Rewatching "Crocoduel" for the first time after a long while made me realize just how unneeded Tigresse Pourpre was in it. It was genuinely just a case of Ladybug giving her civilian friend a miraculous to make her feel better, acknowledged and empowered.
But the battle itself could have perfectly fine gone without Tigresse Pourpre. She had no purpose there. The excuse for why she was there was that for some reason Ladybug and Chat Noir pretended like their space power up don't exist so they can fly up in the sky to the ship and then later on when said ship is diving towards the ground Ladybug tells Tigresse to "hold them [Juleka's parents] at bay".
But for real, if the episode hadn't forced Ladybug and Chat Noir to NOT have their power up with them (or even acknowledge that they exist) it legitimately would have clear-cut been Marinette giving the Tiger miraculous out for no reason as a little treat for Juleka to feel better and feel inspired by.
And I'm sorry, but as much as I love Juleka as Tigresse Pourpre - and thank goodness Chat Noir was treated well in the episode, thats RARE - but that really isn't the purpose for why the miraculous should be given out. Just like that Penalteam disaster of 4 new miraculous holder bc Ladybug agreed to play soccer for a while instead of solving the damn akuma, cases like this inherently devalue the miraculous and it's sad that Marinette's leadership is sometimes written in a way where the miraculous aren't allowed to be treated like the important and valuable ancient artifacts they are; and the way Su-Han did call her out for it in "Ephemeral" but it wasnt allowed to be taken serious at all cause he's a man who yelled.
This isn't "Paris comes first", this was Ladybug unnecessarily giving a dangerous miraculous out like candy bc she couldn't seperate her civilian life from her hero work.

In Crocoduel, when Shadow Moth says, 'And what could be worse than not being loved by your own father?'
Some irony there.

