So earlier today, everyone on twitter got all confused because everything was showing a “rate limit exceeded” error message with no further clarification whatsoever. Then, some hours later, Mister dumb-dumb claims its “totally deliberate u guys” to “address extreme levels of data scraping”, and limiting people to seeing 600 posts per day. That might sound like a lot, but the way Twitter loads its feed, that basically means you get about 30 seconds of usage.
Tumblr media
So basically, Mister dumb-dumb spent an unearthly amount of money to buy one of the biggest, most relied-upon social networks in the world, fired all the people who actually worked there, changed the verification badges so instead of confirming celeb accounts are legit, they instead mean “my cult is paying me $8″, claimed an adjective is a slur and is now massively restricting people using the service.
Tumblr media
He does claim this is “temporary”, but given this idiot’s track record, he probably doesn’t know how to fix it. Especially since he laid off most of the actual software engineers.
Twitter has, for years, been a primary platform for both communities as well as keeping up on news. If people can barely see any tweets per day, that all goes right out the window.
Twitter got so big largely because it was convenient to get those things on one feed. Netflix got big when it started because it was convenient to have everything in one place, it reduced the amount of piracy that was going on for film/TV because it was easier and more convenient than the old torrenting services of the day. Now, every last studio wants to cash in with its own streaming service, and people are going back to piracy because its more convenient that having 500 different monthly subscriptions. This is the social media version of that. Mister dumb-dumb took one of the most convenient social media platforms and utterly mangled it, so user retention is understandably going through the floor.
Anyway, that means a lot of the communities I’ve been a part of are splitting all over the place to countless third party platforms. I’m not 100% sure yet, but I might be making more of an effort to get used to Tumblr. I’ve never quite felt confident posting here, but its currently the best alternative; Reddit is also going down the toilet with their API changes, Facebook is more built for people you know IRL rather than fandom communities (I never particularly liked the groups systems there), Discord is utterly alien to me and I simply cannot learn how to make the most of it and stuff like Mastodon or random-twitter-knockoff-that-my-mutuals-aren’t-bothering-to-tell-me-what-it-is are too niche and a bit weird.
So yeah, this feed might become more active with videogame screenshots, Star Trek episode thoughts and opinions, neurodivergent ramblings and whatever else, idk.
EDIT: News article with a bit more detail if you want

What are the application scenarios of SOCKS5 proxy?
SOCKS5 proxy, as an advanced proxy protocol, has stronger privacy protection and network performance optimization capabilities, so it is widely used in various scenarios. Next, we will introduce the common application scenarios of SOCKS5 proxy.
Tumblr media
1. Data Scraping and Web Crawling
For users engaged in data crawling and web crawling, SOCKS5 proxy has excellent performance advantages. It is able to bypass IP blocking of websites and simulate multiple IP accesses to the target site, thus preventing crawlers from being blocked due to frequent visits. In addition, SOCKS5 supports a variety of protocols (TCP/UDP), so it can handle the diverse needs of data flow and network requests, ensuring smoother data crawling tasks.
2. Enhanced Network Privacy
The SOCKS5 proxy is able to hide the user's real IP address and forward network requests through a proxy server, allowing users to access the network with a higher degree of anonymity. This is especially important for users who want to protect their privacy and avoid being tracked. Especially when transferring sensitive data or accessing geo-restricted websites, the SOCKS5 proxy can provide users with additional privacy protection.
3. Bypassing geo-restrictions
Many websites, content and services have restrictions on access to certain countries or regions, such as streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) or game servers. By using a SOCKS5 proxy, users can select IP addresses from other countries or regions, thus bypassing these geographical restrictions and accessing otherwise unavailable content or services, and enjoying a globalized online experience.
4. Online Gaming
For online gamers, especially when participating in multiplayer games on cross-region or global servers, network latency (ping) is a key factor affecting the gaming experience, and the SOCKS5 proxy can help gamers reduce latency and optimize connection speeds, especially when using games with servers located overseas, the SOCKS5 proxy can provide a smoother gaming experience.
