FEI WU/LADYDRAGON IS VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL (HINT ABOUT HER BIOLOGICAL PARENTS) MIRACULOUS WORLD Shanghai SPECIAL

I'll say something crazy MLB here, Fei from the Shanghai Special we know that she was adopted, so we don't know anything about her biological parents. But if you watch the special you can see certain details that make you think, look at these images and judge for yourself.

She says 3 children but in the dream where they want what they want, 4 children appear: 4? Where is the 4th or the 1st? Was the desire a fusion of what they both wanted? So is it Adrien who wants 4 children? Or could it be that Marinette's husband will be someone else?

Now look at this, because the Shanghai Miraculous special gives clues...who will be Fei Wu's biological parents? look

That could be said about the mother and now the father? Adrien or Felix? LOOK WELL AT THE TRACKS

This is very nice because if Felix were to have a daughter he would surely give her a similar name, and give her "wings to fly", something he never had.

WELL I THINK IT'S CLEAR WHO IT'S COME TO, RIGHT? HAHAHA LIKE STICK LIKE SPLIT.

NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED? WELL, I THINK THAT SOMETHING MADE THEY HAVE TO LEAVE HER TO GET HER SAFE FROM SOME DANGER OR SOMETHING, THE ONE WHO WOULD BE IN CHARGE OF LEAVING HER NEAR THE TIME WOULD SURELY BE ALIX, THE PROOF OR Clue IS IN THE BABY'S PRINT. ( This also confirms Felix as a father.)

LET'S REMEMBER THAT SHE COMES FROM THE FUTURE, SO IT WOULD MAKE SENSE THAT SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING SHE KNOWS WHAT COULD HAPPEN YES...? SHE LEFT AND TRAVELED TO THE PAST AND LEFT HER THERE NEAR THE TEMPLE, SURELY THE LOCATION WOULD HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY FELIX SO THAT SOMEHOW SHE WOULD FOLLOW THE SAME STEPS AS HIM AND HIS WIFE, NOW, THE REASONS FOR HER ABANDONMENT ARE UNKNOWN, IF YOU HAVE SOME THEORY HERE LEAVE IT TO ME I AM SURE THAT IN THE FUTURE THIS WILL COME TO LIGHT AND WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS BIOLOGICAL PARENTS.

Man, hearing about the season 1 days of miraculous makes remember when we first saw the leaks of the season and first the art for the pearls and stone, Alya with the fox (and how everyone called her Volpina), and Chloe with the bee. Man, those were days. I also remember how everyone was thinking Gabriel had the peacock and Emilie had the butterfly originally. I even remember when we first got that one image of Pixie Girl, and everyone thought she was a teenage Emilie with the butterfly miraculous that was going to appear in a flashback episode 😆. Ah, I miss those days.

Gosh so much is taking me back.

I remember expanded Square chaos. I remember there were theories of Ladybug and "Volpina"/Rena being rivals/antagonists to each other as a reversal of them being best friends + clearly Marinette wouldn't trust the new Fox (which I was never crazy about, especially as you typically didn't see that for Adrien and Nino, felt like turning girls against each other); and QB and LB were going be friendly. And there were speculated shenanigans for QB and RR, I think there was also a small rise of Chloya and the idea that maybe they'd have their own Square going.

Some I didn't see, like the theory that Pixie was teen Emilie, but I did see that she was planned for the NY Special, and there were the plans for the Shanghai Special.

I really did theorize that Marinette and Adrien were going to get their own exclusive Specials to be focused on, with Marinette in Shanghai and Adrien in NY and he for sure was going to work with Pixie.

Another theory I had was where Fu was going to become Marinette's mentor, Gabriel was going to be Adrien's, cause I did like the idea that he had the Peafowl, not Emilie. And I thought this concept art of Duusu was her being furious with Gabriel literally shutting her away.

And something was going to go down and this "Paon" was going to steal the Peafowl from Gabriel.

Or she already did and what Gabriel had was a fake.

And potentially that HM was who Gabriel and Emilie feared and that's why Adrien wasn't allowed out.

