Tobi Zenko REDESIGN

Slight change to Tobi's hairstyle, but the shape of it remains the same. I'm pretty satisfied with his design for the most part. But his alternate timeline counterparts need a redesign (more about them another time).

Also, Tobi & Marron are wearing Krillin's "New Turtle School" gi.

A simplistic design like this felt like a possible evolution of the Kame gi. What I don't have drawn is the jacket part. It's meant to resemble the Wing Chun uniform I remember seeing Bruce Lee wear in his films since I've always been a fan of him.

(Maybe the white one is a Tai Chi uniform?)

But that's the inspiration for the design I have in mind for the New Kame School gi. Instead of taking the blue undershirt off when its time to fight seriously, Tobi & Marron open up or take off their jackets.

They're celebrities. People are going to find celebrities attractive, especially if these are people they see on screens and billboards every day. If you pick up the nearest magazine you find you're probably going to find Junko Enoshima in it. And maybe you should consider that those "weirdos" who are walking up to Hajime are simply fans that want to greet him. We've watched these people fight through hell, cry, laugh, and find hope along the way. Of course we are going to get attached to them, especially to those of us who have been keeping up with them for a long time now. The 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai is a master class in setup and payoff.

We all know how tournament arcs go. The final round is going to be the arc's hero versus the arc's villain. Everything before that point exists to provide character work and spectacle moments, but there's rarely any ambiguity about where the tournament is going.

Poorly done, the lead-in matches can end up feeling like filler. Like the story's just spinning its wheels. Decently done, they give characters a chance to stand in a spotlight they wouldn't normally receive by the rest of the story, and let them shine in individual moments even if they aren't going the distance.

But a well-written tournament uses those lead-in matches to lay groundwork, planting seeds that will eventually sprout into the finale.

The final match of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai comes in hot. This tournament had previously been a sports movie arc about the rival schools of Kame-senryu or Turtle Style and Tsuru-senryu or Crane Style.

Ten thought he'd vanquished the star athlete of Kame-senryu, Yamcha, in the opening round. In fact, he rigged the ballots to ensure that he could face Yamcha right off the bat. But things took a turn when he found out that one of Yamcha's juniors, holy shit, killed his master's brother, a legendary assassin and a top-tier master of Tsuru-senryu.

It's at this point that the story stops being about the school rivalry. Instead, it becomes a mission of avenging Tsuru-senryu's lost honor by vanquishing Taopaipai's killer. Ten isn't playing by tournament rules anymore; He wants to kill Goku in the ring.

Only. He doesn't, really. Locked in the fight of his life with Goku, Ten falls in love with the competitive atmosphere itself. He loses interest in avenging Taopaipai and becomes more enthralled by the prospect of simply proving his worth in the tournament itself.

It's at this point that the fight stops being about either of those things it was before. It's no longer a contest between Kame-senryu and Tsuru-senryu. Neither is it about revenge.

It's just about these two martial artists standing on the world stage, ambitions blazing as they reach for the lofty title of Strongest Under the Heavens. The only thing that matters anymore is the pure sport of it.

And what a sport it is. This fight is an incredible summation of everything that led into it. Throughout the arc, we get to watch Goku and Ten take each others' measure. We see the special care and attention they're paying to each others' matches, and we watch them grow from their own.

In Goku's semifinal match with Krillin, we see him break out an incredible vanishing technique.

Special attention is drawn to Ten's ability to follow Goku's movements, as he explains to the reader exactly what Goku is doing.

Setup.

By introducing this move here, we're ready for its faster-paced return in the final round - and we're already primed for Ten to counter it.

Payoff.

But Ten wasn't the only one paying attention during the semifinals. When Ten fought the Muten-Roshi in his guise of Jackie Chun, Goku got to see Ten's signature move: The Taiyoken or Solar Flare.

Incidentally, he refers to this as a Shin Tsuru-senryu or "New Crane School" technique, implying this isn't part of the standard Tsuru-senryu playbook; He created it on his own.

As with Goku's semifinal, getting to see Ten's semifinal gives Goku a leg up on the competition, as this advance preview of Ten's signature move gives him a chance to glean both how it works and how to counter it. We get to see Goku and Krillin discuss the limitations of Ten's technique.

Setup.

This gives Goku the forewarning he needs to be ready for this technique when Ten breaks it out in their match.

Turning Ten's attempt to capitalize on Goku's blindness and vulnerability, into an opening for a counterattack - through a little bit of sneaky-handed filching.

Payoff.

Neither of these guys is winning this tournament with the same tricks that carried them through the semifinal, that's for damn sure. But it's not only their matches that play into this finale. Krillin's fight in the quarterfinals with Chiaotzu - the only real fight Chiaotzu's ever had in this entire series - serves to establish Chiaotzu's psychic abilities.

Setup.

Chiaotzu can telekinetically bind a person, leaving them helpless to attack. It doesn't win him the match, but it briefly allows Tsuru-sennin to rig the finals in Ten's favor.

Payoff.

This ability, set up in the quarterfinals, is what gives Ten the opportunity to realize he doesn't feel right winning like this, and to choose fair competition and sportsmanship instead.

It's easy to keep focus on how Goku and Ten are feeling about this move, because we've already been introduced to the ability itself. What is happening here doesn't need to be freshly explained, allowing the pace of the fight to be maintained.

Speaking of strange abilities we don't need explained, the preliminary rounds of the tournament, typically an easy wash, have one character introduced with surprising gravitas.

In the preliminaries, Goku faces King Chapa. One P, Viz. It's Chapa-O, named for the Italian dish chapati 'cause Toriyama likes his name puns.

Despite not happening on the world stage, this match is nonetheless treated as a serious tournament fight. Goku still wins the fight handily, but not before Chapa has a chance to show off his signature technique: The Hasshuken or 8-Armed Fist.

Hasshuken is a speed technique, built around moving your arms so quickly that it blurs visibility and creates the illusion that you have eight. Chapa hits Goku with this technique, but we see that Goku's fast enough to see through his moves and counter them anyway.

Setup.

In the finals, once he gets serious about competition, Tenshinhan unveils another esoteric ability: Shiyoken, the Four-Armed Fist.

No optical illusion this time. Tenshinhan's devised an ability to physically sprout two extra arms to enhance his fighting.

But four arms are for suckers. Hasshuken can give you eight.

Payoff.

We've already seen Goku face down and defeat Hasshuken and we know he's a quick learner. So it's no surprise when he whips out the technique on his own, much later in the tournament, to counter Ten's Shiyoken.

Nearly every move of this final match stands on the shoulders of the material that came before it - Right down to the final blow. By this point, it's been long established that Ten and Chiaotzu can fly.

It may seem odd these days when everyone who is anyone has mastered it, but the levitation technique Bukujutsu was originally a signature technique for Tsuru-senryu. Everyone else cribbed it off of Ten.

They stole his Bukujutsu/Levitation. They stole his Taiyoken/Solar Flare. Fucking thieves, the lot of Kame-senryu. Turtles be stealin', yo.

In his desperation to win the finals, this becomes Ten's final ace in the hole. By destroying the tournament stage itself so there's nowhere to stand that isn't out-of-bounds, Ten can remain suspended in levitation and force Goku into a ringout.

The best Goku can do is take a huge jump, but that will only carry him so far. He needs to know Ten down to the ground before the ticking clock of gravity ends this match. He only has one option to reach with.

But it's useless.

During Ten's quarterfinal fight with Yamcha, it's established that Ten has the ability to cancel and reflect the Kamehameha.

Setup

This was the first official fight of the tournament. It's a piece of context that has sat on the characters' shoulders for everything up to this point, and we even see Goku attempt a Kamehameha earlier in the final round before thinking better of it.

Payoff (Kinda)

He remembers that Ten can cancel his Kamehameha. It would be a waste of his energy to try for it. Instead, he saves his strength for the longer fight ahead.