MLB Season 4 Character Analysis: "Crocoduel"
Introduction
Hey there everyone, I'm back with another season 4 character analysis post and this time it's episode 12. If you missed my last post, you can find ithere. For the new people who want to read this first anyway, in this series I look at the emotions, behaviours and thought processes of the individual characters in every individual episode of the characterization-rich season that is season 4 to outline the progress these characters have made in this season as a whole.
So "Crocoduel", we not only get another new hero in the form of Purple Tigress who seems to be really popular in the fandom, but we also get a follow up from "Truth" on Marinette and Luka's break-up and how it has affected both of them. It also tackles the relationship between Anarka and Jagged. So yeah, this analysis is going to be interesting so let's get started.
Character POVs
Juleka
"Mom, Dad, I'm sorry but TALK IT OVER INSTEAD OF ARGUING!"
Obviously since this is Juleka's episode, we're going to start with her. LikeMyleneandRose, she also had a character arc in getting her Miraculous and for her it was learning to raise her voice and speak up about her feelings, something Luka can learn from his twin sister. Hey, I found something they have in common as siblings! Anyway, back to Juleka's character arc.
At the starting episode, we see Juleka afraid of speaking up and letting people know how she feels, being pretty submissive when Alya and the rest of Marinette's friends begged Juleka to let them have her birthday on her family's houseboat instead of going to the movies like they planned to get Marinette to confront Luka and being asked by Marinette to try to get Luka not to be at his house during their birthday party so that she won't have to confront him and due to being to submissive Juleka accepted Marinette's request as well and felt overwhelmed. Her submissiveness was also the reason she didn't stand up to her father when she heard that he was giving her brother a guitar and nothing to her and if it hadn't been for Marinette, she wouldn't have talked to him at all.
But her learning to speak up about her feelings actually happens when she meets her kwami, Roarr. Kwamis truly are the perfect therapists for their respective holders. Roarr encouraging Juleka to speak up is what gave her the strength to be vocal about her feelings when she became a superhero and after she helped Ladybug defeat her parents when she kinda settled their feud by raising her voice.
2.Marinette/Ladybug
"But it will be so awkward. You know that Luka's in love with me but I'm in love with Adrien and every time we see each other he just ends up getting hurt all over again 'cause he knows I'll never feel the same."
Moving on to the Marinette-Luka breakup aftermath, starting with Marinette's side of things. After breaking up with Luka in "Truth", Marinette became very awkward with Luka which led to her wanting to avoid him because she is ashamed of having to break up with him and doesn't want to have him getting hurt all over again just because she can't return his feelings towards her.
When she realizes that she has to come to Luka and Juleka's houseboat for their birthday party, she panics due to this fear which leads to her to asking Juleka to make sure Luka isn't at the party when she's coming there, unaware that this was overwhelming poor Juleka. When she did realize what she did hurt her and could have by extension hurt Luka, she felt remorse for her actions and apologized like she doesn't whenever she realizes that what she what she is doing is hurting someone and even stands up for her when it appears as though Jagged was showing favoritism towards Luka by giving him and guitar and nothing to Juleka.
By the end of the episode she admits her mistake and settles things with Luka, officially becoming buddies.
3.Luka
"You know, it hurts a lot more not seeing you that seeing you"
Now let's look at Luka's side of the conflict which people seem to understand more. After their breakup, when Marinette started avoiding him, Luka felt as if Marinette hated her when in reality she was only just afraid to hurt him. He knew she had a secret that she didn't want to share and was completely OK with that. When Marinette showed up and they settled things between them by finally communicating which honestly seems to be the theme of this season.
Luka also finally communicates his feelings to her by saying that it hurts a lot more for not seeing her than seeing her which is great development for him. Hey, what do you know? Both the Couffaine twins spoke up this episode: Juleka with the argument between their parents and Luka with how feels about Marinette avoiding her so good job on both of them.
4.Anarka
"Jagged Stone, you really are a shipwrecker. How dare you come here and give my son the album that caused our breakup!"
Now we're going to look at the Anaka-Jagged conflict which seems to be based on an album they made which supposedly caused their breakup. From what I'm gathering, from Anarka's POV it seems as though Jagged left their family when he realized they were having kids because he didn't think he would be a good enough dad and to Anarka it seems as though he left her for his music career to raise the kids all on her own and that has to be pretty rough, hence why she never wanted to talk about it with Luka or Juleka.
When Juleka raised her voice and told them to talk out their problems peacefully, they both agreed to do so for the sake of their kids.
5.Jagged
"Caused our breakup? You mean the album that helped me get my life back after you left me!"
From Jagged's side of the conflict we can see that he was concerned about not being a good-enough dad to their kids and Anarka, not understanding these concerns, left him with nothing but their album which was the one thing that managed to help him get his life back after he became all alone. His way of coping with a problem was to channel the emotions into a song similar to his son and when he found out how much he had in common with him, it gave him hope that he might be able to be a good dad after all.
He shows how much he cares about both his kids, although it didn't seem like he cared about Juleka at first, by giving Juleka the first guitar he ever owned and giving his son Luka the album that help him rise up again after he was left in the dumps by Anarka. By the end of the episode both Anarka and Jagged admitted their faults and apologized to each other when Juleka told them settle things peacefully.
Conclusion
Well, that's the end of the analysis. Gotta say it was a pretty fun one since we had two conflicts and one Miraculous hero introduction. Both the Couffaine twins learn to speak up about how they feel and Jagged and Anarka settle their long-time feud. So if I missed anything about any of the characters in this episode, let me know in the comments and also let me know your thoughts on this analysis. Feel free to try to dig deeper than I have for these characters.