5. File Transfer
The SOCKS5 proxy performs particularly well with file transfer protocols (such as FTP, BitTorrent, etc.). Because it supports the UDP protocol, this enables the SOCKS5 proxy to provide faster transfer speeds and more stable connections when dealing with large file transfers or P2P connections. Especially in peer-to-peer networks, the SOCKS5 proxy allows users to avoid attacks due to IP exposure.

The Many Applications of Residential Proxy Servers
Residential proxy servers are a powerful tool that can enable a wide variety of use cases across different industries. Unlike datacenter proxies that use IP addresses assigned to servers, residential proxies leverage IP addresses belonging to real internet users and their home devices. This provides several key advantages that make residential proxies invaluable for many applications.
Web Scraping and Data Extraction
One of the primary use cases for residential proxies is web scraping and large-scale data extraction. When scraping websites, using residential IPs can significantly reduce the chances of getting blocked or banned. Websites are much more likely to trust and allow requests coming from residential IP addresses versus those from known data centerIP ranges.
This makes residential proxies essential for price comparison, market research, lead generation, and competitive analysis. A market researcher, for example, can use residential proxies to gather sales intelligence data from various e-commerce sites without revealing their actual location or IP address.
Similarly, an e-commerce business can leverage residential IPs to monitor product listings, prices, and reviews across competitor websites. This provides valuable insights to inform their own pricing and product strategies.
Content Access and Geo-Targeting
Residential proxies also enable users to access online content that is restricted or only available in certain geographic regions. This is particularly useful for streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or BBC iPlayer, which often impose geo-restrictions on their content libraries.
By connecting through a residential proxy in the target location, users can bypass these restrictions and access the local content catalog. This is valuable not just for individual consumers, but also for businesses that need to test their apps and websites from different locations.
Residential proxies can also help businesses deliver more personalized, location-based experiences to their customers. An e-commerce store, for instance, can use residential IPs to show users products, pricing, and promotions tailored to their apparent geographic region.
Ad Verification and Brand Protection
Residential proxy networks are crucial for verifying the delivery and performance of online advertising campaigns. Ad verification providers can use residential IPs to monitor the visibility, placement, and engagement of ads across various websites, apps, and platforms without being detected or blocked.
This helps identify ad fraud, such as bot traffic or competitor interference and ensures brands get the full value from their advertising spend. Residential proxies are also vital for brand protection use cases, where businesses need to constantly monitor the web for copyright infringement, trademark abuse, and other malicious activities.
Application and Website Testing
Residential proxy servers play a key role in testing the functionality, usability, and performance of apps and websites across different locations, devices, and network conditions. Developers and QA teams can use residential IPs to simulate real-world user experiences from various geographic regions.
Tumblr media
Fintech and Financial Services
In the financial sector, residential proxies are used for a range of applications, from fraud detection to market data aggregation. Banks and fintech firms can leverage residential IPs to monitor online transactions, identify suspicious activities, and prevent financial crimes like money laundering.
Residential proxies are also crucial for collecting real-time market data, such as stock prices and currency exchange rates, from various sources without being blocked or rate-limited. This data can then be used to power trading algorithms, investment research, and other financial services.
Residential Proxy Advantages
The key advantages that make residential proxies so valuable across these diverse use cases include:
Increased Trust and Reduced Blocking: Websites and online services are generally more trusting of requests from residential IP addresses, as they are less likely to be associated with bots, scrapers, or other malicious activities. This significantly reduces the chances of getting blocked or banned.
Improved Geo-Targeting: Residential proxies allow users to appear as if they are accessing the internet from different geographic locations, enabling more accurate location-based content, pricing, and experiences.
Enhanced Privacy and Anonymity: By masking the user’s actual IP address and location, residential proxies provide an extra layer of privacy and anonymity, which is crucial for sensitive applications like financial services and brand protection.
Scalability and Reliability: Residential proxy networks, such as those offered by providers like NetNut, can offer unlimited concurrent sessions and high availability, ensuring consistent performance and reliability even under heavy load.

They don't really need motor inputs in training data. By the time they're transfering the model to the real world, it already knows how to move around. But it doesn't know how to handle all the crazy stuff it's never seen before when it has to actually touch grass for the first time. There just isn't very much video footage of robots doing things and there isn't much first-person footage of people doing mundane things.
