New zones, customization options, and Emerald Powers: a recap of the Sonic Superstars cover story
Tumblr media
Issue 358 of the Gameinformer magazine was published this Tuesday, and its 12-page column on the upcoming Sonic Superstars revealed a new look into its development, and previewed a number of in-game features and zones.
Here's everything you need to know.
Major takeaways
New zone names: Sky Temple, Pinball Carnival, Lagoon City, Sand Sanctuary, Press Factory, and unannounced Golden Capital.
New Emerald Powers: Avatar, Bullet, Water, Ivy, Vision, Slow, Extra, Super.
Expect vast character customization options in the brand new Items shop.
Select stages in a Generations-style World Map.
New zones
Characters have the choice of going through a normal act or a character-specific act. For example, finishing Act 1 of Speed Jungle Zone as Sonic allows you to choose between either playing the second act of Speed Jungle or an "Act Sonic," an alternate act of Speed Jungle where you zoom as Sonic, running away from a terrorizing Fang the Sniper.
There is reportedly a World Map similar to Generations where you run in a 2D-plane to select a stage.
There is also an items shop where you can trade medals in for customizable parts. Apparent, you can customize your "head, body, arms, legs, accessories color, and something called prototype."
Tumblr media
The third zone of the game is reportedly called Sky Temple Zone.
In the zone, there is a mini-game similar to the game "Breakout," where you turn into a ball and aim to break bricks.
The climax or the ending of the zone is a massive storm.
The fourth zone is called Pinball Carnival Zone.
As the name suggests, "a giant pinball arena and fast sequences with fireworks setting off."
Tumblr media
The fifth zone is called Lagoon City, which is filled with submerged city ruins and water slides.
Act 1 is mostly above water whereas Act 2 has several underwater sequences.
Amy's character-specific act of Lagoon City is fruit-based, with several gimmicks like a fruit based robots and such.
Tumblr media
Sand Sanctuary Zone is the sixth zone of Sonic Superstars and a seventh zone reportedly called Press Factory Zone.
Filenames in the newly released screenshots also disclosed the officially unannounced Golden Capital Zone.
Emerald Powers
Tumblr media
Emerald Powers were inspired by the Wisps mechanic from Sonic Colors.
Every stage has a giant gold ring and a giant blue ring. Completing the giant gold rings rewards you a Chaos Emerald and the the blue ring rewards you a medal.
Both special stages have the same central gameplay mechanic: swing from floating bubbles toward the moving objective.
Emerald Powers can be used by using the right stick and operate on a cooldown, with each star post checkpoint replenishing your cooldown meter.
Tumblr media
Avatar (Blue Emerald)
Allows you to create clones of yourself.
Useful for defeating any enemy that lies on you path.
Tumblr media
Bullet (Red Emerald)
Allows you to direct and shoot your character at a specified direction.
"It's an extremely useful action; it's probably the most useful action for this kind of game," Iizuka said.
Tumblr media
Water (Cyan Emerald)
Allows you to interact with any body of water, like swimming freely underwater or climbing up waterfalls.
Tumblr media
Ivy (Green Emerald)
Allows you to grow upward vines.
Helpful in reaching higher areas.
Can also be utilized to help your teammates in co-op mode.
Tumblr media
Vision (Purple Emerald)
Allows you to see hidden objects like platforms, rings, or items found in the level.
Tumblr media
Slow (Yellow Emerald)
Allows the player to slow down everything on screen.
Helpful in tighter platforming sequences or boss encounters.
Tumblr media
Extra (White Emerald)
Unlocks character-specific actions.
Sonic – Homing Attack: Unlocks the Homing Attack from the modern titles.
Tails – Tornado Spin: Unlocks a devastating tornado attack that can destroy enemies in front of you
Amy – Hammer Throw: Unlocks the ability for Amy to throw hammers instead of the usual Hammer Swing.
Knuckles – Punch: Unlocks the ability to punch for Knuckles.
Super Form (All 7 Emeralds)
Characters can turn into their Super form after collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
Characters won't have any specific abilities outside of being invincible and becoming faster.
Emerald Powers can still be used in Super form.
Development
Tumblr media
The concept of Superstars came from a Zoom call by Naoto Ohshima during the initial COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
Ohshima and Iizuka held producer roles for Sonic Superstars.
Despite hinting at a short development time than expected, Ohshima was impressed by Sonic Team and Iizuka.
"Though Arzest and Ohshima led development efforts on Sonic Superstars, Sonic Team collaborated frequently, with Iizuka and Ohshima constantly sharing ideas of and production duties."
There were talks between Iizuka and Whitehead's team following the release of Mania where concepts were considered, but the project fell through; however, Iizuka does states that he is "pleased that the next generation of Classic Sonic that we talked about with them has been achieved with Superstars."
Iizuka said that the programming for Superstars "is completely unique and done from scratch by Arzest."

Sonic Fighting Game Dream Roster!
Tumblr media
Me and My Metamore messed around to make a sonic fighting game roster and I wanted to share kinda like the roster and the thought behind it and stuff for fun since this was a silly little fun thing. Our limitations where only including canon sonic characters in the main roster, the roster was going to be 24 characters because that was the base Dragon Ball Fighters Z roster size at launch, we were assuming the game would be an another Arcsystem Works Tag Fighter. I elected not to go for an even gender ratio like I normally would since we were aiming for a realistic roster but obviously when between viable options I favored a woman. 10/24 of the base roster are women so pretty close to half and like do Mecha Sonic, Chaos or Omega even really have genders? This game would also be one that focused on a more modern control style given Sonic is intended for children but also that modern controls are becoming simply the norm.
The team play is important for this game since sonic is not really a fights alone guy. Since Sonic 2 Sonic has been a serious about working together to overcome evil and it's been that way since with Sonic 3 adding another playable friend, Knuckles Chaotics having a whole squad, leading to the eventual adventure games and that eras bigger rosters. Like Skullgirls you could pick between having 1, 2 or 3 people in your team and have the characters enhanced on the smaller team number but lose access to the full sweet of abilities being teamed up gives you.
Tumblr media
It's one thing to make a roster but another thing to try and think about how the characters would play. I have minor concepts on many of the playable characters, one requirement we had for putting someone on the not DLC part of the roster was having an idea of how they played.
Sonic obviously establishes the Foundational parts of the game being a rush down character to stay true to the archtype but one with a bit more resilience, he'd have just a tiny bit of everything to teach people while staying true to the speed focus. Blaze gets a mild zoning game with fire balls but is more aggressive being more of a combo focused character with the ability to further her combo potential with her blazing blade super similar to Juri in Street Fighter. Surge would be a character who was able to damage herself to increase damage to others, reckless in her desire to prove her strength and get out of people's shadows. Metal Sonic would play like sonic with a few different moves and a tankier set up but lower combo potential. Shadow would have the most advance moveset of the rushdown characters. having tricky moves that result in high pay offs but require solid execution.
Tumblr media
The Balanced characters present most of the games features in the movesets. Honey the Cat being from Sonic Fighters makes her the perfect character to be the most basic fighting game character having basically just Ryu's moveset with no frills but some additional girly flare to give her some personality. Trip is a transformation character like Hellsing from Blaze blue with her dragon mode providing her a more aggressive style but a bigger hit box and body while still working off the more fundamental gameplay. Tails would have a bit of it all but with a bit of a stronger zoning game as a charge character. Emerald being from Sonic's second fighting game and copying movesets would be like Seth from Street Fighter 5 and other similar characters giving them a diverse moveset using moves from other characters.