This, in turn, is what makes it so suspenseful when Goku is forced to resort to it in this very last exchange. Having no other option, Goku is forced to fall back on a move that cannot work. The outcome of the tournament now depends on an attack proven to fail at the very start.

And then it hits.

Payoff (For Real). Deflect that, asshole.

Though Ten still wins the tournament by sheer dumb luck of Goku hitting the ground a second before he did, this is nonetheless a thrilling solution to a problem created by the opening match of the arc.

This is what the entire final round of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai is: A series of payoffs fired off in rapid succession to plot points and abilities and ideas that had been sprinkled throughout the entire arc to that point. A fast-paced frenzy of a fight that rarely needs to stop to explain itself because everything was already layered out in advance.

This is top-tier tournament writing, and anyone seeking to write a tournament arc would do well to study what it has to teach.

Puzzleship role-reversal AU following Egyptian boy Atem who transfered schools to Japan because of his father's job. As a son of a busy, high political figure, Atem constantly changes schools and have very little friends aside from Mahad and Mana who are the children of his father's close colleagues. (The other kids also got scared of him because his father is a powerful figure / only attempting to befriend him to gain benefits).

Atem grew up with strict lessons and pressure. Always have to be the best in everything. He always tried to maintain an aloof, cool-headed, always reliable leader persona, but in truth he's very shy and anxious. His only comfort was playing games, but it's very lonely to play alone (and he's not so fond of online games) (Mahad and Mana play with him but Mahad is older and doesn't have time to play childish games with him and Mana has other interests)

Atem had changed schools a lot, but it's the first time he moved overseas. He didn't know anyone in Japan and only spoke the language a limited amount (even tho his lessons back in Egypt always drilled the language into his brain but with no one to talk to it's pretty hard).

He instantly became The Talk at Domino High as "The cute/cool foreign transfer student from Egypt" and he didn't really like the attention. He became closed-off and only interact with his classmates a minimal amount, even tho he had always wanted to make more friends. (Now people thought he got a Mean Look, because of the frown 😂). Anzu was the first person who greeted him in good-faith because she purely wanted to get to know him and make him feel accepted in class (but he always brushed her off too). Jou and Honda are still part of The Delinquents(TM) and Jou just hated Atem's guts because he thought Atem is "snobby little Rich Kid". Kaiba is still Kaiba and he just Doesn't Care much.

One day, Atem got some free time and decided to visit a nearby game store: Kame Game. It's kind-of old and there's more board games and puzzle games instead of the ever-popular digital ones. But this is how Atem loves his games. (And there's always a weekly little tournament where kids can play Card Games against each other. Very Fun!).

When he came in, the store was empty and dark, but the store still has the "Open" sign at the door so Atem just kept going. There sits an open wooden box with silver carvings on one of the small table where kids play. Atem was intrigued to get closer and he saw some... wooden blocks. Maybe a Puzzle? Atem loves solving puzzles. Because this is just left alone on the play table, it means he can try it right? So he tried Solving it...

And as if the Puzzle itself was calling and urging him to Solve it... he's assembling it very smoothly. He can finally see that it's forming some kind of pendant, just a few more blocks but Grandpa Sugoroku suddenly appears and surprised him 😂 Gramps saw him with the Puzzle/Pendant and you know I really like the idea of him Knowing More than he lets on, he told Atem that this Puzzle was an artifact from The Gods' Time and whoever solved it will get a Wish come true. He urged Atem to take it home and solve it in peace. It might help you in some way, he told him.

So Atem brought The Puzzle home, thinking how that grampa was kind of Weird, but he's also intrigued with the Puzzle- so he's going to solve it. And a wish coming true doesn't sound bad at all...

Atem had solved it Perfectly, and it was a pendant. But nothing happens. Ha! What wish... Atem thought it's probably just Sugoroku's attempt to make him come back to the store and buy something. Atem was kind of Sad tho. But nevermind that, he got a new pendant now, so he wear it immediately and went to sleep. (Having strange Dreams about Storms and a boy with white robes and wearing The Pendant Facing Them... but he's not going to dwell with it- he must be Tired)

Yugi adopting Jaden part 2

Start - next

Yugi and Solomon talk the whole night. Planning out how they can do this and the practicality of it. (Where will Jaden sleep? Do they have the money? Can Yugi continue going to college?) a lot of hard conversations but Yugi is determined.

Solomon is so proud of his grandson but also sad in that Yugi is only 18. He’s always had so much pressure on him, and now that he’s free to be a young adult he is choosing to take in a child. Solomon couldn’t be more proud but this is a sacrifice. One Yugi is willing choosing to make.

Yugi gets all the paper work in order. He’s looked up everything he needs and knows this is going to be a long process, but before he can start it there is someone he needs to talk to.

He goes to the orphanage the next day and tells them that he wants to adopt. And they laugh at him at first, he is very young. Yugi shakes it off and continues, “I’d like to adopt Jaden Yuki.” No one is laughing now. They are looking at him like a man walking towards his death and Yugi is so curious to know why that is the reaction this gets. But he can’t ask because they are moving so fast.

Jaden is dragged in by one of the adults. They’re dragging the poor boy, his arm caught in a far to tight grip, and Yugi wants nothing more than to take Jaden far away from here. But he still needs to do something.

Jaden looks up at him and his expression goes from fear to excitement. “Yugi!” The adults get mad at him telling him to ‘be respectful’ and call him ‘Mr. Mouto.’

Yugi tells them to leave it and walks over to Jaden. He kneels down in front of the boy and tells him. “Jaden I have a question for you. And you can tell me no. But I want to adopt you. Are you okay with that?” Yugi wants this to be Jaden’s choice.

The boy doesn’t even think about it. He launches himself into Yugi sobbing, “yes! Please!” And Yugi just scoops the boy up holding him close. He stand up with Jaden still in his arms, the boys little arms wrapped around his neck and his little face buried in Yugi’s neck. He moves to sign whatever papers they need. He asks how long it will be before he can take Jaden with him, there’s a process to this, and no matter how much he wants to take Jaden and run he knows he has to do this the right way.

But the orphanage says he can take him today. When Yugi asks about home visits or check ins they tell him “not to worry.” Or “ there won’t be any of those.” And okay, either this is the worst orphanage ever or they really want to be rude of Jaden.

Yugi takes Jaden back upstairs to his little cubby of a room. (It’s so small, Yugi can’t imagine a child living here) and gather all of Jaden’s possessions. There aren’t main to grab. Then Yugi scoops his boy back up and walks out of that orphanage forever. He doesn’t put Jaden down again until they reach Domino. (Holding him through the walk through town and the train ride)

They make their way to Kame Game shop where Solomon is able to meet his new greatgrandson. And instantly the old man is spoiling the little boy rotten. They give him Yugi’s mom’s room. After Yugi graduated high school his mom moved out to live with his dad in America, so the room is open. Jaden is thrilled to have his own space.

And so they settle the little boy in for the next few days. It is in the first night that Yugi learns that Jaden has horrific nightmares. Things the little boy can’t remember when he wakes up. But both the spirits of Silent Magician and Dark Magician Girl are telling Yugi that his dreams have to do with the spirit world. Which is weird because Jaden can’t see spirits, and has no magic signature. It’s almost like he’s been cut off from that realm…

Jaden wakes up screaming the first night and Yugi goes to check on him. Jaden asks if Yugi will stay with him. He feels safe when Yugi is around, and how can Yugi refuse after that. This is how it goes for the first few nights.

Yugi eventually gets tired of having more questions than answers and looks into Jaden’s past. But it’s empty. His medical records, school records, even the boys birth certificate is missing the parents names. Yugi has no idea how that is even possible. So he goes to the only person who might be able to help him find some answers.

He leaves Jaden with Solomon tell them he’ll be back in a few hours, and he heads to Kaiba Corp. if anyone can find Jaden’s files it’s the Kaiba brothers.

