binge-watched opla in two days and ADORED it, obviously because it was super well done and just stunning, but particularly because i’m south african and it was filmed there!! so SO many of the characters were played by south african actors (mihawk and nojiko stood out to me the most, though it is important to note that chioma umeala is also nigerian!) all in all, it was just really cool to see, especially since one piece means so much to me :)))

Since the Miss World pageant was yesterday...Did you know?

At the height of apartheid, South Africa was allowed to send two contestants to Miss World; Miss South Africa, who was white and Miss Africa South, who was black/coloured.

Today, Cindy Breakspeare is generally spoken of proudly as one of ours who won Miss World (she's also the mother of our beloved Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley) but learning the details now I understand why she wasn't largely celebrated at the time. She was, as we would say, a 'weak fence' choosing herself rather than taking a stand.

The Miss World pageant itself was keeping up extreme fuckry allowing South Africa's apartheid government to even participate let alone like that and I applaud every country that boycotted and sanctioned until there was enough pressure on South Africa to force change.

Unfortunately, few countries have that same energy now because many are actually complicit in israel's actions. This is why we the people have to take our stand and force the changes instead. We have to keep protesting, boycotting, calling out Eurovision, the Oscars and every other event that is giving israel legitimacy and a platform. Boycotts do work. But we have to put in the work.