Amy Rose would be a perfect midrange character wanting to not be too close or too far, her hammer being the distance away she wants to be. Tangle would have some command grabs she could preform further away and in general she wants to be fighting with just a bit more room than the average fighter. The deadly six are summon type character who work at any range but average out to about wanting the same distance as Amy and Tangle. Each of the six bring different abilities to the table similar to Captain Ginyu in DBFZ.
Tumblr media
Chaos is a tricky grappler with a lot of strange movement tools. Big the Cat is our big time joke character where he is just trying to find froggy in battle and your just in his way accidently getting boddied by his long distance fishing hook grabs and friendly hugs as Froggy is set up on opponents allowing Big to hit with bigger damage. Omega is a more classic big body, get the fuck out my way or I'll kill you zoner with a weak projectile it can use to discourage running away from him.
Rouge is our iconic trap setter allowing her to steal wins from opponents who aren't ready to deal with the puzzle game she throws before them which includes inflicting some debuffs that remove options from your opponents for a particular amount of time like tagging out. Starline has his warp topaz for movement allowing him a more zoner focused gameplay style with a command grab that is styled after his hypnosis and otherwise his inventions being little traps on the field to control where the foe is and their approach. Nights and Cosmo would be characters more focused on the assist role creating items that their team mates can use with buffs. Nights would have a higher risk reward where the opponent could also use them where Cosmos would be locked to benefiting the player. Finally Eggman is tanky with all the traps and annoyances of a zoner. He can't do big damage but he is hard to take down and there is probably a boss version of him that is even more annoying.
Tumblr media
Fang/Knack had the name sniper, their an archetypical zoner. Whisper's whispeon allows her to customize her shots by switching which whisp she has loaded into the gun, this allows her a diverse arrow of zoning options allowing her to always keep her opponent guessing on what is the best way to approach her. It's no use trying to beat Silver when he can yet you away to keep his ideal distance having a weak command grab that allows him to toss his foe full screen and keep up the aggressive physic assault.
Cream is our Puppet character with a special twist on being a puppet character with a puppet that evolves over time from Cream to Cream + Cheese to Gemerald building a meter to have a stronger puppet to use but stage 2 having some reasons to use it over stage 3. That can be paired with one last appearance in her ultimate attack allowing her mother Vanilla to get mad at the foe for attacking her daughter and finish off the opponent in a motherly rage. Knuckles would function like most boxing characters only having punches and being a bit of a bully in battle who is hard to handle but his special ability to glide would allow her far more air mobility then most other characters in the game. Espio would be a classic ninja character with all that entails having lots of moving and plenty of tricks to serve. Jet wouldn't be fighting alone coming in swinging with his crew able to dive in from the air like a hawk and take opponents into large air combos where on the ground he is pretty lacking.
Tumblr media
While this is typically the type of thing reserved for Youtube videos but I felt like idk writing out this kind of thing and if you enjoyed it please let me know. I had a blast doing it and I would love to make more dream rosters with my lesbian edge where I am gonna favor women. I think these are just fun ways to nerd out about a series I enjoy and I'd love to go even more in depth I stopped myself from being extra indulgent on this one but I'd have loved to go into how I imagine a single player mode would work, talk more about universal mechanics and everything else.
All I want is some feedback if you enjoyed it but if you wanted to I am always happy to get support on making my own original queer art over on Patreon and Ko-fi which includes my current ambition to make an SRPG along with my for sure going to happen TTRPG projects.

if i could do a sonic universe reboot i would make the sonic satam stuff and the sonic adventure stuff happen in the same timeline. hear me out: all we gotta do is pull a donkey kong junior. we need there to be two sonics without any time travel.
first half ("classic"/SatAM part)
Gerald Robotnik is an esteemed human scientist from Earth in his 60s, working on creating the ultimate lifeform ostensibly for the US government as a weapon but really to save his granddaughter Maria's life.
Gerald's son Julian, father of a child Maria and infant Ivo, is absent from Earth, having inherited Gerald's intelligence but, after living in his father's shadow, has turned mega evil in his 30s and has somehow given himself a one-way trip to Mobius - a planet that has solved all its social problems and has no need for military technology, making it an easy target to be conquered. he turns Mobius into an autocratic dystopia where only he and his robotic army holds any power. desperate to cosmically one-up his father, he keeps his given name a secret in order to be known simply as "Doctor Robotnik" to his subjugated citizens.
cue the Knothole freedom fighters ensemble of Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine Depardieu, Rotor the Walrus, and a young Charles "Sonic" the Hedgehog. a miracle occurs when the freedom fighters find a Chaos Emerald by chance, and "Sonic" uses its power to remove Robotnik from power, but not kill him - in a show of idealism, he shows mercy to Julian and decides that the Mobians should get the chance to put him on trial. this backfires when Julian gets ahold of some Chaos energy for himself, which he uses to flee back to Earth. given the urgency of his escape, the process by which he flees actually swaps him with his son, stranding a very young Ivo on Mobius.
interlude/timeskip
now back on Earth, Julian Robotnik goes crawling back to his father. the residual Chaos energy surrounding him (shaped by its last natural user, "Sonic") is scanned and partially replicated by Gerald, resulting in the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog. Gerald doesn't actually want to make a bioweapon and secretly puts power limiters on Shadow. when Julian learns of this, he blows the whistle to the government, resulting in the deaths of Gerald and Maria, and Shadow being placed into stasis. Julian is put in charge of the Space Colony ARK and turns it into a Chaos Emerald-powered superweapon, but has no method of returning to Mobius to actually obtain the Emeralds.
on Mobius, society is rebuilt basically as it was pre-Robotnik. the freedom fighters grow into adults and go their separate ways. Charles' younger sister gives birth to a baby blue hoglet, who is named Sonic after Charles' freedom fighter nickname. Charles and Sally adopt an orphaned two-tailed fox, who becomes very good friends with his nephew as the two grow up into their teenage years.
Ivo grows up too, learning of Robotnik's infamy and legacy as the most powerful force on Mobius since its ancient times.
second half ("modern" part)
you saw this bit coming. Ivo has grown up into Doctor Eggman and wishes to turn Mobius (either in full or in part) into his "Eggman Empire", but is constantly foiled by our good friend Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower, who are joined by friends Amy and Cream, and additional cast Knuckles and Rouge. though not seeing any of the action directly at this point, another major supporting character is our old (and now visibly aged) friend Charles, or "Uncle Chuck" as he's known now.
eventually learning of exactly how his father's downfall occurred, Eggman gathers the Chaos Emeralds himself to ensure his victory against Sonic and his friends, but even then is foiled... sort of. the machine meant to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds transports everyone to Earth, a la the beginning of Sonic X. with our Mobian heroes now stranded on Earth and with Eggman beginning to learn of his family's earthly legacy, the events of Sonic Adventure occur.
once resolved, the cast returns to Mobius, including Shadow (wanting to leave his traumatic past of Earth and the ARK behind) and Eggman (what? that sneaky fucker).
the schemes of Eggman continue solely on Mobius as they did before. goodbye Earth forever, Eggman and his Sol Dimension counterpart Eggman Nega are the only humans Mobius ever sees again. the closest Eggman gets to his goal is building "Eggmanland" during the events of Sonic Colours.
...
aaaand scene. that's how i'd put it together. i almost hate to remove Uncle Chuck and Tails from SatAM and but i think it's the only way to reconcile the events of SatAM and the events of X/Adventure without making Eggman just like, Doctor Robotnik but after six years, which i really don't like because actual dictator Robotnik and cheesy villain Eggman are just way too different as characters.
also - and this part is vital - i wouldn't give the aged Charles lanky Modern Sonic proportions in his modern appearance. he's the Classic Sonic and he stays roundie and grows a grey moustache. one must imagine a short old Uncle Chuck at a lanky teenage Sonic's birthday party with the two of them enjoying chilli dogs together.

