Stop wishing for your dream body and start creating it! Don’t get me wrong - I love the power of positivity (one of my favourite listens is Paul McKenna’s Positivity Podcast) … but I think there’s a dangerous trend right now of believing that we can get whatever we want by simply asking the universe for it and then sitting back and waiting for it to deliver. And this might be an unpopular opinion, but … 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. If you want to be a morning person you need to set your alarm earlier and start getting up. If you want to be healthier you need to stop filling up on fast food and take outs and start focusing on incorporating more fresh fruit and veggies. And if you want to carve the body of your dreams you need to move your body. I waited so long for the body of my dreams and only when I invested in myself by getting a coach and educating myself by reading specific journals based around my goals (no more butt tastic YouTube videos 🙄 £ did I start to see it coming through. Things that go through my mind in between sets… Was that 12 or 13 reps? Where’s the increment weight gone? Do I need a mid-set toilet break? What shall I have for breakfast? Has the pre-workout kicked in yet? Maybe I should have a bagel & a shake? Should I skip the increment weight & just go up the stack? Ah there’s the pre-workout. Notice how non of my thoughts involve anyone other than me or my workout. It’s easy to feel as though people are staring a you in the gym and ‘judging’ you. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁. Truth be told, we’re too wrapped up in our own workouts to notice what anyone else is doing … I bailed on two sets of squats yesterday morning (landing on my ass in the squat rack both times) and nobody battered an eye lid. Whenever I mention rest days, I seem to get many of the same questions in my DMs... 🛏️ "How many rest days do you take a week"⠀ 🏃🏻 "How many times a week do your workout" ⠀ At the moment I'm aiming to be in the gym 3 x a week & to then incorporate 3 runs as well (2 x steady 5-6 miles & 1 x sprinterval session) • But occasionally (and especially if I've had a race on a Sunday) I'll need to drop a run because I need to take an extra rest day to recover. Which is A OK by me! My current plan has 3 full body days programmed in that are designed to really challenge me (can I just say descending hip thrust sets are the DEVIL 👿).⠀ ⠀ So I have to have a day in between each session to recover, which is where my running comes in for active recovery. I then take one day completely off each week whenever my body needs it most. But rest for me isn't sitting all Netflix & chill. I like to run, walk, stretch ... and I have been known to swim once upon a dream too • Active recovery helps increase blood flow, reduce soreness and speed up muscle repair making it ideal for those that are pushing their limits on the gym floor! So when it comes to these here are a few of my do's and don'ts: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗼 rest when you need to and work with your body not against it ... it can be hard to differentiate when you need to rest and when you need to get on with it so embrace some trial & error. 2️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 train the same muscle groups back-to-back ... the day AFTER your session is when your body is repairing and growing so don't disrupt that process and alternate. 3️⃣ 𝗗𝗼 plan ahead ... try to schedule your week and make workouts and recovery non-negotiable like any other appointment in your diary. There’s no formula to calculate the amount of rest you need. 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐍 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐂𝐊-𝐈𝐍 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅? We’ve all heard of the SMART acronym • The idea that goals need to be SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC & TIME-BOUND. But how many of us have set ourselves a SMART goal in January and reflected upon it in December and wondered what went wrong? 🙋🏻‍♀️ Guilty! Last year I set myself the goal of running 1000 miles. It was SMART enough, but then after inputting the target into Strava I did nothing with it. I just left it on the shelf and waited for it to achieve itself. When it comes to health and fitness, long-term goals are defined as those that you would like to achieve in a 6-12 month period, these can then be broken down into ‘milestone’ goals (aka medium-term goals) that are bite-sized targets that you can work towards over a 1-3 month period (if your long-term goals are 12-month based I would say your medium-term goals should be quarterly ones) and then these can be split further into weekly or even daily actions to help you achieve them. By breaking down your long-term goals into more manageable ‘chunks’ they become less daunting and it increases their relevancy because the time scales become more current. Checking in with yourself allows you to see how much progress you have made towards your goal and how you can get back on track if things haven't gone to plan • My running goal for this year is 520-miles instead BUT having checked in with myself yesterday I can see I'm about 12-miles behind already...winter running is not my friend but the end of the Cross Country season is upon us along with the lighter evenings which should get me back on track! This is me on holiday in 2018. In the run-up to this holiday, I tried 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 to lose weight before we jetted off. ✅ A 1200 Calorie Diet ✅ 'Skinny' Teas ✅ Low Carb ✅ Meal Replacement Shakes I just wanted the weight gone. As quickly as possible. I