I dont get to use procreate very often so I do think there are some things I could have done better but overall I am happy with how this came out.

this is dumb but do you also sometimes feel like Yves is trying to (maybe subconsciously?) visually emulate Sulli? like some of the pictures she posts are way too sulli-esque lol

I think that's definitely possible. Sulli was a trendsetter, and her impact is long lasting - at the same time, Sulli is also not the only one who does these 'Sulli-esque' photos; many of both Yves' and Sulli's photos hark back to the Cyworld style of selfies and aesthetic, which I suppose could be analagous to the early days tumblr aesthetic of pre 2013, or even myspace (notably, Cyworld predates myspace).

Alongside Yves and Sulli, you might notice that Hyuna also, from time to time, posts photos in a similar vein to this aesthetic (though also has her unique style) - and a lot of older generation idols will often have predebut or simply older pictures in this style too. But I think there's something that is common between them, whether intentional by Yves or not.

The taxonomy of Sly Cooper: Part 2

So, the first entry of this series was pretty well-received. Here's part two. This time we'll be focusing of the villains of the first Sly-game, The Fiendish FIve.

Raleigh was actually kinda difficult to pin down, as he is pretty much just a generic non-descript frog. Looking at a list of amphibians in the British Isles didn't exactly narrow it down, as the UK also has several non-native species of frogs with varying degrees of naturalization. Eventually I settled with the species that I thought best matched his colouration, the marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus)

At up to 4 inches long, the marsh frog is the largest and one of the most widespread frog-species native to Europe, although it isn't native to the UK, being introduced in the 1930's. Within the UK it is primarily found in south-eastern England. Researchers are still undecided as to wether or not it poses a threat to the local ecosystem.

True to their name, marsh frogs are generally found in marsh regions, being more tolerant of saltwater and pollution than other frog-species. Like most frogs they primarily feed on insects and other invertebrates, but thanks to their size they can also prey on smaller fish, birds, and rodents.

In contrast, Muggshot was fairly easy to figure out. He is unsurspirisngly an american bulldog, particularly of what is called the "bully"-type. Domestic breeds generally aren't my forté, but I'll do my best.

American bulldogs were originally an offshoot of the english bulldog, which were brought to America following the colonization, where they were primarily used as livestock guardians and catch dogs. The "bully"-type ( also known as the "Johnson" or "Classic"-type) was created by dog-breeder John D. Johnson in the mid 19th-century, by crossbreeding standard american bulldogs with an english bulldog, resulting in a line of dogs that are bigger, more muscular, and with a more pronounced underbite than the standard variation, all very reminiscent of Muggshot.

Primarily used as guard dogs nowadays, american bulldogs are considered to be a loyal and courageous breed with strong protective insitncts. They riquire rigourous training and exercise in order to stay healthy (and make sure they don't skip leg-day, like a certain someone)

Mz. Ruby also proved to be alittle bit tricky. I had originally pinned her as an american crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) given that she lives in Haiti, where the only native crocodillian is the american crocodile. The Sly Cooper Wiki refers to her as an american alligator (Alligator missisipiensis), but there is nothing in-game that confirms this. However, i then realized that she is probably Cajun given her accent. The Cajun culture originates in Louisiana, where the only crocodilians are american alligators, so that kinda seals the deal.

You wouldn't really know that just by looking at her though. Alligators are distinquished by having short, broad snouts with an overbite. If we look at Mz. Ruby, while her her snout is kinda broad, she sure as hell doesn't have an overbite.

Petty taxonomy bullshit aside, american alligators are found throughout the swamps, rivers, and lakes of the south-eastern United States. They are the apex predators of their environment, and eat pretty much any animal they can get their jaws on. Although their range overlaps with that of the american crocodile in Florida, the two species generally don't compete over resources.

American alligators are some of the most cold-resistant reptiles, being able to survive temperatures as low as 40 degrees fahrenheit or 7 degrees celsius. Should the water they live in freeze over they can go into a kind of suspended animation, by digging a hole in the ice to breathe through, whilst lowering their metabolism and bodily functions to a minimum. Not quite the breaking of the laws of life and death that Mz. Ruby has got going on, but still pretty cool.

Moving unto the Panda King, and yeah... There is no getting around the fact that he is clearly meant to be a giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). I briefly toyed with the idea of him being one of the many extinct species of Ailuropoda, but that was too far-fetched.

Giant pandas are of course renowned for their cute appearance, strict bamboo diet, and for being the face of animal conservation. Though infamously endangered by habitat-loss in their native mountain range, they are considered less endangered nowadays, being given the IUCN-status of Vulnerable.

And no, pandas aren't an evolutionary dead-end or a lost cause in terms of conservation, and don't deserve to go extinct. Anyone who tells you otherwise likely doesn't understand ecology.