My vague understanding of the embodied pipeline is that most of it happens in simulated environments and then they try to transfer that to the real world. It's much cheaper to run a million simulations than it is to build a million robots or wait for one robot to do a million things. Boston Dynamics often talks about this approach.
We can make robots do basically whatever we want in simulations now. The hurdle is transferring that to the real world.
Meta has definitely been working on building up the foundations for embodied stuff with SegmentAnything and the Ego-Exo4D dataset and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm not remembering right now. But Ego-Exo4D is only 1300 hours of video and we can't generate synthetic data for that yet. I don't think VR would help them because they don't need more simulated data. I think the always-on first-person cameras in their sunglasses are a better way to scrape the human experience at scale.
I think they were betting on remote work and education and basically becoming the next generation of the Chromebook.
They also need some way to make money that isn't illegal in the EU (and increasingly the rest of the world). Google has GCP and various doodads and can sell SEO ranking, apple has phones and laptops and they can sell the default search engine in Safari, microsoft has laptops and software licenses and Azure, Amazon has AWS and Amazon, Netflix can sell access to content. Meta has nothing except the world's most lucrative surveillance network. No cloud services, no physical devices, no software or content to license. So I guess they figured VR devices were the easiest market to break into since everyone else thinks it's a stupid product and won't try to compete.
Taken at face value the metaverse is so obviously stupid that I have a hard time understanding why Facebook would invest anything in it at all. I kinda wonder if originally the idea was to subsidize data production for embodied AI? which may or may not work, but would be potentially non-stupid.
Like fundamentally the big issue in robotics and embodied AI is that you can't train the robotic version of GPT because you don't have the data. You need millions of hours, not just of video footage, but of video footage in which people are manipulating objects with motor inputs that you can directly record, and there's just no way you can get that much data manually. From a business standpoint then, the metaverse stuff would have a clear purpose -- get enough humans producing motor input/video data that you can train an embodied AI from it, and then have exclusive ownership of the data needed to make humanoid robotics. In this view, the metaverse doesn't need to be self-sustaining, it just needs to be cheaper than hiring thousands of people to wear specialized recording equipment and mess around with objects for years at a time.
Of course this is probably not correct, a fallacy of trying to make sense from senseless action. Sometimes companies just do really stupid stuff. But it's at least plausible enough to keep an eye on.

Aaron Swartz, vindicated
Tumblr media
It’s been eight years since Aaron Swartz took his own life. Aaron had been charged with 13 felonies under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) for violating the terms of service on the JSTOR database of scholarly articles.
Prosecutors Stephen Heymann and Carmen Ortiz didn’t dispute that Aaron was allowed to access the articles he retrieved. Rather, they said that the WAY he accessed them (using a script instead of clicking on links) was a terms-of-service violation and hence a crime.
In other words: any business could conjure a felony out of thin air by making you click through an unreadable garbage-novella of legalese proscribing the use of a service they granted you access to. Violate any of those terms and you face a prison sentence.
This isn’t law as we know it, it’s Felony Contempt of Business Model, and the most alarming thing was that this interpretation of the CFAA wasn’t completely ridiculous, given how badly drafted that law is.
Ronald Reagan signed CFAA into law. Fed prosecutors had been seeking broad authority to punish “hacking” and had drawn up an absurdly broad definition of cybercrime that would give them latitude to go after anyone they didn’t like.
They wanted to define hacking as “exceeding your authorization” on a computer that didn’t belong to you. Even in the mid-1980s, legal and technical scholars recognized the potential dangers of a definition this broad, but not Ronald Reagan.
Then Reagan got spooked by the movie Wargames — yes, the one with Matthew Broderick — and urged the dimbulbs in the Congress and Senate to send the CFAA to his desk. They obliged, he signed it, and CFAA became law in 1986.
In the decades since, CFAA has become a major source of cybersecurity mischief. Security researchers who audit systems and warn their users about defects in them are silenced with CFAA threats, giving companies a veto over who can criticize them and how.
Monopolistic online businesses threaten their competitors with CFAA liability. Companies like Facebook have managed to prevail in court, interpreting CFAA the same way Aaron’s prosecutors did, making terms-of-service violations into violations of the law.
