Ineffable husbands x reader (platonic)! They've been noticing how much they've been on their phone lately, always smiling and giggling. Azira quickly assumes they're seeing someone and being the match maker he is at heart, he and Crowley manage to get the phone but the only thing on it is that Y/N is in a Facebook group about pretending to be ants in an ant colony (it's an actual thing).

A/n- This is so oddly specific and I love it! Kind of reminds me of when I was obsessed with Mystic Messenger which is just being in fake relationships with anime boys and girls... yeah I didn't have many friends in a high school LOL. Also, tell me why I am researching information about ants for a fanfiction!

Summary- The reader has been giggling at their phone non-stop recently Crowly is insistent that the reader has a significant other so he steals their phone.

Y/n is entranced by their phone having no idea about their surroundings.

Crowley throws his hands up in the air, "Okay that is the tenth time they giggled in five minutes!"

Aziraphale smiles at Crowley's outburst, "I am sure you are overexaggerating dear."

Crowley leans closer to Y/n to get a better look at their phone, "They have to be seeing someone!"

"Crowley, shh you are talking about Y/n as if they are not even there!" Aziraphale chastises him.

Crowley waves his hand dismissively, "They can't hear me they have no idea what's happening around them. Watch," he proceeds to clap directly in front of Y/n's face who does not even blink.

Aziraphale narrows his eyes, "That is actually quite impressive. I wonder what has Y/n so engrossed."

Crowley rolls his eyes, "Angel, I am telling you there is only one explanation they are seeing someone!"

"If they are they will tell us when they are ready," he places a comforting hand on Crowley's shoulder.

"Why would they be hiding it from us? We are their best friends we need to make sure we give their significant other a talking-to about the rules and what happens if they hurt Y/n! It can not wait," he cracks his knuckles.

"My dear maybe that's why their not telling you, " Aziraphale pats the shoulder his hand was already on and Crowley simply hisses in response.

Y/n abruptly stands, "I am really craving some hot cocoa, this weather is frigid. You want some?" Y/n asks the pair.

"I'd love some, thank you," Aziraphale smiles.

Crowley simply nods in response but as soon as Y/n leaves the room he jumps to the couch to where Y/n was just sitting.

"Ha! They left their phone," he smiles quickly typing the password.

"I am not even going to ask why you have their password memorized," Aziraphale frowns and Crowley looks up at him with a devilish grin.

Crowley's face quickly turns from devious to utter shock so much so that it concerns Aziraphale.

"What is that look is Y/n some sort of trouble?" He asks his parent mode instantly activated.

"They are fine physically not sure mentally though...," Crowley says full of pure confusion.

"What is it?" Aziraphale slides right up into Crowley's side.

"So much for you judging me for invading their privacy," he smirks at Aziraphale who shoots back a glare.

New messages appear from several different people one reads *foraging food for our queen* another reads *adding more tunnels for our queen* the last one they read says *Found a humongous picnic for our queen! Ants assemble!*

"What on God's earth is this!" Aziraphale surprisingly shouts and it just so happens that Y/n had just walked in with the three hot cocoas.

Y/n's face sours at them on her phone and accidentally drops one of the cups which breaks on impact with the floor.

Y/n quickly apologizes but then stops, "You know what I am not sorry that is a total invasion of my privacy! Crowley I expect this behavior from you but not you Aziraphale!""

Aziraphale quickly gets up, "I am so sorry Y/n! Let me clean the glass I don't want you to get hurt."

"Oh, so you don't want me to get hurt but hurting my feelings is fair game," Y/n glares.

"Y/n, be nice to the angel. It was my idea he got pulled in because of your weird group chat called Y/n's Ant Hill," Crowley says trying to calm them.

Y/n crosses their arms, embarrassment written clearly on their face, "You saw that? You still shouldn't have read the messages."

"We were concerned that you had a significant other and weren't sharing it. I assumed they were some heathen instead I see you roleplaying as an ant! It is far beyond anything any demon or angel could conjure in their mind." Crowley says with shock but also a weird sense of pride in humans.

Y/n tries to defend themself, "If you must know I am not any ant... I am their queen."

Aziraphale smiles and tries to hold back a laugh but at this point, Crowley is dying of laughter.

Y/n looks extremely bitter and Aziraphale tries to brighten their mood, "At least you hold a position of power."

Y/n's eyebrows furrow in anger, "Try it! I swear it is fun! If you don't like it you can make fun of me for it as long as you want if you do like it you can never say a bad word about it again!"

