It's National Daughters Day, I guess. Didn't know that until I opened Facebook and saw my friends who have daughters posting about it. There's a part of me that's so tempted to unblock my parents and see if they included me in their National Daughters Day posts. But I won't do that, because I don't think I could handle the results either way. Best case scenario, they're posting pictures of me from when I was 19-21 years old, still Catholic, still had long hair, and they still thought I was straight. It's insulting to me to see that because I'm not like that anymore and they know it as well as I do, but refuse to acknowledge it. Worst case scenario, they're not posting about me at all, and that would hurt just as much because I am their daughter even if they don't want me anymore.

I guess it just hurts knowing that I'd like to be a surrogate daughter to someone. I've had several times over the last few months that I've just cried because I wanted to be held like someone's child, and I don't have anyone to do that for me. I miss feeling like there was someone in my life who would care for me like that.

Happy National Daughters Day!

National Daughters Day actually started in India in 2007. In the very patriarchal society, the holiday was started to encourage people to appreciate their daughters more.

The day was founded by Archies Ltd., a greeting card company in New Delhi. It served as a catalyst to a hopeful change in the culture. Since then, it has spread throughout the world.

Even if you don't have a daughter, the women in your life came from somewhere! Celebrate and appreciate them as well.

Here's some lovely ways to celebrate!

Take your daughter out for lunch or dinner! Make sure to talk to her about how proud you are and how much you appreciate her.

Send a card or call your daughter. This is a nice way to just remind your daughter that she is loved and appreciated. You can even tuck a little coupon or gift card in there as a gift.

Arrange a date. This is more for those of you with younger daughters out there (but feel free to do it with your adult daughters, too!). Arrange to do something special, like a tea party or a hike, and spend some time with her, away from the everyday stress of parenthood.

Create a playlist. Choose songs that make you think of her. Some suggestions are In My Daughter's Eyes, Isn't She Lovely, and Daddy's Little Girl.

Take a getaway trip. Whether it's for two weeks or two days, take some time to have your daughter go on a fun trip away to make some memories.
