Speakers of non-English languages of the UK and Ireland wanted!!
Since it’s World Mother Language Day today (February the 21st), I’m thinking of doing a series of posts on the native non-English languages of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some information and short interviews.
For this, I am looking for both native speakers/signers and learners (with or without parentage/heritage of the language in question) of the following languages:
- Scottish Gaelic
- Irish
- Welsh
- Any sign language of the United Kingdom or Ireland (e.g. BSL)
- Any other minority language indigenous to the United Kingdom or Ireland. By this I mean primarily spoken only within the UK or Ireland as a minority, or spoken very little elsewhere. For example: Cornish, Manx, Shelta, or Anglo-Romani, not languages like Polish or Bengali that are minority within the UK but have a significant speaker base elsewhere. (I am aware that I am fishing for some of these *cough* Cornish *cough*...but you never know!)
- Any language or variety that you speak that you feel is linguistically / culturally distinct from Standard English that you would like to inform more people about. For example: Shetlandic, Scots, Ulster Scots.
I don’t have anything finalised yet, but if you would be wiling to speak to me about some text-based interviews for the sake of qualitative and informative tumblr posts, please send me a message!
(NB: if I have used any names of languages that are not preferred, tell me and I will change them. I don’t know a lot about the non-Celtic and non-Germanic languages here, which is part of my reason for wanting to make this series of posts in the first place.)
Please reblog so more people see this!

Considering the post is pinned to the top of my blog, I'm sure you guys are aware I have a witchy shop that I run with my friends. It's called Ofmistandmagick on Etsy! Anyway, one of my friends in our shop is having difficulty finding a place to live and will be facing eviction and they have an infant at home. He and his husband are trying to secure a place to live before they are evicted but don't have the funds to get a motel or an airbnb at the moment. Our shop will be adding a donation listing labeled "Emergency Housing Fund" if you wish to purchase some readings from them. You can also donate directly to their gofundme or their cashapp. Every donation they receive, my shop will give in return a Crystal chip bracelet for free as a thank you. We will also be running a sale of 25% off with a new set of meditation beads gods for the Norse Gods. Hopefully, I'll be able to add a new set of Celtic and Kemetic meditation beads as well. Please consider donating and be on the lookout for the listing that will be available by the end of this week on 4/19/24. Thank you all and here's a preview of one of the meditation beads for Ullr.

Back in Khaenri’ah, there was the idea of “true” names. Full names, names subtracted from titles, names in the old language, whatever you may wish to call it.
Sharing such things were symbols of trust and intimacy- a true name is the essence of a person: their life, their ideals. You may control them with such a name.
Such things used to be sacred.
As for me… well, there is no use for upholding the ideals of a culture long destroyed. I supply my name with reckless abandon; there’s no reason for me to care. They have already taken everything worth taking from me.
“My name is Dainsleif. I suppose you have some business with me?”
Dainsleif.
Dainsleif.
Dainsleif-
“Dáinsleif!”
“Hm?” The man shakes his head, blinking in the strong daylight of Sumeru. He grunts, raising a gloved hand to shield his eyes from the light as he looks down at the person at his side.
The Traveler is standing there, arms crossed as they squint up at him. Paimon had wandered off to clean up the campfire the group had used, blowing away soot with her little cheeks puffed out.
“My apologies, Traveler.” Dain apologizes, wiping the dirt off of his gloves as he sets the shovel they had been using to the side. “Is there something you require of me?”
“A̶͢͜e҉̵͟t́͜h̶͝͡e̶͟͏ŗ̛̕.͠͝҉͏”  “́͞L̀͢u͡͝͝m̷̶͘͠i̸̵͞n̛̛̕͢͠e̶̢̧͢͜.͡͏̷
“...What?” The knight blinks, not quite believing what he had heard.
“My true name.” The Traveler repeats, their gaze stubborn yet filled with a kind of tender determination Dain had not seen from them in such intensity. “You already know it.”
“...Yes, I do.” Dain admits, not quite meeting the Traveler’s golden eyes. “Your sibling used it occasionally when they talked about you.” He tries to ignore the ache in his chest at that thought- that they had trusted him so dearly to give him a name of such importance to them and the person they loved so dearly. He sighs, shaking himself out of his memories. “But I have never called you that out of respect for your identity as the Traveler and our… unique relationship.” Dain sighs, unfolding his arms. “Why do you bring it up now?”
“You can call me that.” The Traveler gives him a small smile, golden eyes reflecting the sun above. “My name.”
And they don’t need to say it, but they do anyway-
“I trust you.” A pause. “...Mostly.”
Something both grows and cracks in Dainsleif’s heart at that moment.
He had long abandoned such practices of his culture for a simplistic, convenient life, and in some ways, so had the Traveler, by using an alias or simply going by “the Traveler”. To give the true name of a star like them could be more than dangerous in the wrong hands, and to Dain’s knowledge, Paimon was the only one who used the Traveler’s true name, and that was when they were alone. Yet here they were, trusting him with this of their own free will.
A small smile- one of the few genuine ones to be found on Dain’s face- slowly creeps up his lips, brushing ever so slightly against the edges of his mask.
He nods, his voice soft.
“...Of course, “A̶͢͜e҉̵͟t́͜h̶͝͡e̶͟͏ŗ̛̕.͠͝҉͏”  “́͞L̀͢u͡͝͝m̷̶͘͠i̸̵͞n̛̛̕͢͠e̢͢͜.”
Their silent moment of companionship is broken by Paimon whining about getting soot all over her clothes. The Traveler laughs, going over to dust her off with their scarf bouncing along every footstep they took.
Dáinsleif just sighs, shaking his head, but he still wears a small smile.
Perhaps some things were still worth savoring.