SEGA's Most Famous Hedgehog Speeds His Way To... A Saturday Night T3 Marathon Special?
Hello, anime fans and video gamers. I am Gabriel Ramos, DJ and live-streamer for Toon Time Theater. Since it is approaching Sonic the Hedgehog's birthday, I plan on celebrating it the night before with a 12-episode SONIC X marathon. I know it may sound overkill, but it is the fact that SONIC X aired on 4Kids' Saturday morning blocks in the past few decades, particularly, the Fox Box, The CW 4Kids, Toonzai and lastly, Vortexx on the CW. I am eager to run a marathon and test the waters to see if viewers are interested in seeing more SONIC X on the New Gabe Order Twitch channel. I figured because of the isekai anime saturation that's happening now, and I have TSUBASA: Reservoir Chronicle as my only current isekai anime in the Saturday morning lineup. After the marathon, I will set up a promoted poll that will last until Friday morning when T3 Express signs on. I will check the poll live and reveal the next Saturday morning lineups before I live-stream an episode of Bartender. If no one votes, a draw happens, or if most of you vote to keep SONIC X out of the Saturday morning cram session, then I will cut SONIC X unless I plan another special Saturday night marathon. I doubt it'll happen, but who knows?
Here are the episodes that will be played on the marathon, but you don't have to take my word for it. Mark your calendars anime fans and Sonic fans, because this marathon will happen on June 22 at 6:30 PM PDT.

12.0A - "Beating Eggman ~Part 1~"
All of the episodes will be live-streamed in Japanese with English subtitles for the sake of using the uncut version.
Not to mention the peepshow will all be Sonic-themed, so expect songs from Crush 40, Doug Robb of Hoobastank, Zebrahead, One OK Rock and more musicians that kept the spirit of the fast blue hedgehog alive.
In case this is your first time seeing these kinds of posts, this is Toon Time Theater, a series of cartoon block live streams that happen Friday mornings and Saturday mornings on the New Gabe Order Twitch channel. The main purpose of Toon Time Theater is to serve as a revival effort for modern Saturday morning cartoon blocks, providing viewers the latest and greatest of animation at more convenient timeslots. My Twitch channel is here in case you forget:

Chaosverse Sonic: Doppelgängers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Based on the Sonic Recolors the internet knows and mostly spites, the Doppel-Gang is a 5-member strike team created by Dr. Eggman meant for dealing with the Restoration members, one by one, or all at once. Each one has different skills, personalities and abilities, but all of them share the same goal:
THE DOWNFALL OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG.]
In order of eldest to youngest:
EDG-01: Sabre. The speedster of the team, with a Ego just as big as his Original. Charged to the brim with Electricity from the Yellow Gem and the Thunder Shield Monitor, he’s been shown to easily reach speeds the blue blur has to boost to achieve. (Based off of: Sonic Movies/Adventure 2. Fighting Style: Sonic Battle [Sonic/Shadow])
EDG-02: Razor. Skilled brawler who lives for trading blows with his foes, and even more for defeating them. He’s what happens when you fuse the Hyper-go-on energy of the Spikes, Burst and Drill wisps into a warrior capable of harnessing the energies to it’s fullest. (Based off of: Unleashed/Colors. Fighting Style: The Dark Brotherhood [Sonic/Knuckles/Omega], Black Knight [Sonic])
EDG-03: Guerilla. The Leader of the Doppel-Dang, who’s adaptive nature makes him a dangerous opponent. He require 4 Blue Rings to suppress his power, compared to the rest of the Doppel-Gang requiring 2 Red Rings. Because of this, and a powerful amount of Ring Energy emitting from his very being (oddly), the rest follow his commands out of instinct.. and possibly fear. (Based off of: Forces/Prime. Fighting Style: Frontiers [Sonic])
EDG-04: Analog. The more laid-back member, his calm demeanor by no means make him any less of a strong combatant, or a smart one, for that matter. Chaos energy is the name of the game here, as he can not only use Psychokinesis like Silver, but also Chaos Control, mostly as a method of Time Manipulation. (Based off of: 06/X/Archie. Fighting Style: Project 06 [Silver], Archie [Sonic and anyone else who would be a good fit, idk])
EDG-05: Eclipse. The Smallest and probably the odd one out. They’re mostly based off of Sonic from his younger times, dialed up to Modern’s level. Fueled by Chaos Drives and possibly the Phantom Energy from the Doctor himself, he’s able to use the Extra Emerald Powers that Sonic used in the Northstar Islands, as well as use Chaos Control to teleport like Shadow can… for some reason. (Based off of: Classic/ OVA/Sonic the Comic. Fighting Style: Fighters [Sonic], Sonic the Comic [Sonic, minus the air vibration stuff])

Hello again, do you have any cute Sonikal Headcanon’s?
Tumblr media
Oh hi there! Are you the same Anon who asked about the first kiss? I already appreciate your cute asks! As for your cute Sonikal headcanons, well I have come up with alot of them throughout the years so lemme see what I can do…
~~~~~~~Cute Sonikal headcanons~~~~~~~~
-Here's my possible explanation to the question that has always remained a mystery to me ever since I heard it: Even though she never once introduced herself to him, how did Sonic know Tikal's name? Shortly after Tikal's sacrifice and the birth of Angel Island. The echidna temple was rebuilt to serve as a shrine dedicated to the incident told by witnessing survivors (Makes sense because the temple is inspired by the famous Mayan temple of Tikal). During his early adventure days after meeting Knuckles, Sonic first explored the abandoned Mystic Ruins and heard about the story of a tragedy that fell upon the ancient echidna clan due to the warmongering chief's selfishness and greed and how his daughter sealed herself and the monster in the Master Emerald to stop the destruction.
-Using his ability to channel the M.E.'s power to show people/objects held in the emerald, Knuckles shows Sonic the echidna girl. (Chaos isn't seen because Tikal trapped him in her blue water ring to secure extra escape prevention) Despite essentially being fridged, Tikal actually isn't frozen or disempowered. (She mostly just sleeps when there's nothing else to do) She can still channel the M.E.'s power, transport people/objects and communicate to people And even told Sonic not to rescue her because she fears the destruction that could occur again if she and Chaos were to be set free without plan B.This makes Sonic sad and he often thinks about her even if he doesn't admit it to Tails and Amy. He can't imagine how much Tikal had to sacrifice to stop Chaos from destroying the rest of the world – her freedom, her old friends and family, her opportunity to enjoy life without watching her home turn into a war zone just so everyone else can enjoy those privileges. Not only does she remind him of someone he vaguely remembers in the past, but he also knew what it was like to be confined into stasis for a long period of time due to a tragedy, except she had to go through this ALOT longer. He wants to save her so badly. 😢
-Sonic’s most challenging yet rewarding battle after SA1 is Perfect Chaos. There's not a whole lot to be afraid of when he's basically an invincible Super Saiyan who can easily beat Eggbutt’s robots on a regular basis, but what makes Chaos a unique rival to Sonic before Shadow is the fact that not only is he literally a body of one of his weaknesses: Water, (The fact he is powerful enough to trap him in water and drown him if he can sure as heck doesn't help) but he initially viewed him as another one of those baddies of the week he'll simply kick the butt of as usual, but Tikal, the girl Sonic wanted to help out the most, showed him Chaos was actually that once kind, gentle monster from that historical incident she had to suffer to tame. It was pretty scary for Sonic to tame a literal water God with a whole flood around him, but boy it  was worth it! Now he can rest reassured that Tikal and the calmed down water creature found peace again and can start a new happier life. Now he just makes sure she gets the comfort and new friends and adventures she might need to heal from her trauma at any opportunity he gets.
