Day Seventy-Six
Today I discovered that Mr. C is the most cautious driver ever. Usually, he gets to work way before I do, but this morning he was right in front of me, doing ten under the speed limit on the road up to the high school. Did I tease him for it as we were walking into the building? Yes.
I mean, it made me late for the holiday breakfast!
One of the excellent traditions at my school is that, on the last Thursday before winter vacation, we spend the time we'd ordinarily spend in PLC meetings having a delicious, celebratory meal. The advanced culinary class prepares it, our admins serve it, it's always great. My Cacophonous friends and I spent the hour chatting over coffee, quiche, stuffed french toast, and other delicious foods. We also got to vote in the department "holiday card" contest, and we'll see if social studies pulls off a win!
Also, Ms. A and I had an interesting chat about the fact that I almost never do something fluffy or non-academic before a vacation. Now, I don't care what anyone else does- it's up to each teacher to figure out what works best for them and their students- but my own thinking is that my students will only take my class seriously if I do. So I take it very, very seriously. I mean, I respond to their complaints with jokes about being a Grinch, but then I do my teaching.
My APGOV students finished a test, which went pretty well. My Global Studies students started a little group project. They have to find out the answers to 10-15 of the questions (depending on their group's size) on the Citizenship Test, and put together some form of presentation to share that information with their classmates. They'll finish the work tomorrow, share after we come back. It's good research and citation practice, it gets them thinking about their own government, and it's knowledge they'll need next year in American Studies (when they actually take the test for real).
And! I had a lot of students say they liked this assignment, and even one or two say they were glad I wasn't showing a movie.
So that's a win!
What else? Today's spirit theme was "storm vs warm," so students and staff were dressed in a hilarious mix of winter gear, tropical shirts, etc... And, yes, there were kids who committed to wearing shorts even though it was barely cracking double digits this morning. North country kids are immune to the cold, obviously.

Day Thirty-Eight
Today I went to the coffee shop and got a latte and a few pumpkin muffins before heading into work. I went to put a muffin on Mr. F's desk, and discovered that his floor hadn't been swept, so I swept it for him. As a school, we've been emphasizing acts of service, and this was going to be my secret one for the day, but he caught me in the act when he came in to grab a paper for the class he co-teaches with Ms. A during Block 1.
That's okay, though.
I swept his room, swept mine, did a bit of grading, and got ready to teach Global Studies. Students had to share the research they'd done yesterday, and then we read an article together about Jewish customs and traditions for major life events: births, weddings, funerals, that sort of thing. It went incredibly well in every section except the first one. I actually had to send two students to the office- something I rarely do- because they kept trying to derail everyone else. It's frustrating because it's not how I wanted my class to go, but I'll keep trying to do better in the future.
In APGOV, we watched the address President Biden gave last night about Israel and Ukraine, and talked about it for a good long while afterwards. Those are important conversations, the ones we have about ongoing issues, so I let them take as long as they need to. After that, we did some MCQ practice and I had them start a little research assignment about the 2024 presidential candidates. Each student was randomly assigned a candidate to learn about, and they'll share their findings on Tuesday. Many of them will be old enough to vote in the primary, and all of them will be old enough to vote in the general, so it's a really practical assignment.
After school, I did a quick bit of grading, set up my lessons for Monday, and headed home for a few hours. I came back in the evening to check tickets at the football game. It was rainy and cold, so the crowd wasn't huge, but the student section was rocking. Kids wear all kinds of costumes in our school colors, they bring confetti poppers, they throw baby powder into the air, it's all fun.
I only stayed until halftime because of the rain. I took home some concession stand food for dinner, though! Deliciousness.
