Sdefa Sdaturday #21
My first youtube video is now live!
youtube
This is a video all about my musical conlang Sdefa! You’ll hear some music, learn the basics of how the language works, and go through a few examples in detail!
I couldn’t get into too much detail in a short(ish) video, so I didn’t cover Sdefa writing, but I plan to in a future video. The main example in the video is what I showed in last week’s post, but here it is again in both writing systems:

That means ā€œYou’re hearing Sdefa, a musical language that I made.ā€ Now you get to actually hear it!

Today's Valyrian glyph is zālagon "to burn". The glyph is a fire underneath something that's being cooked. Looks like a cinder block, but it's probably just a thing. I don't remember what originally it was in the first drawing, but it's definitely a thing. Not a cinder block. Despite the fact that it really looks like a cinder block.

Devera script, revised.
Been putting off the other two scripts until now (Devera and Ontaele) to focus on another project. I have failed to focus on that other project. So let's get something else done instead, and try again afterwards.
I'm happy with how this one turned out; was able to retain most of the ideas of the original draft, while also tying in some elements of the larger family tree. I find that I enjoy this process more when I let go of making a 1:1 phonetic script and embrace "okay what weird quirk have I accidentally created, and can I make it a feature instead of a bug?" And then all of a sudden it's not just a writing system, it's a writing system with a history.

you know the most fun I had making scripts for my conlangs is improvising with a medium bc its silly fun and also gives you kind of a feel for how different writing tools would work without having to go and buy tools you'd never use again. In honor of that here's a list of mediums I tried to use for writing my conscripts, but they get more unhinged as time goes on
regular pen and paper - classic
watercolors - I didn't want to spend money on a calligraphy brush and this felt like a decent approximation
MS paint - my beloved, likely not the best software for it tho
stick in dirt - if you haven't done it try it and leave random text to baffle any people who stumble on it
carving into a stick with a sharp rock - stone age classic, did it on a whim on a walk and it was the most fun ive had with any of my scripts
honorable mention: carving into small rocks with a nail - I only used it for making runestones
using a broken boxcuter blade with paints I made from wildflowers - i was bored
the same paints but with a brush I improvised from my own hair - no further comments

Valya Vednesday #4
I’ve been working on a Valya font! It’ll be a while, since there’ll eventually be hundreds of glyphs, but I have the basic set complete:
Tumblr media
The earliest form of the Valya script was a syllabary, and these 51 glyphs are the descendants of the original ones. Aside from the i, u, and a glyphs, the rest of these are all still used for CV syllables in modern Valya. (I’m not actually sure if those first three will get used; right now I don’t have any use for them but they might show up in some form or another.)
The other few hundred glyphs are for CCV syllables (with a few exceptions) and are all essentially ligatures of pairs of these ones. Lya (shown at the top) is a ligature of li and a, for example. Most combinations are a little less straightforward, for a couple reasons. One is that there are multiple possible ligatures for most CCV syllables, as there are multiple sequences in Old Valya that result in the same syllable in Modern Valya. Generally, CiCV and CuCV will end up the same, but also due to assimilation and other sound changes there are some Modern Valya syllables that could potentially have eight different sources in Old Valya! In some cases words will be spelled historically (i.e. with a ligature of Ci-CV if that’s the historical form of the word), but in many cases spellings will change for convenience. It’ll be a pretty messy system in the end!
Here are a few sample sentences I was able to construct using only the glyphs I’ve made so far (all the CV syllables plus lya):
Tumblr media
I haven’t done any work on kerning yet but it looks like it won’t be as bad as I initially feared—only a few pairs of characters look like they need significant adjustment in the above examples.
Next week I’ll talk about the real and fictional development of this writing system!

Today's Valyrian glyph is pryjagon "to destroy", or, more commonly, "to break". I thought "destroy" sounded cooler so I used that in the image. I should've added explosions, too. PKHWIU! PKHWIU!!! Heh, heh... This is the first time I wrote up this section of Daenerys's speech in glyphs. It's long...
