National Button Day

National Button Day is celebrated on November 16 of every year. National Button Day is a celebration of buttons, button makers and button collectors. The Button is a small fastener made of plastic to secure two pieces of fabric together. The buttons are often attached to the articles of clothing, but it can also be used on things like bags and wallets. If you think the buttons doesn’t deserve a day, then think about life without buttons. Hence Button Day is a special day to honor the makers of the Button and enjoy the day by collecting some Buttons.

History of National Button Day

National Button Society, founded in 1938 created the National Button Day as a day to collect some innovative buttons and to make some handmade crafts with those buttons. The size of the buttons may vary according to their uses. The buttons in Shirts are generally small and spaced close together. The buttons on the coat are larger and spaced further apart. The size of the buttons are measured in lignes (1inch=40linges). The buttons for men’s are always on the right side of the shirt as they always tend to dress and most of the men’s are right-handed. For Women’s, the buttons are on the left side as they rely on maids to help dress them and it is always easier for the servant to button from the other side.

How to Celebrate National Button Day

The best way to celebrate the National Button Day is by collecting some buttons from the old clothes. It can be used to repair the clothes which lost their button. Buttons are also a great source for craft ideas. With buttons, create some cute gadgets like picture frames, clocks, lampshades, purses, bags, headbands, costume jewelry and much more. Then you can present those gadgets to your loved ones.

Today is #nationalbuttonday 💗There are many memories in this little box of buttons. My Mom would set the box in front of us if she needed to keep five little girls busy with some constructive play - we were well occupied sorting these treasures and finding the best ones or even two alike! Many of these buttons have their own story, like the tweedy cloth covered button which is a reminder of my childhood. I made a few extra dollars covering buttons using a vintage cast iron peddle machine for the company that produced children’s coats where my Mom worked as a supervisor. There are other buttons in the box with bits of thread and fabric still attached. Grandma would always strip old clothes of buttons and zippers before the worn clothing was cut into strips to be recycled into rag rugs. Large buttons were made into spinning ‘singing’ toys for the kids by adding a bit of strong string. There are buttons made of bone and wood, and a fun collection of novelty buttons from sewing projects. National Button Day

Although there are many kinds of buttons, by most accounts National Button Day celebrates buttons that are used on clothing, for ornamentation or as fasteners. The first buttons were used for ornamentation and seals, and have been found in the Indus River Valley (c. 2800-2600 BCE), China (c. 2000-1500 BCE), and ancient Rome. The oldest known button—dating to 5000 BCE—was made from a curved shell and found in the Indus River Valley. Buttons that function as fasteners, along with buttonholes, didn't come about until the 13th century, where they first appeared in Germany, and spread throughout Europe. They have been made from almost every material, their composition often reflecting the popular materials of the era in which they were made. Today they are most often constructed out of hard plastic, metals, seashells, or wood. They have been created by artisans, artists, and craftspeople, out of raw materials or found objects such as fossils, or from a combination of both. They have been made in small quantities, or in large scale quantities at factories.

Button collecting, which is most popular in the United States, varies from people having buttons in a container for future use, to casual collecting, to competitive collecting. The National Button Society was founded in 1938. Hobbies magazine had organized a hobby show in Chicago in 1938, and button collectors participated in the show. Later that year they formed the Society, and held their own button show the following year. Many state and local button clubs were formed the following decade, and they also put on button shows. Today the National Button Society has over 3,000 members in four continents. The Society focuses on educational research and exhibitions, the publication of materials about buttons, and the preservation of the importance of buttons.

How to Observe National Button Day

The easiest way to celebrate the day is to wear something with buttons. If you have a container where you keep spare buttons, you could compare the different types of buttons you have in it, or you could compare the variations of the buttons you have on different pieces of clothing. If you are an avid button collector, you could take out your collection to look at, and could show it to others. If you have interest in button collecting you could become a National Button Society member, and see if your state has its own button society. You could plan ahead to attend an upcoming button show, and learn more about the hobby by purchasing something informative from the National Button Society store.

Going to a museum that showcases buttons is a great way to spend the day, and some museums even display some of their collections online. The Victoria & Albert Museum has buttons for view online. Many Smithsonian museums have buttons, such as the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Hammond Turner & Sons in England has an online museum. There are a handful of button museums in the United States, including the Waterbury Button Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut, and the Keep Homestead Museum in Monson, Massachusetts. Tyra and I tributed @patrickkellylegacy by documenting his iconic button dress for the pages of Arise Magazine!