-Sonic is one of the few modern friends of hers Tikal trusts the most to have a listening ear when she wants comfort when she feels down from her memories of her old life and family she lost so the pain and sorrow inside her wouldn't consume the qualities that made her lovable amongst her former people: Love, joy, kindness & hope. Ever since that day, Sonic was the light to her gloomy darkness. Thanks to him, Tikal doesn’t have to fridge herself or Chaos for another 5000+ years until another madman comes and uses Chaos as a weapon of destruction, she can now have a chance to live a more happier, peaceful life, make herself a new home, make new friends, have new adventures, have more freedom and even be a new hero alongside her light. Tikal is anointed as the new chieftain of her new friends one day much to her surprise and dismay because she now associates a chieftain with her father, who used his position of power to harm others. But Sonic and his other friends reassures her that she'll be a fine chieftain and use her position of power to do good instead of bad, to help those in need and advocate for peace and harmony.
-Even when away from each other, Sonic and Tikal still find ways to communicate with each other from long distances due to their interesting telepathy ability and their creative ways of communicating to the emeralds, particularly when they are relaxing at the end of the day and they don't have anything else to do or anyone else to talk to. Due to their connection to the emeralds’ energy, they can also feel each other's energy when touching each other and feeling a certain emotion. When one is stressed and another is calm and touches the stressed one, the calm, positive energy transmits into the stressed one, and they also calm down. Sonic (Even though he doesn't want to admit it due to him not normally being a physical touchy kind of person) and Tikal likes to hug and hold hands for a reason.
-Tikal didn't really get to explore the world outside of her home place in her life. So for their dates, Sonic takes her to explore a new fun adventure and try new things, whether it's beautiful scenery or a new cuisine. Tikal has a high spice tolerance and loves chili peppers, not only does she like chili dogs as much as Sonic does, maybe it's not spicy enough to her and she often tries to make it spicier by using spices and/or hot sauce. Both her and Sonic often have fun eating spicy food together and watching their less spice tolerant friends suffering. 😂 And they also like to hang out at beaches and the sunflower field of course. They also like to spend a quiet peaceful day together hanging out at a chao garden and parenting the chao as if they're their children. And although Sonic doesn’t want to swim for obvious reasons, he doesn’t mind joining in a pool where Tikal is swimming in long as he simply sits on a stair step where he can still feel a body of water on half of his body while knowing he can easily get out if he starts getting uncomfortable. He surprisingly finds pure peace and serenity when he just chills that way.
-Tikal also sometimes joins Sonic in defending small, helpless critters from Eggman. She despises that guy ever since he fueled her closest friend's anger and used him as a weapon of destruction. Just imagine how she would feel about him when she learns he also takes small, helpless, innocent critters and uses them as machine batteries and pollutes the environment around them. She would not kill him, but she will wreck his replaceable machine's good with her gymnastic warrior moves and her newfounded spiritual powers she can get creative with. Forming orbs with her hands? Fling them as bombs. Wanna create a spiritual border to trap Eggman to keep him from causing trouble? Call this girl. Summoning lightning? Causing stunning earthquakes with a slam of a palm?  Hydrokinesis? Shovel claw whenever Knuckles isn't using it? She got it. Mix that with Sonic’s speed, boosts, spindashes strong enough to create underground tunnels, his super form and whirlwind forming and you sure get one heck of a power couple that gives even Superman and Wonder Woman a run for their money. Whirlwind + Water = Waterspout
Tumblr media
-It took a while for these two to decide to get married due to their own things to do and their own issues to work on. But when Tikal finally uses her position as the new chieftain to propose to Sonic with a golden ring, they come up with a very creative wedding ceremony idea that fits for both of their personalities. Both are a bit introverted, but also like to spend time with their friends and make them feel included in the happy memories, But they're also worried about how Amy would react to Sonic marrying someone who is not her. So for their wedding day, they hosted a “fancy party" and put on a dress and tuxedo respectively, but didn't make them look too obviously like wedding gowns. They had fun food and dancing as usual, but Sonic and Tikal sneaked their vows and the kiss the bride ritual when everyone else isn't looking and then he'll bridal-carry her and run into the night to their honeymoon. Their interactions after their marriage aren’t even that different from their normal interactions. Yes, there’s a few kisses and cuddles here and there (They prefer to kiss and cuddle in isolated areas where it's more intimate for them), but they mostly just keep doing what they’ve been doing.
Welp, that’s all I can think of without letting you wait for my answer for much longer. I hope you enjoy reading my headcanons. Cya next time!
Game Informer did an article on Sonic Superstars, which included explaining what each Emerald Power does, and I must say, it really draws unintentional parallels to Sonic Prime, both clear and subtle:
"Blue Emerald: Avatar - Clones of your character speed across the screen to defeat enemies" The Shatterverse as a whole, as there are alternate versions of most of the main cast, or "clones" if you will
"Green Emerald: Ivy - Vines grow up from where your character stands to help you reach new areas. You can even direct where they grow" Boscage Maze, for obvious reasons
"Cyan Emerald: Water - Flowing water becomes traversable as your character can even climb up waterfalls" No Place, again for obvious reasons
"Red Emerald: Bullet - Your character can shoot like a cannonball in any direction" New Yoke City, as there's a lot of shooting involved from both the Chaos Council and the Resistance
"Purple Emerald: Vision - You can see hidden objects and platforms in the level while this power is active" The Grim, as Nine is able to see the hidden potential of this Shatterspace
"Yellow Emerald: Slow - Everything around your character slows down temporarily" Ghost Hill, as time seems to be frozen all together rather than slowing down
"White Emerald: Extra - Your character gains a unique special attack (Sonic: Homing Attack, Tails: Tornado Spin, Knuckles: Punch, Amy: Hammer Throw)" This isn't directly related to Prime, but since Modern Sonic uses the Homing Attack, I think his friends' Modern selves should use these abilities in the future, and this doesn't even need to be said, but "Complete Collection: Super - Your character turns invincible and faster, with rings depleting over time"
It's also worth noting that the Emeralds with ties to specific Shatterspaces all have matching colors with their respective Gateways in the Void, while the Blue Emerald's connection could just be due to the blue guy being the one to shatter the Paradox Prism, and the explanation for the White Emerald's power may be that white is composed of every color of the light and can therefore fit a specific character's needs the most
Tumblr media
It's pretty crazy that the emeralds individually have these abilities in this game but don't in the mainline games. It's too bad. It would add some game play elements whenever you gather a certain emerald. Frontiers could have been a good idea to test it out
SONIC ENCYCLO-SPEED-IA: THE TKP REPORT
Tumblr media
Here are some of my findings and observations from the Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia! This is mostly stuff I think TKP readers would find interesting - i.e., glimpses into what may or may not now be considered canon, references to SatAM and the Archie comics, bits where Ian's voice as a writer shines through, stuff like that
IN GENERAL, KEEP IN MIND: This is not a lore book. You aren't going to get an explanation of where the Chaos Emeralds came from or anything like that. This is written from a real world perspective, not an in-universe one. So instead, expect things like basic story synopses, lists of levels and bosses, and descriptions of what each game brings to the table mechanically. Honestly, there's very little new info that you couldn't already glean from the wiki. It's more about the package. Having this nice book to hold in your hands so you can flip through 30 years of games. However, because said info was reviewed by Sega, some of the things that were acknowledged or clarified (or excluded, for that matter) are interesting to me, an insufferable Sonic nerd
CLASSIC SONIC
Wherever possible, the book sticks to the original Japanese canon (with trivia factoids sprinkled throughout to acknowledge localization differences). For instance, the section on Sonic 3 has the old lore about the civilization that fell due to fighting over the Chaos Emeralds (STRONGLY implied to be the Knuckles Clan here) and says that Knuckles believed the Death Egg was a giant dragon egg
As expected, the section on Sonic Spinball has this to say:
Tumblr media
Additionally, the section on Sonic 1 says: "Did You Know? The small animals served as the basis for many characters in the comic books and cartoons that began in the 1990s."