"You know I am always down for a little wager," Crowley smirks.

Y/n smiles, "Good! You Aziraphale?"

"It does sound very strange... but I will do anything for your forgiveness of your breach of privacy," Aziraphale says full of sorrow.

Y/n clasps their hands together, "Perfect!"

They spend the next hour huddled around Y/n's phone.

*I demand you find me the biggest feast an ant has ever feasted on* Crowley types.

Y/n tries to tug the phone away, "Stop they will overthrow me!"

"I'd like to see them try," Crowley wickedly smiles.

"Nooo," Y/n whines.

"For goodness sake why is my best friend and the love of my life the most insane begins I have ever met." Aziraphale sighs.

Safe to say Crowley gets Y/n overthrown and they have to start a whole new colony over together and Aziraphale can now never get them off the phone.

Five Comfort Characters, Five Tags ~

Cyno (Genshin Impact). To absolutely no one's surprise. Cyno started as a character who I pursued purely for aesthetic reasons (general soft spot for white haired boys, the Egyptian theme tickled the history nerd in me, and he wears my favorite color palette) to much much more. Due to timing I could have never predicted, he became the medium through which I escaped my pain in a time of severe grief, and walked me through all of its stages to a place of acceptance and healing. Cyno took me by storm and has been my strongest muse for half a year now, completely monopolizing my brain and my blog. On top of that, he gives me an excuse to tap into my horrible sense of humor that was there long before he came by.

Saruhiko Fushimi (K Project). The OG muse of this blog and still a muse I hold dear (as I should, considering I had his face permanently carved into my skin three times now). Saruhiko is possibly the muse I relate to the most for reasons I do not wish to cutie-fy. Looking at him is a bit like peering into my younger self, with all the troubles of those years (some of which come back to haunt me again on occasion). He is a muse full of flaws that I love to portray for the crude and toxic things that they are, with no romanticization or excuses for it.

Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII). Not a character I relate to by any stretch of the imagination, Sephiroth may come as a surprise at first. But it is thanks to my fascination with him that I am here, both online and in-real life. Were it not for FFVII, I would probably have never found the drive to learn to speak English, a choice which in itself led me to the hobby of online writing, and roleplaying, and even to move to the UK. Not everyone can tell the story of how a videogame changed their life so drastically, and it's safe to say I owe it all to this guy. As well as...

Red XIII (Final Fantasy VII). My favorite playable character in the game and of my favorite Final Fantasy race altogether, Red XIII and I grew up with a strong hatred for our father that was entirely misconstrued. It would be many years later that I would come to this realization, when I too came to terms that the man my mother always told me about was one painted by her own bias and resentment and did not reflect the truth. Unfortunately, just like for Nanaki, it was far too late for me to find closure, as he'd already passed away by then. For this reason I hold this cub close to my heart.

ZEN (Mystic Messenger). Since I've mentioned my mother, here comes the cherry on top (and what a beautiful cherry he is!). The story behind Zen's route resonated deeply with me, a survivor of narcissistic abuse at the hands of their own mother. Through Zen's eyes, I recognized my own deep-rooted anxiety and difficult family issues. Whenever those feelings come back to haunt me, I know I can find comfort in writing him to ease my own pain and fears. Zen was my main muse in the days of Facebook Messenger roleplay, for a good 2 and a half years, and I'm happy to say he's here to stay.

If Cataclysm peddled wares, the man would hush it by glance and strike of his own inventory. Listen well, he might edify with the grain of a sophist, and had he fancied it capable of high ideas; The firmament could tear seven times and resunder eight, the Earth could roar with hankering ululations for want and slake of its abyssal imago, bovines could make stellar victualage of the horizon, and he would still ready his clay come morning and archive them come evening. And the same could be declared of the oarsman, the bricklayer, the potter, the bard. These were external phenomena which An-Kala held in conscious operation, paddocked in so stringent a mental capture and concord of understanding, and if by some measure there was no reconciliation between thought and what was observed in its discourse, then one would be found, whether by writer or he who reads, at the wedged end of his reed stylus, in the scribed face of his clay. What force, as though with the vengeance of the southern wind to shill our boats, could imperil the firm construct of understanding which had thus weathered the tempests of obstruction? 

Yet this, This eluded him. 

