Aussie couple want one of Greece's first gay weddings

An Australian couple are planning on hosting a big gay Greek wedding on the stunning island of Rhodes as Greece’s first same-sex marriages begin.

Last month, Greece became the first Christian Orthodox country to legalise same-sex marriage, as well as adoption for gay couples.

The marriages are now starting across Greece. Just days after the law passed, an Aussie couple were reportedly the first to contact Rhodes’ registry office about a ceremony on the outrageously picturesque Greek island.

Local outlet Dimokratiki.gr reported the men want to have a civil wedding ceremony. The men were so eager that officials at the island’s registry office were still working to finalise the necessary procedures at the time.

On February 15, Greece’s parliament approved a same-sex marriage bill 176 votes to 76.

Local media reported that the first legal gay wedding ceremony was in Athens on March 3, 2024.

Gay dads of three finally marry in Greece

Greek gay couple Stavros Gavriliades and Dimitris Eleysiniotis tied the knot in front of loved ones at the City Hall in the Nea Smyrni municipality in Athens.

The men have been together for over 20 years. They told broadcaster Skai TV that before the law change, they felt like “strangers” because they weren’t legally recognised as the fathers of their three children.

Now that they’re married, Stavros will officially adopt Dimitris’ twins and Dimitris will adopt his son.

Greece first gave same-sex couples access to civil partnerships in 2015, but those unions lacked equal parental rights.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis committed to a same-sex marriage bill during the 2023 election.

“This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece — a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values,” he said after it passed.

The video that outraged Greece: "I'm Hurt"

It was Sunday 7 March 2021. Since everything is closed for more than four months of non-stop lockdown and a curfew that begins at 21:00 on weekdays and at 19:00 on weekends, people were just hanging out in Nea Smyrni square. Suddenly, motorcycle cops circle the square trying to  intimidate and scare people away. They single out a family and issue them a fine (300 euros each) for sitting alone on a bench, despite the fact that they had taken all safety precautions like wearing masks.

People, curious as to what has happened, approach the cops, asking them for the reason that they have fined the family, since the family had taken all health precautions. Like mobsters, the biker cops single out one guy and begin to beat him up with solid steel batons (which are illegal for cops) and call for back up. Dozens of biker cops appear and unleash a chase in the area, arresting anyone they see running. The result was 11 people being arrested.

- The rise of right-wing fascism within the greek government -

Even by the elastic standards of what was used to be known as a parliamentary democracy in Greece, the right-wing regime that governs Greece has gradually turned, in just one year and a half in power, into a neo-fascist state.

While Athens is still on lockdown for more than the last 4 months, the right-wing government of “New Democracy” has used that time to act like a mafia organisation, settling scores with its perceived enemies, the greek people, human rights, and freedoms.

In a violent legislative crescendo, the government has managed to establish a junta-like police State, using the pandemic lockdown as a period to quash rights and freedoms with no resistance by the people, (since the right to protest has been indefinitely revoked), that no other greek government even thought to destroy, since the military junta regime was overturned in Greece back in 1974.

From establishing police stations inside the greek universities to the banning of gatherings and protests above a certain number of people and the ban on the freedom of journalists to move freely and report the news, and their plan to criminalize anti-establishment speech and lyrics in songs and art, the ironically self-proclaimed “New Democracy” governing party has decided the hiring of thousands of new policemen as the answer to everything, even the pandemic. Μετά-τραυματικό Παραμύθι Αλήθειας

Ήταν ένα όμορφο κελί, με πολλά δέντρα και πολύχρωμα παγκάκια. Ένα κοινό μεσημέρι, αρχές Μαρτίου, καθόμουν μόνος στην μέση της Κεντρικής Πύλης, της Φυλακής, της γειτονιάς μου. Το κελί ήταν ηλιόλουστο και τα μικρά φυλακισμένα παιδιά έπαιζαν ακριβώς απέναντι μου, μαζί με τους φυλακισμέ��ους γονείς τους. Ένιωσα μια απίστευτη γαλήνη όταν αντίκρισα αυτή την εικόνα. Πίστεψα πως τα ανοιχτά αυτά κελιά άρχισαν επιτέλους να ομορφαίνουν. Ήμασταν πολύ τυπικοί κρατούμενοι. Τα ρούχα μας ήταν καθαρά, φορούσαμε τις μάσκες της Φυλακής, είχαμε γράψει ότι θα βρισκόμαστε εκεί, με τον αριθμό της Κεντρικής Πύλης, και κρατούσαμε όλες τις αποστάσεις.