The giant panda is notable for having an extra long sesamoid bone on its front paws, in additon to its five fingers. While not a true finger, this bone practically works like an opposable thumb, which comes in handy when handling bamboo shoots (though it'll take some time before they master the art of pyrotechnics)

Finally we have Clockwerk, the immortal arch-nemesis of the Cooper Clan. His in-game description doesn't give us much to work with, other than that he is an owl of some kind. We do know that he apparently had an orange plumage before becoming a cyborg. Due to his large size and having a base in Russia, some people have identified him as a eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), which I can defintiely see.

I however subscribe to the theory that Clokcwerk was originally from Ancient Egypt, and thus like to think that he's a pharaoh eagle-owl (Bubo ascalaphus).

With a wingspan of about 3 feet, the pharaoh eagle-owl is actually one of the smaller members of its genus. It is found throughout Northern Africa along with parts of the Arabian Peninsula. It likes to nest around cliffs and river valleys, where it primarily feeds on rodents, reptiles, and other birds, but occasionally takes on prey as large as hares and desert foxes.

The ancient egyptians associated the owls with wisdom and knowledge, but also regarded them as symbols of mourning and death. Owls were sometimes mummified alongside humans, as it was believed that their night-vision would help guide the deceased through the darkness of the underworld.

what casual viewers take away from ATLA

My partner finally watched ATLA with me, and I kept mum about my Zutara shipping until the very end because I wanted to see his reaction.

When Zuko saved Katara from being crushed by rocks, he said, “I think they’re gonna get together” (because we’re soulmates 😭❤️).

Then, when Zuko and Mai hugged during the finale, he was legitimately mad. He went off about how the narrative set them up to be terrible for each other and how them getting together made no sense, and how Mai was mean while the whole point of Zuko’s redemption was that he was not. Please know that he didn’t remember Mai’s name and was just calling her “the bored girl.”

And when the KA happened during the finale, he was really confused. (“She clearly didn’t like Aang back!”) But mostly he was still mad about Mai.ko, because he felt it undermined Zuko’s redemption—a redemption he had called since s1, as the narrative made clear even to casual viewers that there was more to Zuko than being a bad guy. This was pretty interesting to me, because at the time KA made me angrier than MZ, because Katara was my priority. But my partner was frustrated that the show had gone to such lengths to show us that Zuko and Mai were wrong for each other and then ended with them together. It’s lazy writing; it’s insulting to your viewers.

I love hearing reactions of the ATLA finale from casual viewers (at least those that I respect lol). It’s one thing for us big fans and shippers to analyze the scenes and storylines but it’s another entirely to see what a casual viewer notices, someone who’ll forget the names of the main characters in a couple weeks but won’t forget how the ending left them unsatisfied, even if they don’t have the words like meta writers do to explain why the canon ships don’t work. What casual viewers do have are understandings of the implicit themes of the show, the major characterizations, the big plot moments—you can’t let the casual viewer be surprised—you can’t merely rely on major fans to pan the show for crumbs, like what one would have to do for any evidence that Katara returned Aang’s feelings. To my partner, Mai was "the bored girl"—that's what stuck out to him from her characterization. But Zuko is anything but indifferent—he is defined by his passion, whether we're talking about s1 Zuko searching for the Avatar or s3 Zuko joining Team Avatar.

Meanwhile, Zuko and Katara’s relationship arc fits the big themes of the show (e.g., harmony and balance between things that seem to be opposites but have much more in common than we realize) so their relationship development is not surprising. It makes narrative sense—it’s natural. It would have made sense to the casual viewer.

"That's a good eye ya got there, pardner." Mio lowers her aegisalt bow. The pig-like creature she's just shot releases a death-rattle. "Thank you, Mx…?" The cyan novakid swings away from the twisty palm they're been leaning against, watching Mio take down the yellow and purple mottled beast. "Mister. Oganesson. But y'all can call me Ogan." Mio inclines her head and throws the bow over her shoulders.

"If you're going to use some cheesy chat up line on me," Mio says as she walks towards the slain beast, "I'm afraid you're swimming up to the wrong beach." "Naw, ain't nothing like that," Ogan says as he follows her. "Was gonna ask if you wanted a hand with the corpse? There's a settlement two clicks widdershins of here. They got a great butcher. Anything you don't want'll be distributed to the widows and orphans." Mio brushes aside a trailing vine, letting the jungle condensation drip onto her skin. "What if I don't want it professionally butchered?" "You gonna eat that whole thing by yourself?" Ogan asks with a huff of laughter. "I was going to leave it for scavengers." "You'd let good meat go to waste when there's kiddies that could use it?" Ogan's head is tipped in a way that, if he had a face, Mio thinks he would be sneering at her. "Some Protector you are."