put my weight gain down to the fact that I was working away and slightly out of routine. What I didn't realise back then was that by always using a quick fix to get myself "beach body ready", I had got myself into a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. AKA the root cause of my weight gain. You see - I would crash diet for 3 or 4-weeks before going away and then revert to eating normally as soon as I stepped foot in the airport. In order to lose weight and keep it off, I needed to break the cycle. So I started to make small, sustainable changes to my lifestyle. I moved my body more in ways that felt good. I nourished my body from the inside out. I added more structure to my lifestyle. I invested in a coach to push me. This year when I go away I won't feel the need to 'shred' for the sunbed. Because I feel strong and confident all year round. And I'm guessing some of you out there will be able to relate to this story. Maybe you've dieted a few times in the past, finding that you're OK for a while but then completely lose your way and (after a period of total rebellion) you start over. Again. And again. I hear you, I've been there! Progress isn't a destination, it's a journey. And there's no quick fix. Looking back, I don’t even recognise the girl on the left anymore. The girl on the left was obsessed with losing weight, having a bikini bridge and a thigh gap • Her lunches HAD to be syn free (because that’s what all the girls in the office did) and she would have a Friday breakfast binge every single week • She tried every diet ‘pill’ that promised to speed up her metabolism, masked her hunger pangs with energy drinks and skipped meals to bank calories for the weekend. That was a decade ago and it took a long time to undo all those years of damage that I did - not only to my physical state, but my mental state too. These days I no longer focus on what I need less of, but what I need more of … moving more instead of weighing less and filling my mind with knowledge as opposed to removing vital nutrients from my diet! January has been EPIC and we still have 7-days to go! So far this year I’ve racked up almost 26-miles towards my run target, spent a week in the cutest cottage in Northumberland, worn my hiking boots for about half the month and got my own fitness back on track after a busy December. And my clients are smashing it too… 📉 they’re all dropping the lbs they’ve committed to! 📈 they’re moving more … running, swimming, cycling, walking! 🍛 they’re eating the foods they love and incorporating new meals into their diets every week! 🏋🏻‍♀️ they’re hitting PBs and challenging themselves every session! This maybe an unpopular opinion … … but you can have goals to look or live a certain way and not be doing it from a place of hate for your body. Going to the gym isn’t bowing to a societal pressure to look a certain way. Tracking your meals so that you make sure you fuel your body correctly is not disordered eating. Not a single person I work with has said they’re “driven” by the emotional dislike for their body. They’re driven by wanting to improve their physical health. They’re driven by wanting to feel more comfortable in their clothes. They’re driven by wanting to feel more confident in their performance in other areas of their lives. The body positive movement started out as just that, a positive movement • And whilst there are still many out there that use it to push for constructive change in the society for representation, there are more that use it to shame those that want / need to enforce some change in their lives. I agree that there needs to be representation. I agree that no one needs to change who they are to fit a mould. But I believe that everyone has a choice and if they want to make some some changes to their lifestyle, whatever their reason, they should. Repeat after me; EXERCISE IS NOT A PUNISHMENT. It is not an obligation. It’s a lifestyle. One that can be shaped and moulded however you want it to be. You don’t need spend hours in the gym, or be hitting 10000 steps every day as a penance for what you ate. You should be moving your body in a way that feels good and right for you. 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔 🍷 One of the very first things I teach my clients is that calories are not something that need to be earned, they are something that our bodies NEED to LIVE and BREATHE. But, for a long time, I almost feared food • I worked in a toxic office environment where calories were earned not a necessity, where points certainly didn’t mean prizes and where it was socially acceptable to take anything that suppressed your appetite/ helped you ‘burn’ or simply pee a little more so that come weight day you were a little lighter. I never used to think about the connection between training and nutrition and would wonder why I felt so light headed in the gym when I was eating the 1200 everyone (apart from those I should have been listening to) said I should. And then it clicked; “𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖-𝙩𝙤-𝙗 𝙞𝙛 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙤 𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙩, 𝙨𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩?” So instead of trying to eat less all the time, I started … 🍗 Focusing on consuming whole foods instead of processed ones 🍎 Incorporating my 5-a-day as a non-negotiable 🍣 Looking at my macro nutrient intake instead of just my calories 🥛 Planning my meals around a protein source and not relying on supplements Nailing your nutrition takes time, but I promise it’s totally worth it because when it falls into place you will never worry about a meal again!