But when he gets there Mokuba is in a panic. It’s been a month since Seto launched himself into the afterlife and he’s still not back yet.

Yugi arrives and is brought to Mokuba. He’s about to ask for help when Mokuba cuts him off. “I was just about to send for you. You have to help me Yugi. Seto wanted to duel the Pharaoh again so he built this machine that lets him travel between dimensions. But he left a month ago and he’s not back yet. I’ve got this new way to get him but I can’t go after him because I don’t have a connection to ancient Egypt. But you do. Please you have to help me find Seto!”

And Yugi is going through it. What do you mean. Seto built a machine to go duel Atem again? A week ago he would have left in that moment, but he can’t now. He’s got Jaden. If he doesn’t come back what happens to Jaden?

Mokuba can see Yugi hesitating and he begs him again. “Please I can’t lose my brother.” And Yugi knows he’s going, but he needs to take care of Jaden first.

“I’ll go Mokuba but I need you to do something for me while I’m gone.” Yugi explains already making a mental plan.

“Anything!” Mokuba is so releaved that Yugi is going after Seto. But he is a little surprised at Yugi’s request. It’s not like Yugi to ask for favors in return, though he did come here on his own, he probable needed something and that’s why he arrived at Kaiba Corp.

Yugi explains Jaden and their situation. “You see I adopted a four year old named Jaden Yuki.” Mokuba’s world goes side ways. Yugi adopted a kid? Why?

“Why?” Mokuba can’t help but ask. And he kinda wishes he didn’t once Yugi explains the situation to him. The knows exactly how poorly and orphanage can treat the kids it houses. He’s so amazed that Yugi adopted a kid. When Yugi asks him to look into Jaden’s past. That all the records are blocked, sealed, or destroyed. Mokuba is all over it. “You can count on me!”

Yugi knows he can but there is something else he has to do before he leaves. “Thank you Mokuba. Give me a few hours to make sure Jaden is taken care of, then I’ll be ready to go.” Mokuba agrees easily. As much as he wants Seto back he knows this is important to. He even offers to have Jaden stay with him at Kaiba Corp while Yugi is away. Yugi takes him up in the offer but wants some one else with them. If Jaden is drawling the attention of the spirit world in his dreams, Yugi doesn’t want to leave him without having and experiences duelist there to watch over his son.

So he calls Joey.

“Hey pal! Long time no see. What you go to college and become to good for your old friend Wheeler?” Yugi can hear the joking tone Joey is putting forward, but he can also hear the hurt in his voice and it’s now that he realizes that he’s hasn’t called Joey since he started meeting Jaden in the park. The little boy really absorbed Yugi’s world and he hasn’t told anyone about him.

Yugi feels awful. It’s not like him to leave behind a friend. With Téa in America and Tristian working at his father’s business he knows Joey had to be feeling as alone as he has. But he’s been so distracted by school and Jaden he hasn’t reach out in almost two months. “Joey I’m really sorry that I haven’t called you but I need your help. Can you meet me at the game shop?”

“I’ll be there in ten minutes.” Joey doesn’t ask any follow up questions. If Yugi needs him, he’ll be there. Sure their relationship has been experiencing some growing pains with Yugi in college and Joey trying to make it as a pro-duelist, but Yugi is still his best friend.

Yugi runs home, Joey hung up right after he told him he’d be there so Yugi didn’t get to tell him he wasn’t home. Yugi gets home to see Joey waiting outside for him.

“Yugi what’s up? Gramps made me wait outside and everything. Whats going on?” Joey moves towards Yugi as soon as he sees him. Whatever this was, it was big.

When he showed up, Gramps had asked him if he had talked to Yugi. When Joey responded with ‘ya he asked me to meet him here.’ Gramps had looked at him and asked ‘so you know?’ Joey responding with ‘know what?’ Probably wasn’t his best response, considering Gramps had immediately chased him out of the store.

He was worried. He had thought all the fate of the world crap was behind them. But if Yugi was being targeted again Joey would stand by his side, there’s no doubt about it

“Joey I-” Yugi has no idea how to explain what’s going on. He takes a deep breath. “It’s a long story.”

“I’ve got time.” Joey’s ready for anything. His mind is run through the options. Evil cult, already beat one. Ancient culture come to destroy them, done that twice. Kaiba being a jerk, when isn’t he. Whatever it is they can handle it.

“Alright well it all started about 2 months ago.” Yugi proceeds to tell Joey about how he met Jaden. How people treated him. How Yugi started spending time with the kid. How he started to care and eventually adopted the kid.

“You adopted him?!” Joey had been just as upset as Yugi was upon hearing how people treated the little boy. But he was shocked by Yugi’s decision. It was a big decision after all. Huge! But Joey couldn’t see his little buddy doing anything different, and he knows that Yugi thought this decision out way more than he would have. So there is only one thing he can say. “Well what are we standing outside for? Can I meet him?”

Yugi had been ready for any number of lectures. He’s 18 and he just adopted a kid. Joey could have named any number of reasons why that was a bad idea. But instead Joey just wanted to meet Yugi’s son. He was so luck to have such a good best friend.

🩹The three wounds.

Although there are many things to say about Yamcha, today my attention goes to one of the most curious topics about him: the scars.

Dragon Ball, ch. 166, The Reunion.

This is the first image of our good ol' Yamcha with his new look and... I really have to admit it: while I loved so much his so many pre-23rd Tenkaichi Tournament styles, I cannot deny that the Yamcha we see at the end of OG Dragon Ball and throughout DBZ gains a stratospheric appeal. His more mature face and the triumphant return of his long hair, here tied back in a cool ponytail, make a big impression for sure, but it's certainly his two new facial markings that especially make the difference.

Let's say it together: Yamcha is the pretty boy of the gang. He's got flowing black hair, he has lots of charisma, a strong sense of humor, and on top of that, he's got grazy techniques that visually tear apart more famous ones. Sounds just like... A wasted character, doesn't it? As I said before, that is not the question I want to address today. So...

...How did Yamcha get his scars?

I'm not quite sure if there is an official explanation on this, and if there is I apologize for my lack of one. In any case, I'd like to lay out my personal theory. Actually it's not a big deal at all, it is not a fanciful story that I made up to enrich Yamcha's life. It is simply the result of a logical evaluation and a long, long observation in the field.

As we know, at the end of The Great Demon King Piccolo Arc, Yamcha and others start to train hard for three long years in preparation for the new budokai.

We don't know exactly how our heroes trained, whether they spent time together, and specifically whether Yamcha returned to the city occasionally to be with Bulma and Puar, but from his girlfriend's words we can assume that he only devoted himself to training.

This is not the first time he has done it. Fortunately! In fact, in the 21th Tournament Arc, we can see him away from the city, moving through the woods like a real wolf to enhance even more of his most famous technique, the Rōgafūfūken. Then, when the Red Ribbon adventure ends, Yamcha notices how Goku's strength has increased overwhelmingly, so he decides to move to the Kame House to become a full-fledged pupil of the Turtle School. In this case, Bulma visited him whenever she could (or wanted to), but this time is different. Yamcha now carries with him two major defeats in the quarterfinals, plus a strong sense of helplessness during the The Great Demon King Piccolo Arc because of his broken leg. He cannot and will not stay in the shadows again and again, although we could not help but appreciate his every effort. That is why this time it is necessary for him to make his mark in the martial arts world. And indeed Yamcha succeeds.

Although he loses again in the quarterfinals, the twist he gives us is one of the most beautiful of the whole tournament.

His new technique, the Sōkidan, leaves even God himself speechless. I will undoubtedly talk about this wonderful move on another occasion. Right now what I want to point out is simply the lethal effect this has on the opponent.

As we can see, the Sōkidan is an extremely elegant and elaborate technique that can destroy, stun and distract the opponent depending on the will of the user. Unfortunately, we don't see it often, but thanks to DBZ fillers, some movies and the videogames we can get an idea of how devastating it can be.