With the current walrus/fairy controversy on this site, I decided to ask my family their opinions. My mum and my brother, the more new-age hippie types, said a walrus would be more surprising. My dad and sister, who consider themselves more 'grounded,' said a fairy would surprise them more. With this very small sample size that means nothing, we're about 50/50 for people who aren't Tumblrbrained.
That is not the point of this post.
My brother's girlfriend said, and I quote, "neither." As in, she would not be at all surprised to find either a fairy or a walrus knocking on her door. I think we should all put aside our differences and talk about whatever the fuck is going on there for a little bit.

I knew I'd be mildly irritated by people talking about the irish lyrics purely because ye do not know what this language is actually called
The language native to the island of Ireland is called Gaeilge or Irish
[Minor rant under the cut]
It's not Celtic. It's not Gaelic. It's not Galic.
Celtic is a language family - Gàdhligh (Scotland) and Manx (Isle of Man) are in the same Goidelic branch as Gaelige. Cymraeg (Wales) and Brezhoneg (Brittany) are in the Brittonic branch.
These languages are related but they are not the same.
Gaelic is an adjective used to describe things that come from Ireland/are distinctly Irish. For example, Gaelic Games are our national sports - Hurling, Camogie, Gaelic Football (and handball but nobody cares about that)
But ya just please take 10 seconds to figure out what this language is actually called its not difficult
(also jesus christ stop with the fairy comparisons we have a very much living and thriving culture we are neither dead nor folkloric)

In light of series 5 finally airing, I thought I'd finally share something I've been meaning to since uhhh *checks watch* about a year ago
It's my Ghosts OC! Warning for very rough pen sketches lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I named her Mhairi (pronounced varry) after my late auntie. I'll put her story under the cut.
I made her because I wanted a character who has the culture and roots of my homeplace, and I've always loved the kingdom of Northumbria; how we had our own identity and language seperate from rest of the UK before the Romans invaded. I was struck with inspiration last night to revive her and do a couple of doodles because of that one promo image of Robin sitting under a tree looking sad 😭.
Mhairi is a Northumbrian Celt who was captured by the Romans after they invaded her village during the time they came up north to build Hadrian's Wall (so around the 110s-20s AD). They took her down south, but she managed to escape. While trying to fend for herself in the woods, she ate some poison berries and died. She stayed with her body for about a week before finally deciding to venture further into her environment. There she bumped into Robin, who didn't have a great grasp on English yet, since there wasn't any permanent settlement on the land yet. He taught her about being a ghost while she taught him northumbrian English. They both had to learn old, middle, and modern English from new villages and eventually the occupants of Button House together. They're good friends and talk philosophy when they get a chance. NOT romantic though!!! Just wanna make that clear lol. I also like to think she'd be nicer than the other ghosts to Humphrey (which I think is a common throughline between literally everyone's oc's in this fandom bdbdj).

Related to my tags on the Irish American reblog, how long have bastardized "Celtic" crosses been neo-Nazi symbols? I wasn't aware of this stupid use until I was an adult and my father was equally unaware until I learned about it, and in our Celtic (American) Pride we often used Celtic cross imagery in decor and accessories. Granted these usually did resemble actually woven/knotted crosses (which by no means meant they were authentic. At best a few came from local Celtic Pride fests–which as I said in those tags was plagued by Confederate and Nazi imagery), but most of them came from like JoAnn's or Michael's or Walmart whenever Saint Paddy's Day rolled around. That said, the woven pattern of a Celtic cross is a bitch to draw especially when you have yet to nurture or be nurtured in any art skills, so when my borderline-Gothic ass would doodle graveyards in my school notebooks I would often doodle simplified Celtic crosses as grave markers, which unfortunately just meant a simple cross with a simple circle in it, unfortunately reminiscent of the neo-Nazi symbol.
Me and my family were staunchly Indiana liberals (to be fair that wasn't that shocking in our democrat enclave city) and have only become more leftist as time goes on, so those who knew me well would know I didn't mean anything by it, but like I have to wonder/worry that those who didn't know me well (like most of my classmates. I was pretty lonely in high school) or people who would briefly visit my home or come across us while we were wearing Celtic pins that day or something came away with the wrong impression. I'm especially dismayed at the thought that the kids I knew to be actual neo-Nazis might thought I was one of them
For the record I left school in like twenty eleven and had been doodling graveyards for years and wearing Celtic imagery for even longer. I can't really find out when the "Celtic" cross became a dogwhistle
#Celtic cross#Celtic Pride#tbh when going to those fairs it was under the pretense of being (mostly) Scottish#it was all a farce my dad leaned into because he was adopted by a Scots-Appalachian man with a Scottish name going back to an actual clan#BUT i was never supposed to know he wasn't my biological grandfather (even tho it was pretty damned obvious)#so my dad played heavily on Scottish pride#that said we had Irish ancestry from other branches of the family so we indulged in Irish pride and imagery too#plus we just felt the knotted crosses were pretty and cool looking#anyway i/my dad did end up having more Irish genetics than Scottish pending our DNA tests#the Scottish is there but the Irish is more. especially in me because my bio maternal grandfather was also Irish Appalachian#(i have some Ulster Scots too but less so. which is more surprising because it's more common for 'Irish' Appalachians to be Ulster instead)#somewhat-Gothic because i usually aligned with goths in personality and depression but rarely wore black#i usually wore boys graphic tees with stupid sayings and memes on them#at least until the obscenely stupid dress code went into affect (search my blog for that if you're interested lol it's a saga)#i was lumped in with the goths for lack of better placement anyway but arguably i was more boy scene#my high school didn't really have cliques or anything strictly categorical so like goths would hang with 'preps' and such anyway#but i did have more commonality with Goths and most of my few friends were#anyway I'm losing the thread#rambling in the tags