Those really were the days. The theories were so fun. And much of it I think was more interesting than what we got.

And it was a time of aus. I don't know how many aus are being done for ML these days, I think most are salt fics now, but that was the time to have fun, do different spins. Doing kwami swaps. Life swaps. Cowboy au.

You could get creative with akumas, like, I remember finding old fics that swapped Marientte with Bridgette and trapped her in a different reality/timeline, and I kinda wish the Paris Special did that. Off topic, but I feel the Paris Special should've gone full comedy and full reversal for characters. And that we actually got to see this different Paris.

Like, could you imagine Marinette and Emonette swapping places, either through akuma or Bunnyx, and Marinette's scrambling trying to figure out how to get back and how to keep going in this topsy turvy world where apparently Ladybug is a villain? "Hawk Moth" is a good guy? Wtf is Chat wearing? Wtf happened to Adrien.

And you got Emonette just needing shades cause this world is so bright and sunny and why do these people keep talking to her? Tf happened to Adrien, was he a poser this whole time? HM's a villain? But of course he's a bad villain just like he's a bad hero. And ooooh she's going to have so much fun with Chloe... and who tf is this Lila and what does she think she's doing picking a fight with Emonette. Oh, she's adding her to her list...

And you could add to it if kwamis were also kinda reversed.

Emonette stuck with canon Tikki trying to get her Marinette back, but also trying to rein in Emonette, try to be that voice of reason and her consciousness, and oh, she's dumping all of Chloe's things down the toilet... she's got her work cut out for her.

Meanwhile Special Tikki is more "pure luck" and is more chaotic and sporadic, she's not outright malicious, but she's just rolling with that neutralness of luck, it having good and bad and it comes down to karma and your own actions. She's just here to sit and watch the consequences play out. Emonette was kinda funny though she was predictable in her karma as her negative actions fed negative consequences. But man, this Marinette is freaking hilarious. Tikki is constantly eating popcorn, enjoying the show cause she never knows what she's going to get with this well meaning if all over the place Marinette.

The fact that Adrien and Félix are sentimonsters in my mind has helped me placing the Shanghai Special. I mean, I'm surely wrong, but I suspect that the Shanghai special is set right before the episode "Félix" in season 3.

Think about it.

Gabriel was wearing his wedding band. If the special had been set AFTER Félix, then when Gabriel disappeared with the ring, then ADRIEN, aka Chat Noir, would have vanished in thin air. But this doesn't happen, and you know why? Because his ring was safe at home on mama Agreste's finger. The one who died the second Papillon vanished in thin air was...poor unsuspecting Félix somewhere in London.

I can imagine the scene (and if some artist wants, hey can take the bunny and make a comic out of it!):

*Hawkmoth disappears*

*Somewhere in London, Amélie and Félix are having dinner.*

*Poor Amélie witnesses her beloved child being wrapped in a purple bubble and disappear in thin air.*

Amelie widens her eyes in shock. "That's it. What the f*ck has Gabriel done now? What happened to my son?"

*an hour later or so, Félix reappears in a storm of ladybugs.*

"That's it," says Amélie. "We're off to Paris next week. It's the anniversary of Emilie's disappearance so Gabriel can't complain that we go to visit. But this story must end. Evidently, Gabriel can't be trusted with something as precious as the ring that contains your amok.

*Félix is shocked beyond belief, not only for having just died and having been brought back to life, but also to find out in such a way that he's not even human*

Which leads to the situation in the Félix episode that we have seen. No wonder the poor kid was "behaving strangely"...

Omg Marinette was wearing her kwagatama in the Shanghai special. It could suggest that she wears it casually too!

It makes me wonder what is the kwatagama's purpose aside from being a symbol of friendship among Kwamis and humans. It probabaly made an appearance in the special for a reason. Could it be that it'll play a role in a future episode?

Like why 15 years?

I´m just gonna think that Gabriel and Emilie just went into that trip, find the miraculous that Fu lost and when they used, Emilie got sick and Gabriel spend the next 15 years searching a cure for his wife and when she kind of "die" or whatever, he just take hard measures and look for the miraculous of Ladybug and Chat Noir  to just bring her back. And of course, Nathalie know all about this and put her life in danger for love!? wtf people?