But cracks have appeared in this dangerous interpretation of CFAA. The ACLU and a group of journalists have been litigating to overturn portions of the law since 2016:
https://www.aclu.org/cases/sandvig-v-barr-challenge-cfaa-prohibition-uncovering-racial-discrimination-online
And in 2019, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals produced a remarkably good ruling on CFAA in Hiq v Linkedin, splitting with its own (terrible) precedents in Power Ventures and Nosal II.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/09/victory-ruling-hiq-v-linkedin-protects-scraping-public-data
But the main event for CFAA-fighters has been at the Supreme Court this year, where the Van Buren case promised to make or break the worst elements of the CFAA for good.
The truism “hard cases make bad law” was especially true in Van Buren. Nathan Van Buren was a crooked Georgia cop who took a bribe to look up a sex-worker’s personal information in the state law-enforcement database in a FBI sting.
Van Buren thought he was helping a criminal determine whether the sex-worker was an undercover cop.
Van Buren is a bad man and a bad cop.
But he isn’t a hacker.
Nevertheless, prosecutors charged him under the CFAA, saying that while he was allowed to access the database, doing so for an improper purpose was a hacking crime, because he “exceeded his authorization.”
This may sound sensible — or just expedient — to you. But if the prosecutors were right — if accessing a computer you were authorized to use, but in an unauthorized way — is a felony, then almost everyone is a felon.
The DoJ’s theory of the CFAA would make most terms-of-service violations into potential jailable offenses (think “sharing Netflix passwords”). If federal prosecutors gain the power to threaten prison for anyone — everyone — this won’t be used to rid the world of dirty cops.
Rather, it will be used against people who already bear the brunt of prosecutorial overreach, creating leverage over the victims of dirty cops.
Thankfully, the Supremes agreed. Yesterday, they handed down a good — if not great — ruling in Van Buren.
The best analysis — as ever — comes from my EFF colleagues Kurt Opsahl and Aaron Mackey.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/06/van-buren-victory-against-overbroad-interpretations-cfaa-protects-security
As they point out, the heart of the ruling is a ban on breaking into computer systems — not criminalizing entering the wrong command into a computer you’re allowed to use.
This correct interpretation (far narrower than the DoJ’s) safeguards security researchers, competitors, and other researchers doing things like gathering data from a housing site to investigate racial bias in rental ads.
As the court pointed out, the DoJ’s interpretation was so broad that it could criminalize “embellishing an online-dating profile to using a pseudonym on Facebook.”
The ruling was good, but not perfect. A single footnote explains that the court isn’t ruling on whether the CFAA only applies when someone bypasses a technical measure, which leaves the door open to turning policy and contract violations into crimes.
SCOTUS got it (mostly) right here. They vindicated Aaron Swartz and all the other victims who were bullied, silenced and terrorized by the CFAA. They took a huge step towards undoing one of Ronald Reagan’s many idiocies.
Van Buren should be punished for corruption — under anti-corruption law, not under a definition of hacking so broad that it captures normal activities we all engage in several times, every day.

Factors Deciding the Future of CRM: What lies next?
Take a look around. Everything around you is evolving.
You. Your business. Your customers.
But what about CRM?
Why should your CRM software be stagnant? Is it an outdated one or the one with irrelevant features that you don’t need? Is it why your relationship with customers is stagnant and suffering? Do you know where your CRM software heading? Is it lagging? Is it up-to-date with current trends?
There has been a lot of talk about what CRM could be and what it couldn’t. However, as a business leader, you would like to understand which trends are worth pursuing. According to Gartner estimates, global CRM is expected to grow at 13.7 per cent CAGR. The growth, however, shouldn’t be holistic and integrate the evolving needs of business too.
The businesses are recognizing the value of data, their needs are evolving with time, and it is time the CRM is used and embraced as a technology in all its potential and capabilities- which is a lot more than just organizing customers’ information.  So, what is it that CRM should do so that you understand your customers’ expectations and market challenges, way before then your competitors’ do?
So, we sit with a crystal ball (okay, couldn’t resist) and predict what future trends are experts hoping in for CRM. The idea is not to make your existing CRM future-proof but adaptable, flexible, all-embracing and of course, keep your business a few steps ahead in innovation.