Requiring full ki control, consequently this maneuverable ball suggests how extremely difficult it is to handle.

Now let's go back again and let's try to imagine a Yamcha who is tired of losing and wants to amaze everyone in the next Budokai. So let's try to imagine a Yamcha who returns to the woods, sits down by a lake, under the moon, and somewhat like Tien does, whom he has come to know and esteem until then, he too begins to focus and finally explore his own soul until then only devoted to the teenage love with Bulma and those little big satisfactions in his various fights. After all, he has always been one of the strongest. We must not forget that before the tournaments there are the preliminaries.

Anyway, we are still in the woods. Yamcha has opened the palm of his hand and slowly the night seems less dark as a small and seemingly harmless orb begins to float by his concentration. Maybe he is on the right track. A small grin appears on his face... After all, he has always been a bit of a swagger and that is also why we like him. But then, I don't know whether that same night or in the following days, this still somewhat wild sphere goes out of his control. It literally gets out of his hands, and although it is sad to think about, it turns on him and crashes right into his face, cutting him twice: on his right eye and on his left cheek. Of course, not in an overly direct way. I imagine more of a smear wound, or something like that, just like what happens to the mysterious Shen.

In this scene, Yamcha certainly has much more mastery, but I have no doubt that during his solitary training he had a hard time precisely because of the dangerousness of this technique that requires significant spiritual control.

Finally, one last detail I would like to dwell on is the reaction Yamcha must have had at the sight of his new face. Throughout the story, he has never hidden the fact that he is quite vain and conscious of his own beauty. And how can you blame him?! Well, the first time we see him despairing over his poor ruined face is when Goku knocks his tooth out. We are at the beginning of our great Akira Toriyama-signed adventure.

Here Yamcha was a lonely 16-year-old boy who was afraid of beautiful girls. A terrible curse since his greatest desire was (is) to get married. I assume that seeing himself ugly after losing his tooth must have only heightened his frustration! Instead, when he gets the two scars, Yamcha's age ranges from twenty to twenty-three. He has grown, he has changed, he has a girlfriend and even a fanclub, but most importantly he has greater self-awareness. In my humble opinion, he has not despaired so much. Not like a drama queen, at least. After all, if it is true that it was the Sōkidan that ruined his manly face, his new consciousness must surely have suggested to him that it was worth it. In the bottom of my heart I hope he has also realized that he has increased not only his power but also his sex appeal... but hey! that is my very personal opinion. 😸

So, this is what I have always thought, or rather, what I like to think about the origin of his scars. Many assume that it was the clash with some wolves, and even this is interesting, but I don't think that with the power level he reached he could be bitten so easily by an animal he knows so well... For me, it was its own strength. It suits his will to persist even at the cost of losing his life.

You know, I'm sadly happy that it's him who has the scarred face. I really don't know but... Something tells me that if his face hadn't had those two marks, Yamcha would have been even further forgotten. I can't explain it but I feel like it's like this.

However, gettin those scars must have been painful, I realize, but after all... Yamcha is someone who lives with pain all the time. That's why the title of this topic refers to three wounds, not two. In the end... We all agree that Yamcha's biggest scar is in his heart, right?

McDanno ficlet, (1200 word count) Prompt: Fake Dating....with a twist because I love possessive/jealous Steve 

Danny approached the table at Kamekona’s food truck with a file in hand. He motioned for Kame for his usual order while dropping the file onto the table. 

“What’s that?” Kono asked while Steve was the one who picked it up and opened it. 

Danny sighed and ran a hand through his hair before slumping into the corner seat, “A favor. One of my firefighter friends asked me to pretend to be his boyfriend while his parents visit for the weekend.”

“And you agreed?” Steve asked, voice low and cold as he read what was in the file. He frowned at how little information there was. 

“I owed him heavily for some brownie points he got me with Grace when he convinced his boss to take a fire truck to school near the end of the summer,” Danny explained but by the looks on the team’s faces, he had to supply more. “He only recently came out to his parents last year. He used being new to the island as his excuse but now that he’s more settled, every time he called home it was the usual question. He got tired of it and in panic and desperation he blurted out he was seeing someone. When they asked for details…he picked me as his boyfriend.”

“And you’re just…going to go along with it?” Steve demanded, clearly not happy with this at all. He told himself he just hated blackmail on principle but more so when someone tried to blackmail someone on his team! Especially Danny!

“Like I said, he’s helped me look cool in front of Grace and her friends and the school. But a lie can get out of hand easily enough when not everyone is in the loop. His parents will probably want to do touristy things. I can probably use work as an excuse once or so but I’ll have to hang out with them and a lot of the places I can think of taking them are places you guys have shown me. So in case you see me around, holding hands or kissing a guy, I don’t want you getting the wrong idea or being confused or whatever. So…in here are the basics. Timeline, info about him, our ‘relationship’, etcetera. “ 

Steve slammed the file closed and pushed it away from himself. Standing up, he grabbed Danny’s arm and pulled him up too. “Walk with me.” 

Danny didn’t have a choice and followed suit until they had some privacy. Steve not letting Danny go until they were in between the Camaro and his Silverado. 

“What the hell, Danny?” 

“I’m going to need you to be slightly more specific, Steven.” 

“Why are you going on with this charade? I mean…are you really going to date this guy?”   

“What? No! I’m just doing a friend a favor.”

“Doing a friend a favor is helping them move their stuff when they get a new place. It’s picking up their dry cleaning because they got too much stuff going on during the day and they need their suit for later in the evening. This is….he’s asking you to hold his hand and kiss him!” 

“It’s just for a weekend, Steve. Not even a full weekend. I got work and Grace as an excuse as to why I can’t make it.” Seeing Steve start with a rebuttal, Danny continued first, “Which…will be an issue his parents will probably pick up on. They’ll note that I’m older, have been married and divorced, with a kid and a dangerous job with insane hours. A few weeks after they’re home he’ll call to tell them we broke up because the differences became too big. We’ve thought this out…so…please….if you see me out and about, just…go with it?” 

Steve didn’t have any arguments to keep throwing at Danny. Not without having it thrown back in his face as to why it’s bothering him so much. His face probably looks like he’s bitten to the sourest of lemons. He storms back to the table, downs his beer just as Danny comes back and Kame sets his food in front of him. 

Steve orders another beer and drinks it while he sulks and stares intently at Danny.

 The loud banging startled Danny from his sleep. He grabs the clock on the nightstand and tries to decipher the time until his vision adjusts and tells him it’s almost 3:30 in the morning. Nothing good ever came at late night calls like this. Though he checks his cell phone and it’s now fully charged but doesn’t have any missed calls or messages. Still, he grabs his gun as he makes his way to the door. 

Looking through the peephole he sees it’s Steve. He doesn’t dare sigh in relief yet as he opens the door just as Steve was about to bang on it again. 

“What? What’s going on!” Danny demanded as he tried to erase the remaining pull of sleep. 

“You were willing to let people think you were dating a man.” 

Danny stills and just stares at Steve. The other’s words registering in his mind but it does little to solve the confusion. 

He opens the door wider so Steve could come and they could continue this, whatever this is, inside. Placing his gun down on the furniture near the door, he then rubs his face with both hands. As awake as he may now be, he was still very tired. 

“It’s 3:30, Steven.” 

“I know!” Steve was pacing back and forth like a caged animal. 

Danny could see the cogs turning in his mind at a furious speed and now he was beginning to worry. But Steve’s never appeared to have had issues with same sex couples, so this had to be deeper…right? Danny couldn’t jump to conclusions. ”I was doing a friend a favor, Steve.”

At the reminder, Steve seemed to recoil. It at least stopped him in his tracks and gave Danny a heated look he didn’t know how to decipher. 

“Weekend’s over now.”

“Steve, what is this about? Why couldn’t this have waited until morning?”

