Hi, if the asks for AEIWAM are still open, can you share some more regarding the 12th division transitioning to taking over R&D, thanks to Urahara? Did the other divisions take it well, were there fights over boundaries/responsibilities/secrets? Individual divisions holding onto research directly relating to their remits? And how did Mayuri taking over from Urahara impact relations with other divisions?

Urahara proposing a dedicated research and development branch was not a particularly unexpected move, and a wildly applauded one.

His predecessor, now-Royal-Guard Hikifune, had done extensive research and development on her own when she developed both the modern Gikon and the Mod Souls like Kon. The 4th was massively overworked but still doing their own medical research. The Kido corps had been doing their own R&D writ: spells for ages. The 7th division had been tracking death and soul statistics like where souls reincarnated in the Rukongai and who went to hell and why for centuries. "Science" is a very strong word for what the 11th was doing re: destruction, but by golly they were doing a lot of it.

So Urahara's idea to develop a cross-division group dedicated to connecting existing research and developing new lines of inquiry from there was an extremely logical step and one pretty much everyone regarded as a good move.

Everyone, except Aizen.

See, Aizen had been doing his own little experiments with creating and perfecting the Hogyoku and those experiments involved a shitload of murder and other crimes, not to mention the whole treason thing, and Aizen was worried that if Kisuke managed to say, actually collate and look over the Rukongai crime stats Aizen had been hiding or read up on the Kido corps work, he might be JUST smart enough to figure out what Aizen was up to.

So Aizen made sure that when they got caught, that the experiments he'd been running would look like Kisuke's work :)

I think Aizen also had a significant hand in making sure it was the literal clown Mayuri who got the job after Urahara fled. There were definitely better candidates to become the Gotei-13's quartermain, but I think Aizen either discouraged them, or figured out how to make Mayuri look way more sane than he actually was to the other captains when the vote came.

Mayuri was a disaster for R&D. Not only were his scientific methods dubious at best, none one the other divisions trusted him with their work, and all of them became a lot more secretive and paranoid.

The 4th resumed it's own medical research, which was slow because of all the other work the 4th needed to do as well. The 7th kept its statistics under lock and key lest Mayuri get funny ideas about killing people to measure things faster. This new cloaked way of doing business allowed Mayuri to engage in horrors that actively got in the way of progress. Like recruiting the top 10% of the academy's graduating class for his division and then using them as guinea pigs and/or explosives.

In AEIWAM, not all hope was lost.

Before he was a shinigami, Kaname Tousen was a Librarian.

It was all he ever really wanted to be- when he came to the seireitei it was entirely to investigate his sister's death. He had no intention of enrolling in the academy, or pursuing rank.

Aizen has a way of derailing people's lives.

By force, when necessary.

By pounding 44 magical nails into Tousen's spine and carving command kanji into his shoulders and inflicting a vile curse on him to force Kaname into being his co-conspirator, his own personal R&D, and his entertaining puppet, if necessary.

Well,

Maybe Aizen is having a little bit more fun than strictly "necessary".

Aizen might have cursed Tousen into silence and obedience, but he can't stop Tousen from keeping his own records. Meticulous notes about every excursion he is made to take, every crime he is forced to commit, every horrific act Tousen does through tears- everything is recorded, documented, and safely stored in triplicate in several locations and formats.

In fact, Aizen comes to rely on those records- Aizen is very good at Lying and Kido and Hubris but that is the extent of his intellectual prowess. He relies on Gin to keep track of what everyone else is doing, and on Tousen to do all the scheduling, lab work, provisions and actually keeping the aarancar in line.

And Kaname takes advantage to press the curse whenever he can- he was close, he was so. Fucking. Close! To getting the whole scheme exposed during Turn Back The Pendulum.

He tried. He tried and tried to say it when Yamamoto interrogated him, to confess his sins and bring Gin and Aizen down with him, to make himself understood.