The two "Silver Sonic" robots are both referred to as forms of Mecha Sonic. The Mecha Sonic from Sonic 3 is now Mecha Sonic Mk. II
Fang is referred to as half wolf, half jerboa. This isn't news to hardcore fans, but it might be the first time he's been called this in official English material? I'm not sure
Also, on the subject of Fang:
Tumblr media
Bean and Bark also get bios that line up with their depictions in the 30th Anniversary Special
Tumblr media
Vector's backstory in Knuckles' Chaotix is no longer a wonkily translated Blues Brothers joke about him being on a mission from God. Instead he's there investigating "tales of supernatural mysteries." Vector is no longer Christian
The Sonic 3D Blast Director's Cut romhack by original programmer Jon Burton gets a surprise shout out, carefully described as "a free download for PC copies of the game."
Sonic X-Treme is mentioned as being the source of Sonic's character model in Sonic's Schoolhouse - which, yes, has a page!
Sonic the Comic gets a shout out! In a trivia factoid explaining the various references in Metal Sonic's fight in Mania, Ian says "The midbattle setting and multiple copies is a clear nod to the Brotherhood of Metallix, a group of villains from the British magazine Sonic the Comic." (It's also mentioned indirectly a couple more times when referencing the fact that Sonic had multiple English language comic book series in the '90s.)
MODERN SONIC
The only commercially released Sonic game not even mentioned in the book is Sonic Pocket Adventure. Ian explained on a BumbleKast that there was some sort of rights issue there that lead to it being cut entirely. I guess there's some complications with SNK?
The fact that Charmy was originally a teenager and was retconned to be younger in Heroes is called out. However, Amy being aged up isn't. Maybe Classic Amy isn't considered younger anymore? This is just my interpretation, though, as the wording in Amy's bios here for Sonic CD and Sonic Adventure frames it more as her "growing up" in a character development sense. But don't go up to Ian saying he said Classic Amy is 12 now in this book, he said no such thing
On that subject, the book also skirts around the Classic/Modern divide in the current canon, as should probably be expected. However, the section on Sonic Adventure has a blurb pointing out that NPCs in the Japanese version acknowledge Little Planet. Many factoids such as this are playfully headed with Aaron Webber's motto, "Everything is Canon"
The profile for the modern Chaotix says "Together they take any case that pays - or touches their hearts (and they're big softies, so...)"
Eggman Nega's profile for Rush admits that there's "a fair bit of mystery and confusion" around him, but confirms that there's only supposed to be one Eggman Nega, Eggman's descendant from the future. When we see him in Rush he isn't supposed to be from the Sol Dimension, he's just traveled there from the future of Sonic's world
The six pages devoted to Sonic 06 mercifully do not mention that the game is bad
In the synopsis for Sonic Rivals 2, Ian describes Chao as "little water babies"
The section on Secret Rings mentions the bonus digital comic the Archie team did that was available from Target. You know, the one I skipped on this blog
The Secret Rings character bios joke about Sonic's friends appearing as different characters. "No, that's not Knuckles. Stop that."
As many have pointed out, Marine's bio says "She also may have mysterious water powers...?" According to Ian, this wording was literally him trying to bait an answer out of Sega once and for all during the review process. Except then they just okayed the unsure wording, and that's what made it into the book. So, not a confirmation, but... they're also not denying it? I guess?
Orbot's predecessor from Unleashed is confirmed as "SA-55." He's also displayed in a T-pose
Tumblr media
Okay. Sonic Chronicles! Y'all have been waiting for this. (Or at least you are if you haven't seen the dozens of other posts floating around about this section.) First off, the game is called non-canon up front. This is not news, Ian confirmed it was decanonized a while ago. Considering they literally cannot use those characters again without a lawsuit, this should not be surprising. (But more on that in a second.)
The presence of the SWAT Bots is specifically called out. The item that looks like Nicole's PDA form isn't, though, as the four pages devoted to Chronicles don't have enough room for a list of items
Tragically, the lack of an item listing also means that Little Boy, the most important Sonic character, is not in this book
There's also no Chao listing, so Ferox is absent
And, yes. Shade is here and has a little character bio. I've already written extensively about what this might or might not mean regarding the copyright battle here. Now that the book is actually in my hands, though, I can also see that Penders isn't listed under the extensive copyright and trademark information at the start. This might indicate that Sega doesn't view Ken's claim that Shade is literally Julie-Su and he therefore owns her as valid. However, again, this doesn't really change anything. The problem was always mostly that Ken would try and sue again if Shade appeared in new stories, and if he considers an encyclopedia like this fair use and won't sue, then neither side will have to prove anything in court
Tumblr media
Ian compares the coloration of the Mist Dragon from Black Knight to Dulcy, making Dulcy the only SatAM or Archie character I could find a direct namedrop of in the book
There isn't enough space for a full character gallery for the racing games, but the absurd inclusions like Wreck-It Ralph, Danica Patrick, Yogscast Simon, and the TF2 trio are listed
Factoid on the page for Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal: "An unlockable minicomic tells the prequel story of how Lyric captured Shadow. The writer for that story also wrote for the comic book series, the TV series, and the book you're reading now. Hi!"
Another thing that many people have already shared: Infinite is said to have been "consumed" by the Phantom Ruby. So that probably means he's presumed dead at the moment. Of course, multiple characters have survived being sealed in the Master Emerald over the years, so I wouldn't necessarily call this a death sentence
The rookie is said to have "parted ways with the heroes and disappeared back into obscurity" after the events of Forces
"Sonic Dash is the longest-running (ha - Sonic Joke) mobile venture."
The section on the Olympic Games series points out that Sticks appeared in one of these games alongside the regular Sonic cast, and also mentions her appearance in the gag manga and her Sonic Channel art. This is very transparently part of Ian's ongoing efforts to get Sticks into the IDW comics as a non-Boom character. Godspeed, sir
The section on Smash jokes about the old hoax about Sonic being unlockable via Cruel Melee
The Archie cover gallery in Sonic Mega Collection is mentioned
And, last but not least: Tangle and Whisper are present in the section on Speed Battle!!
Tumblr media
And there we have it! This is far from all of the information in this giant book, but this is what I thought was interesting enough to share here
While the book might not be the exhaustive deep dive of the Sonic mythos that some would probably want, it's a fun look back at the history of the games. And Ian's commentary definitely adds a lot here. He knows his stuff, but he also has a deep appreciation for all of it that bleeds through. Not just for the universally liked games like Mania and Adventure 2, but for unpopular characters like Cream and stories like the one in Black Knight, too. Should you shell out $35 - $80 to buy it? Eh, I dunno. That's up to you. But it's a nice book
Ooh ooh ooh, how about your version of Sonic for the powers thing?
You see, Sonic is fast, because if he doesn't keep ahead of his problems, he'll have to actually think about them, and then he'll have a crisis.
This is partially a fun opener joke and it's also not. I'll let you decide how much of each it is. In the meantime, I'm going to talk about what my reads of various canons inspire in me, and how that informs Worlds AU, a bit more than talking about Worlds AU itself.
