The Regent Theater is hosting the LA premiere of The Man from Mo'Wax, a documentary on the creator of the Mo' Wax record label James Lavelle. Lavelle famously formed Unkle with DJ Shadow, which had the very popular collaborative album Psyence Fiction. James Lavelle will also be playing a DJ set, ticketed separately, for the event.

UNKLE was Jame Lavelle's musical project founded in 1992 in conjunction with his legendary British record label Mo' Wax. While the label was only active for about a decade it left a lasting impact on British music especially Hip Hop, Trip Hop, and turntablism. While the the label was still active it collaborated with and helped bring graffiti artist Futura 2000 to prominence. Futura alongside Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack, collaborations with Nigo of Bape,Mark Gonzales,Mike Mills and Money Mark under the creative direction of Ben Drury helped grow the reputation of the label as being at the forefront of alternative hip hop culture in the UK. A massive part of this because of the hype of Lavelle's UNKLE whose debut full length album in 1998 Psyence Fiction was widely anticipated and hyped by music journalists, as it was viewed as a follow up the 1996's Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow, who had since joined Lavelle as a full time member of UNKLE. While the album was ultimately released to mixed reviews(Pitchfork gave it a 9.8/10 while Robert Christgau gave it a one-star honourable mention). it has gone on to be retroactively appreciated as a cult classic. Part of the promotion surrounding the album was the music video seen in this post by British directing team Shynola. It mixes various mediums although mostly sticks to animation and can be seen as a distilled pull of Mo'Wax's visual output up until that point. It has characters designed by Futura 2000 featured prominently throughout the video alongside heavily edited live footage of a model in what appears to very various BAPE camo jackets(Mo' Wax had previously released a double album complication in 1997 including a side compiled by BAPE founder Nigo). Another notable aspect of the video is a section seen around the 2 minute mark that features an animated sequence of the UNKLE wordmark reminiscent of The Designer's Republic mixed with Wildstyle graffiti. A twitter thread by artist ANTIREAL from 2020 points out a contemporary analog of this visual style in his own work and his primary influence DMAS3.

Потом сошлись на термине "трип-хоп", который прилип намертво. Люк Вайберт (он же Wagon Christ, Plug, Kerrier District) уверяет, что в 1991 году написал на своей демо-кассете два слова "trip hop" и в виду при этом ничего не имел. Кассета попала на лондонский лейбл Mo'Wax, и близкие к нему журналисты подцепили термин. Люк вовсе не настаивает на своем приоритете, наоборот, очень стесняется, что дал жизнь этому монстру. Под трип-хопом имеется в виду неспешный гипнотический грув в сочетании с депрессивным рэпом полузадушенным голосом и неуверенным девичьим пением. Как и в случае с джанглом, секрет успеха состоял в синтезе брейкбита с бас-партией, позаимствованной из даб-регги. Классики жанра - Massive Attack, Portishead, Трики. Все они, как и Люк Вайберт, разумеется, всегда отрицали, что имеют отношение к выдуманному журналистами трип-хопу. This is the DJ Shadow remix that led to him being signed by Mo'Wax, which then resulted in him having the freedom and support to create his ground-breaking debut, Endtroducing.

James Lavelle said, "I was DJing in New York and LA and would go around US record companies picking up unreleased vinyl hip-hop promos. Doin’ Damage in My Native Language, by African Zimbabwe hip-hop act Zimbabwe Legit, wasn’t very good. But on the B-side there was this new mix by this DJ I hadn’t heard of before – DJ Shadow – called Shadow’s Legitimate Mix, full of scratching and samples. It was beautiful and unusual, even though it had little to do with the original, and I started playing it in my DJ sets. I got a friend from Tommy Boy Records to introduce me to Shadow. We spoke for hours on the phone about British hip-hop and the NME. I was 19 and had grown up in Oxford; he was 21 and had grown up in Davis, California. We both felt like we’d come from suburbia, outside the main cities. I said: “Would you be interested in making a record for Mo’Wax, my label? Don’t worry about choruses and verses, just push your sound further into that world.”"
