Where else can you view critically endangered rhinos against a backdrop of downtown skyscrapers? Nairobi National Park is one of the smallest national parks in Africa; and yet it supports an astonishing variety and abundance of game. In fact, it is one of the most successful rhino sanctuaries in Kenya and one of only a few places left in the world where visitors are virtually guaranteed a sighting of the critically endangered eastern black rhino. The greatest threat to wildlife right now is infrastructure and human development. As economic development, changes in grassland composition, logging, and agriculture degrade and destroy wildlife habitats, rhino populations are declining. Those remaining rhinos live in fragmented, isolated areas and are prone to inbreeding, as healthy genetic mixing is more difficult among smaller groups. Also, having a large population confined to one protected area can lead to the allele effect where breeding is depressed due to lack of resources and disease can spread rapidly through these highly-concentrated populations. The increase in human populations also puts more pressure on rhino habitats as well, shrinking the living space for rhinos and increasing the likelihood of contact with humansβoften with fatal results. The Nairobi National Park is so close to the city of Nairobi that it is not uncommon to see animals with the skyscrapers of the city in the background. In an overpopulated world, this national park is a good example of close and respectful coexistence between humans and animals.