-Who did this? Who killed captain Hirako?

-I know them! I know, but I can not say!

It's all Kaname can manage before the curse retaliates, and almost strangles him to death to keep his silence, invisible to Yamamoto because of Aizen's illusions.

...after the nature of the curse is revealed, Yamamoto listens to the recording of that interrogation and weeps. The captains are the closest thing he has to children. Yamamoto hears this man who is almost his son, screaming, begging him to understand -

Not "I don't know"

Not "I will not say"

"I know, but I can not say."

So Kaname bides his time, keeps his records and tries to distract himself form his situation by drawing what conclusions he can.

After the Winter War, there is some debate as to what's going to happen to R&D.

Mayuri is in a jar, battling for control of his body.

Nemu refuses to admit he's out of action. Akon refuses to be promoted.

Kisuke or whoever does run the 12 will be too busy shovelling leftover war crimes out of the basement to actually run R&D.

Yamamoto has a long-standing agreement with Unohana that if he makes her take on One More Thing, he will not get the privilege of dying.

Ukitake is running the Kido corps, but he's also already got a foot in the grave.

Yamanoto isn't sure he can trust anyone else with lab equipment.

" ...Tousen." he says, nonchalant, visiting him in the hospital. "You seem to be rather accomplished at record-keeping and lab work."

"Last time you promoted me while I was in the hospital after a catastrophe, it extended my recovery by a solid five years and lead to an even greater one. No. Tell Kisuke to buck up and run R&D, it was his damn idea in the first place."

"Yes, obviously." Yamanoto says as though he had been planning that at all. "-but the court guard still needs to be supplied, so if Kisuke is running R&D, who is running the 12th?

"Muguruma."

"Pardon?"

"Kensei Muguruma might be the second-worst boss I've ever had but he is rigorously punctual, has an incredible work ethic, and can be trusted to stick to rules and regulations to the letter. He's a rigid, grouchy, hard ass, and a terrible match for the ninth, but he'd make an excellent quartermain." Kaname sighs.

Yamamoto ponders that for a bit.

"Also, he's running the newspaper over my dead body." Kaname elaborates. "He's contracted horoscope brainrot from Mashiro, I'm afraid."

"He may attempt to dispute that he should be running the Ninth as his prior demotion was unlawful, as is his right." Yamamoto nods. "It would be resolved by some kind of combat."

"I've gutted him once, I'll do it again." Kaname grunts and Yamamoto barks a laugh.

"I believe your judgement is sound, and will abide by your recommendation." Yamamoto nods, patting Kaname's hand. "I will inform Urahara and Muguruma of their new responsibilities."

"...Thank you, sir." Kaname mumbles, listening to Yamamoto open his notebook and write something down. "For your trust in me, and not promoting me again."

"Hm." Yamamoto nods.

Bansui, members of the Kido Corps, and more:

I have talked before about the menagerie of followers and allies Jin has cobbled together for his designs against the Soul Society, but I've never spoken on Bansui's own little collection of weirdos he has with him in the Kido Corps, so here's a little bit on all of them;

Wonderweiss Margela:

— Resurrected through a mixture of forbidden Kido and scientific excellence, they officially serve as one of Bansui's personal bodyguards (even if he truly has no need for one), though Bansui has, in his own way, taken to seeing Wonderweiss as something of an adopted son (or at least as close to one as someone like Bansui can envision).

— Wonderweiss, in line with their 'official role', is always somewhere near Bansui-- if they aren't actually walking around with him in the open, they are either cloaked by Bansui in some invisibility based Kido, or simply somewhere out of sight. Needless to say, if Bansui truly has need of Wonderweiss, or feels the need to sick them on someone, they will appear quickly.

— Has been improved by Bansui's experimenting and Hollowfied Evolution in a few ways. The most obvious improvement is their increased mental faculties across the board-- Wonderweiss is still lacking in overall intelligence, and they are still very childlike, but they are now actually somewhat rational, and they can form mostly coherent sentences to communicate with, if someone has the patience to listen.

