Soy Cuba was released in Cuba on 26 October 1964.
After the United States broke diplomatic and trade relations with Cuba in 1961, the Cuban government turned toward the Soviet Union. The film was financed by the Soviet government (collaborating with the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos), who named Mikhail Kalatozov as director, Sergey Urusevsky as cinematographer (the two had worked together on 1957's The Cranes Are Flying), Yevgeny Yevtushenko as screenwriter (co-writing with Enrique Pineda Barnet), and Carlos Fariñas as composer (who had studied both in the US and the Moscow Conservatory).
Soy Cuba was poorly received when it was first released. Soviet critics did not think it promoted the revolution enough, and Cuban critics thought it catered in stereotypes.
Over the years, however, the film's reputation grew, mostly due to the innovative and awe-inspiring technical achievements of the film, especially the camera work.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1989, poor copies of the film were shown in the US, before a major restoration and distribution rights were secured, and the restored film was released in the US in 1995 as I Am Cuba.
