It's October 2nd. On this day in 2007, the United Nations commemorated the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The UN had good reason to choose Gandhi’s birthday as the day to celebrate International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi was an Indian nationalist leader whose policy of peaceful demonstration led India from British colonial rule to independence. His commitment to India’s independence and his methods have been the cornerstone of civil and human rights initiatives all over the planet. Gandhi saw it as completely irrational to use violence to achieve peace, but rather, “Just means lead to just ends.” This is a lesson we can all take to heart.

Mahatma Gandhi is very famous in India as “Bapu” or “Rastrapita”. The full name of him is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was a great freedom fighter who led India as a leader of the nationalism against British rule. He was born on 2nd of October in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India.

He died on 30th of January in 1948. M.K. Gandhi was assassinated by the Hindu activist, Nathuram Godse, who was hanged later as a punishment by the government of India. He has been given another name by the Rabindranath Tagore as “Martyr of the Nation” since 1948.

राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी का जन्म 2 अक्टूबर 1869 को गुजरात के पोरबंदर में हुआ था। उनका पूरा नाम मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी है। गांधी जी के पिता का नाम करमचंद उत्तमचंद गांधी था और वो पोरबंदर के दीवान थे। महात्मा गांधी को प्यार से बापू भी कहते हैं। वह भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में सबसे प्रमुख व्यक्ति थे। गांधी जी ने सत्य और अहिंसा के रास्ते पर चलते हुए पूरे देश को 200 वर्षो की अंग्रेजों की गुलामी के बाद आजादी दिलावाई थी।

उनके कार्यों और विचारों ने देश को आजादी दिलाने में बड़ी भूमिका निभाई। यही वजह है कि भारत में स्वतंत्रता दिवस और गणतंत्र दिवस की तरह 2 अक्टूबर को भी राष्ट्रीय पर्व का दर्जा हासिल है। 24 व���्ष की उम्र में गांधी जी दक्षिण अफ्रीका गए थे। उन्होंने वहां कानून की पढ़ाई की थी। दक्षिण अफ्रीका से उनकी वापसी 1915 में हुई। फिर गांधी जी भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस में शामिल हुए और अपनी मेहनत के दम पर वह कुछ ही समय में कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष बन गए। गांधी जी ने न सिर्फ भारत की स्वतंत्रता के लिए प्रयास किया, बल्कि उन्होंने समाज में फैली अस्पृश्यता, जातिवाद, स्त्री अधीनता जैसी और भी कई बुराइयों का भी डटकर मुकाबला किया। इसके अलावा, उन्होंने गरीबों और जरूरतमंदों की मदद के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण प्रयास किए।

गांधी जी ने 8 अगस्त, 1942 में दूसरे विश्व युद्ध के दौरान अंग्रेजों को देश से भगाने के लिए भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन की शुरुआत की थी। इस आंदोलन के दौरान महात्मा गांधी ने 'करो या मरो' पर भाषण दिया था। 30 जनवरी 1948 को बिरला हाउस में शाम की प्रार्थना के समय नाथूराम गोडसे ने 78 वर्षीय महात्मा गांधी की गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी थी। महात्मा गांधी वीवीआईपी कल्चर और नेताओं को दी जाने वाली सुरक्षा के सख्त खिलाफ थे। यहां तक कि जब केंद्र सरकार ने उन पर जान के खतरे की आशंका जताते हुए सुरक्षा की आवश्यकता बताई थी, तब भी उन्होंने इनकार कर दिया था।

महात्मा गांधी की मृत्यु के बाद उनकी शव यात्रा में करीब 10 लाख लोग शामिल हुए। 15 लाख लोग शव यात्रा के रास्ते में खड़े हुए थे। उनकी शव यात्रा भारत के इतिहास में सबसे बड़ी शव यात्रा थी। लोग खंभों, पेड़ और घर की छतों पर चढ़कर बापू को एक नजर देखना चाहते थे।
