I’ve seen quite a few different fics and such suggest the idea of tanuma’s dad having worked with the matoba’s before, and I’d never really thought too much abt it until now, seeing it again after having seen the [raws spoilers] chapter abt matoba and taki having already met, made me realise how insane that would actually be

putting this under a read more cause it got long lmao

like it makes total sense that tanuma’s dad would have dealings with exorcists given his work, and the matoba’s are basically the biggest exorcist family in the area, so it tracks. Idk if they’d sent out matoba himself to coordinate with some random monk, but tanuma could’ve at least met nanase if not matoba himself

but god there’s so much potential in this idea like can you imagine, there’s so many different ways it could go and they’re all hilarious. natsume just offhandedly mentions matoba’s name while telling tanuma abt some incident he had to handle with natori and tanuma just being like ‘oh matoba-san? that name sounds familiar, I think my dad once helped out an exorcist with that name’ and natsume just promptly has an aneurysm

or matoba coming over to tanuma’s house to work with his dad and mentioning to tanuma that he’s an exorcist, and tanuma without thinking just going ‘oh you’re an exorcist, do you know natori-san then?’ and now matoba’s the one having an aneurysm trying to figure out how he knows natori. like any other exorcist would be understandable, he’s the son of a monk its not surprising that he’d have met another exorcist before, but natori’s the one exorcist who’s trying to keep his identity a secret, so it’s unlikely he’d work with more civilian clients. so he very seriously turns and asks tanuma how he knows this and tanuma’s just like ‘oh yeah my friend knows him, we met once’ and matoba finally clicks and remembers he’s talking to a high school aged boy living in the same town as natsume, he’d just assumed tanuma’s powers were too weak to be relevant to that. he just straight up asks tanuma if his friend is ‘natsume-kun by any chance?’ and tanuma’s just :O

(and matoba of course bombards him with questions about his friendship with natsume. because of course he does)

tanuma tells natsume about this later and natsume is just frantic, making tanuma swear to never go near matoba again and insisting on walking Everyone with him to make sure nothing happens. honestly in the context of the suspicious visitor arc too tanuma would probably feel p bad abt this, like natsume’s just pushing him away again and not letting him get involved in youkai stuff, until he mentions it to nyanko and he’s just like ‘oh no you should stay out of it that guy’s a fucking dick, natume’s just worried that he’ll use you to try and blackmail him lol’

Not that omg he has a sister, Matoba is the collector!, blah blah part. Scratch that.

She hates cats. Even our somewhat-of-a-villain so far, Matoba Seiji, loves cats.

If that doesn't make you feel slightly uncomfortable about her in a series where at least tolerating cats is a must, then I don't know what will.

(It was a joke but the more I thought about it... There might be also something to it.)

Yay, the scanlation is up! Finally, everyone can suffer alongside me. 

But, uh. This is how that page should go. I am absolutely sure of this. The reason I know the “fragment of a connection to ayakashi” thing is about the reflection and not "the ayakashi” is because it was actually edited between the original magazine and the final volume. (Yes I have both. Shush.)

The original line didn’t mention the reflection, saying only “Such a tiny, insignificant fragment of a connection to ayakashi.” Since the connection between his statement and the reflection was apparently important enough to clarify, I think the intent of this line is to say that the reflection isn’t enough for him, but other things might be.

Thanks for chapter 104! I hope you're all healthy and safe! I re-read Natsume Yuujinchou a few times this year and chapter 104 is one of my favs chapters BECAUSE Matoba actually asked the cat vessel if they're willing to go with him! To me, Matoba is the kind of character that would probably take the cat away regardless of it's will. I wonder if we can see it as a character development? (I hope the author gives Matoba more screen time... Gosh, I love him ;-;)

As always, I can't speak for the others but I can at the very least say that I've been doing very well lately!

And, wow, this question really put into perspective just how focused I've been in trying to release the rest of the Homura arc. I forgot how much of a bad rep Matoba has.

Since Matoba's a major player in this arc, I've had to really put myself into his headspace, so I've had to really think about him a lot. Sometimes I disliked it because I much prefer being in Natsume's headspace. But before anyone asks, I don't hate Matoba.

Matoba's just a complicated guy.

And based on how I interpret him, I don't consider that cat scene a sign of character development. To me, it's a glimpse into Matoba's true self—a part of himself that he had to set aside in favor of fulfilling his duty as his clan's leader. Matoba may be a forceful person and unhinged about gaining power, but it's usually for the benefit of his clan.

Loving cats falls outside the spectrum of those responsibilities. It's why I didn't blink twice when Matoba had asked and was so accepting of the cat decision despite getting rejected by it. Being forceful would've been contrary to that untainted, genuine affection he has for them, and it wouldn't have been considered love.

okay so I watched the Natsume movie (finally after forever, thanks to apta-scans, y’all are the best)

although I felt it has pacing issues here and there* the movie is very nice, the music is lovely, the animation is just amazing, seriously the best I’ve seen from the series overall (I don’t know what it was, probably money and time, but boy did it do wonders), my son accepting and learning stuff is A+, Tanuma is still the goodest boy to ever walk this Earth, and I want endless little fluffy toys of tiny Nyanko sensei with a leaf on his head, he/they be so cute I can’t even :D

also the movie blessed us with this glorious shot of Nyanko sensei, 10/10 will rewatch forever

*(nothing serious tho, I just felt like two or three scene transitions were weird, still a great movie)
