Cool wooden panels pressed hard lines into the child's face. Every once in a while, his fingernails would scratch haphazardly at the wooden door, yanking at a metal handle that stayed firmly shut and only rattled in the darkness like an angry growl.

A whimper would rip through his throat, and Evan would call out for Mikey. Eventually, Evan stopped asking Mikey to open the door, instead just begging Mike to answer him, to say something so he would know that his Mikey– his protector– was there.

Yelping, Ev wasted no time in latching himself around Mikey’s leg.

“Oh, Ev…” Mikey’s hands hovered uncertainly over the child’s shoulders. “...Did you have another nightmare?”

Evan’s only response was a whine as he nodded into Mikey’s jeans. His shaking hands snaked upward, latching onto the folds of Mikey’s hoodie, and Mike’s hands looped around the child’s sides. Picking the child up, Mike set Ev gently against his hip.

“Good. Magnus and I would like Rafael and Max to be in the same city. Not now. Not immediately. But one day,” Alec smiled to himself. “It would be good for all of you to be together.”

“All of us?” David echoed.

“All of you. And then the children.”

David coughed. “Did my papa put you up to this?”

Alec laughed. “Just a thought, David.”