In light of the recent page of Scarlet Lady AU Crocoduel dropping today, I’d like to clarify for the number of my readers who’ve stopped watching Miraculous Ladybug before “Crocoduel” came out.
The explanation for why Anarka and Jagged broke up? Completely pulled out of my ass.
For the record, the canon episode (and season) never tells us why the two broke up in the first place. At most you get from Jagged Stone in “Truth” that he was “too lame” to take care of kids - he tours all the time, lives out of hotels, has a pet crocodile -  which was a pretty solid explanation. Anarka wanted to stop that lifestyle to take care of her children and Jagged was unwilling to quit when they were ahead, so they broke up.
But then came in “Crocoduel” with Anarka and Jagged both blaming the OTHER PERSON for the break up, which doesn’t go along with Jagged’s “I live the life of a rock-n-roller and wasnt willing to give that up” explanation. Thus, it’s still an unanswered question.
But despite that, it was kinda The Point that there wasn’t a Reason they broke up - because sometimes there just isn’t one. Things don’t work out, people don’t co-parent well, personalities clash, priorities don’t align. Sometimes there’s no One Event or Big Reason. People just forget why they started fighting but remember to be angry. Hell, that’s what killed Romeo and Juliet - a feud that no one remembered starting.
The only problem with this, and why I personally felt like I had to change the whole thing, is that it makes Jagged Stone to be a total asshat. You know what we call people who don’t take responsibility for the children they created because of their selfish desire to live a life of self indulgence without inconvenience? A Deadbeat Loser. Season 4 made Jagged Stone a Deadbeat Loser.
And I hated that.

Stupid MLB 'Rewrite' Lore Dump!: Jagged Stone and the Waifs of Wonderland
Luka Couffaine, the frontman of Vampire Revival and notorious cheater, is nothing but the spitting image of his father. The only thing Jagged Stone (or, as he was born, Jack Zimmerman) had that Luka doesn't is that he combined the two.
(whole ass fake article under the cut)
Founded in 1978, Jagged Stone and the Waifs of Wonderland owed its inspirations to the psychedelic movements of the 1960s as well as musical giants such as David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. Their first album, titled "Jagged Stone and the Waifs of Wonderland" was not a commercial success, but in recent years has amassed a following of fans who prefer the older psychedelic style of this album. In contrast, the second album, "A Kiss Too Far", was an instant hit that took on a much more "glam rock" aesthetic, helping popularize the style in France and Germany.
Much like his glam rock contemporaries, Jack Zimmerman took on a flamboyant, ostentatious, and occasionally androgynous style in his performances, and encouraged his bandmates--the aforementioned "Waifs of Wonderland"--to do the same. Each also adopted a stage name ending in "-ka". Drummer Anne "Anarka" Couffaine, Rhythm guitarist Ellen "Elvenka" Blackwell, Bassist Lucy "Lunoka" Müller, and Keyboardist Tori "Tonika" Blackwell are considered the most recognizable "Waifs of Wonderland", though other instrumentalists and artists have been featured in JSWW albums and been given their own "Waif Names" accordingly.
Aside from their music, Jagged Stone and the Waifs of Wonderland is best known for the sheer amount of scandal they used to further drive publicity. Zimmerman was reported to be in committed relationships with all permanent "Waifs" at various points in the band's career, with later testimonies by band members reporting that Zimmerman was involved with no less then two relationships simultaneously (though it was not confirmed whether these stayed within the band itself). This caused significant strife for the band in their later years, notably leading Anne Couffaine to formally leave the group in 1988, shortly preceding the births of Luka Marcel and Juliette Élise Couffaine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oh boy, there we go. if you got this far (or skipped past to get here), thank you :) tell me if y'all want to see more lore drops like this! mostly stuff for worldbuilding that isn't related to the main plot, obvi.
also, if it wasn't clear by the fact that i decided that Nino's name is now Nicolas Lahiffe... I like giving them all new names :) That, and because TWEOS is set nebulously around 2008-09, I changed the timeline of everything accordingly. :)))))

Yep, Marinette and Adrien telling their friends “don’t ask me why, but I need an alibi” is definitely happen at least once in a reboot of ML should be be a reboot and I am involved in said reboot. This causes their classmates to believe Mari and Adrien are in a secret relationship.
And here are some of the alibis their friends come up with
Alya- Mari was helping me make a gift for sisters
Nino- We were having a dance-off
Chloe- Adrien was watching Anime with me
Kim- Mari and Adrien were helping me get unstuck from a treehole
Alix- they were at the Louvre with me.
Juleka: we were summoning my grandfather’s ghost
Max- We were playing a video game.
Nathaniel- Marinette was helping me come up with designs for my comic.
Mylene- Mari was helping me bake cupcakes for a charity bake sale
Rose- They were at their Aquapony lessons (yes this is a Crocoduel reference)
Sabrina: my dog got onto Adrien’s lap and she kept growing whenever Adrien tried to move.
Ivan: We... were... umm... fighting a vampire! (Mari glares at him), you know I’m bad at lying
Marc: they were at my book club.
Kagami- they were helping me hide a body

