best prank my nan ever pulled was getting my granddad a pack of 100 cigarettes (if you've never smoked, you can buy 100 packs which is 5 packets of 20 encased in a plastic wrap, or a box)

she very carefully unstuck the outer covering and slid out all the packets

then she equally carefully undid the individual plastic wraps on the packets from the bottom (again, if you've never smoked, there is one of those little pull tabs at the top to take the top part off, but the bottom is folded over and stuck)

doing this without ripping the plastic is very difficult

she slid out all of the packets from their plastic gowns

she very carefully opened each box so as to not rip or damage it

she carefully folded back the inner paper

she removed every single cigarette

in one box, she replaced the contents with candy cigarettes

and then, painstakingly, she slid each box back into its plastic wrap

re-folded and stuck the plastic at the bottom

put them back in the outer plastic, with the candy cigarette one at the bottom (so as to be last) and restuck that

and gave the cigrarettes to my granddad

Born on this day 75 years ago: vivacious bad girl, writer, go-go dancer, advice columnist, art critic, drug dealer, globe-trotter and avant-garde New York scene-maker Cookie Mueller (née Dorothy Karen Mueller, 2 March 1949 – 10 November 1989). She’s a fiercely charismatic presence in early John Waters "gutter films" like Multiple Maniacs (1970), Pink Flamingos (1972) and Female Trouble (1974). Her close confidante, photographer Nan Goldin would describe Mueller as “the most fabulous woman I’d ever seen ... She was the starlet of the Lower East Side: a poetess, a short-story writer, she starred in John Waters’ early movies. She was sort of the queen of the whole downtown social scene.” (Unsurprisingly, Goldin has an eye for vivid detail. In the wrenching 2022 documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, she recalls that the first time she met Cookie in Provincetown in the 1970s, Mueller was wearing vintage Springolator heels held together with safety pins!). I highly recommend investigating Mueller’s wry and elegant autobiographical musings like Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black or Garden of Ashes (recently reissued) – or Chloe Griffin’s excellent 2014 biography Edgewise: A Picture of Cookie Mueller. A Few of the Great Things I Experienced in 2023

2023 seemed to be a year of catch-up, flashback and fast-forward all at the same time.   The Fledgling by Octavia Butler, was a highly enjoyable and original take on vampire lore. They are apparently making a tv series out of it. They won’t be able to keep the sex scenes and love interests unless the change the apparent age of the main character.  In the book she appears to be about 11years old,…

A Game of Thrones, Bran II

His father had told him that he ought to say his farewells today, and he had tried.

After the hunt had ridden out, he wandered through the castle with his wolf at his side, intending to visit the ones who would be left behind, Old Nan and Gage the cook, Mikken in his smithy, Hodor the stableboy who smiled so much and took care of his pony and never said anything but “Hodor,” the man in the glass gardens who gave him a blackberry when he came to visit…

But it was no good.

He had gone to the stable first, and seen his pony there in its stall, except it wasn’t his pony anymore, he was getting a real horse and leaving the pony behind, and all of a sudden Bran just wanted to sit down and cry.

He turned and ran off before Hodor and the other stableboys could see the tears in his eyes.

That was the end of his farewells.