The Long Overdue Overhaul
It is time that CRM is seen as a business strategy and not just software –a strategy that understands not only the business but also the customers. This twenty-three-year-old data management technology needs a dire refresh while companies figure out the capabilities within the system to earn rewarding relationships. A system that was initially designed as an application to drive sales function and reduce costs should undergo a transition and work towards building mutually rewarding customer experience.
While customers are getting more and more proactive and engaging the brands online and offline, existing CRM doesn’t. In the foreseeable future, CRM software should be able to listen socially and prompt engagement with customers on all levels. The command centre should alert the stakeholders and filter the noise that there is. The search intelligence, which almost every CRM is lacking, need to be enhanced and should be able to perform just more than a simple string of keyword search. The software should be able to categories the social content as well and push it forward to the right set of people, be it sales, customer support, business development or marketing.
Customers First
Yes, CRM systems were designed to improve the businesses and reduce their costs. To retain their relevancy in future, the customers and their needs should be at the centre point. The CRMs should evolve to make the customer experience better and improved. Customer satisfaction and the prediction of their expectation should be raison d'être for the CRM system. A customer’s buying journey, the analytic tools and the design tools- all should be integrated with CRM. The process of ideal response and action should be in-built for enhancing customer experience and increased ROI.  The optimal response needed for the customers, valuing their time and trust in you can minimize the disruption caused by other technologies and competitors.
Automation is the Keyword and not just AI.
While the world is still getting the hang of it, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have been around in the CRM space since long. However, the possibilities are endless, and if this Infoholic Research is to be believed, the integration of AI with CRM is going to be worth $73 billion by the end of this year.
A few years ago, Zoo's Zia and Sales force's Einstein were the talk of the town and paved the way of AI into the CRM system. These bots would use predictive analysis, streamline and ease the bottlenecks by pushing the customers further down in the funnel and eventually, boosting the sales process.  Or that was what they thought. According to Manny Medina, CEO of Outreach, the customers failed to process the predictive analysis in most cases, and the machine learning algorithms couldn’t offer any real insights into the large datasets of relationship.
Let’s face it. AI is still in the nascent stage. It isn’t ready for a real crossover and definitely can’t be the only factor making or breaking CRM’s fate. The focus, instead, should be on automation and streamlining the existing process to serve as well as understand the customers. However, its potential can’t be ruled out of the big picture, and it is still the most important technology to uncover marketing insights.  Digital streaming companies like Netflix and Amazon are using predictive analysis and based on this personalizing and recommending content. Such precise targeting can take the hot spot among other customer relationship management trends; however, as it happens with any other hot thing, one needs to proceed with caution and apply it brilliantly within the processes.
Human. Not Machines. And the Balance within
The data operations of Facebook, Netflix and Google tells us to trust data sciences and not the damp squib AI and ML. The basic yet intricate human analysis will be at the core of gathering data insights that will help the companies to gain a peek into prospective customers’ mind and understand their psyche. The personal manual touch gets redeemed (once again) in the world of ML but striking a balance between the automation, and manual analysis is where the magic lies. The automation should improve the efficiency and the insights derived from human intervention should be used to spot the prospects and growth opportunities.
The idea of inducting human touch comes from the realization that the businesses can’t afford to treat their customers any longer.
Data-Driven Customer Intelligence
The business response from sales, marketing and customer support often seems like repetitive and based on a trial-and-error. Instead of relying on the data, the businesses are still adopting an opinion-driven route to make commercial decisions. Existing CRMs deliver basic information and not insights that can be used to develop accurate buying journeys and make improved decisions. The existing CRMs don’t take customers’ profile, their social media conversations, demographics, buying preferences and other attributes into account to dive deeper into what a customer wants. Data can lend confidence to the decision-makers and help businesses to find their voice amidst all the web interference.
The future CRMs will add many more algorithms, patterns and alerts to predict customers’ behaviour and buying patterns. The up-selling and cross-selling, recommendation engine and social engagement algorithm should be a package deal in the years to come.