The second and less obvious improvement Wonderweiss received from Bansui's experimenting and Hollowfied Evolution is their Resurrección: Segunda Etapa, which acts as an enhanced version of their initial release that allows them to 'Extinguish' the abilities of any foe they attack (a lot of caveats to that ofc but it's still pretty sick). To that note, Wonderweiss' initial Resurrección has been altered by Bansui from soley sealing away the abilities of Yamamoto's Zanpakuto, to sealing away the abilities of any Zanpakuto, or Quincy Schrift (again with many caveats but still sick as hell).

Saizo Fujibayashi:

— Chief Officer of the Kido Corps Shinkubantai and someone Bansui is supporting to succeed as head of the currently eviscerated Tsunayashiro Clan (an endeavor that of course is being opposed by the likes of the Kuchiki and Shihoin, and other distantly related Tsunayashiro who contest Saizo's claim). There's a lot of political and court intrigue going on with this one, along with everything else they're getting into.

— Bansui, on top of seeing Saizo as a future ally of his own Great House, recognizes their ability for Kido (haphazard as it is) and believes Saizo can be shaped into a powerful instrument of the Kido Corps-- maybe, in a few centuries, Saizo could even become Bansui's Vice Kido Chief, if someone more competent and disciplined doesn't come along first.

— Saizo often refers to Bansui as their 'uncle', and while this isn't actually the case, and isn't something Bansui endorses (it actually makes him sigh internally very deeply every-time he hears it), their relationship could indeed be likened to that.

Oko Yushima:

— Chief Officer of the Kido Corps Konpekibantai, they were rescued from the Nest of Maggots by Bansui and 'altered' by way of his Hollowfied Evolution and other procedures that stabilized their previously fractured psyche and freed them from their catatonia.

— Their research into Mod Souls and Artificial Souls in general has proved very useful to Bansui and the Kido Corps, allowing Bansui to advance many of his own Artificial Soul-related projects, and Kido based around them.

— While they have been 'altered' by Bansui's Hollowfied Evolution, and their brain was literally picked apart and re-arranged by them, Oko Yushima is still very much the same person they used to be, and in that vein, they don't really like anyone in the Kido Corps-- they respect Bansui for pulling them out of the Nest of Maggots and allowing them to continue whatever work they wish without the prying eyes of Central 46, however, and are loyal to him because of it.

— They are also a candidate for Bansui's Vice Kido Chief, but Bansui often finds them to be too meek, and isn't sure they would be able to carry out what he expects of his Vice Kido Chief.

Shaz Domino:

— Also referenced at the end of this drabble, but tl;dr, they were rescued from their infinitely sinking, Izuru-induced pit by Bansui and in turn, were convinced to join on and help him in their machinations. Shaz didn't require much convincing though, between owing Bansui their life and Bansui also sharing their goal of one day seeing a Hollowfied Quincy, they were truly two peas in a pod.

— They are secretly sent to aid Jin Kariya in the World of the Living, but they report back to Bansui, acting as another set of eyes and ears within Jin's group (along with Bansui's own alter-ego and half, Parca) for Bansui.

— In 'official' capacity related to the Kido Corps, they are the second of Bansui's bodyguards, though they engage in their official role far less than Wonderweiss, often not actually being around Bansui at all.

Shaz is grateful to Bansui and sees them as their shot at becoming a 'Hollowfied Quincy' one day, but they truthfully loathe the Soul Society and Shinigami in general, and they often can't stand being around the other ranking or rank-and-file members of the Kido Corps, and because of this, when they are in the Soul Society and not acting as another one of Jin's minions, they are often skulking about somewhere by themselves.

I have so many lgbt canons for my kins/fictives.

But the most prominent ones are: Yellow from PokeSpe is genderfluid; switches between masc and fem days. Yoosung Kim from MysMes (Mystic Messenger) is a trans male.