     This, which smacked An-Kala by the stem of his brain and beguiled him about the eyes, apprised him that his construct had instead the constitution of a house of thin reeds pirouetting on the scuds of a gorging marsh. He beholds it and knows it to be true, for he had always held certainty that he suffered no disease of perception nor any eccentricity of thought, and yet he could find himself amongst these orchards of intellect no reconciliation; had he been privy to the dense and fibrous neural dance of action potential and the membranes to which they were received, and of the synaptic trains that seemed in the crux of that moment to betray him, then he should liken this bloody communion between the reception of senses and the vagaries of reason to the legendary confusion of tongues between Enmerkar and Aratta’s Lord, with the amendment that their messenger had died with his body still dangling from the horse. 

     But there, there. An-Kala held not the pride of a metaphysician, but that of a scribe. His mind may bear its torment, but his hands shall suffer no loss. 

The mirth-bearing beast and its proboscis of carnelian continued to spit its ill-tidings, like unfurling bitter maledictions from its smarmy marsupial pocket of curses, a pungent zoonosis of nonsense which strove to raven An-Kala, the subsequent inheritor their scrying tongues. What bitter portent would the rainbowed creature spit next? The scribe's brow furrows; he is too cold to sweat. Would it claim that his instrument was not a stylus but a wooden caterpillar, his clay not made of earth but the pits of a rotting date? The human mind could handle much in its service, but fathom more; yet parse it less; and the adaptability of language can only be so moulded from the cast of necessity, or corralled by purpose on the counters of the tongues it graces. The language of the land was logographic, and, much like a crossbow being used to fell a cedar tree, or a spoon of felt being used to harvest fish, An-Kala was left to phonographs for concepts and terms for which he held no appropriate cognate or mere helm of understanding. But on his honor as a court scribe would he find some way to do it, even if it felt like he was playing a song composed for a trumpet on a lyre. 

‘Car’? ‘Vehide’?   Was a ‘face-book’ some sort of death mask? 

     Had An-Kala the audacity to lift his hand from his work he would scratch at his head, which was beginning to feel like its internal contrivances were melding into a veritable ooze of cuneiform cacography that the impish little harlequin would fashion into some linguistic apparatus for his king’s entertainment. 

     But it seems the beast would hardly need it.

     “Hohoh! What utter nonsense!” Gilgamesh held the jocular organism by firm grip, his thumb impressing upon the prismatic fibrous net about its motley cranium as if the act could rouse him further entertainment. The spill of its lachrymal glands gratify him. “Your inanity redeems you, mongrel. Let your soul gladden at the fact it has bestowed the King such laughter. You may continue until its novelty wears!”

Silently, yet with doubtless progression, did the growing pile of clay tablets approximate of his throne dais rise to commendable number. Since the chanticleer-cry of the dawn’s Imdugud had the King of Heroes and the privileged members of his court been the recipient of the harlequin’s damfool ballads, jejune sonnets, lurid poems, such trifling regales, and now, a fatuous tragedy redolent of folly and diaphanous woe. A graceful caryatid of resplendent verisimilitude amidst the short anthology of jests, however, raises a decorous voice amongst the palais. “Your Majesty, if I may.” Siduri, the paragon of forbearance, held her head in respectful inclination, yet her tone, as though forged by the edges of the years to adamantine quality, arose with even, dutiful cadence. “When I suggested a tribute to smooth over tensions, this is not exactly what I had in mind.” 

“And you shall spare it none. It would be a peerless honor even had I granted her a common stone.” The King declares, noble and peerless in his gesticulation even with a clown in his grip. “But they will receive no such privilege. The words of a fool are an offering to which they are equal.” He snaps his fingers. “Put it with the rest.” 

     The depredation of squalls alarmed in An-Kala’s consciousness would betray no expression to their vociferous churnings, for there was an indelible pride to the curvature of his spine, and a pleasure about his clay-kissed fingertips. His Majesty need not shout any words to the scribe; the King demanded perfection, and he would receive it. There is a pulchritude in An-Kala’s work above that he might discover as an oarsman, a bricklayer, a potter, a bard, in the fruits of his labor and the records that would outlast him. The King’s unimpeachable words, his thunderous elocutions, his imperial didactics, his every utterance, were all far heavier than any tablet or stone upon which they are carved. And An-Kala reveled, as might an oarsman in braving tumultuous tide, or a bard in brightening the people’s souls, with the honor of conveying His word.

And a court scribe does not question what he writes; he simply does. But when An-Kala looks down at his clay, it is almost as if he can parse his worn expression on its jester-cursed surface. 

             ���— An-Kala makes a mental note that he, himself, was suffering great cranial agony. 