Just a Theory

So what if, in both specials it is revealed that both New York & Shanghai has a miraculous box of their own.

With that said, later on we could see these characters again/all together if some world crisis were to happen or if Paris just needs help; they’d team up.

I just think it’d be a cool idea and a chance to see the new characters that we’ve easily come to love.

If this theory proves true then most likely we wouldn’t see them until another special or maybe even until the very end in the final battle against Hawkmoth but it’d still be great :3

So what is Gabriel's true goal?

So when I (and like 99% of people probably) found out that Hawky and The Bestest Father of the show are the same person, it seemed clear that his goal was to bring his wife back. The coffin-like thingy was a proof of that intention.

But...

15 years?! What?

So there were some hints that the Agrestes had some something on their mind after having acquired the miraculous and the book, because Emily got sick BECAUSE of using the Peacock miraculous. And we have no idea what she was using it for (although the sentimonster Adrien theory is heartbreakingly appealing to me).

So it means they had some goal before Adrien even, and it's something Gabriel's ready to kill for. I think it's the first time in the show he directly had someone killed. Because the akuma damage is reversible, what he did to Fei's adoptive father isn't.

So what is he trying to achieve?

What's his ultimate goal?

Definitely not to bring back his wife, who apparently is in comma because of that goal.

What is he aiming at????

I'd love to hear your ideas!

Shanghai theories and analysis

First, some info about Mandarin and Chinese languages. The letters/ideogrammes are the same across the whole country but are pronounced differently according to the language (Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.) so all of the Chinese languages can communicate through writing. Then even if the letters are the same in latin alphabet (the one used in a lot of European languages - English, French, Spanish, German, etc.), the meaning could be different with the four intonations in Mandarin (è é ē ě). For example ma could mean house, mummy or horse depending of the intonation used. That could explain why Marinette say something “weird” at the end: she didn’t use the right intonation for the word sister, jiějiě which looks/sounds thank you, xièxiè. By the way, I think the name of the Renlings are the animal’s name in Chinese.

It happens after the NY special since we saw a figurine of Jess transformed. So the time line is S3 > NY special > Shanghai special > S4 it seems. Edit: Thomas Astruc said it was an animation mistake and the figurine should have been Sparrow, not Eagle. Anyway it’s still weird: Marinette acts like pre S3 finale toward Adrien and Ladybug post S3 finale toward Chat noir. And in the Intro, the Miracle Box has the Ladybug shape like at the end of S3. And since Cash finishes in jail at the end of the special and he was in the NY one.

I hope he stays in jail because he knows who is Marinette’s uncle and where he lives so I hope he won’t use this information against her in the future...

Since Cash was in both specials, he might be there to steal the American miracle box just like he stole Fei’s bracelet. 

So after the almost nuclear war in the NY special, we know now that Gabriel pays Cash to harass a man and might also have pay for a murder disguised in a fire accident... (except if his death was an accident during a criminal fire). But what was his plan 15 years ago (before/around Adrien’s birth)? We know he wanted the prodigious now to have more power to defeat Ladybug and Chat noir, but why 15 years ago? And how did he learn the existence of the holy grotto anyway? Could Audrey Bourgeois or Tomoe Tsurugi have told him? Did he force Nooroo to explain him? Is it the reason he wants Adrien to learn Mandarin? Because of this place and what happened in Tibet?

I just hope Gabriel has nothing to do with Fei being orphan and/or be presented to a poor and struggling school because she is also 15 years old, the time where he starts getting interested by that school. I made a joke theory about Fei having a red lock just like Nathalie but now what if? I know Nathalie seems more Caucasian but Fei could be biracial with more Asian features. 

Cash is also the only person outside of Nathalie (and Leeri) to know Gabriel Agreste is Hawkmoth. But I doubt Gabriel bought the bracelet in person. But he sent Nathalie there so maybe he can make the connection.

