Neon Genesis Evangelion

I am quite uncomfortable with how much the women are sexualized in this anime. In episode 8, we see Toji looking up Asuka's skirt and then Toji literally flash her. In episode 24, which it is definitely a sad situation, Asuka is shown naked in a bathtub. While perhaps the creator was not trying to specifically sexualize women, I still perceive it as such, and I think that there needs to be a change in how women are represented in anime and media in general.

There are again a lot of adults that are having control and negatively affecting the younger ones. In episode 16, Ritsuko wants to get Unit 01 back first before getting back Shinji, conveying how he does not care for his life more than a weapon.

We see a lot of people trying to impress others in this anime as well. In episode 8, Asuka is trying to impress Shinji, and throughout the episodes we have watched so far, Shinji is trying to impress or at least get approval from his father. There are negative consequences because of this, such as Asuka being upset that Shinji is better than her, and Shinji being quite depressed. This kind of competition for approval and being better also leads to Shinji messing up when the three Evangelions have to get into a specific formation in episode 16 but Shinji acts too fast because of Asuka pushing him. When Shinji is trapped because of the shadow angel thing, he is confronted with the fact that he depends on others' opinions and approval instead of just living his own life. The audience is directly faced with the moral dilemma of living life for yourself or for others. Are we really happy, or are we just trying to boost our pride? Shinji seems so unhappy with himself no matter what, and after killing the Angel in episode 24, he feels extreme guilt. He just suffers, and perhaps if he was more confident in himself, he could realize he might have been justified and also be happy with his own approval. Finally, in episode 26, Misato and Shinji both confront each other with the fact that they are both unhappy because they need the love of others and are scared that they will not get it. However, we finally get closure as he accepts that the only person that will finally understand him is himself, so only he can judge and value himself, not others. As the reading from Monday discussed, we see a lot of complexity and inward introspection with the characters, allowing the audience to really understand them and, therefore, learn from them.

ok sorry to go on but the fucking worst part of the waypoint evangelion watch thru (apart from a general disinterest in doing anything more than surface level trope read of the show which hey whatever this is a side project of a publication that never seemed to be doing anything but surviving behind the scenes) was the utter refusal to see misato as anything other than their put upon doing her best millenial queen hashtag mondays bitch. she does, in fact, try to put the moves on shinji!!! she is at her absolute worst!!!!!! shes fucked in the head just like everyone else in the series!!!!! you cant just reject the most revealing action she ever takes in the show!!!!!!! she sucks!!! she sucks!!!!! engage with it!!!!!!!!!!!
