Whenever I mention rest days, I seem to get many of the same questions in my DMs... 🛏️ "How many rest days do you take a week"⠀ 🏃🏻 "How many times a week do your workout" ⠀ At the moment I'm aiming to be in the gym 3 x a week & to then incorporate 3 runs as well (2 x steady 5-6 miles & 1 x sprinterval session) • But occasionally (and especially if I've had a race on a Sunday) I'll need to drop a run because I need to take an extra rest day to recover. Which is A OK by me! My current plan has 3 full body days programmed in that are designed to really challenge me (can I just say descending hip thrust sets are the DEVIL 👿).⠀ ⠀ So I have to have a day in between each session to recover, which is where my running comes in for active recovery. I then take one day completely off each week whenever my body needs it most. But rest for me isn't sitting all Netflix & chill. I like to run, walk, stretch ... and I have been known to swim once upon a dream too • Active recovery helps increase blood flow, reduce soreness and speed up muscle repair making it ideal for those that are pushing their limits on the gym floor! So when it comes to these here are a few of my do's and don'ts: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗼 rest when you need to and work with your body not against it ... it can be hard to differentiate when you need to rest and when you need to get on with it so embrace some trial & error. 2️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 train the same muscle groups back-to-back ... the day AFTER your session is when your body is repairing and growing so don't disrupt that process and alternate. 3️⃣ 𝗗𝗼 plan ahead ... try to schedule your week and make workouts and recovery non-negotiable like any other appointment in your diary. On a day like today where I go on a three hour hilly hike then spend two hours doing #BodyPower exercises I must replenish my body with the ideal nutrients.