I found Bastille (the parrot) really special. He’s pretty old for a grey parrot and he was pretty interested in Jess figurine who is a Miraculous holder. Is he something close to Meishi, the guardian of the prodigious? And why does he, a Chinese parrot, have a French name*? Plus the Cheng family has their own songs. So maybe they’re a big family, a clan or something...

*Bastille is a name known during the French revolution to be a jail where the nobles locked away the revolutionaries. The storm of the Bastille or Bastille day is often mistaken for the choice of the French National day but the real one was a year after, the Federation day, when the French people was united.

About Sabine’s backstory, it sadly something common for Asian people who immigrate in Europe, or at least in France from what I know. For example, during my studies we have one year two Tawaian exchanged students and they have to choose a French name... It really surprised me at the time and I didn’t understand since they were ready to learn a whole different language and we couldn’t make the effort to learn two names... I think it’s racist to expect more effort from people of color than white ones... This part was sadly realistic and can happen to Asian people.

So Sabine (Xia Ping) might have face racism when she comes to France and we don’t know why yet (maybe it was for Tom or she met him after). We already know it with her father-in-law and people ignorant of Chinese culture (like calling her Mme (madame) Dupain-Cheng instead of Mme Cheng). She must be a really strong mind to stay this nice and kind with all that! She’s one of the best mom in the series! (with Max’s mom in my opinion). 

Since Adrien is now Marinette’s Chinese professor, I hope we will see a scene of it in S4 but I know I can dream.

I have the headcanon Wang Cheng will take care of Fei now :) Since she was the magical ingredient and she will teach the accordion to Wang!

and many people have seen saying that they're new Kwamis, but they look significantly different, yet also similar to Kwamis. There are also already Dragon, Tiger, Snake and Horse Kwamis and we all know they do not look like that.

My guess is they're the Kwamis' "cousins" - Renlings (dunno how to spell it, it could be wrong) that will appear in the Shanghai episode. From the image, we can see that the known Renlings are Dragon, Eagle/Hawk, Snake/Cobra, Tiger, Bear, Mantis, Horse and Lion.

They also resembles animals, like Kwamis do, and I've also done some research on Kung-Fu animal styles from wikipedia and found some interesting results

The synopsis for the Shanghai episode, translated by Miraculous INTL:

...The two girls will ally and discover the existence of a new magical jewel, the Prodigious, who Papillon, also in Shanghai, has wished to possess for a long time..."

My guess is that the Prodigious are the counterparts of the Miraculouses, just as Renlings are to Kwamis. Kwamis represent abstract ideas while Renlings are animals martial arts styles.

Not to mention Renlings also have attack/dynamic poses and expressions compared to Kwamis, which supports the idea.

Hawk Moth wanting to find them must be because they're similar to Miraculouses that could also grant wishes or help him bring Emilie back-- the same way that Miraculouses do.

Jeremy also tagged the post with #LadyDragon, and since the leaked design of Lady Dragon looks completely different to Dragon Miraculous holders, I'm convinced that she is the Dragon Prodigious holder. And there could be alot more Renlings out there.

I’ve got a bit pieced together from the spoilers and some of this’ll draw from stuff other people said and a little I thought of on my own but I’m gonna try to cover a few things all at once. SPOILERS BTW(gonna tag it anyways but just in case)

This is gonna take a little while but I think the place to start would be with what the descriptions of these two specials can already tell us

Right off the bat I’m not the best at translating French but before I go ahead with butchering that translation let’s unpack what the visuals show us. 

For starters there’s several new Akumas and heroes and right off the bat we can recognize all the heroes and a few akuma but it also stands out that Queen Wasp is Queen B and “Malediktor” looks like her dad. So since it looks so similar to her suit as Queen B it seems reasonable to assume that the events of “Le Combat des Reines” take place after “Le Tour des Heros”. 

As for the new akumas, previews have confirmed who The Collector and Troublemaker will be and a few others seem obvious given character designs but a few will obviously be new characters and on the whole would be best explored on their own like how the snowmanlooking one may be why we saw the ice-skating preview; but it also stands out specifically that there are so many Akumas simultaneously thus necessitating the introduction of three new heroes who we know to have each been akumatized before so that alone will either mean that they’re gonna have to be deakumatized before they become heroes or their Miraculouses will protect them.