Rewatching ML Season 4
Truth: Luka is fed up with Marinette lying to him. Ladybug is put under a truth spell and says that she appreciates Chat Noir’s courage, confidence and jokes. Chat Noir says he’s only that happy with her.
Lies: Marinette watches TV program about Adrien and says his life is awesome, even though sometimes he looks bored or sad. Adrigami scenes. Kagami wants to draw Adrien and says that neither his model poses nor Chat Noir pose is really him. She wants him to be more natural and vulnerable. A few times they almost kiss, but Adrien has to go to help Ladybug. Kagami is fed up with Adrien’s lies. More: Luka vs Adrien and Kagami vs Ladybug. Chat Noir sacrifices himself again.
Gang of Secrets: Ladybug and Chat Noir go to the cinema. Ladybug is frustrated with her love life and doesn’t want to talk about it neither with Chat Noir nor her friends. Marinette is fed up with lying and finally tells Alya that she’s Ladybug.
Mr Pigeon 72: Adrien brought Plagg a big bag full of cheese. He’s “lucky” his father is neglectful, otherwise he would take him to psychologist. Marinette, why are you so stupid (again). Adrien is turned into a pigeon. Adrien is so focused on Marinette that he hits his head when getting in the car.
Furious Fu: —
Sole Crusher: Hi, Zoé. Marinette is short with Chat Noir like Ladybug.
Queen Banana: Chloé wants to be a film star. Adrien wants her to apologise, but she refuses.
Guiltrip: Adrienette moment, Adrien makes googly eyes at Marinette. There’s a pink background, but it’s hard to say if it’s just Marinette who sees her friend this way—it looks like Adrien does too! He comforts Juleka. Chat Noir tries to kill himself. Adrien mocks Chloé.
Optigami: Marinette and Adrien are stuck together in the lift during Akuma attack and they almost reveal themselves.
Sentibubbler: —
Rocketear: Nino thinks Alya’s in love with Chat Noir. Nino tells Adrien that he and Alya are superheroes. Adrien is taken aback that Ladybug let them know their true identities and is worried that Ladybug doesn’t trust him. Nino says Ladybug thinks Chat Noir is disgusting. Adrien is sad during transformation.
Wishmaker: Adrien doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future and says he’s a model now just because his father asked told him to. Marinette and Luka notice Adrien is sad. Adrien again makes googly eyes at Marinette. Luka learns Ladybug and Chat Noir’s true identities. Adrien says that as a child he wanted only to fulfill his parents’ wishes.
Mega Leech: Adrien is shocked to see that his father lied to him about the advertisment. Gabriel treats Adrien’s image as his possession. Adrien is sad and angry. He takes Marinette’s hand during the protest. Chat Noir is possessed by the villain. Adrien notices Marinette is fascinated with the advertisment and isn’t sure what to make of it. Gabriel is angry at Adrien for joining the protest and sends him to his room, touching the wedding ring.
Simpleman: Adrien calls Marinette and asks her to fix a wing that he needs for a photo session. When I watched this for the first time, I thought he genuinely needed her help, but now I think he uses this as an excuse to see her (this isn’t his job to find somebody to fix the wing). Ladybug and Chat Noir almost give the villain their Miraculouses in exchange for sweets.
Dearest Family: Where did Gabriel get the amulet from? I guess my Disney+ has the wrong order of the episodes again. Tikki has an eating disorder. We can see a glimpse of her true form. Gabriel’s talking about destroying the old world and creating a new one, but I don’t think he’s the best source of information about how the wish works.
