51st State Master Set. So, I have kind of a weird history with this. I was a big fan of the original 51st State from 2010, but the challenging iconography and other physical design elements held it back from catching on with my friends (not unreasonably, I should add). When I heard there was going to be a new, graphically updated version, I pre-ordered it right away. Later on in the process I found out that it was also going to be updated to use game systems similar to Imperial Settlers - which made me sad, because I'm actually not that big a fan of Imperial Settlers (it's OK). Crucially, they dropped the "rule of 3" from the original - each scoring building (which allowed you to trade, say, 2 gas for 3VP) could only be used 3 times total before being useless. This was great because it forced you to keep turning over your tableau - you couldn't just get lucky, draw a powerful combo early, then slap it down and ride it to victory the way you can sometimes in Imperial Settlers. You had to keep adapting throughout the game. Without the rule of 3, I thought 51st State would lose a lot. So it lingered on the shelf unplayed for a year, until we finally broke it out today - and I actually quite enjoyed it! Although identifiably an Imperial Settlers variant, It's quite mechanically different in a number of (IMO) positive ways. I also have to admit the theming on Imperial Settlers, which is pretty much themelessly evoking cheesy 90s video games, is too meta for me. "Generic retro civilization computer game" has been done to death now, and it wasn't very interesting in the first place. 51st State's post-apocalyptic vibe is actually much more compelling - it does themes of rebuilding and recycling and improvising in interesting ways, and it doesn't feel like just a generic tableau-builder the way Imperial Settlers does. Anyway, this was a very pleasant surprise, I quite enjoyed it and look forward to playing it some more.