So Sonic in the initial game canon, started out with an extremely simple conceit. You can see this mirrored across all of the non-Amy classic characters: Sonic runs, that's his thing; Tails flies, Knuckles punches, Eggman makes robots and also problems, which sort of condenses into one thing considering the role robots have in the classic games.
(that damn caterkiller has cost me SO many attempts at a chaos emerald...)
This sort of got to be a problem as the games advanced. In particular, the Sonic game I started on was Sonic Adventure 2, which pitted Sonic very prominently off of Shadow. At this point, character concepts are no longer about simple capabilities, and every other member of the cast has grown up. (even Amy... though not too much. sorry Amy). Tails is now building robots to go with how his flight allows him to reach unconventional 'tricky' routes; Knuckles is now more of an adventurer, explorer, and even a mystic given his history and relationship with the emeralds. This earthly pugilist sense grounds him in a more versatile skill-set.
Sonic... basically his gimmick was remaining true to the classic formula- he was still the one going fast, popping those shuttle loops, and tumbling through a chaotic universe. Yes, they absolutely polished this and put flourishes on it- now he's grinding rails and flipping on poles, this sense of street-smart parkour that carries him cheekily through any environment...
But he's played off Shadow, where the thing about Shadow, especially in the first game, is Shadow is a person who suppresses most of his personality for his context. Not in an inorganic or badly written sense, mind- but he outright says to Rouge at one point that it doesn't matter if anything he remembers is fake- in essence, that it's more real than he is, and a dead person's wish is more important than his life.
Shadow is a soldier, is an alien, is a bioweapon, is a teleporter and he shoots lasers. We are beyond the days of simple conceits; if he was conceived in the classic era, he'd have probably been either only a jet-skater or a teleporter, and that one conceit about how he moved through the world would've been through everything.
Sonic picks up the chaos control from Shadow- in direct reaction to Shadow- and this is commented on. In this scene, Sonic not only rejects Shadow's unhealthy obsession with context- that where he came from was everything- but mirrors it with an attitude that, frankly, to me, rings just as unbalanced- Sonic basically denies having a backstory whatsoever.
"What you see is what you get!" he says.
And that flew in the classic era. We didn't really have a consistent or strongly-drawn backstory over why Sonic was fast. Most continuities around that era point it to either an accident or a happenstance synergy with an outside force. But we didn't really need a story over why Tails can fly or why Knuckles had spurs on his fists.
But in the modern era... there's context. Many characters have superpowers. And more and more, there was a sense that those superpowers had context and history, whether the outright spelled, like Shadow (he was engineered to be capable of this; if you look at him, he has most of the abilities you'd expect of a boss fight in Resident Evil, minus the squelchy, infectious sorts and the Black Arms imply he could well have those and just not use them)
...or the simply alluded, such as Blaze's ominous comment that her flames are the reason she was always alone.
Sonic... clearly has powers. He's been reframed to keep up with he setting as it changes. But that exchange between him and Shadow- where Shadow looks at what Sonic is capable of, looks at him, and asks, verbatim, "what are you," and Sonic delivers a non-answer so naked and so certain that there's not really anything to say to that.
To this end, while I think it's highly intuitive that they picked the wind as the motif to spice Sonic up to- with its sense of freedom, and with its association with speed- I think there's also something about air in general that connects to Sonic.
Air is... omnipresent. It has an extremely complex seething system high overhead. Enormous paths and belts and spirals of wind curl over us all the time, pushing clouds the size of entire states around like it's nothing. When you look at the sky, it looks stationary. But wait, squint- it's actually moving. It's actually moving really fast.
One of my absolute favorite characterizing moments of Sonic is in Archie Comics, specifically the post-reboot series. To keep context minimal, Tails confides in Sonic that he's losing his memory of a certain incident that affected both of them, and he's worried; Sonic reassures him, typical hero big brother best friend, and gives him a big hug. The scene is warmly lit.
The very next panel is literally in the shadows, over Tails' shoulder and behind his back. And Sonic's expression is... troubled. Telling. We immediately understand from that alone he just lied, and has no ability to 'just remember for Tails'.
Sonic is not a vacuous person. He's not empty, he's not innocent, and he's certainly not just your same good nostalgic friend who never changed or got complicated so you don't have to reevaluate all of those things- the guy you can always count on, just like the sky is always there- but he sure pretends to be all of those things, and tries to keep the stormy weather as far away from other people as possible.
This is given another heroic-sounding-but-actually-concerning context in Sonic Unleashed, one of several games in which Sonic shows a maybe suspicious but profound aptitude for darkness where he guzzles and serves as a very powerful conduit for the energy of Dark Gaia, who is strongly connoted with rage, despair, denial, and other states considered bad for your health.
Sonic asks Chip- who he's just found out is Dark Gaia's counterpart- if it was his protection that kept him from losing his mind the entire time. Chip denies this, and states instead it's that "you never let the darkness win."
The thing is... anger and sadness are actually pretty important to feel. And it's actually not true that Sonic as a character doesn't feel anger- there's a few rather notable scenes in which he really loses his cool, some of them within Sonic Unleashed itself (he actually scares Eggman at the culmination of the Egg Dragoon fight) and in the game Sonic and the Secret Rings he actually achieves a super form powered by negative emotions- and that game also ends on a surprisingly melancholy note, where Shahra, when leaving Sonic, specifically gives him a bunch of tissues, a nod to how they met, and specifically "So you can cry as much as you need to."
Sonic is a good person. But Sonic is also... kind of a liar. He has this powerful connection to these highly destructive and dangerous entities- Dark Gaia, Chaos- and this is a thing he, pointedly, doesn't wonder about. And it's not arrogance, or an inability to consider the possibilities- in Sonic Colors he is very real with himself that he can't outrun a black hole, but only admits that once Tails is out of earshot on the one safe ride away from it- and while gearing up to try to do so anyway.
Wind is a contradictory thing. In the sky, we consider the possibility of ultimate freedom; flight and wings are often depicted as symbols of enormous power and efficacy because the very notion of being able to go wherever you want to captivates us.
On the other hand, though, a state of freefall is terrifying. In the unparalleled freedom of the sky, absolutely nothing can catch you if you fall.
(you know, except Tails, if you're fighting Eggman in Marble Garden- I'll leave)
We can talk about a bolt from the blue, a sudden storm or a just-as-sudden clear blue sky... the mechanisms of the air around us are often very hard to perceive for their superficial simplicity. And on sunny days when the wind lazes slowly through the leaves, it's hard to think of it as capable of hurricane forces.
I guess the note I want to leave this on is, it's pretty interesting how Sonic genuinely likes running, but he also tends to either outrun or fight anything that stresses him out- and "what he is" and "what he's capable of" is something he really doesn't like talking about even if he's happy to show or compete it.
HELLO, YES, I HAD AN IDEA FOR A CONCEPT AND HAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU, INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE BUT WITH THE BLUE DEVILS, LET ME EXPLAIN
(disclaimer I haven't watched Spider-Verse in a while)
(other disclaimer this will contain many many spoilers for Into The Spider-Verse so go watch it it's amazing)
Wachowski takes the place of Miles, which makes sense. Sonic has more specialized powers than the other blue devils (see unlimited power, time freezing, lightning), like Miles, and they both have cop dads who are literally amazing (I mean, look at the "that's a copy" scene and tell me it doesn't radiate Tom and Sonic energy).
Boom takes the place of Peter B purely because both of them radiate exhausted "I am completely done with this bullshit" energy
Modern and Classic I'm not completely sure. Classic radiates feral energy based on what I'm seeing from your characterization (I literally just joined this fandom because of the movie, I don't know a lot about the games, sue me), so maybe Porker or Penny would work for him (or maybe some combination of the two, they all radiate sort of unhinged feral energy). Modern taking the place of the original Peter would work because they both have extremely cocky energy (I don't know if you can tell I'm assigning who's who based on energy), but then again, the original Peter dies, so... Fuck.