And that seems like best way to lead up to talking about how several sources who translated the commentaries from the video we got these images from all agree that it was said that Marinette will be the one handing out the new Miraculouses so Alya becoming Rena Rouge is an obvious choice seeing as she already tried to make her Ladybug in the origin episodes and by extension it makes sense for her to give one to Nino as Carapace ore “Shell” as some people have been translating it, but it gives cause for us to wonder why she’d ever trust Chloe to become a superhero. There’s some simple explanations right off the bat like about how it happens during an emergency and she was low on options or it happens after Chloe had already started showing progress towards becoming a better person, but one theory I saw that stood out was that Marinette would’ve originally tried to give it to Adrien but as we all know Adrien already has one so he gives it to one of his oldest friends and I sorta like this not only because it’d show Marinette trusting Adrien with a responsibility she doesn’t know he already has but from her perspective it could look like he gave it up like she almost did. And to further support this, Ladybug would probably b confused if the person showing up with the bee miraculous is obviously not the person she gave it to so I’m gonna bring up a spoiler we got tweeted to us a couple of months ago a short piece of their script:

Here we have Chloe just straight up telling whomever she’stalking to who she is which in the context of Ladybug being confused about why she’s obviously not Adrien makes some sense. Next things I’m gonna address will have to do with translations from what we see so bare with me and if I’m very wrong please let me know so I can correct myself. 

For starters I can at least read that “Les Tour des Heros” is a 2 part special but the best I could translate the title to was “The Hero’s Turn” which isn’t very helpful. As for the rest of it the picture tells the story about as well as I can try to translate it; there are new heroes and many villains.

‘Les Combat des Reines” translates to “The Combat of Queens” and is described as a trilogy so that paired with the previously statement that the Bourgeois family is being controlled by Style Queen leads me to a few conclusions.

First the plurality of combat of queens make me suspect that the big fight this will ultimately be about will pit Queen B against Style queen with her family at stake.

Next, I already mentioned that this seems like it takes place after the other one so gonna guess that paired with my theory from before that Chloe tells the rest of the team who she is this could lead to some mistrust as most of the rest of the team recognize her as a bully so I think that may be the beginnings of a team divide that ultimately lead here, making it necessary for Chloe to show and prove that as Queen B she can be a hero for reasons that aren’t just because she idolizes Ladybug so much. And beyond that some level of distrust withing the team as a whole is sort of expected because Thomas Astruc was asked to share a spoiler so he tweeted a poster of Captain America: Civil War prompting a panic that the heroes would fight each other about something.

All that aside there’s one final set of theories I thought I’d at least attempt to cover while I’m at this and that is to do with all the Chinese Zodiac Kwamis we saw 

And there’s not really that much concrete information to go off of here but it is known that there’s a planned episode with Ladybug in Shanghai.

Which again doesn’t tell us much, they’re both basically just concept images.

There is however a secondary theory that seemed to spring up out of a bunch of people separately comparing Kwamis they liked to the main cast and what this one boils down to is that the rest of their class somehow ends up with these Zodiac Kwamis; popular theories being that Kim gets the dragon or that Alix gets the snake both based in part on their personalities and the aesthetic of their character designs. For me this idea came to mind when the mouse and/or rat Kwami reminded me of rose because they were both small but someone pointed out that the listed Kwamis leaves out the Rabbit and/or Hare and that they thought she’d be more fitting of that based on how she acts.  There’s a lot here and I know there’s probably more to share so feel free to add in the comments (assuming I post this correctly). Also if I’ve made any major mistakes then please let me know about that.

High-key excited that there is ACTUALLY a lunar eclipse in the Shanghai special!

I keep on re-working the theory topics I talked about in my last Shanghai post and several more I didn't include there and I'm THRILLED because the lunar eclipse the 5 moons showcase in the middle of the Kwami spirit circle from “Sandboy” was something I didn't dare to hope for already, but oh my God! We will actually get some informations on that! Finally!