Mio tries not to let his comment rattle her, keeps her face serene. She's not wearing the uniform, the manipulator is in her pack and not on display. She's supposed to be on vacation, by Salt and Sand! Marooned at the edge of civilisation by a well-meaning crew to relax and get back to nature.

"The lives of wild creatures are just as precious as those of sapient ones. And you seem to have me at a disadvantage." Mio's hand sneaks towards the pistol at her belt. "How did you know I was a Protector?" "Well, for one, there ain't no civilised being that hasn't heard of you, Mz Mio. And for two, I got told to find you, and I always get my guy." Mio spins, her pistol trained on his brand. Ogan puts up his hand in a placating gesture. "Y'all can keep that liddle equaliser in its holster, I don't mean you no harm." Mio lets the pistol droop. "Then what can I do for you, Mr Oganesson?" "My boss, fella called Cap'n Noble, sent me. He wants a word with you about Asra Nox."

I began to reread Scum Villain and began to think about the similarities between the Xin Mo and Flower of Everlasting Hatred. Like both of them heighten the negative feelings, except the latter is a bit more one track. Both contribute to the darkening of the person in possession of it, except for Xin Mo it has the added imagery of being the driving force of the OG stallion novel. It attempts to perpetuate the old plotlines, attempting to transform Bing-mei to Bing-ge,,,,,both are present as the symbol of a higher power manipulating the narrative (Hua Binan/The System), albeit for different reasons. "Forced to become evil due to freaky magical influence" is a trope that has incredible potential for angst™.

2ha was my first danmei and it is also the book that is more suited to my tastes, so while I did end up enjoying SVSSS for what it is, my favorite parts were definitely the ones where I could see the direct parallels with 2ha, especially the parallels between Bingmei/Bingge and MZS/TXJ. My absolute favourite bit in the whole book was when the PIDW Bingge created the rift and ended up in the SVSSS timeline.

With that said, I always connected Xin Mo with Bugui, but your parallel also makes so much sense from the POV of both Xin Mo and the 🌺 being a corrupting magical influence. Xin Mo seems to have both a higher state of consciousness than either Bugui or the 🌺, and an agenda that is independent of its master. All spiritual weapons in 2ha seem to have some level of sentience, but they don't seem to have a will of their own and they certainly do not have an agenda independent of their wielder. Bugui was a destructive entity because Mo Ran himself was destructive. The 🌺, though, did not have sentience or will of its own. It was just a cancer. Xin Mo may have been corrupting, but it also gave its wielder power. The 🌺 did not, it just twisted and corroded. Also, the main difference for me here is the element of choice. Luo Binghe chose to take up Xin Mo, knowing the risks but doing it anyway because it would yield him unimaginable power. Mo Ran had no choice.

The corrupting magical artefact that Xin Mo reminds me more of is the One Ring from The Lord of the Rings. It is, in essence, sentient and has its own agenda. It magnifies your inherent power to a massive degree, but it also eats away at you until you are nothing but a shell of your former self. Both of them are parasitic, but at least for a while there, there is an element of symbiosis (for comparison, the 🌺 in 2ha is definitely parasitic with no benefit to the host, and Bugui is symbiotic, with no negative side-effects at all).

What is interesting to me about Xin Mo is that Bingge actually mastered this sword and found a way to control it instead of the other way around, even if this is a constant work in progress and the sword still seems to be looking for ways to chip away at his defences (hence his constant need to channel its negative energy through sex). Bingmei never did and the sword very much infected his mind in a way that it never did with Bingge. I think that this is (partly) because Bingmei left the Abyss sooner than Bingge and thus never fully mastered his demonic powers, but also because Bingmei's goals were different to Bingge's. Bingmei's big dream is to be a househusband for his Shizun and live in domestic bliss, while Bingge wants to rule the known universe. The latter is much more in line with the demonic sword's own nature, which craves and thrives on chaos, which is why I think Xin Mo was an actual asset to Bingge and an active factor in his own destruction for Bingmei.

Hua Binan and the System, though, go into different categories for me. Hua Binan is the actual villain of the narrative, with a personality and a goal that is influenced by in-universe factors. On the other hand, I view the System in the same way as I view all AI. It's a computer program that does what its code tells it to, but it is not actually intelligent, nor does it have any independent design. It is dumb and easily fooled, but also inflexible and unable to realise when its actions could lead to its own destruction (such as Shen Qingqiu dying being a viable option to this "game", which would absolutely lead to Luo Binghe spiralling and self-destructing and taking this whole universe, including the System, out in the process).

Anyway, there is SO MUCH I want to talk about concerning the parallels between Bingge and TXJ (and their respective shizuns' reactions to meeting their blackened selves) but this is getting loooooong as it is, so I am going to stop here for the time being 😭