“I waited as long as I could! Don’t you think I tried? Someone actually called the police because they thought some crack head was trying to break in…”

“So…you’re in a mood. At my house. At 3:30 in the morning. Upset about my being bi?”

“No!” The insulted look made Danny feel somewhat better. If only because whatever fears began to grow about some internalized homophobia causing troubles for them…it wasn’t the right answer. “It’s not about you also liking men! It’s…you…”

“Me what?” 

The coil that Steve seemed to have wound up caused him to finally spring into action. He pressed Danny against the door and kissed him! Actions always speaking louder than words and the last couple of days Steve couldn’t find any of the words he needed to convey his feelings to Danny. 

The kiss was possessive and full of the jealousy he’s felt since he learned of Danny’s favor to his friend. When the need to breathe finally presented itself, he pulled back but just barely. Their breaths mingling as they panted to catch them. 

“It’s you…not being with me.”

Correction about the email! Son Goku could only carry people who are pure of heart on his cloud! That's why Chi-Chi, the two broads he gets for Kame Sennin, good Ranchi, Arale w/babies, Nam, Upa, Uub, Son Gohan and Son Gotenks can ride it! I think that's all of them. Kuririn and Bulma have to hold onto Son Goku to ride it. How Kame Sennin came to own it, IDK! I'm surprised the five elements correspond to musical notes! That's the first I've heard of that! Do Chinese schoolchildren learn about any of this stuff in History class? I think we learned some basic viking facts in elementary school, but it's been 18 years since I was last there, so I don't know what the two new curricula have decided. Thank you for the email! I am surprised Guanyin has to come and save them so often, but new book means new trials, and maybe she won't be there forever? Time will show!

Niyakap ko si Chae at Gisele habang tinatapik ang ulo nila ng biglang may kumaltok sa batok ko.

Now, he lives just a block away from our house, pero hindi na kami gaanong close dahil sa tagal naming hindi nakita. Pero close pa rin siya kay Kuya Jake. Since then, I liked him, and I still do now. Para siyang naging default crush ko. Every time I experience a heartbreak or minor inconvenience in a relationship, my heart runs back to him. Kasabay ko si Lee Know lumabas as usual since parehas kami ng course at kailangan namin ummattend sa seminar na 'to. Pero dahil diyan, palagi kaming napag-kakamalang may something. Siya yung tipo na para bang lahat nasa kanya na. I bet he will treat me better than that douche. Kaka-ahon ko lang sa break-up pero may tinititgnan nanaman ako. I mean, masisisi mo ba ako? Nakaka-akit talaga yung tingin niya. Siguro, kung siya yung minahal ko, wala na akong ibang hihingin.

Sobrang lalim ng iniisip ko na hindi ko napansin na tinititigan ko pala si Sunghoon ng deretsahan at naka-awang ang labi. SHET! NAKA TINGIN DIN SIYA! GAANO AKO KA-TAGAL NAKATINGIN SA KANYA?!

Initsa ko ang ulo ko sa kabilang direksiyon sa sobrang hiya. Bahagyang napatawa si Sunghoon. Nakita din ata ng mga seatmates niya. Tumalon nalang kaya ako sa bangin (para lang iyong sagipin AY CORNY).

Habang tinatago ko ang mukha ko sa likod ng binder, tinignan ko ang gc namin na sumasabog sa chat. Gagi, nakita ni Lee Know. Chismoso panaman 'yan.

Pag-ring ng bell ay agad akong tumayo perO hindi ako agad umalis para hindi masyadong awkward.

Teka...lumalapit ba siya..? LORD! PUWEDE BA 'TO?! Napagtanto ko na mas awkward pala kapag naiwan kaming dalawa, kaya binilisan ko ang pag-lakad. Kaso nagsisiksikan ang mga estudyante sa may pinto, kahit anong bilis ko, hindi rin ako makakaraan. Palapit na siya! Lord, kayo na ang bahala sa'kin.

"Miss Sim?" dahan-dahan akong lumingon. Shet, lalong umawkward.

Yugi stares out the window, watching the pouring rain as he listens to the buzz of his classmates around him. Talks of weekend plans, of parties and karaoke and dancing, of movie nights, of bowling and roller skating. Of invitations never extended to him, only ever overheard.

Yugi wonders what it might be like. To spend the weekend having fun with friends, making memories and trying new things together. Of playing games with someone other than his grandpa.

Of course, he'll be spending this weekend as he has every other since starting college, and for many weekends before: working the game shop and playing games alone in his room. With a sigh, he takes his backpack from the floor beside his desk and removes an intricate, ancient golden box. He may as well use this time before class starts to work on his biggest project. It's been 8 years, but--

"maybe today will be the day i finally solve the millennium puzzle," Yugi says under his breath.

No sooner has he removed the lid when the small sarcophagus is snatched from the desk before him, making Yugi jump.

"Are you talking to yourself?? What a creep," Tristan Taylor jeers, holding the golden box far above Yugi's head as the smaller man leaps from his seat.

"please--!! give that back, it's my treasure!!" Yugi pleads. As he tries unsuccessfully to jump for the relic, another bully takes it from Tristan's hands.

"What is this, a jewelry box?? Only a girl would care about something like that," the blond taunts. Yugi feels his face go red. "You want it back, man up, gimme all you got and take then."

Yugi sinks into himself, suddenly feeling smaller than ever. He hugs his arms across his chest. "i... i hate fighting. please, joey, just give it back!!!"

The bully only laughs at him as he takes a peek at the contents inside the box. "What is this shit anyway? Looks dumb." With that, he turns the box upside down, and the small, golden pieces rain down over Yugi's spikey head. Laughing as the smaller man drops to his knees to frantically collect the pieces, Joey tosses the box to the side. "Let's go, Tristan."

It's hard, it hurts, but Yugi manages to collect the pieces without crying. He'll wait until he walks home for that, when the rain will hide his tears.

That night, as he sits at his desk at home, the pieces of the Puzzle seem to click together more easily than ever. And for a moment, his heart begins to swell with nervous excitement. Is this it? He's never gotten this far before. If he twists this piece half a turn, then adds this other piece, then slides that piece over....

He tries not to let himself get his hopes up too much. But another piece fits, and the frame of the pyramid comes together.

His fingers tremble.

There's only one final piece.

He's done it! He's actually solved the--

Yugi's blood runs cold as he reaches into the golden box for the last piece, his fingers finding only the smooth bottom of the golden sarcophagus.

no...

He grabs the box, turns it upside down, but nothing falls out. Had he missed a piece when Joey had dumped them back at the school? No no no. Then that would mean the Puzzle could never be solved. No, he was sure that he had searched every inch of the floor, over and over, ensuring he hadn't forgotten any of the shimmering, golden pieces. He leaps up from his desk, tearing apart every inch of his room in search of the missing piece to no avail.

Finally, Yugi's hope gives out. He collapses to his knees in the middle of his room, surrounded by the mess he created in his frantic search, and cries.

Yugi must have floated through the weekend in a daze of sorrow, because the next thing he knows, it's Monday. He doesn't want to go to class today. Why does it matter? His major is undeclared. Uncertain. Unfinished. Just like the Puzzle sitting on his desk at home.

The rain is still pouring.

Usually, Yugi walks the short distance from the Kame game shop to the community college he attends, but today he doesn't have the energy. His feet feel heavy as lead as he climbs onto the public bus.

As Yugi seeks a spot to stand amongst the crowd of passengers, he finds his way toward the back of the bus where he spots a familiar face. Tomoya Hanasaki, one of the few people as quiet and unpopular as himself on campus. Maybe he should say hi? If there's anyone he has a chance of befriending at all, surely this other outcast is a safe bet...?

But before he finds his courage, he notices the discomfort on Hanasaki's bespectacled face. Then he recognizes the larger man sitting beside him, a notorious bully from their college by the name of Sozoji. Yugi tries to listen, but he can't hear their conversation over the other passengers, the hum of the bus, and the loud music blasting from the headphones hanging around Sozoji's thick neck.

