. There's just something about not having to disguise himself and seeing his words and actions make a difference in broad daylight.

(Side note: if the Neutrinos were in TNM, Kala would be thrilled at Mikey's radio show. The anti-establishment power couple.)

Kala is introduced to Maeverse super early on! In it’s hypothetical season two, she ends up on earth and be friends the turtles for a little mini arc, being one of their first exposures to the larger scale of the worldbuilding. Like in 87, her home in Dimension X is overrun by war and constant fighting that she just can’t stand, so when she’s on earth she gets practically addicted to the feeling of freedom and never wants to leave, especially when her and Mikey really hit it off due to her bubbly and fun loving personality. Eventually though, Dask and Zak show up and beg Kala for her help in the rebellion, and when faced with the fact her home is being destroyed while she’s out here enjoying herself, she reluctantly but determinedly leaves. She doesn’t appear again for a while, until Mikey meets her again when he ends up in Dimension X and discovers the full extent of what the Krang have been doing to Kalas home.

Oh, also Kala, Shini and Renet start a girl band-

Next is Mona Lisa! She’s a human turned axolotl mutant, who was abducted one day by Captain Filch (who in this is a space pirate!) and even though she escapes, she stays in space both to put a stop to him and because, well. Out in space she knows she fits in with every other alien now. She’s scared of returning home, because she knows she won’t be able to get her own life back and she doesn’t want to face the potential rejection from her family at the sight of her as a mutant. It’s only after she meets Raphael and Filch is defeated that she eventually gets the courage to return to her planet. Outside of that though, she’s very much a trickster who loves making one liners, with a passion for science. Her and Raphael share a love for standing up and fighting against people in power doing the wrong thing, but she likes to take the long con, planned out route in contrast to Raphael just storming into things pfft

And then finally! Lotus! Lotus is very new to Maeverse in comparison to Kala and Mona, so I don’t have tooooo much for her yet, but I already adore her inclusion to the worlds character roster AHA

Her backstory as of now is very, mysterious, in the sense that none of the characters really know anything about her, but she’ll always appear in episodes whenever the turtles least expect her. If they travel to a new location, there’s a 60% chance Lotus is already there. I posted her first sketch sheet a bit ago, but in that I basically said that the rule for her character is that she can be literally anywhere a plot is happening, it just needs to make sense that she could be hired by someone to get there. She’s not really an antagonist, it’s more of a playful “fancy seeing you here!” situation where her goals will either align with the turtles or clash, she’s not a bad person by any means and honestly has no hard feelings towards the turtles, she just makes it very clear she always prioritise her job.

“Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X”

Season 1, Episode 4

A trio of rock 'n' roll teenagers arrive in New York via the Technodrome's dimensional portal and cause chaos.

“Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X” is episode four of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As with the rest of this first year of episodes, David Wise and Patti Howeth are co-credited as writers for this adventure.

We pick things up following the events of “A Thing About Rats”, with the Turtles lugging Baxter’s van up to the top floor of a building where his workshop is located. Mikey questions what will happen if the scientist returns to find them pulling apart his vehicle, but is assured by Raphael that “the authorities didn’t appreciate it when he tried to take over the city with his mouser robots”. Wait, did he? Certainly April’s apartment building was destroyed alongside portions of the sewers, but Baxter’s involvement was limited to coming up with the Mouser designs and creating the master control computer for Shredder (to some degree under duress). Also, given that the Turtles have just left Shredder’s mansion hideout and had defeated the Mousers a short time prior to the beginning of this episode, “the authorities” certainly seem to work fast.

Things continue to unfold at an accelerated pace as Donatello tears a hole in the side of Baxter’s van and is immediately able to assemble a swing-out seat. He questions why the Turtles must be the ones to take the fight to Shredder, only to be told by his team-mates that “it’s the only thing [they’re] qualified for”. 

In the Technodrome, Krang goads Shredder regarding his continued failures in defeating the Turtles, adding that he refuses to provide the Foot Clan leader with any additional technology until he’s provided with a body. Shreds again denies the request, his attention focused on his continued experiments on the other members of Bebop and Rocksteady’s gang, who are briefly shown to have been mutated into an assortment of different animals. After the conversation leads into Krang’s backstory – where he was banished to Earth for his war crimes – it dawns on Shredder that he could use the Technodrome’s dimensional portal to draw in new allies in his fight against the Turtles. A horrified Krang warns Shreds against this, cautioning that he has no clue what could emerge from Dimension X.

Donatello finishes his modifications, revealing the completed Turtle Van to the other Turtles and April – a tricked-out reimagining of Baxter’s old van that’s filled with tracking equipment to aid the team in their battle against Shredder. Now facing the challenge of getting the van back downstairs, the team fasten their seatbelts and endure a bumpy ride before emerging on the streets of New York.

