I keep renaming this woman it's not my fault I'll settle for one eventually. Hannelore/Hanna everyone! Finding herself in a bit of a situation at the start of the story. Not much of a situation. But a bit.

»It’s going to be alright, Elli. We’ll just stay here for a few days and then move in with some other nice ladies.«

Hanna wondered if it counted as a lie if she wished with all her heart it was true. It might be, right? Maybe everything would go perfectly smoothly, she would find a little job that would let her hide from the general public, and then some roommates who would tolerate a four-year-old.

Said four-year-old, sitting on the camp bed in a corner of the walls of carefully stacked bone, looked at her with wide eyes, and Hanna could tell she hadn’t convinced her daughter. She smiled at Muriel, something she didn’t have to fake. »Go to sleep, Elli. I’ll be here, alright?«

If Muriel was half as tired as she was after their little adventure in coming here, back into Hanna’s hometown that Muriel had never seen before, into this dark ossuary that wasn’t as abandoned as Hanna had hoped, she should have an easy time doing that.

Hanna didn’t know what she would do if Muriel would refuse to be put to bed. She loved her daughter more than anything left in the world, but she definitely didn’t have the nerve for it at the moment.

To her relief, Muriel curled up under the blanket. »Okay, Mum. Good night.«

»Good night.«

After placing the obligatory kiss on Muriel’s cheek and forehead - always both, or she would complain - Hanna sat alone in the dark at the foot of the bed, illuminated only by the little lantern on the desk that had been as unexpected as the bed itself. There was also a ratty couch, although it once must have been fancy, and books and notes scattered about.

She was too tired to think about who might have brought them here of all places, and what would happen if they would find them here. She hadn’t even had the capacity to think of an alternative. She would simply keep watch over Muriel, hide when they, whoever they were, returned, and assess whether they were a real threat or just some other unfortunate soul who hadn’t been able to find a better roof to live under.

She was so tired. Muriel finally was asleep, and she could feel herself losing the struggle of keeping her eyes open.

The lamp shone softly into the dark.

Maybe it was going to be alright.