     Amongst the throng thrashing about his mental chassis of prudence, the scribe could hear the efficient rustle of palace attendants as they knelt by his side to acquire another folly-laden tome, the soft placement of their tender blocks near the lick of fire to harden. “Of course, your Majesty,” Comes a servant's response. “Right away, your Majesty.” The jester’s mouth begins to open. Another folly will be borne. There will be no balm to An-Kala's disquiet.

       “I am certain Lady Ishtar and her temple will enjoy such an...abundant offering.”

As a preteen, I could devor an entire novel in one night. Entering fictional worlds became a hobby of mine. I’d spend entire study hall periods browsing book after book, searching for the perfect world to get lost in. Eventually, when my small school library had little left to offer me, I turned to the internet for guidance. In 2013 the place to be for a young book lover was Tumblr. The blogging website any teen internet dweller could be found on. It was amazing. I was able to read people’s reviews, fanfictions, see their fanart and fancasts. People would curate playlists specifically for reading a certain book, timing each song to play at the perfect moment in the book. My timeline was a masterpiece of aesethically type-writer style quotes from John Green novels, images of books perfectly placed on a table with tea and toast. It was my favorite place to be, until Tumblr had given so much that the books became boring. I found more enjoyment in the aftermath, seeing what others did with some creativity and a shared admiration for a story and it’s characters. 

This fallout between the novels and I, set my preteen self on an expidition to find a new hobby. To better understand the pipeline I fall into, I should explain the inerworkings of subcultures on the internet in the 2010s. Everyone (at this time) has Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Kik, Ask.fm, and maybe Twitter. These are the apps/sites you use to interact with friends from school and family members. These are the “normie” sites. If you have any hobby or interest that deviates from what a typical middle schooler considers cool, you most definitely have a burner account on each app. Popular subcultures worth hiding from normies in 2013 were: Anime/Otaku, Staning/Fangirling, Furries, Bookworms and more. It was common to make an account dedicated to one of these subcultures, where you can remain anonymous by using a nickname and never showing your face. Instead of friending people you know in real life, you can accumulate mutuals by following anyone who shares your interests. This allows an individual the space to indulge in their favorite outcast activities without the scrutiny of their peers. Anyone who occupies space in one subculture tends to learn a bit about the others over time, whereas normies may go years without learning of some things. This makes it easy for one’s interests to shift. 

Thirteen year old me grew bored of hobbies rather quickly, and pretty soon novels and the bookworms of Tumblr no longer satiated my hunger for something immersive. Through my ventures on Tumblr, I was particularly intrigued by video games. Gottschall calls attention to this phenomenon I took part in: “video games–and other digital entertainments–are also on the rise, drawing audiences away from traditional story. The gaming industry is now much bigger than the book industry” (178). He’s called me out entirely, I am one of the children who abandoned her books for video games. I believe it is incredibly human to want to try out the new, exciting media that is just a few clicks or taps away. The mounds of books will remain in my bedroom, and I will return to them from time to time but for now I’ve accepted the fate of being a new media consumer. As eager as I was, my family’s income did not allow for a gaming console or proper gaming laptop unless I did some serious begging around Christmas time. There is a reading portion inturrpited by moments in which the reader makes a choice in how the story will play out. However, the difference between otome games and adventure books isn’t just their opposing physical formats. In otome games, the player has the advantage of visuals. Where illustrations could be included in any book, these drawings move. The scenery, usually a blurred out realistic background sets a certain aesthetic charm that is characteristically otome. The animated characters are able to emote in response to your choices. The experience is far more immersive.

One game in particular that I became obsessed with is Mystic Messenger. The entire app was designed to make the lines between reality and fantasy blur. After an introduction scene, It mimics the looks of any other social media app. It deviates from the traditional otome style game of animated characters infront of a text box. Instead, your in a group chat with the characters. It mimics these parts of our daily lives to create a world that is new and exciting.

I can’t ignore the fact that thirteen year old me may have also been searching for friendships in these fantasy worlds. It’s acceptable to find momentairy solace in these spaces, but it must only be in moments. Relying on these games for social fufillment is tempting but unhealthy. I appreciate and adore otome games for their ability to bring me into the fantasy world, but I always remember my home in reality. 

Which, is also were I was able to take on the role of becoming a new media producer. Being a creature of habit, my otome gaming hobby quickly became boring once I exhausted the free versions of these games. Seeking another free hobby, I discovered the app WEBTOON.
