seal of the day: monk seal! they live in tropic climates and there are many subsets such as hawaiian monk seals, mediterranean monk seals, and caribbean monk seals. only around 1,700 monk seals remain due to over hunting since the middle ages :< they are super cute and i love their lil snouts <3

This is a Mediterranean Monk Seal, one of the most endangered seals int he world, and a rare and iconic animal of Portuguese waters. Despite the name , this species has colonies also in the Atlantic, with a small recovering population in the Madeira archipelago, where it is know as "lobo-marinho" - literally meaning sea wolf. After a successful rebound in the last decade or so, the current world population stands at around 600-700 individuals (of which 350-450 are mature animals). Each illustration in this series is commercially available for use in conservation, education and ecotourism projects.
