Okay, as someone who's only interaction with Gundam has been SD world and Great Battle, is there a good point to start with the "main" series? (Is there even a main series?)
Yes there is a main series… multiple technically.
The main core series is the “Universal Century” stuff, and here’s the chronological order for that (but legit you can KINDA start anywhere):
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Movie Trilogy
Advent Of The Red Comet
The 08th MS Team
MS IGLOO
0080: War In The Pocket
Thunderbolt
0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Mobile Suit Gundam Twilight Axis
Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative
Gundam Hathaway
Mobile Suit Gundam: F91
Victory Gundam
Then there’s “Mars Century”:
Gundam Wing
Operation Meteor
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
Cosmic Era:
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER
Anno Domini:
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie -A wakening of the Trailblazer
And Advanced Generation:
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Memory of Eden
All of these are more “main series”, and are put into chronological order under their banner names.
For funsies, here’s the release order of the more “mainline” style titles… and also G Gundam because I love it.
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979 – 1980)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985 – 1986)
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986 – 1987)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (1988)
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (1991)
Victory Gundam (1993)
Mobile Suit V Gundam (1993 – 1994)
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994 – 1995)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995 – 1996)
After War Gundam X (1996)
Turn A Gundam (1999)
Gundam SEED (2002 – 2003)
Gundam SEED Destiny (2004 – 2005)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007 – 2009)
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (2010)
Gundam Reconguista in G (2014 – 2015)
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (2015 – 2018)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015 – 2017)
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (2015 – 2017)
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (2022 – Ongoing)
Annnnnd the SD Gundam series:
Mobile Suit SD Gundam
Mobile Suit SD Gundam Mk II
Mobile Suit SD Gundam Mk III
Mobile Suit SD Gundam Mk IV
Mobile Suit SD Gundam Mk V
Superior Defender Gundam Force
Annnnnnd the Build series:
Gundam Build Fighters
Gundam Build Fighters Try
Gundam Build Divers
Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE
That should get you started! :D

Come to think of it, how many Gundam shows *do* climax with a battle to defeat a World Ending Doohickey (WED)?
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, series) - Yes.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985, series) - Sort of. Mostly a battle to control a WED.
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986, series) - No. Glemy does try to chuck a big rock at his problems though.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (1988, movie) - Yes, as Char follows Glemy’s example (mistakes were made).
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989, miniseries) - No.
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (1991, movie) - No;  I don’t think the Rafflesia counts and the stakes are more one-on-one.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991, miniseries) - Yes; a rare WED vs WED situation with a very poor outcome.
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (1993, series) - Yes.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994, series) - Yes - VIA THE POWER OF LOVE.
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (1995, series) - Yes, as Zechs also tries to chuck a(n artificial) rock at his problems, then has regrets.
After War Gundam X (1996, series) - Yes, kinda? It would be unfair to say the Satellite Cannon isn’t a WED, but nobody actually goes into that final fight aiming to destroy it, that’s mostly just a lucky consequence.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (1996, miniseries) - Yes, but only on technicalities. It doesn’t actually end with one and the Apsaras III isn’t really in the WED weight-class. Narratively, however, the plot does climax with our heroes blowing up a terrifying weapon.
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (1998, miniseries/movie) - Doesn’t climax on one, though a WED is definitely involved. Thematically, no.
Turn A Gundam (1999, series) - Yes.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002, series) - Yes.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, series) - Yes, again, with knobs on.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER (2006, miniseries) - No.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007, series) - Technically no, though it’s not like Ribbons could be trusted with that thing.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie - A Wakening of the Trailblazer- (2010, movie) - Yes, with ‘doohickey’ in this case meaning ‘out of context alien swarm from Jupiter’.
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (2010, miniseries) - More ‘defending against a WED’ than defeating it, since actually taking it out is off the table.
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (2011, series) - Oddly enough, no. The WED of the week proves to be self-destructive and everyone pitches in to dismantle it.
Gundam Reconguista in G (2014, series) - No. Reconguista is blessedly WED-free.
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (2015, miniseries) - No.
Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS (2016, series) - No.
Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (2018, movie) - Yes, remarkably. At least one gets the impression Turn A’s Moonlight Butterfly was supposed to do that.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway (2021, movie) - No.
Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury (2022, series) - It would appear so, yes. World-transforming, at any rate.
So, discounting a few bits and pieces I decided were too short to count, of the 27 pieces of media listed above, that’s 12 solid ‘yes’s, 11 solid ‘no’s, 2 qualified ‘yes's, and 2 slightly more complex situations (numbers subject to change if G-Witch swerves wildly at the last minute).
That’s honestly a more even balance than I expected. I have no real conclusion to draw here beyond ‘this is definitely a thing that generally does happen in anime, yes’. But I was curious about how it broke down. Seems there’s a trend towards the miniseries generally avoiding WEDs and the main series embracing them far more often as an endgame-climax, which does make sense. Oddly the movies are a more even mix, which I find vaguely interesting.