Basically the whole Mekakushi Dan is under the LGBTQ+ umbrella with Tsubomi Kido being a demigirl and Takane Enomoto being agender. Shuuya Kano is genderfluid and uses his eye ability to present however he wants, having fem, masc and agender days. Hibiya Amamiya is a trans male, which is why he's so big on trying to prove he's a man; that trans feel of trying to prove yourself. If we talk about Yaki (aka the Snake of Retaining Eyes) she's a female but sometimes pretends to be a male to mess around with people, even not caring if people use he/him on her. So basically I guess gender non-conforming in a sense? I could go on but I'd run outta space for sure. Might do another part later (btw mod party cat, all mentioned characters are both kins and fictives BC my brain said I get both)

And then let's talk about TRI! The series where Koushiro is checking Mimi out 24x7 like an object, he calls her egotistical/self centered for acting impulsively to save a friend - using the same wording that the mean girls in festival committee use (bully alert 🚨, he doesn't even apologise for doing that btw 🚩), only then shows up to stare at her in a cheerleader uniform, ignores all the concern that she shows for him despite him being rude to her and Meiko both and ends up having way more chemistry with Takeru throughout the series (KouKeru my beloveds 😍).

But it's important to mention the guy who does take a W for Mimi in Tri, JOU KIDO!!! He accepts Mimi for who she is, doesn't criticise her actions, understands that her aggressive love is filled with nothing but pure intentions, uplifts her mood when she needs it the most and showers her words of affirmation that eventually lead to Palmon's mega evolution. And for that he deserves a big squishy hug, which he gets from Mimi 🥰 Honourable mention for taking W's for Mimi in Tri will also go to Meiko, she becomes her ride or die in such a short time of knowing her because she sees Mimi for the kind soul that she is. She also deserves a hug, and she gets it from Mimi too 🥰

In Tri we also see Mimi refer to Taichi and Yamato as handsome (and she does ask Koushiro if he's interested in her cause she's cuter, man for someone with a lot of brains he sure does care only about her looks!🚩) She starts recording TaiYama the minute they get into that Ferris wheel, she and Taichi walk a lot of places together don't they, she and Meiko share a meal with Taichi and Yamato in the Odaiba Onsen must I go on ~ Please do a full rewatch to see how Koushiro proves he's not a good match for Mimi in Tri with his ficklemindedness~

Next up: The Reboot, my other lovechild, I kid you not worstie, me and the Reboot writers share the exact same braincells, like legit, in the entirety of the series run, the most worthwhile Koumi hint they gave was them sitting in a Garage together at the end 🤣 The amount of quality time she spent with Taichi on the other hand, chef's kiss, and the instant bonding with Jou where she could tease him from the minute they met, WOW A BIGGER CHEF'S KISS 😘

Who are your top three favorite characters and why? (It can be arrancars, espada, humans, soul reapers, zanpakuto spirits, souls, visoreds, fullbringers, and of course I can’t forget the quincies): Yumichika...like of course Ikkaku Kenpachi

Who is/are your least favorite character(s) and why?: So many, but none I like HATE, I just have no interest in when they're on screen PERSONALLY: Toshiro Gin Hisagi Kira Hinamori Most of the fullbringers Shino Madarame (solely because she brought in the storyline that ikkaku is from a noble/upper class family) Omaeda Bount Arc guys Mod Soul arc guys Kon (just for being a perv) Ulquiorra (i like his design i just...i never get him so i never get into him y'know?) Pepe (...just makes me uncomfortable which is intentional but...) Zabimaru (ONLY in the Zanpakuto arc design, turn back into the baboon please even though i like rough-voiced women, i hate the snake child)

Favorite minor character?: I'm not sure what counts for minor cause Kubo is so wishy-washy with character's presences. But, Tatsuki, lesbian of all time. Or Jackie Tristan.