Should he help...?

What could he possibly do...? He's no larger or more threatening than Hanasaki after all.

In the end, Yugi decides to turn his back, to mind his own business. The last thing he wants is to make anything worse for anyone. And if he just makes himself invisible, maybe he won't attract any of whatever cruelty Sozoji is planning.

He doesn't think he can take another beating, not with his heart so incomplete.

The next day, as Yugi sits alone in English class, he can't help but notice that Hanasaki's seat is empty. His stomach sinks, a feeling of guilt slowly filling his chest. As he stares out the window, he listens to the chatter of his classmates around him.

"--shattered ear drums--"

"--total hearing loss--"

"I heard he tried to kill himself--"

Yugi sinks down in his seat. It's not like he could have done anything, right...? If he had spoken up, it would just be him in the hospital now...

The rest of the day goes by in a blur.

The weeks that follow seem to be filled with nothing but more unfortunate events. Yugi stares at the empty seat once occupied by his biggest crush, a girl named Téa with dreams of being a dancer. Abducted from her waitress job by an escaped prisoner several days ago, her body had just been found that morning.

Yugi only feels numb.

The weekend comes around again, and once more, Yugi spends it alone in his room. He hasn't had the energy to work the shop these days. Letting his own grandpa down too, now.

Yugi lies on his bed, eyes unfocused towards the single window over his desk as he tries not to think of the misfortunes of the previous month. But as his eyes drift to the Millennium Puzzle, sitting on his desk, forever unfinished without its final piece, he can't help the thoughts that creep into his mind.

He's never believed in things like magic. But his grandpa's ominous warnings of curses and Shadow Games come to mind. Is that what this is? Did he anger the ancient Egyptian gods when he lost that final piece? Is this the Pharaoh's Curse, taking out everyone around him before finally coming for the man who handled the ancient relic so carelessly?

He wishes the curse would just take him. Or at least, hurt the people who deserve it. The bullies that hit him and taunted him.

What if he had spent those 8 years getting stronger?

Instead of wishing on some stupid Puzzle?

Yugi can't take it anymore. He jumps up from his bed, ready to smash the relic back into its many pieces. He snatches the incomplete Puzzle from his desk, only to hiss in pain and shake his burning fingers as the artifact falls to the carpeted floor below.

Why...?

Why would the Puzzle burn him...?

Why does he smell so much smoke....?

Why isn't Joey saving him, like--

Yugi's eyes go wide as they stare down at the Puzzle, haphazardly lying at his feet.

The Puzzle piece isn't the only thing that's missing, Yugi realizes. His friends, his allies, the voice inside his heart.

This isn't right.

This isn't how his story goes.

Heart pounding in his chest, Yugi reaches for the Puzzle, only to find himself falling. Through the floor, dragged by a chain around his ankle into the depths of the Domino City bay.

but it was my wrist, Yugi thinks as the world grows darker and darker. and it's okay. because joey will save me.

joey will save me.

and joey's sister will save him.

and then we'll save the kaibas.

and it will all be okay.

Yugi opens his mouth to take a deep breath, trusting the words he repeats in his mind. It will all be okay. It will all be okay.

And it is.

No water fills his lungs, only oxygen. His red-violet eyes flutter open to a blue sky overhead, lush grass all around him. He reaches for the Millennium Puzzle around his neck and frowns. So that's really missing. And so is the voice inside his soul.

But it's different. Though it's quiet, his heart doesn't feel empty. Not the way it did when Duke's father had shattered it to pieces. Even without the relic hanging from his neck, Yugi can tell that he isn't alone.

He sits up in the grass and crosses his legs, tries to clear his thoughts and get his bearings. Whatever nightmare he had just escaped, it was only that:

a nightmare.

Yugi knits his brows together. He can't come up with a logical explanation how he got here, to this clearing in these peaceful woods. Without the Puzzle to cling to, he presses a hand over his heart and closes his eyes, trying to focus on that feeling that tells him he isn't alone. When he tries to call out for his other self, he's met by something unexpected inside his chest.

How did he get here?

Last he remembers, he and his friends had been searching for the Kaiba Brothers. They had followed the coordinates that Mokuba had posted, appearing on a Kaiba Corporation branded aircraft carrier in the middle of the Pacific. They had been escorted deeper into the massive ship at gunpoint, ushered by mechanical guards into a bright, white room. And then...?

Feelings of rage, of anger, of resentment. Of sorrow. Of fear and insecurity.

Yugi's fingers curl into a fist, tight against his heart as he tries to calm the storm.

"hold on other me," he pleads aloud. "i'm going to find you. i promise i'm going to find you."

Story:

Yugi is the kid who somehow gets roped into helping at the concession stand by a social studies teacher at the next chilly football game. Eventually keeps going. Makes friends with his bully Joey over shared band crushing on the Seinen Corp cousins. Meets flirty Yami at the stand who keeps coming to his window. Joey and Kaiba have weird angry chemistry. Yugi Gets things running better than before, until the TitanFestTM meltdown, where Yami asks him out, he says yes too fast, it’s a dare, he’s humiliated and begins skipping. Instead of angry chemistry, joey actually freaks the fuck out on the next stand from how much harder it is without Yugi. Kaiba comes help out, Joey understands him and they’re legit into each other. Kaiba calls out Yugi skipping over a small embarrassment to Joey, who calls out pussy Yami to Kaiba. Kaiba’s impressed, Joey not so much, so they decide to knock sense into Yami and Yugi together. Joey calls out Yugi for leaving him hanging, Yugi and him commiserate about Yami etc, they make the next concession stand, Joey sends him home early. Kaiba sends Yami to the Kame Game shop to encourage him to branch away from his parents' expectations and to meet Yugi on his early dismissal. They surprise each other, and from this new insight from Kaiba/Joey and surprise meeting, they makeup, decide to get together.

General idea:

Yugi is the kid who somehow gets roped into helping at the concession stand by a social studies teacher at the next chilly football game. Gets things running better than before, until the TitanFestTM meltdown. Low expectations of self and from literally everyone. Exasperated 24/7.

Yami is the charismatic band kid who plays the tuba, despite his diminutive frame, who always buys from Yugi’s window. Funny and sweet, always surrounded by friends, Yugi just enjoys seeing him around, crushes on him a little bit, and is just a hairball jealous of him. Has high expectations literally everywhere.

Joey is the fast talking coffee barista of the stands known by most of the adult volunteers and band. Relates to Yugi’s crush on one of the band kids, and creates the first genuine friendship he has ( nerve wracking at first). Originally a bully of Yugi’s, because of a projection of lacking masculinity (or being gay) that pisses his old man off, but once he sees Yugi’s coolness under the pressure of the waves he lets up. Eventually he accepts himself and learns from Yugi things that are unhealthy he’s learned from his old man. Has low expectations from parents.

Kaiba is the brash rich kid and the talk of the school (high expectations from parents). Joey admires that. Thinks it’s super hot that he just tells classmates and teachers off with his calm reason. Sees through Kaiba’s vermeer of not caring and sees a socially awkward kid with a bad home life and relates to that.

Potential char backstory:

Yami is on a balancing act, trying to keep his skills, charisma, grades, and rich boy syndrome under control to remain in good graces with the rest of his band mates, mainly because he’s worried it’s seen as favoritism when he gets good chair placement. Especially when Kaiba’s not so considerate. Kinda has beef with Kaiba because of this.

Yugi is just an anxious mess with a bullying problem and frankly uses obscure ancient egyptian strategy games as a coping mechanism (oddly specific, he knows). Also he’s just a little insecure about his height, feels infantilized. Wishes he could just put himself out there.