I wonder how it come into play with the events that open the oppoinity to get the Prodigious (official name for the Renlings “Miraculous”) and if it maybe has something to do with the peacock miraculous as I suspect. Because Duusu is not only the only Kwami of the upper Miracle Box layer that is connected to moons, she is also the one at the "peak" of them.

Before I new of the lunar ecplise I suspected that the event that opens the underground place could have been a special day in the 60 year-cycle of the zodiac calender. But now things are narrowing down even further and I’m so interested in finding out what circumstances its gonna be in the special!

Gabriel is a sentimonster

Okay, you’ve heard of Sentimonster!Adrien now get ready for the new (crack?) theory I thought of, with some help from the ML Writer Guild: Gabriel is a sentimonster.

He has an episode coming up dedicated to him, which is typical of a sentimonster/akuma (yes, yes, I know, ‘felix’, but shhh).

In the Shanghai special, he’s “waited 15 years for this” I.E how long he’s been alive.

His amok could be in Emilie’s ring, which is why he didn’t want to give them back.

He’s so desperate to get Emilie back because that was her dying wish.

It doesn’t make much sense but it connects some dots so well! This SO isn’t canon though.

My last take on the sentimonster Theory

So this post will be my last, for the time being, on senti adrien. Until now we can't say if he is one or not, on the simple fact that we don't know when gabe and emilie got the peacock. In the Shanghai special gabriel only mentioned a quest they started 14 years ago. Yes adrien is 14 at that point, but we can't say if the quest started with the peacock or the book. It is possible that they found the book and were so facinated with it, that they searched for the miraculouses. If there quest Was to have a son, gabe could easily just use the bunny to go back in time to fix the peacock back then. Problem would be solved, but his quest is not as clear. His main goal for now is the wish, for what exactly we can't say, only that he wants to save emelies life. But is the wish the only way to save her? We don't know that yet. He could as easily, when he found out that there was a guardian in Paris, try to find him and ask him. If there would be non other way, then his quest for the ladybug and the Black cat continues. Also why would he give away the miraculous, which can end his son life in a snap? Even as a douchbag as he is, we can't denie that he cares for adrien. The gamble is to high even for him. Futhermore we can't Tell the effect of a broken miraculous. We only know(thanks to the ladybug episode) that using a broken miraculous(key Word using not wearing) forces its wounds to become its Users. If emelie used it to creat adrien, she would only need to use it once. So if one time is enoght, it's effect would have to take years to get her into a coma. In the Show we never learned how sick emilie was, when it began and how long it took. Nathalie for example used it on more then one occasion and was bed riden in a couple of month or weeks( ml timeline if there would be one, now would be a good time for it 😅). So assuming it would take over 12 to 13 years is not wrong, but still not canon. Even the multiplical use would make no sense. Beside enchanted physical powers, there is nothing to gain from it. She can't creat another senti, until the last is destroyed. Also breaking the Limit isn't an option for two reasons :

First even if gabriel break his with his mega akuma, it still renders him to one butterfly he can only creat more with catalyst as his akuma

I just want some post reveal Miracuclass shenanigans/ fluff. Like after an nighttime akuma attack, Marinette is so dead and they all have pillows and a blanket in the cupboards and she sleeps in class while Adrien acts like a lovesick fool (this is post -reveal pre- relationship). Or like Marc and Nathaniel asking Marinette and Adrien about every akuma and their experience. Or Alix and Kim exercising with them because they can. Nino playing an entire playlist dedicated to them on their partenership anniversary. Max and Markov asking Marinette about her Lucky Charms.Them covering for Marinette and Adrien during akuma attacks. I just tink it will be a nice fic.

You know, everyone is talking about how Adrien will get akumatized because of LadyNoir conflict. But no one is talking about how MARINETTE will get akumatized because of it. In Optigami, Marinette told Alya, " I need an ally who replaces me if something happens to me one day". Is it foreshadowing Marinette getting akumatized? Is it foreshadowing Alya using the Ladybug Miraculous during that time? Now I heard about the 100th episode of Miraculous (episode 22 of S4). And I have theory about it which may not make any sense but hear me out.

What if we finally get our Princess Justice content?