Paying no heed to the warnings of Krang, Shredder opens the dimensional portal. From inside the enormous screen emerge three alien teenagers who share a 1950s aesthetic, driving a pair of flying hot rods. These are The Neutrinos, Zak, Dask and Kala, who quickly escape from the Technodrome. Pursuing them are the Rock Soldiers General Traag and Granitor, who are forced to make an emergency exit when their military vehicle collides with a wall. Rocksteady and Bebop view the pair as enemies and waste no time in opening fire. Meanwhile, above ground, the Turtles use the equipment in their van to track the current location of the Technodrome to beneath the World Trade—sorry, the “Global Trade Center”.

Shredder manages to initiate a ceasefire, but before he can talk to Krang’s rock soldiers Traag insists that they need to pursue the Neutrinos. Meanwhile the Turtles spot the Neutrinos flying out of a subway exit in their Starmobiles, and assume this must be the beginnings of a new Shredder scheme.

Traag and Granitor continue wandering through the Technodrome in pursuit of the Neutrinos when they happen to encounter Krang. Both Rock Soldiers are shocked by the sight of their leader, who looks drastically different than how they remember him due to having been separated from his body following his banishment to Earth. Shredder arrives and is admonished by Krang for allowing the Neutrinos to come through the portal. The alien brain explains that the teenagers are a menace, as they refuse to participate in the war that continues to unfold in Dimension X, and prefer to spend their time having fun.

While the Turtles pursue the Neutrinos in their van, Shredder provides Traag and Granitor with a Technorover tank to do the same. Our heroes use the van’s launcher to jettison themselves into the air. Landing in the Starmobiles, the Turtles assume control of the vehicles and force them to land. After confronting the Neutrinos, the team soon realise they know nothing of the Shredder and that both parties are on the same side.

Both groups (with April in tow) decamp to a clown-themed arcade, where the Neutrinos share their sob story about being pacifist teenagers in the war-torn environment of Dimension X. Before April can fully express her concerns about what else might have arrived through the Technodrome’s portal, a group of eyeball missiles tear through the arcade in a stunning tracking sequence. Confronted by Traag and Granitor, the Turtles and Neutrinos take to their respective vehicles, using their weaponry to immobilise the Technorover. As a wave of police cars arrive on the scene, the Turtles and Neutrinos escape to the Lair to consult Master Splinter regarding their next move.

Seeing the cops approaching, Traag decides to activate a weather satellite gadget designed by Krang. In a truly Wiseian moment, we see that the device has three settings, “fair with high clouds��, “mild showers” and “total chaos!” The General assures Granitor that within two hours, the weather generated by the invention will cause the devastation of the entire city.

Act three opens with Traag and Granitor attempting to steal a nearby pick-up truck as a means of escaping, only to be confronted by a group of cops and soldiers who make a fruitless attempt at shooting the duo. In the Lair, the Turtles learn of the existence of Krang, information that lines up with Michaelangelo’s earlier description of a talking brain that he encountered while the team were battling the Mousers. The Neutrinos and Turtles determine that they’ll need to act quickly to prevent a potential invasion of Rock Soldiers from Dimension X.

The assembled group return to the streets of New York via a concealed payphone elevator – I believe this is the only point in the series where this is ever used – and find the city covered in snow, which raises suspicions given that it’s currently June. Taking their respective vehicles, the Turtles and Neutrinos travel to the Technodrome, ultimately using the Starmobiles to fly through a hole in the side of the fortress. Donatello and Leonardo find themselves at the controls of the dimensional portal but are confronted by Rocksteady, Bebop and a group of Foot Soldiers. Meanwhile Mikey, Raph and the Neutrinos are fired upon by Shredder, Krang, Traag and Granitor.

After eventually being reunited, the Turtles take the fight to the Rock Soldiers, with Mikey taking an audibly brutal punch from Traag after his nunchucks are destroyed. He retaliates by pouring a barrel of oil on the floor, which allows the Turtles to push both stone warriors back through the portal. With the gateway to Dimension X only open for a short amount of time, the Neutrinos make the difficult decision to return to their own world. The Turtles look set to have a final encounter with Shredder and Krang until the chaos caused by the weather machine on the surface provides a distraction, allowing the villains to escape. The team take to the remaining Starmobile, with Leonardo using his sword to slice through the satellite and revert the weather to normal.

At the end of his rope after yet another loss to the Turtles, Shredder is seen finally agreeing to build Krang’s new body. Back in the Lair, April reads a bedtime story (“The Tortoise and the Hare”) to Mikey, Donnie and Raph. Leonardo enters the room clutching his sword and assures April that the other Turtles will need their rest, as tomorrow they’ll find The Shredder “and finish him”. Did—did he just imply they’re gonna murder Shredder? That’s one way to ensure the kids will tune in for the big finale of the mini-series, I suppose.