Kaiba, as the cousin of Yami, his parents hold weight in the company, and is often rumoured to be paying his way into good spots. Seen as a spoiled rich kid with no manners. In reality, he really just doesn’t have manners and is just super entitled lol (socially awkward due to a quiet and strict family). Also he plays well despite being absent often, though the paying rumours are due to him messing up rehearsals later in the season that others see as should have been learned by now. Has beef with Yami for being too people pleasing (especially when Kaiba’s given up).

[1] "Fucking Timberwolves! We hated you guys." "We hated ourselves." was such a fun challenge to translate because Tagalog needs so many words to do a reflexive that it was never going to be translated word-for-word. The joke is supposed to happen quickly, and translating it like "Ayaw rin namin sa mga sarili namin" made it lose its punch.

Inb4 "kami rin", that was an option but it's too ambiguous. If Emma said "Ayaw namin sa inyo" and Pablo said "Kami rin," the first assumption the audience would make is that he's saying "We hated you too." Which is not what he's saying.

So we have to do sense-for-sense. So instead I'm making Emma swear just for punctuation/filler, which she does a lot anyway, but Pablo takes her literally and thinks she's actually calling Timberwolves gago (first joke), and then agrees (second joke). It's like if she's said "Damn, you guys are the enemy," and he replied "Yeah, we're really damned." He does it again later with puta, because Paul does it in English: "No shit!" "Yes shit, yeah!" I think it's so neurodivergent of him, especially in conversation with someone he has a crush on.

[2] Brigadoon has been replaced with Jesus Christ Superstar because Brigadoon isn't very well-known where I am and specifically a local theatre group did several productions of JCS but I didn't like them because they weren't actually singing, just lip-syncing. If this ever gets staged and the director wants to change it back to Brigadoon or use a different play then I'll change it, but rn it is the play we're making fun of

[3] He has to drop the title of the show here, so I added another line, because the title in Tagalog is "Bakit Ayaw Niyang Kumanta?" (Why Doesn't He Want To Sing?). Why is the title different? Because that's how I ended up translating the chorus of the first song. I do hate that a bit of foreshadowing is lost (he didn't like musicals, because by the end he does) but maybe figuring out the question can be similarly fun for the audience as well. Translation is loss and compromise.

SHUFFLE! will be a new anime I start up, and along with it will soon come the 13 episode AIR. Jun Maeda's prototype for CLANNAD, Kanon, would be the most likely to take its place afterwards.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works draws to a close, soon to be replaced by The Case Files Of Lord El Meloi II.

Konosuba will be taking over from Re:ZERO (talk about whiplash!), and once its done, its place will be taken by Black Cat.

Symphogear XV will finish off the Symphogear series, and once that's done, K-On!! will be taking its place.

I'm curious what Tenshinhan's fighting style is beyond general weirdness lol. I always interpreted it as a "showing off" sort of style back in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, with most of his moves being visually impressive and/or intended to instill despair in his opponent, but then you have his kikōhō, a move that damages the self for greater strength...

Tenshinhan is fucking weird is what he is.

I mean that sincerely. Fitting for a man who walks in with three eyes like that's totally normal and no one ever speaks of it, Tenshinhan's style comes straight from the realm of the bizarre and esoteric. He's an outside-the-box challenger to test the limits of Goku's counter-fighting.

He is the drunken boxer. The fighting game character that plays utterly differently from all other characters, making them hard to learn but unpredictable when mastered. Ten forges his own way through martial arts with off-the-wall tricks and game-changing shenanigans.

It's just. Easy to forget how weird he is because the rest of the cast have thoroughly cannibalized his style. Kame-senryu are a bunch of fucking thieves.

This eye-searing image is the most normal thing Ten has in his repertoire.

Ten and Chiaotzu lay out that they're going to be... unlike anything we've seen before right from the get-go, when they use psychic powers to rig the matches.

Already, it's clear that we're about to see some weird shit. Both of these characters are built on the martial arts philosophy of "Okay what the hell even is that, how did you even bring laser eyes to a knife fight?"

Ten in particular is a formidable martial artist.

But as early as his first match, the oddball nature of his abilities start to settle in.

Okay, so Ten can just Nope any Kamehameha thrown at him. Sure. Guess that's a thing now. New rule, guys: No more Kamehamehas.

But you also kinda get it. Like. Tsuru-senryu is the rival school to Kame-senryu, and the Kamehameha is the signature technique of Kame-senryu. So it makes sense that they'd develop countermeasures for the Kamehameha.

Also, they can levitate.

Well, that's going to make scoring a ringout fucking hard, isn't it? One of the two ways you win in this tournament is by making your opponent fall in the grass outside the ring, and these fuckers can fly.

That's unfair, is what that is. They don't even need to use helicopter tail shenanigans or a well-aimed Kamehameha for propulsion to do it. They can just decide that they don't feel like being rung out today.

This is the first technique that doesn't seem so special today because everybody cannibalized their Bukujutsu. But at the time, it was unique. Even Taopaipai, their idol, couldn't fly. He got around by the delightfully comical method of throwing something really hard and then jumping on it and being taken for a ride.

Taopaipai was doing Breath of the Wild rock transit decades before it was cool.

As the tournament picks up, Chiaotzu foreshadows the bizarre nature of the fights ahead when he reveals his ultimate technique: Binding his opponent in place with psychic powers so they can't defend themselves.

That's. Not. Really. A martial art? Even by the incredibly loose definitions already on display in this manga. It's closer to General Blue's paralyzing glare. And there's a lot more of that to come.

Further included in Ten's repertoire of Weird Shit (TM) is his third eye, which serves a vital function in combat until everyone starts ki sensing and it ceases to be relevant.

Ten has enhanced perception, allowing him to see things that others can't. This is notably distinct from being able to sense people by following their ki signatures. A distinction the Muten-Roshi helpfully lays out by stating he can't see Goku but can sense him just before Ten confirms he can still see him.

When Goku meets Popo, we'll have entered the realm where the limitations of human eyesight can no longer keep up with the speeds of the characters, and learning to perceive through ki sensing becomes necessary.

But right now, Ten's enhanced perception lends him a number of edges over other martial artists that have to rely on eyesight to track their foes. Advantages such as thwarting this particular invisibility technique of Goku's.

Or piercing the illusion of the Zanzoken/Afterimage speed technique.

As an aside, I love the way both of those moments draw attention to Ten's two normal eyes looking one direction while his third looks the other. It's such an eerie but effective way of conveying the idea that he can see more than a normal man.

Ten and Chiaotzu play by different rules than everyone else.

Sometimes he has four arms. That's life, man. Again, they make a point of showing us what this looks like as a speed technique:

Both to set up Goku's counter for this and also so that we understand how meaningful it is that Ten is not doing that. Chapa and later Goku perform Hasshuken, moving their arms so fast it creates the illusion of eight. Ten physically sprouted two extra arms. He can just. Like. Shapeshift, I guess. He's a flying shapeshifter who sees faster than everyone because of his three eyes and he hangs out with a telekinetic doll.

Also he can flashbang his opponents as a clincher.

This is another move that seems mundane now because everyone stole it from him. They took his Bukujutsu/Levitation and they took his Taiyoken/Solar Flare. But it's another data point on the list of ways Ten's such a weird and complicated opponent to try and fight.

Even by the standards of Tsuru-senryu, he's weird. Taopaipai didn't do half of this shit. Ten specifically refers to the Taiyoken/Solar Flare as a New Tsuru-senryu technique, which implies that he created it himself.

Which makes me wonder just how much of his moveset is actually part of the Tsuru-senryu curriculum and how much is Ten. Just. Being weird.

Notably, at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Ten shows up with something even more absolutely freakish than the Shiyoken/Four-Armed Fist.

Shishin no Ken also known in English as the Multiform Technique is another departure from your illusory speed techniques, in that Ten splits his body into four bodies. How does he do that? Fuck you, that's how. This is the evolution of both his enhanced perception and his ability to sprout extra arms - And, in being so, a demonstration of how Goku has left him behind.