Crocoduel: Congratulations, Gabriel, Jagged Stone who abandoned his children for years is a better father than you. Chat Noir flirts with every new girl in the team.
Glaciator 2: Ladybug is angry at Chat Noir for his constant declarations of love and throws him in the garbage. Adrien decides to change. He’s sad and cries in the park. Marinette unsuccessfully tries to cheer him up. Gabriel almost sends an Akuma to Adrien, but when he notices it’s his son he stops the Akuma. Gabriel tries to talk to Adrien, but their conversation isn’t going anywhere. Chat Noir is destroying the billboards. How much cheese has he had to take with him? He doesn’t have any bag with him, does he have to go to a shop on every street? I love these Marichat scenes. I want to see Adrien being as sarcastic as Chat Noir here.
Hack-San: Marinette is in a hurry, but she should think about telling Chat Noir she’s leaving Paris. Chat Noir again feels that Ladybug doesn’t trust him. Sincere Ladynoir conversation.
Gabriel Agreste: Adrien brings ill Nathalie a meal and tries to talk to her about his problems. Adrien is compared to an imprisoned princess and Marinette—to a knight. Does Félix suspect that the wedding ring is Adrien’s Amok and try to protect him? Kagami and Félix don’t seem to like each other. Or this is how Félix reacts when he likes somebody. I thought Gabriel tried to kill Félix, but the Akuma goes to the fake wedding ring. OK, so this episode should be before Dearest Family. Félix is now sure that Gabriel created Senti-Gabriel and that he has the Peacock Miraculous.
Ephemeral: Gabriel’s touching his wedding ring when he’s telling Adrien to replace him at the conference. Su-Han tells Ladybug that she should know Chat Noir’s true identity. Marinette cannot believe that Chat Noir is really Adrien. It’s too early for the true reveal: Marinette needs to appreciate Chat Noir too. Marichat needs to happen. Again, neither the reveal nor Adrienette aren’t really problems, it’s the relationship between Adrien and Gabriel: Adrien loves him, but Gabriel is ready to hurt him to achieve his goal. Gabriel’s touching his wedding ring when he’s forcing Adrien to be Akumatised. More: The Reveal & Adrinette. OK, so the Kwamis confirm that the wish destroys the world and recreates it.
Psycomedian: The girls say there’s no love without friendship. Adrien again makes googly eyes at Marinette. Marinette, don’t listen to this clown. This time it’s Ladybug who falls victim to the villain and Chat Noir has to help her.
Qilin: —
Kuro Neko: Adrien feels left out by Ladybug. He gives up his ring and then changes his whole personality to be the Cat she wants him to be. But it’s not the Cat she needs. Plagg says Adrien can be serious around his father and Nathalie, so it’s sad that Ladybug wants him to be like that too. Ladybug says she knows Chat Noir very well while mistaking him for the Sentimonster. Plagg says Adrien is both Adrien and Chat Noir.
Penalteam: Adrien can’t play football.
Risk: Adrien says he doesn’t want to be a model and tells Lila he doesn’t want to listen to her lies. Gabriel wants to send Adrien away. Adrienette moment. Adrien says that it’s like an invisible force stopped him from telling his father he didn’t want to be a model. Félix says he wants to save Adrien.
Strike Back: Ladybug mistakes Félix for Adrien. If she knew Chat Noir’s true identity, she wouldn’t make that mistake. Or if Chat Noir intervened. Félix quietly says that he’s sorry and he betrays the heroes, but in the context of season 5 I can see he isn’t totally evil and selfish. Chat Noir stands by Ladybug and comforts her.