Favorite zanpakuto?: Character-wise: Fuji/Ruri'iro Kujaku (causes the gay allegories, will always be famous) Aesthetic-wise: Chika Shihōin's Zanpakutō (pretty, love a tassle)

Favorite shikai? Ability-wise: Sakasama no Sekai (i think it's really fun and relatively simple and can catch anyone off-guard but Katen Kyōkotsu is also fun but soo complicated i still don't fully get its rules sometimes) Aesthetic-wise: Ichigo's initial shikai (talented, brilliant, incredible, iconic)

Favorite bankai?: Ability-wise: Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame (spoilers) (it's op as hell and sooo in character for Urahara with the dissection vibe) Aesthetic-wise: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi (the image of the blades rising in the dark has always stuck with me but there's alot of contenders Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū or Minazuki)

Favorite kido? (It can be bakudo, hado, or kaido): Man, idk, Rikujōkōrō cause it's the only one I remember the ability of

Favorite squad? Squad 11 of course, without question.

Favorite captain?: Kenpachi but I also don't think he's a good captain sdjhgjdhg. So, Shunsui I think, he's the most competent. Or Mayuri, cause he's weird and interesting.

Favorite lieutenant?: I think Ikkaku? Cause of his loyalty. But also his ass does not do the lieutenant's work so actually probably Nanao.

What’s your favorite opening theme from the series?: Orange Range - *Asterisk, OP1 (always and forever)

What’s your favorite ending theme from the series?: My Pace - SunSet Swish, ED 6 (i just like the beat)

Favorite manga panel?: This is like evil, there's too much choice. Like I LOVE kubo's use of negative space so I adore so many of those impact panels. I think Kyoraku Shunsui's Bankai reveal page slays cause of the paint texture. Rose's star blast wound panel. Ichigo's vasto lorde form reveal. Soooo many panels in the Unohanna vs. Zaraki fight like her bankai reveal. I'm going to keep this in mind when I do my re-read after the anime ends and then come back to this kxjhgkjdhfg.

Most heart-wrenching death?: Unohana. I think it was sad for the characters but mostly for ME, cause she served every ounce of cunt and then died. I always say, if Kubo is to finally abandon his habit of reviving/bringing characters back, I hope he stills brings her back no matter what. Tousen's is up there.

Favorite arc and why? Soul Society: The Sneak Entry Arc, hands down. AND NOT JUST CAUSE YUMICHIKA IS INTRODUCED, it's the arc that has the most fights I'm interested in, the most development for some characters and others get to shine. I do definitely think nostalgia is a big reason too because I think that the first time I ever saw Bleach and it's where I got to in Bleach before dropping off when I was a kid. But I do love it.

Favorite movie and why?: I think Memories of Nobody, maybe Hell Verse? Because I think they had good stories and I remember being really into either it was the animation or emotion of Memories of Nobody. I think Hell Verse, I liked the animation. But honestly, I don't remember much about the movies and I watched them only last year.

Favorite piece of merch that you own? I think it's my Yumichika tote bag? But I love alot of my merch, and especially my Ichigo figure my friend's boyfriend won for me in one of those remote crane games (and it got lost to the transit void and we'd all given up hope).

Do you have any tattoos? Yes. Yumichika cat tattoo by @ kiera_tattoo (no pics cause there's something we need to tweak when I can next get a trip to London ;-; ), but I love it!! still thinking about getting a panel tattoo or sword but atm not Looking for one.

If you’re a fic writer, who do you write for? I don't write fic much but it is Yumichika/Ikkaku but usually just musing on how a reveal might look or their past. It's not really shippy.

If you are an artist, do you have a favorite character to draw?: I don't do fanart much, so I've only drawn Yumichika.

If you could be in the Bleach universe would you be a soul reaper, visored, human, quincy, espada or arrancar?: God I'd probably be a human who sits at home not questioning buildings getting exploded.