I gotta say, while I am, I suppose, looking forward to Gundam SEED Freedom, after having thought about it for a little bit I am curious as to where they’re gonna go with this.
So, we know ZAFT’s probably gonna be the main villain again, since they’re what’s shown in the trailers (and honestly if it gets us a new HG Ginn I’m not gonna complain too much).
Anyway, putting that aside, we do know that Kira, Athrun (because of course) and Shinn (we see a clip of the Destiny in the trailer) are gonna be in the new movie. We also can guess that Kira’s gonna have a shiny new mobile suit/upgrade to the Freedom, since he’s got a new Helmet, and presumably a new cockpit, AND they specifically didn’t show us any shots of a mobile suit barring the Ginns or old footage, implying that it’s a whole new machine.
This is interesting, because I’m really, really curious about what it might be. Perhaps some sort of Perfect Strike Freedom? Or Amazing Strike Freedom? Or perhaps it’ll take influence from the Stargazer and be star themed? Like some sort of Freedom Galaxy Cosmos?
Honestly though, I imagine it’ll stick fairly close to the Freedom and Strike Freedom (I’m imagining a strike freedom covered in Witch From Mercury-style drone weapons in addition to the funnels), but I am distinctly curious how they’ll model it. Bandai’s been really pushing the Seed revives since they made them, like the Impulse and Strike Freedom get used for parts a lot, so I’m wondering if it’s going to be an entirely new mold, or if they’re just gonna make a few new runners for the Strike Freedom.
I am probably going to be interested in Athrun’s new suit though, since I do very much like the Infinite Justice.

Now that I have finished MS Gundam Seed/Stargazer/Destiny (I've decided to put a pin in tackling MS Seed/Destiny Special Edition for the time being) I've started tackling MS Gundam 00 and something I find interesting is just like in G-witch Gundam mobile suits are a relatively new thing and I can't help but wonder how common of a theme is that in the MS franchise as a whole?
Oh yeah, Gundams being some brand new, super revolutionary weapon is a VERY common trope across the franchise. It really all goes back to the og series with Amuro's RX-78 'Gundam' which was specifically built as this brand-new type of mobile suit with cutting edge technology meant to help the Federation turn the tide of the war. And many Gundam shows since have followed this mold.
Though that's not to say EVERY Gundam show follows this trend. G-Gundam and Gundam X are two of the more notable exceptions. With the former, the 'Gundam Fight' that the show is based around has been going on for several decades already. And the latter show is set in a post-apocalypse where there are quite a few old Gundams from the last war floating around.

i don't think i can finish Gundam SEED: Destiny
i just kind of hate all the new characters that are introduced. plus i didn't even care all that much for SEED till the last third of the show. even then it wasn't that great.
the best thing about SEED was the ova Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer

I felt like writing something short today, so let’s talk about the New Gundam Seed Freedom trailer (it was either this or a quick review of SD Gundam CROSS RAYS).
I think I’m gonna genuinely struggle to take this movie seriously.
Now I’ve already done a few posts about my feelings on the Cosmic Era (and I’ll probably do more at some point), but in brief; I like both SEED and SEED Destiny. I like Destiny more because it feels like they had more freedom (ugh) with what they wanted to do, as opposed to vaguely retelling the original series, but I think SEED’s a bit more coherent.
(Stargazer’s a decent little yarn about Phantom pain pilots, I’d say it’s almost the cosmic era in miniature)
And I know it’s because it’s a scene taken out of context from the trailer, but-
Lacus: It’s my wish as well
Kira: UWA!?
Lacus: to fight alongside you
Kira: UK-GHA?!
He can emote, ladies and gentlemen!
Speaking of emoting, maybe it’s just that I haven’t seen Cucuruz Doan’s Island, but everyone seems to be really pushing that facial animation in this. Like, in another scene, Lacus turns around, looks faintly disgusted, then moves right along to joy. And I misread Shinn’s expression something like twice when rewatching the trailer (is it horny rage, or is it anguish?). It was odd.
Though I will say the new music (op? Inset song?) sounds really good, though I find the Cosmic Era’s always had good music.
Even though we have another moment of unintentional parody, where the music lulls and Kira says dramatically “I can’t see an end to this war, all I can do is……” (soundtrack) FREEDOM. And my mind immediately went to “metal gear protagonist”.
Admittedly while I don’t think I’ll be able to take it seriously, I do think it’ll be fun to talk about. But all the same, I was feeling oddly cynical. Not really sure why.
Tumblr media
Unrelatedly, there was another announcement today, Mobile Suit Gundam Silver Phantom. A, uh, virtual reality narrative interactive experience as one news site has dubbed it. Gonna be honest, I feel the the top comment on the YouTube video sums up my thoughts “I was hype until the meta quest appeared”. Anyway, we know basically nothing about it, so I’m going to indulge in some baseless speculation for the moment. Presumably it’s a spin-off, I don’t think they’d make a whole new AU just for this. So then as a guess I’d say it’s likely either a Universal Century sidestory or SEED (since we got Gundam Seed Eclipse a little while back). But I did see one interesting theory while browsing earlier:
Tumblr media
It could be this “Silver Phantom”. Unlikely, I think, but a neat theory.