There is the possibility of different versions of Tails and Knuckles or the Prickle Posse taking the place of some of the characters, so that's something fixed. But then again... Several Sonics being chaotic...
There are characters who I honestly... don't know. Aaron, for example. Do I have Rachel take his place, since she's Maddie's sister and therefore Wachowski's aunt? What about the other villains? Aunt May? Spiderman Noir? And Gwen is a WHOLE other can of worms, so I'm just not gonna get into her because shipping is a big can of worms
So basically the plot goes the same. This is a society where humans and Mobians coexist, Tom and Maddie adopted Sonic when he was a kid shortly after Longclaw's death (which had nothing to do with echidna this time), Wachowski either gets bit by a radioactive bug or he gets exposed to a Chaos Emerald, that gives him super speed, other shenaniganery, loads of Sonics, time limit to most of them dying, you get the picture. This is just a rough draft of a plot, so if you have any improvements, please tell me.
👀 this is almost beat for beat what I had in mind when thinking about this very crossover
As for what I had:
Classic was Porker, Amy was Gwen, Cream and Cheese were Penni and her robot, and Spider Noir was a version of Shadow
Aaron was actually Longclaw in this case? I didn’t have any details but the claws and stuff kinda matched
Tails and/or Knuckles took the place of Aunt May
And that’s about it :P
i was gonna send u an ask about sonic and realized that i literally know nothing about it, like i know most characters' names and that theres a story sometimes but idk how i managed to get to this point with zero information about one of the biggest franchises ever. so anyway tell me about sonic like, in general
omg. makes out with you platonically i love talking about things in general <3333
so! the first sonic game came out in 1991. there wasnt much plot, it was just little blue boy go fast beats the shit out of egg-shaped asshole who is imprisioning the little forest animals. sonic 2 came out in 1992 and it introduced super sonic, who is powered by the seven chaos emeralds - the chaos emeralds existed in sonic 1, but there were only six and they didn’t make super sonic happen. sonic 2 also introduced tails! if you wanna play a classic sonic game, sonic 2 is the one to go. it’s a really good game in general. then there was sonic 3 & knuckles, introducing knuckles (per the title) and the master emerald. the master emerald can neutralise the power of the chaos emeralds. something something echidna lore something something its too complicated!
there were more classic sonic titles after 3 but there was never a sonic 4 (technically there was but that wasnt a classic sonic game. long story). notably, sonic cd introduced amy rose (at the time known as rozy the rascal) and metal sonic - a robotic copy of sonic made by eggman.
then there was sonic adventure! while adventure is considered its own era of sonic games, you could also call it the start of the modern era, since they were the start of 3d sonic games. sonic adventure introduced the redesigns of sonic characters that are in use to this day, and it introduced one of the most iconic sonic villains in the form of perfect chaos. this was also when amy got her new name! sonic adventure 2 is considered one of the best sonic games ever, and i really like it! it introduced shadow, who - in the words of sonic boom eggman - is the second most popular character in the entire canon!! rouge the bat was introduced too, shes beloved, and theres just so much cool shit in sonic adventure 2 <333333333333333333 mwah mwah beloved
talk more about tikal in SA3!! i love her and im excited to see her have more concrete importance to stopping chaos! (im a bit fuzzy on the original plot but iirc, she was a magical background force that helped sonic stop chaos? correct me there if im wrong)
👀👀👀
Tikal is the daughter of Chief Pachacamac (I call him Patch for short) of the Knuckles Clan- an Echidna tribe that lived in the mystic ruins 4,000 years ago before they were mysteriously wiped out- the truth would later be uncovered in Sonic Adventure 1 that Tikal’s father took his role as Chief after his mother, the previous Chief, passed away and began his reign of terror. Tikal shows flashbacks to the heroes of Sonic Adventure 1 to give them an idea as to what happened to warn them of the future repeating itself.
If you go through all the flashbacks, there’s a lot of truly despicable stuff. One of the most important scenes/quotes that still sticks with me is this one:
Tumblr media
[image ID: Chief Pachacamac, a red Echidna in tribal garb, is ignoring his daughter Tikal- a peach Echidna- as she begs him not to attack. The subtitles of Tikal are “Attacking other countries, stealing and killing....” end /ID]
Other countries. The Knuckles clan was traveling, pillaging, and desecrating. But what were they doing in other countries?
Tumblr media
[image ID: the same scene as before, this time Tikal’s subtitles read “No one has the right to take their holy grounds.” end /ID]
Taking their holy grounds. To the Echidna’s, their holy ground is the Master Emerald shrine. My theory is that there are other Master Emerald shrines across the world, possibly one for each Chaos Emerald (this translates well seeing thag in Unleashed there are ‘Gaia’ temples that restore the emeralds, I believe they were originally meant to be shrines.) I believe Pachacamac was sending troops to steal valuable information and even the Chaos Emeralds themselves to gain power.
Part of what always made Tikal so interesting to me was her color scheme. She’s much lighter than any of the other Echidna’s we see and I wanted that to have some sort of significance. So, after MORE research, I ended up giving the Emeralds their own geological shrine for each of the continents introduced in Sonic Unleashed (the game that was made of scraps from the original Sonic Adventure 3 concepts). Angel Island in the United Federation became home to the shrine of the White Chaos Emerald- or the Unity Emerald, as it’s called in my notes.
White is the color of purity, innocence, harmony, and unity- which kind of fit with the continent being named the United Federation in modern day. The emerald was also titled this because of something Tikal says in Tails’ flashback:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image ID: Tikal is reciting an ancient mantra in front of the main temple in the Mystic Ruins. The subtitles read as follows: “The servers are the seven Chaos.” “Chaos is power... Power enriched by the heart.” “The controller is the one that unifies that Chaos.” end /ID]
“The controller is the one that unifies that Chaos.” This mantra was passed down to Tikal in secret for whatever reason, as there’s no mention of Pachacamac knowing it. So why was it so important for Tikal to never forget it?
Tumblr media
[image ID: concept art by mellow-elbow featuring Tikal in a super-form with a white aura striking a powerful pose with a look of determination. There is a bright light emanating from where her corneas should be. End /ID]
She was a Guardian.
In my Sonic Adventure 3 pitch, Guardians aren’t only limited to Echidna’s- there were once Guardians for each geological shrine. Where’d that idea come from? Well, you may have seen this image once or twice:
Tumblr media
[image ID: the mural from the Knuckles boss fight at Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 3 & Knuckles; the mural depicts a large entity in possession of a green emerald that may represent the Master Emerald. To the right of the mural is a blue figure surrounded by a yellow aura. There are 6 similar aura’s without figures behind the large entity. end /ID]
Everyone is always so focused on the blue figure surrounded by the yellow aura and scream and shout “Super Sonic! That’s Super Sonic!”... but everyone always seems to ignore the six other auras coming from behind the giant boss. To me, this mural depicts a spiky blue entity in a super form distracting the antagonist while 6 other super-formed individuals attack and defeat it.
My story goes that Pachacamac knew Tikal was a Guardian and wanted to use her powers to aid him in his warmongering ways. Before Pachacamac’s mother passed, she was hellbent on drilling peace and unity into Tikal to ensure it would never happen. Her efforts were fruitless, however, as Pachacamac began his reign of terror without Tikal and still succeeded.
When the time had come and he was ready to take the powers of the Chaos Emeralds for himself, Tikal stood in his way and begged him to leave the place be. Her cries fell on deaf ears, as Pachacamac ordered his men to stampede through Tikal and a herd of Chao- upsetting Chaos who used the negative energy to become Perfect Chaos and decimate a good portion of the Knuckles clan.
