Nata Metlukh This simple gif uses some interesting sound effects to simulate the sound of objects. This was a novel experience for me, for example, the sound of boiling water in the boiling lines echoing the shaking edges is a very vivid and imaginative way to express this.
In Smear, he experimented with unique sounds to simulate the sound of kneading a face, maybe dough or a sandbag or something. This experimentation gave me a lot of new ideas for post-production sound effects.
What I like most here is the experimentation with different sound effects like walking or character movement, which is not the same as a simple sound simulation. He tried a lot of other sound effects and got exciting results.
I searched the internet for something that would help me understand how to better use and create sound effects to help me with my major study of animation. I found some helpful videos and books and Designing Sound for Animation was a great help as it explains the use of sound in animation in a multifaceted and logical way. It gave me a complete understanding of the importance of sound in animation.
Robin does an excellent job of explaining how to simulate the movement of objects from left to right in the pan pot on the previous mixer) lowering and raising the left and right speakers can affect the shifting of object positions very well. (Beauchamp, 2013)
Tumblr media
Volume, panning, delay and reverb can also be used to create foreground, mid-ground and background for the sound. It is even possible to choose what the audience hears and the angle from which they hear it. And use some off-field sounds that are not shown in the animation to illustrate the surroundings, an approach that can save significant animation costs.

The Film Regular by Nata Metlukh was uploaded to Vimeo on the 19th of September, 2022.
This film is really fun and playful but what I find most useful in watching it is the way that shapes are used. Characters bodies are vastly different and the way they move/ look communicates a lot to the viewer about who that character is. Using shapes as a language for communication makes the audience's job easier. On top of just using shapes, Nata also pushes poses to extremes and makes use of the shapes the characters are constructed from, with them leaning, stretching or bending to cartoonish poses. While designing my characters I put a lot of thought into the shapes which I would use.
I looked online for resources that could help me understand how to use better character designs to encourage better storytelling. I found a few videos and books which helped, Jakie Droujko's youtube channel really helped me as she breaks down her process and reviews other artists' portfolios. The video below is an example of a video I used to better understand the early character-designing process.
youtube
This video also helped with understanding how to analyze other peoples character designs. Looking at breaking down the designs I like into their key elements gives me the ability to use those elements like ingredients to imply the story that I want for my characters.
youtube
The book Drawn To Life also helped a lot with shape theory and how to design archetypes and understand the way characters shapes change how they move and the type of poses which they can do, and in turn how deciding on the shapes early on can influence the body language of a character in a big way.

The Future from an Alternate Perspective from Reece Parker on Vimeo.
Teamed up with the cool folks at Trifilm to direct this animated film for Microsoft. The story follows our main character Luis as he tries to clearly explain the complexities and nuances of ‘language’, and the challenges of teaching AI to thoroughly understand it. A massive project, an incredibly talented team, and a little bit of luck to get to the finish line. So thankful to my fellow artists and friends who helped pull this off.

ISTD: Spaces Between - Contemporary Research
This piece is again still illustration based but it’s an animation which presents incredibly relatable awkward moments which we have all experienced, highlighting them in a series. It is very good at making the viewer uncomfortable and recognising emotions. I think this familiarity is a very powerful tool which I hope to bring into my own work.

Regular from Nata Metlukh on Vimeo.
The story is set in a graphic design world where fonts are the main characters. They have unique properties: Bold makes everything thicker, Italic tilts things, Monospace equalizes objects by width, etc. Fonts team up to build a garden, and the five boxing wizards jump in quickly to inspect their work. A negative space storm flushes everything away, but Regular comes and fixes the garden.
Logline: The five boxing wizards jump quickly.

The last animated short from Nata Metlukh I watched is Paper or Plastic, which blowed my mind with its unique graphic design style and animation. The latest film Regular is another master piece, in my opinion, which transforms the same flat figures into rather vivid animated figures and objects.