Ήτανε Κυριακή, η Μέρα του Θεού των Φυλάκων. Μόνο εκείνη την ημέρα είχαμε τον χρόνο και την δυνατότητα να πάμε πλέον στην Κεντρική Πύλη. Είχε λοιμό τον τελευταίο καιρό, τα μέτρα έγιναν χειρότερα από ότι ήταν πριν. Ο ήλιος χάιδευε τα σώματα μας και οι χειροπέδες ήταν πιο ελαφριές από ποτέ. Κάποια στιγμή, ακούσαμε τους Φύλακες που έρχονταν για τον τυπικό έλεγχο. Πήγαν στην απέναντι οικογένεια, ξεκίνησαν να τους κατηγορούν ότι οι οικογένειες απαγορεύεται να έρχονται στην Κεντρική Πύλη του κελιού. Αυτό δεν είχε ειπωθεί ποτέ στους φυλακισμένους, κανείς δεν το γνώριζε. Οι άνθρωποι αυτοί ήταν νόμιμα εκεί. Χωρίς να το καταλάβω, τους πλησίασα. Η γνωστή ροπή προς επανάσταση ενός αθώου. Συνειδητοποίησαν ότι τους επέβαλαν φυλάκιση σε απομονωμένο κελί όλους ξεχωριστά, για πεντακόσιες ημέρες. Παίρνω αυθόρμητα τον Λόγο και απευθύνομαι στον Φύλακα με ευγενικό - ανθρώπινο τρόπο. Αίφνης, αισθάνομαι ένα γκλόπ κατά πάνω μου να με χτυπάει με δύναμη. Τα παιδιά ούρλιαζαν αλλά οι φύλακες συνέχιζαν να με χτυπούν δυνατά, ώσπου μια στιγμή φώναξα “ΠΟΝΑΩ”. Εκείνοι συνέχισαν ακόμη πιο δυνατά και μου είπαν να το βουλώσω.

Όταν άνοιξα τα μάτια μου, ��ίδα γιατρούς από πάνω μου να μου φωνάζουν “Ηρέμησε! Δεν υπάρχουν Φύλακες, δεν είσαι σε κελί, είσαι ελεύθερος!” Ελεύθερος; “Βιώνεις μετά-τραυματικό σοκ”. Μετά από λίγο άρχισα σιγά-σιγά να θυμάμαι. Ήταν μεσημέρι, είμαι μεταπτυχιακός φοιτητής, με λένε Νικόλα. Είχα πάει την Κυριακή μια βόλτα στην πλατεία, είχα στείλει το μήνυμα 6, είχα φορέσει την μάσκα και κρατούσα την κατάλληλη απόσταση από τον φίλο μου. Μετά από λίγο, με τσάκισαν στο ξύλο, επειδή έγραψαν άδικα μια οικογένεια ακριβώς απέναντι και πήγα να την υποστηρίξω. Ελεύθερος; Όχι, δεν είμαι ελεύθερος. Δεν με θέλουν ελεύθερο, ποτέ δεν με ήθελαν. Δεν τους νοιάζει η υγεία μου, με βλέπουν σαν ωμό βρασμένο χρήμα, σαν σκέτη σάρκα που δεν έχει Λόγο.

Πέρασαν οι μέρες και σηκώθηκα να κοιτάξω έξω από το παράθυρο. Οι άνθρωποι ήταν εκεί, αυτοί όμως που με χτύπησαν έλειπαν αυτή την φορά. Με ειδοποίησαν πως ήμουν ένοχος από αυτούς, αλλά επίσης ότι οι άνθρωποι ξεκίνησαν να κάνουν πορείες παντού, για την ελευθερία μας. Την ελευθερία που μας πήραν, όπως μας είπαν αυτοί που κυβερνούν, τάχα για το καλό μας.

Ένιωσα ένα άγγιγμα στην πλάτη, αλλά όταν γύρισα δεν ήταν κανείς εκεί. Εγώ ήξερα ποιος ήταν κι ας μην τους είδα ποτέ. Ήταν ο Αλέξης, ο Παύλος, ο Ζακ, η Ελένη, εγώ, εσύ. Εμείς που τρώμε ξύλο και μας σκοτώνουν ξανά και ξανά, γιατί εμείς θυμόμαστε και δεν ξεχνάμε και αυτοί μας θέλουν νεκρούς, δύο και τρεις και τέσσερις φορές νεκρούς, για να σκοτώσουν τελικά την ιδέα μας για την Ελευθερία και να την θάψουν στα έγκατα, για να πατούν επί πτωμάτων αέναα. Αλλά εμείς σήμερα ας κάνουμε μια συμφωνία, να συνεχίσουμε να παίρνουμε τον Λόγο και να σπάμε τα κελιά όλων των ανθρώπων, όποτε χρειαστεί, για όποιον χρειαστεί, με όποιο κόστος χρειαστεί.