As I mentioned it earlier, I was going to do my ranking of ML episodes, because why not? So here it is.
My way of ranking is different from the others', bc how on earth am I supposed to rank episodes of the show where I really love every single episode? So I decided to go the easy route and ranked them by how many times I watched them.
Disclaimer: episodes in groups III-IV aren't the worst by any means! They're all good. It's just that I don’t rewatch them that often.
Feel free to ask for my comments about this or that episode.

Trying to think of what the Mendeliev's class getting retconned to be 12/13 thing would be needed to justify and I'm drawing a blank. At least with Luka's age retcon we knew why they did it; the only reason he's Juleka's twin was because people were discussing whether or not the 2 year age gap between him and Marinette was weird, when I'm entirely certain that (as was previously theorized) he and Juleka were originally half siblings and Jagged was only Luka's dad. So now they're twins and Juleka was held back a grade. And it's just weird on Juleka's part because outside of Crocoduel Jagged obviously has no interest in her.
They needed to drop Mendeleiev's class down specifically for Zoé. Instead of making her and Chloé close enough in age to be in the same grade(or even just saying that between school systems Zoé is at the same level to be put in her grade), they did that. So they're all 12 now.
Honestly Luka's age retcon wouldn't even make sense in other ways like.
14/16 is a /little/ odd, but is far from the worst. Especially because we don't know if it's the exact number. Luka is two years older than Juleka, but he might be a year and a month older than Mari, making their gap 14/15. I'd be more worried if they were strangers instead of 'this is my friend's brother who is a member of our social circle', but even then?
And! You know what show has a similar age gap? Avatar: the Last Airbender. Aang/Katara is 12/14(or 13/15 assuming they had a birthday during the series). We can actually get ML's age gap if we switch our love interests for Katara/Zuko which actually would be 14/16(or 15/17, if birthdays happened).
So yeah like. I genuinely doubt that the age gap is the problem. Especially since Luka was /designed/ with that age gap in mind.

One thing that bugs me in most ML Salt fics, apparently the world revolves around Marinette where everybody in the whole world (not just school, family etc.) just worships her like she's Jesus or a goddess, and just be her sheep where the shame/slander the class or anyone who dare hurt her. Hello yes she's liked but the world does not revolve around her!
Yeah I mean, everyone around Marinette loving and adoring her? That's just plain canon, the only people who don't like her much are antagonists like Lila and Chloe. But people treating her feelings and perspective as being the only thing that matters, to the point that her feeling negatively towards someone is the sole justification needed to join in on purposely trying to hurt the people who are supposedly "wronging" her, no questions asked... yeah it's out of character and just not good in general.
It's OOC for the class to be malicious towards Marinette anyway, even with Lila's machinations. At worst she might be able to paint Marinette as being a bully like Chloe, and even Chloe isn't really targeted by the class. So the concept that the class would bully Marinette back, even if they were fooled into thinking that she was a bully, is a complete fabrication. That's Zoe's backstory, it would never be Marinette's.
It mostly comes down to the author, to the narrative itself, believing that Marinette deserves special treatment and that her thoughts and feelings are more important than anyone else's, to the extent that they treat it as good and righteous for Marinette to go out of her way to rally people to the cause of hurting people who have been duped as some sort of vengeance scheme, often just for the personal satisfaction of seeing those people hurt. Generally the people writing those fics wouldn't agree that it was good and righteous if Marinette was the one duped, and the person who was framed for misdeeds then decided to hurt her for their personal satisfaction and pleasure.
I like that the show, while centering around Marinette, doesn't have the premise that the world does or should revolve around her. People love and care about her, but she's not the sole person who matters in their lives. It's one reason I loved the Miracuclass staying and comforting Luka in Crocoduel. He was the person who was likely to be feeling most hurt, so they let him know that Marinette didn't hate him and that they loved and cared about him.

Regardless of how 1 feels about Chloe and Lila, I think it would be a waste if Monarch didn’t hand them some of the stolen miraculi. What’s the point of depicting not 1, but 2 of the heroes’ female peers as villainous if you’re not gonna let them become dark magical girls full time after the big bad gets his hands on a bevy of the show’s resident transformation trinkets? The writers better not let Felix have all the dark magical girl fun.

Nino- We were having a dance-off
Chloe- Adrien was watching Anime with me
Kim- Mari and Adrien were helping me get unstuck from a treehole

Juleka: we were summoning my grandfather’s ghost
Max- We were playing a video game.
Nathaniel- Marinette was helping me come up with designs for my comic.
Mylene- Mari was helping me bake cupcakes for a charity bake sale
Rose- They were at their Aquapony lessons (yes this is a Crocoduel reference)
Sabrina: my dog got onto Adrien’s lap and she kept growing whenever Adrien tried to move.