It's an admittedly creative solution to the problem that Goku, following his training with Popo, can move too fast for even his three eyes to follow. But now he has twelve eyes.

TWELVE. That's as many as four Tens! And that's terrible.

The Shishin no Ken was another weird-ass technique from a weird-ass martial artist, serving a practical function in enhancing Ten's unique characteristics to compensate for Goku's now godly abilities.

But it was ultimately undone by a catastrophic vulnerability, which is the reason nobody ever tried this shit again.

Splitting into multiple copies of yourself turns you into a team of useless scrubs who can't throw a punch to save your life. It's a bad technique and was written off immediately after this fight, never to be seen again.

...except in anime filler, where everyone stole that from Tenshinhan too.

You guys were both at the tournament when Goku pointed out that this technique makes you throw punches like slow, limp noodles! Come on, guys! These characters would not even try this shit.

But I digress.

Not to be outdone, Chiaotzu invented a technique where he blows himself up and dies ineffectually.

Tenshinhan never let him fight another person again for the rest of his life. This cost him fighting privileges. Straight up left him with the non-combatants during the Android arc. You are done, Chiaotzu.

Look, just because their shit is weird doesn't mean it's all good.

Of course, we can't talk about Ten without talking about the Big Gun. His ultimate technique. The thing he's known for better than anything else, especially by people who never watched or read the material prior to Raditz.

The Kikoho/Tri-Beam is not a Tsuru-senryu technique or a Kame-senryu technique. It's not even a Tenshinhan original. It's a forbidden technique known to both schools but, at least in the Muten-Roshi's opinion, inappropriate to ever pass on. Tenshinhan's going to use it to win at recreational sports.

And people complain about Korra entering the Avatar State to win a race. If Goku broke out the Genki-Dama/Spirit Bomb to punch Krillin out of the ring, Kaio would have his ass for that....

The Kikoho is, so far as we know, the most powerful individual technique in Dragon Ball in terms of the gulf between the wielder's power and the destructive force output by their technique. It punches far above Ten's weight class. Whether that means:

Managing to fuck up Nappa pretty bad.

Holding back Semi-Perfect Cell.

Or even dissipating a shot from Super Buutenks, the Kikoho is in a league of power far beyond anything Tenshinhan would be capable of himself. This technique lends Ten the ability to show up and be occasionally useful even after the power scales leave him far behind.

At least, for a short time.

Sorry, man. You cannot fight at this level. But at least you got that killer shot in.

Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu are wild cards. Not as characters, mind you, but as martial artists. Their greatest strength is their unpredictability. You never know what they're going to pull out of their pocket next, which for a time made Ten in particular into a fun and engaging rival for the ever-analytical Son Goku.

My Shs Life

"Hindi naman maganda sa school na 'yan, sa iba ka na lang mag enroll" I often hear them say that. But why should I listen? I'm the one who's studying, not them. You know, truth be told, I wasn't really supposed to enroll at PHCM, but I enrolled really late, and this was the only school still open for enrollment. Besides, I don't have a choice. It's either I study here or I won't study at all.

At first, I didn't quite vibe with the regulations at PHCM, maybe because I wasn't used to them? Especially the grading system. That was the real game changer. Coming from a public school in junior high, I got used to getting into honors just by hitting a 90 average. But here, it's not just about having 90 average, you need a consistent above 85 grades in every subject to stay in honors. At first, I was really scared because I was used to being in honors. I was afraid I might lose that status in senior high school. "Huwag mo kaming i disappoint" "Sayo na lang kami umaasa" Those are the words I always hear. The words that make me so scared that I might not be able to do what they want. So, I promised myself I'd give my best shot, work even harder, and be more diligent in my studies to achieve what I wanted.

I also struggled to adjust to the environment here at first. I didn't quickly make friends with my classmates. I didn't immediately find my circle. But as time went on, life at PHCM became enjoyable. I found a group I could share moments of joy and even sorrow with. Friends who were always there when you needed them. I also realized that our section, 11 - Quezon, was the happiest section in HUMSS during our Grade 11. I came to understand that within our section, it's not about one upping each other. Sure, there's competition, but it's healthy. We all support each other, ensuring that no one gets left behind. We all aim to succeed together in the direction we want to go.

My Grade 11 life became incredibly fulfilling. But it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows. Of course, we faced challenges. The toughest challenge my classmates and I encountered was being separated into different sections. We tried everything to convince the teachers to keep us as a block section, but we couldn't do anything. All we could do was accept the reality.

Now that I'm in Grade 12, I'll admit, I'm happier. Not that my Grade 11 life wasn't happy, but now, meeting new people and having a new environment, life feels incredibly joyful. This made me realize that I'm adaptable. I'm capable of adjusting to new environments and situations. Honestly, Grade 12 Sapphire is similar to Grade 11 Quezon. It's about healthy competition. We're just happy, no one upping each other. Even though the guys at the back can be super annoying sometimes, it doesn't affect our section's solidness (though they can be a headache sometimes). But truth be told, we wouldn't be Sapphire without them! LMAO.

Apart from that, my SHS life became more enjoyable. Thanks to the guy I met back in grade 11, who's been by my side ever since, making life sweeter every single day.

From Grade 11 until now, I've been an honor student. It's pretty cool, you know? At first, I was really scared because of this school's grading system, but it's satisfying to know that despite their high standards, I managed to make it to the honors list.

Another reason why I aim for honors is that I know I need high grades for the field I want to pursue: law. That's what I want to become. But we're not wealthy, so for now, I'll pursue psychology. But I plan to make psychology a pre-law course because, until now, I can't let go of my dream of becoming a lawyer. That's why I chose HUMSS; I want to prepare myself for the things I know I'll be doing in the future.

I'm happy. Extremely happy. I thought I'd become an introvert in SHS because that's how I was in Grade 9-10 when classes went online. I became so shy, avoiding interactions and almost never went out. I almost deleted all my social media accounts. I stopped posting, which used to be a regular thing for me. So, I've really grown during my senior high school years.

And that's my Senior High School life in a nutshell. A journey of challenges, growth, and discovering my resilience in adapting to change.

(I'm working on a Krillin B-Day picture, but it's taking a while to finish... I'm might miss the actual celebration day, but I wanted to share this cute next-gen/AU idea for now~)

-I always thought that out of everybody, Krillin was pretty good at being personable with crowds of "regular people" and comfortable when it comes to interacting with new people. I also thought that as he got older, he cared a lot about making a difference in small ways (not just BIG planet-saving stuff, we've got a whole Goku for that), especially when he thinks about how hard it was for himself and his friends when they were younger...

So! He kind of takes over being a martial arts teacher as a new Turtle Master (not so much a hermit), with a training school closer to towns/cities, and it also functions as a shelter for people with no home, and a safe place for run-away kids. While he's mostly passing on the Kame training tradition, Mr Satan gives him an "endorsement", making Krillin known as "The Champ's Friend!", so he kinda has a similar hero following...except, his rep is REAL (also, Tien and Yamcha hang out and help with training as well~)

-Marron grows up to be ironically taller than both her parents. Also, she, Bra, and Pan get to be REAL FIGHTERS who are strong, and have cool adventures, thank you very much (it would also just be very amusing to me if, as teenagers, Trunks and Goten were the ones who stress about normal-teenager-problems like being popular etc. they're living a high school AU, the others are Magical Girls who Punch haha. OK, in seriousness, they all have adventures together, it's just funny for it have some silliness in there)

-As an adult, she eventually has twins (since it runs in her family, on her mom's side). They both look like tiny-Krillins, but with hair (in different styles, to help tell them apart). Their names are Almond and Hazel! (I'm not especially invested in the other parent, but if I had to pick somebody, I'd actually think her and Uub could be cute. we don't get to know him really well, but he seems very soft-spoken yet serious, and Marron has an easy-going attitude; they would just get along, and start a relationship without drama or awkwardness, they simply click~)
