Jordan Rakei || EDP Cool Jazz 2022

Dead Poets Music Headcanons:
Neil: mainly iconic women in pop (Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Lizzo) but he’ll listen to most other genres too, he’s not picky
Todd: a lot of chill indie rock, he loves finding poetic lyrics that he can analyze and connect to with steady, laid back beats. He knows a lot of obscure genres of music from various hyperfixated deep dives and likes finding small artists to support
Charlie: this boy is one of those pretentious “I was born in the wrong decade” assholes (affectionate) who exclusively listens to music pre-2000 and claims modern pop isn’t “real” music (Todd once caught him listening to Folklore at 3am and was sworn to secrecy)
Meeks: he prefers music with a distinctive beat like rap and some genres of EDM (I think he’d really like Moses Boyd), probably makes his own electro music that he posts anonymously on sound cloud
Pitts: he got his music taste from his parents, mainly country and dad rock. They’re those upper middle class midwesterners who act like they’re the epitome of country because they live in a semi-rural area (is that too niche?). Eventually he got into folk and folk punk too, which Todd introduced him to after seeing him get (affectionately) made fun of for his music taste
Knox: I’m sorry but he’s a pretentious indie kid, knowing obscure artists makes him feel special. He often gets into arguments with Charlie about what “real” music is. Todd tried talking to him about music after realizing they have similar interests but quickly realized this was a bad idea. Probably tried writing his own lyrics at some point but they were horribly cliche
Cameron: not super into music, mostly just listens to whatever is on the radio. He generally prefers slower, soulful songs though

(via Jazz Boom in the UK!)
“There’s no way to successfully quantify what makes a music scene take off, and the recent U.K. jazz movement is no exception; it wouldn’t be quite so magical if you could. However, it’s possible to observe — with a wide-lens view — some of the factors that made the soil so rich for growing something new”.

Happy Birthday Scottish actor Gary Lewis, born 30th November 1957.
Born and raised in Easterhouse, Glasgow Lewis seems an unlikely actor, he has had jobs as a roadsweeper and librarian, his brother, a teacher encouraged him to do more and he became in his own words a “voracious” reader, this pushed him into wanting to become an actor at the age of 32.
It was a chance meeting with fellow Scot, Peter Mullan that gave him his break, he joined the regular “in house” actors in Ken Loach films, starring with Mullan in My Name is Joe and Robert Carlyle in Carla’s song he was in good company to learn. He had a cracking role in Peter Mullan’s film Orphans, with one of my favourite lines, “She’s not heavy, she’s my mother”
Lewis won the best actor award for the part at the Gijón International Film Festival in 1998.I think most of you will remember Gary Lewis playing coal miner Jackie Elliot, father to the films title role Billy Elliot. I sometimes feel like I m repeating myself when noting the CV’s of these actors, Taggart, Rab C Nesbitt, Rebus were early shows for Lewis, while Stonemouth and In Plain Sight are more recent.
Then there is of course Outlander. Gary Lewis appeared in the first two seasons of the hit show, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon playing, Colum MacKenzie, laird of the MacKenzie family and Uncle to Jamie Fraser. Colum died in the season finale 2 finale Hail Mary. Of Outlander he says,
“The fan base is extremely passionate. It is strange because I live in Scotland and Outlander isn’t massive here to the extent it is in Australia, America and Canada. There are fans all over the world.”
The past few years have been busy for Gary, he managed to snap up an appearance in the final series of Still Game, as well the movie, The Vanishing, teaming up again with Peter Mullan and last weeks birthday boy Gerard Butler. He has also been in His Dark Materials, Rig 45, It’s a Sin, Vigil and series 3 of The Bay.
IMDB has Gary, along with Billy Boyd and Sharleen Spiteri to star in a film, set in Glasgow called I Feel Fine, however I think the project has stalled as it has been at the “announced” stage for several years now. Gary is also to play Roald Amundsen in the film North Pole: 90° North.
Gary ia also in a new Scottish feature film, Stella, about a German Jewish refugee who finds herself working in a stately Home in Dumfries and Galloway belonging to aristocratic supporters of fascist leader Oswald Mosely. The film, from what I can gather is not on general release yet, but has already won international Best Drama award at the Melech Tel-Aviv International Film Festival where it had its world premiere this month.

Greg Foat & Gigi Masin - Dolphin - Foat in a meditative mode on this collaboration with ambient master Masin, out today from Strut Records
Strut presents an exclusive new collaboration between UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and Venetian ambient / electronic maestro Gigi Masin on ‘Dolphin’.
Recorded remotely during 2021-2022 the album took shape in the form of mutual compositions, gradually developed and embellished online. Final recording sessions took place at the majestic Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight with Moses Boyd (drums), Tom Herbert (bass) and Siobhan Cosgrove (flute, clarinet) adding elements to several pieces. Tracks include the reflective, wistful single ‘Viento Calido’ and drifting ambient piece ‘Sabena’, a beautiful tribute to Gigi’s wife who sadly passed away during 2022.
Greg Foat has recorded prolifically in recent years for Athens Of The North, Jazzman and Strut including acclaimed albums Symphonie Pacifique (2020) and The Mage (2019). Best known for his 1986 ambient masterpiece Wind and as a member of Gaussian Curve, Gigi Masin has enjoyed a revival in recent years through his Calypso album on R&S’s Apollo label and renewed touring. Dolphin represents Greg and Gigi’s first landmark recording collaboration together. “I first heard Gigi’s album Wind in 2016,” remembers Greg. “I was living in Miami and I heard it playing one Summer evening. Since then, it has always been in my mind to be able to record together.”
Dolphin is mastered by Mark Ashfield at Cosmic Audio with newly commissioned artwork by Niul Foat. The LP comes as transparent vinyl in a thick card outer sleeve.