The Neutrinos are among my least favourite TMNT characters, a trio of irritating 1950s throwbacks who must have felt entirely out of place in 1987 and whose schtick seems positively ancient from our perspective today, another couple of decades removed from any time when the tropes they represent would have been culturally relevant. The best thing about them is easily the Starmobile (or Starcruiser), one of which will now remain in the possession of the Turtles, a plot point that will resurface down the line in season three’s “Pizza by the Shred”. Before that the Neutrinos will return in the confusingly titled “Teenagers from Dimension X”, the first of many follow-up appearances that will continue all the way up to the show’s seventh season.

I took a dim view of this episode on my previous watch-through, largely just because of the Neutrinos, but I’m re-assessing my position now. Whatever you might think of the guest stars it’s visually stunning, I would argue the best-looking episode of this or any other season. Everyone is beautifully detailed, and there’s an energy to everything that takes place on screen: action scenes abound where the Turtle Van bobs and dives, feeling like it has actual weight to it as it navigates corners. Scenes where the Starmobiles navigate the Technodrome remind me more of cinematic 1980s anime like Project A-Ko than the typical low-budget toy cartoons of the era, where 65 half-hours of television would need to be cobbled together by less skilled animators on a shoestring budget. That isn’t the case here, as the first season of Turtles exists as a self-contained five episode showcase for the characters and the toys to follow. Down the road, the producers will have to contend with producing hundreds of episodes of TMNT within deadlines to meet demand, but not yet, so it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate just how good the world of the Turtles could look freed of those limitations.

With the Neutrinos gone and the weather machine destroyed, the Turtles now look set for a final(?) battle with Shredder and Krang. That will take place in the concluding adventure of this first season, “Shredder & Splintered”.

For the ship bingo game, how about 87's Kala and Mikey?

To clarify: When I also picked “prefer platonic” I mean that if these two just stayed just friends I’d be happy with that too. That’s how well their dynamic works. Actually, pretty much ALL of Mikey’s romances through out TMNT can work both as a romantic or a platonic pairing.

Another underrated ship that was never brought back in future TMNT versions. Kala is adorable and I love how her and Mikey just instantly click. The fact they both carry around photos of each other to remember the other is also so freaking cute!!

I really don't get the appeal for turtle x human parings. I despise the incest, brother x brother paring Sorry it's just how I feel.

That’s perfectly fine. It’s been a thing going around since the creation of the original franchise and it’s got many supporters and many detractors.

Here’s the funny thing: Casey Jones was created to give April a love interest because Laird Eastman didn’t want fans shipping her with the Turtles. Laird went so far as to speculate on the four turning to each other for comfort - which would probably be influenced by turtle hormones as much as mutant isolation. Eastman suggested they were asexual but fine with sex.

Now, over the decades and different versions, the turtles had relationships. Mutants and aliens alike. Even humans. In Mirage there was Leo and a human named Radical, Mike and an alien princess (we don’t talk about Image). In Archie Comics, there was Raph and the fox Ninjara. In the 1987 Mikey was in a LDR with the alien humanoid Kala. And all throughout each version, Mikey is a helpless flirt in general. Especially the recent Paramount films where he flirts with April. Fans in each incarnation have formed “Ew, gross” camps and “Aw yeah” camps. Smut fanfic was made. A lot. Turtlecest happened, although there is debate over where or not unrelated roommates who call each other siblings boinking each other counts as such a taboo.

See… In human society, people who share DNA are frowned upon if they have sex because of inbreeding. If the turtles are unable to breed, regardless of their partners, that goes out the window. The Reverse Westermarck Effect in psychology posits that people raised in the same environment will develop sexual attractions, even if they call each other siblings, even if they aren’t related. However, the taboo against incest is so instinctively powerful that most reactions are knee jerk and horror. To me, these are turtles with human minds and biologically altered anatomy to be human, so that’s its own thing.

And then we just have that whole huge massive “humanoid mutant box turtles with human shaped genitals hidden under their plastrons via a slit and pouch” thing. I would say any possible idea of a relationship with anyone, in any capacity, for any reason, is up to the person consuming the media, aka the fans.

So, Kevin himself being involved with the 2012 show - and approving of Donatello crushing on April - represents a new canon dynamic that strays far from those first Mirage comics where an adult April was mother/sister. The Karai and Leo thing is even more fascinating. When the mutated turtles became humanoid, whose human DNA touched them? Was in the pet shop owner? Was it Yoshi? Yoshi became a rat. It’s possible that his DNA never touched the turtles. Miwa/Karai and the Turtles wouldn’t share DNA. Still, I know, it feels icky and nope for many fans, I know, why did they do this to us, it’s so weeiird. But the whole thing is weird. This fandom is sooo hecking weird.

So yes, please go ahead and feel how you feel, because you can and you should. It’s wild and extreme and and…turtles? Humanoid turtles? With humanoid crotch bits? Really? I have many additional questions, and also their heights keep changing waaauuggh.And this fandom will continue for 30 more years and fans will be asking the same questions! I literally have no place to judge, I’m autistically obsessed with the psychological character of Mikey and I love writing Hurt/Comfort fics where he gets stabbed and then hugged. I’m surprised I made room for a mutant OC girlfriend for him. :-D