We don’t see exactly how Tikal stopped Chaos, we just know that she somehow sealed her spirit inside the master emerald with them. I wanted to introduce the powers of the Unity Emerald in SA3 and how she stopped Chaos, as it would be important info that would help the new Guardians defeat the main antagonist.
Tikal’s spirit would make a return in SA3 where she would help locate the new Guardian of Unity and teach the new Guardians how to defeat their enemy by showing how she defeated Chaos.
Anyways SEGA please hire me to make Sonic Adventure 3 😔🤲🏻💙
[SONIC ARTICLE] The 2010 Sonic Bible: EXPLAINED
Okay, I’ve seen some people curious asking about the Sonic Bible, and what it is, so let me give you a basic run-down: There exists FOUR Sonic Bibles.
This isn’t some sort of religious text featuring Sonic, instead, it has the bible name becuase it was written by a lot of different authors.
 These Sonic Bibles were created to explain the Sonic Series lore at the time they were created, and try to keep Sonic Media consistent at the time.
 The first one was made in the U.S., and in it, it gives us details like how Sonic was originally brown, and how he was friends with an scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor, and how an accident featuring a rotten egg and the Chaos Emeralds created Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
 The second one was made for the Sonic SatAM series, it was used for the cartoon and Archie Sonic as well. It gives lore details such as Mobotropolis, how Robotnik took over and it became Robotropolis, Sally, Antoine, Bunnie, etc.
 The third one was made in Japan, it featured some really unique backstory for Sonic, it talked about how an American woman created a story about a Blue Hedgehog named Sonic, inspired after her husband, who was a pilot who fought in World War 2. It was implied that Sonic was fiction within fiction, but at the same time, it seemed that he was also real for that world.
 “The story of a man who tirelessly sought to fly his plane at yet-unknown speeds.
 His hair, always standing up, led to him being called the “Hedgehog.”
 The nose art on the plane he flew depicted Sonic.
 He got married to an author of children’s literature, and she wrote a children’s story about a hedgehog that was based on him. His flight jacket still exists today.”
 The fourth one is the 2010 Sonic Bible, it was created around that time to make sure all Sonic Media would follow suit, the Sonic Movie follows it to a degree, IDW Sonic follows it, and the games follow it. And I’m going to give you LOTS of details about the 2010 Sonic Bible.
 The 2010 Sonic Bible was created to give multiple details about the Sonic Series, the character’s age, height, weight, etc. There’s also reference sheets for each character.
 The bible also features rules for the Sonic Series, saying what is and what isn’t considered canon in the Games’ universe. Keep in mind that these seem more focused on the Modern side of the series, but the Classic Series could also follow some of these rules:
 Hyper Forms and Super Emeralds:
Hyper Sonic won’t return, Takashi Iizuka himself said so in SXSW. Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles and Hyper Tails aren’t canon. These kind of details will only be referenced in material dedicated to tell the history of the Sonic series, such as ‘History of Sonic Books’.
(Material like this)
Super Tails and Super Knuckles:
 Even though Tails and Knuckles have went super in the past in the Mega Drive trilogy, they can’t tap into their super forms anymore. At most, it’ll be something like Sonic Heroes. Only male hedgehogs can achieve Super Forms.
Burning Blaze:
 Even though Burning Blaze could be considered a “Super” form, the Bible doesn’t believe so to be the case, since Blaze is the guardian of the Sol Emeralds. The form she obtains with them, Burning Blaze, is different from a Super Form.
There exists Two Worlds in the Sonic-verse:
Tumblr media
 This one Takashi Iizuka has made clear in a couple of interviews, and he has given this information to the fandom since 2010, around the release of Sonic Colors.
Basically, in the games’ universe, there exists Two Worlds or Planets:
 There is Planet Earth, this one is home to humans, and is where games like Sonic Unleashed, Shadow the Hedgehog and the Sonic Adventures happened.
And also there’s Sonic’s World,  places on it look totally alien to our world, inhabited by Anthros, crazy colours, concepts, rules etc. This planet is where games like Sonic Colours, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces happened.
Those two planets are 'connected' by a ‘gate’ of sorts, but while the two planets’ societies clearly interact with each other, they don’t always do. Some events may happen in one world, but they won’t have repercussions on the other. It seems that this gate is more of something exclusive or difficult to access.
[I am personally adopting as a headcanon the way the Sonic Movie explain this, they use Warp Rings]
Earth’s Moon:
The moon is still destoyed after the events of Sonic Adventure 2, but its’ orbit changed, we are looking at it from the other side.
Dr. Eggman Nega:
Tumblr media
Eggman Nega is Dr. Eggman’s descendant from the far future. He comes from Silver’s time, and is Silver’s rival.
[Yes, it seems that Dr. Eggman eventually had kids in some point in the future]
Sonic’s World and Earth exists within the same universe:
Ok, Sonic’s World and Earth are separated, but how? By dimensions? It doesn’t seem so. The bible says that they are two distinct planets that are in the same universe.
“Also, when making a game, you have to choose to either set it in Sonic's world (without people) or on "Earth" (with people.) Mobius is an official thing in Sonic's universe, but it is not the name of the world itself. It's actually the Sonic universe's equivalent to Mars.”
It seems that Sonic’s World and Earth inhabit the same solar system.
And okay, that’s all we know that the bible has to share right now. It certainly contains LOTS more details, but it’s an internal archive that people working for the Sonic Games consult to know about the lore.
This bible was probably in use for the Sonic Series as early as 2010, but some fans also think that it could have been used for Unleashed as well, since in that game, Sonic travels through the world, and doesn’t meet much anthros in his travels except for Tails and Amy.
Sonic Mania is really cool. Widescreen is a massive boon to classic sonic, and everything about the game just oozes passion. The level themes, the colors, the music, the gameplay. Everything works perfectly. The other classic sonic games are pretty good, but Sonic Mania modernizes the design philosophy just enough so that things feel less actively hostile while also feeling like a direct continuation of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It's a well paced game that feels. Well, faster. Than the modern boost games. For all of their flashy effects, if you're always going fast, it stops feeling fast. Sonic mania has thrilling moments of speed, careful moments of platforming, and if you're skilled enough, moments of both. Challenge and rest are built into the formula itself. Classic sonic in general has a bit of a learning curve, so it takes some getting used to, but once you do the levels are an absolute joy to play. Some advice for that is not focusing too much on going to any particular place, and letting the levels take you where they take you. If you let it lead the way, the game won't let you get lost for too long. That doesn't mean you shouldn't look for secrets, though. The levels are filled with branching paths and secrets, and they make the levels feel alive. The only 2d games I can think of that have the same feeling of exploration and openness are metroidvanias like hollow knight, which is impressive for a totally linear, level based 2d platformer.
I do have some criticisms. I think that the idea of getting all the chaos emeralds for the true ending is really cool, but if you beat the game without all of them, the gameplay kind of just. Encourages you to replay green hill zone act 1 to grind out the minigame until you get all the emeralds. The emerald minigame is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as the main gameplay. I wish that you could just play the minigame from the menu since, again, replaying half of the easiest part of the game over and over already makes it really easy to do that. OR, Ideally, they could do something to incentivize engaging with the game as a whole. Encourage the player to explore the parts of the level they didn't see, find secret areas, seeing all the things the game has to offer. Exploration kind of loses it's meaning in the postgame, which is a shame because the levels are so rich and full of diverging paths. I think that the coins you currently get from the blue sphere minigame could be better suited as rewards for exploration.
