Happy #MerMay! First up, here’s my take on the Sirens . I imagined them being like monk seals . For several reasons:

1) they’re native to Greece,

2) they’re an endangered species that was hunted since ancient times (just like how Ody hunts them in “Different Beast”),

3) there’s this theory that maybe the Sirens were based monk seals,

4) just like the Sirens seals appear sweet and charming but can be quite dangerous.

This is a Mediterranean Monk Seal, one of the most endangered seals int he world, and a rare and iconic animal of Portuguese waters. Despite the name , this species has colonies also in the Atlantic, with a small recovering population in the Madeira archipelago, where it is know as "lobo-marinho" - literally meaning sea wolf. After a successful rebound in the last decade or so, the current world population stands at around 600-700 individuals (of which 350-450 are mature animals). Each illustration in this series is commercially available for use in conservation, education and ecotourism projects. seal of the day: monk seal! they live in tropic climates and there are many subsets such as hawaiian monk seals, mediterranean monk seals, and caribbean monk seals. only around 1,700 monk seals remain due to over hunting since the middle ages :< they are super cute and i love their lil snouts <3

Let's introduce this adorable pair for humpday!

Meet Kaiwi and her pup Lolii, a pair of Hawaiian monk seals enjoying the surf on Kaimana Beach near Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary . These endangered animals can be found almost nowhere else in the world, which is why we work so hard to study and protect them. This brilliant photo was a submission for the 2021 Earth Is Blue photo contest.