Suppose Chat and Ladybug have a fight on the point of secret identities (because of what Rocketear showed us) and Chat out of anger just says something he didn't mean or something. Ladybug is hurt and just leaves. She detransforms and is about to call Alya when she remembers that she has a date with Nino. She just cries and cries. She doesn't sees the akuma. But Tikki does. Tikki takes the earings and flys to Alya. Marinette is akumatized. Chat figures out her identity. Some more angst. The truth about coming out. And BOOM! Ladybug! Alya comes and saves the day. Some fluff and done!!

I know it makes literally no sense but atleast it's a good fanfic promt

Headcannon: The Cheng family is super rich and have their fingers in all the industries. Marinette is also the heiress to the house of Cheng. Yan and Mei were the previous Ladybug and Cat Noir. And the entire Cheng family knows that Marinette is Ladybug and the Guardian of the Miraculous. Fei and Marinette are tsundere sisters and love to tease and annoy eachother. Gabriel being the amazing parent he is (note the sarcasm) tries to set Adrien up with Marinette because the heir to the Agreste household dating the heiress to the house of Cheng will be good for his brand. Marinette refuses because she wants Adrien to date her because he likes her, not because of his father. Lila is exposed when Miss Bustier announces that they are going to Shanghai. Fei is also Shu Yin's biological daughter. There is also an evil Cheng family member who joins forces with Shadowmoth.

Is it okay to make Marinette(and her mom) darker when creating fan art? when I say that I mean like an actually dark East Asian. There’s nothing wrong with white passing people of colour it’s just I would like to make her darker purely because I like the character and I want more representation than the show provides. Is it insensitive?

as far as i’m aware anon, it’s okay to do.

now, just for reference, i’m not asian or east asian at all so i’m not the final authority on this and i would suggest referring to @writingwithcolor or another, similar source (i tried to google some resources for you to look at anon but they weren’t quite what you needed).

okay, so, from my understanding anon when white people depict east asian characters (in this case specifically two chinese women) they usually tend to go the fetish or borderline fetish route and depict chinese women as delicate, pale (or porcelain skinned as many people will say which i think writingwithcolor also made a post on seriously their blog is great) and usually this doesn’t have great results.

like marinette and her mum are both very, incredibly pale and as far as i can tell pale skin, while not rare, isn’t exactly the default for working class chinese women. (which is what i’m guessing sabine is.)

from my research darker skin tones tend to be more common the further south in china you go so like, i think it’s canon or something that marinette’s mum is from shanghai but it’d be pretty easy to just say she was from a southern province considering like. i think sabine has gotten like 4 lines and marinette has never actually acknowledged she’s chinese at all so like. go crazy in that department.

anyway. uh. as far as i can tell anon it’s not insensitive or offensive to give an east asian character darker skin, as long as that skin tone is east asian. like, taking marinette and sabine and making them say, black like max, whilst saying they were still 100% chinese or white-chinese that would be a dodgy move but i think you’ve probably already garnered that anon.

basically anon i’d say the fact you’re reaching out to try and bring representation to the ml fandom is a good sign and also there are lots and lots and lots of skin tone palettes available for reference so don’t be afraid to use them! :)

one thing i’d definitely be careful of anon though, is going too far the wrong way and making marinette and sabine very yellow as that’s leaning into racial caricature territory (kinda like depicting indigenous americans with red skin or black people with the sausage lip look). i’d definitely compile a few reference pictures of dark-skinned east asians in various lights and if they’re digital you can probably pixelate the images and colour pick straight from the pictures. (fashion photos will probably have some really interesting lighting and colour combinations you can use too!)

doing the above will also help you avoid making the ‘colour theory’ mistake i’ve seen a number of people defend their racist art with. (like this one artist in another fandom who’s perfectly capable of colouring light-skinned asian characters but in the same lighting will uh depict indigenous american characters as purple, grey, blue and with blonde or red hair which i’m sure you can guess, anon, is a Bad Move.)

anyway, i think as long as you do your research anon and use references you should be fine :) but if anyone who’s east asian disagrees feel free to say so