Under-utilized and Unused Data
The businesses take pride in the big data. Each business process has bundles of data lying there. But it is time we address the elephant in the room. It is not about the quantity. It is about quality. According to the Forrester report, up to seventy-three per cent of data is rendered useless. The companies often get data from a third-party collaborator, which can be dirty, inconsistent and incorrect.  The CRM ingests the bad data, leading to inaccurate insights and thus, business decisions that aren’t beneficial. The quality will always trump quantity, and this is why, companies need to get irrelevant, unimportant and inaccurate data out of the system. The right data for the job sets the processes straight and it is time that data scrubbing, data mining services and data appending, data verification are made a standardized process for CRM.
CRM cleaning is a painstakingly, thorough job and a semi-automated process. If you go by 1-10-100 rule, the “uncleaned” CRM data can cause a business $100 every time it takes a decision based on the data.
Mobile First
Mobile-this is where the business lies. Five per cent of businesses deploying mobile CRM has seen a surge in sales and have exceeded their sales quota. Users want their experience to be easy, streamlined and seamless and omnichannel CRM can enhance it-eventually, letting you stand apart and win brownie points.
Conclusion:
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The future depends on what you do today.” So, the future of CRM lies in the fact what you are doing effectively for forecasting accuracy and a positive impact on your business decisions. The data that CRM thrives on, the data, which goes into the system, processes like data scrubbing and cleaning- it can lay the foundation of strong CRM in the future. However, you need to take action today to ensure that your CRM game stays strong and top-notch. Customer satisfaction remains the number one metric, and in the future, too, CRM will be expected to double up as a solid foundation that can harness data and derive actionable insights out of it. An integrated, aware and intelligent customer-centric CRM platform that can forecast accurate results and measure them is what the future needs.

How to Extract Insights from OTT Media Platforms: A Guide to Data Scraping?
Aug 01, 2023
OTT (Over-The-Top) media platform data scraping refers to extracting relevant data from OTT media platforms. OTT platforms are streaming services that deliver media content directly to users online, bypassing old-style broadcast channels. Some examples of leading OTT media platforms include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+.
Data scraping from OTT media platforms involves accessing and extracting various data types, such as user engagement metrics, viewer demographics, content catalogs, ratings and reviews, streaming performance, and more. This data can provide valuable insights for content providers, advertisers, and market researchers to understand audience preferences, track content performance, optimize marketing strategies, and make informed business decisions.
OTT media platform data scraping enables businesses to gather real-time and historical data from multiple platforms. It allows them to analyze trends, identify popular content, target specific audience segments, and enhance content strategies. By leveraging the scraped data, businesses can gain an edge in the highly competitive and rapidly evolving OTT media industry.
How Does OTT Media Platform Data Scraping Work?
Tumblr media
OTT Media Platform Data Scraping involves systematically extracting relevant data from OTT media platforms. Here's a simplified overview of how it works:
Identification of Target Platforms: Determine the specific OTT media platforms you want to scrape data from. This could include platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or any other platform that hosts the content you're interested in.
Data Collection Strategy: Define the scope and parameters of the data you want to scrape. This may include user engagement metrics, content catalogs, ratings and reviews, viewer demographics, streaming performance, and other relevant data points.
Data Scraping Techniques: Employ data scraping techniques to extract the desired data from the OTT platforms. This involves automated software or scripts that navigate the platform's pages, simulate user interactions, and extract data elements based on predefined rules and patterns.
Data Extraction: Use scraping tools to extract the identified data points from the pages. This may involve capturing HTML elements, parsing JSON or XML data, or employing browser automation techniques to interact with the platform's interfaces and retrieve the desired information.
Data Processing and Analysis: Once the data is extracted, it may go through a preprocessing stage to clean and normalize the data for further analysis. This can include removing duplicates, handling missing values, and transforming the data into a structured format suitable for analysis.
Data Storage and Management: Store the scraped data securely and organized, ensuring proper data management practices. This may involve structuring the data into a database, data warehouse, or other storage systems for easy access and retrieval.
Analysis and Insights: Analyze the scraped data to gain actionable insights. This can include performing statistical analysis, visualizing trends, identifying patterns, and deriving meaningful conclusions to inform content strategies, marketing campaigns, or audience targeting.
It's important to note that OTT Media Platform Data Scraping should be conducted ethically and in compliance with the terms of service and legal regulations governing the platforms. Respect user privacy and adhere to data protection guidelines while scraping and handling the extracted data.
What Types Of Data Can Be Scraped From OTT Media Platforms?
