Nike Running Ekiden Pack

Each year from late fall until winter, Japan celebrates one of its most exciting sports moments: Ekiden season. The long-distance running relays push the limits of performance and require the lightest and fastest racing footwear available. The latest Nike Running Ekiden Pack is designed to honor the heritage of the competition while inspiring the next generation of racers. 

The Ekiden Pack is part of Nike’s Global Express Lane strategy, which creates products in an expedited timeline through the design filters of local culture, insights and trends, presenting collections that connect authentically to communities worldwide.

To curate the Ekiden Pack, the Nike design teams drew on the brand's deep roots in running and history of producing innovative products for runners of all skill levels. Whether you’re going for a jog or toeing the starting line, the Ekiden Pack features footwear and apparel for every day training and race day. 

The pack includes five footwear models, the AlphaFly 2, VaporFly 3, Zoom Fly 5, Pegasus 40 and Rival Fly 3, all in pink and volt colors, two hues that Nike and Ekiden racers have made synonymous with speed. The collection is embellished with graphics that harken back to the origins of the Ekiden race and the majestic landscapes found across the most popular courses.

The Ekiden Pack apparel includes an array of tees and a packable Nike Windrunner jacket. In addition to design elements seen on the footwear, the apparel features a stripe inspired by tasuki or the sash that is used in place of the relay baton in Ekiden races.

The Nike Running Ekiden Pack releases for Nike Members in Japan December 1 and will be available nationwide December 8 at select retailers. The pack launches globally this winter.

Nike Introduces the EK Umoja Collection

People often say that running is an individual sport. Nike athlete Eliud Kipchoge views it as a means to create community and connection. Throughout his 20 years competing at the highest level of the sport, Kipchoge and Nike have propelled their shared purpose to rethink human potential and move the world forward through running. That forward momentum continues in the new EK Umoja Collection, built on the ethos of the world’s greatest marathoner.

“‘Umoja’ stands for unity in my native Swahili,” explains Kipchoge. “This collection represents the work done together as a running family and community.” The collection includes five Nike running footwear silhouettes: the Nike Alphafly 2, Nike Vaporfly 3, Nike Zoom Fly 5, Pegasus 40 and Nike Victory track spike. In apparel, the line includes the Nike Windrunner jacket, Nike Rise 365 tee, Nike Stride 7-inch short and a Nike Dri-FIT tee.

Each item in the collection features colors and graphics that pay homage to the start of Kipchoge’s elite racing career: his first World Championship in the 5,000 meters in Paris in 2003. The reoccurring color red represents Kipchoge’s proud Kenyan heritage and nods to the Nike Kenya kit he wore when he won his first gold medal. The sock liners in the collection footwear, as well as select apparel items, display the official time of his 2003 5,000-meter win: 12:52.79. A graphic print in Kipchoge’s handwriting reading “No Human is Limited” — his personal mantra — can be found on the medial midsole of each shoe and on each apparel item. The Dri-FIT tee features a quote that guides Kipchoge’s optimistic approach to life: “Let us imagine that we are in a garden. Let us focus on the flowers and not the weeds.”

Kipchoge’s accomplishments as an athlete are unparalleled. Through Nike’s Breaking2 project, Kipchoge became the first — and only — person to run a marathon in under two hours. He also owns the world record for the marathon, has won 10 World Marathon Major titles and is a four-time Olympian, medaling in each games he’s competed in since Athens 2004.

Still, his elite status has not separated him from the running community. Kipchoge strives to use his fame to bring more people into running, to show them the benefits the sport gives and the deep bonds it can create. Together, Nike and Kipchoge are committed to realizing his dream to make this world a running world. As he puts it, “A running world is a healthy world. A running world is a peaceful world. Thursday was super rough thanks to a late night of volleyball so after a very full day of work followed by acupuncture (where I took a nap), then a walk with the neighbor friend, where I was able to snap this gorgeous photo!, I was in bed by 9:30 p.m.  

On Friday I planned to get out of work by 3 p.m. so I could hit up happy hour with Kevin and his classmates after their exam but I didn’t get out of work till 4 and we got to the bar by 5.  We’d never been to this bar before and we thoroughly enjoyed it!  The atmosphere was chill and family friendly with lots of tables and damn tasty food.  I had a blackberry pear cider, an Irish car bomb and two margaritas.  Given that I didn’t eat much prior to this Kevin was very insistent on getting us way too much food which we promptly devoured.  They had these fried pimento cheese balls that I was LIVING for.  Obviously, this wasn’t a keto night which made me all the more surprised when I lost almost 2 pounds overnight!  Although, I don’t expect it to stick, it was definitely encouraging to continue to live life and be social!  Another night where I was in bed by 9 p.m.! :)  I’m sure loving this trend.  

Today, after a lovely morning of lounging in bed I finally got up around noon to make breakfast and we were out the door by 3:30 p.m. to run some errands.  I wore my new shirt and this is probably the first/only stripe shirt I’ve ever owned.  I like it much better than I anticipated!!  We went to the local running store where I bought new walking shoes since the pair I got last July have a genuine hole in the bottom after toughing out roughly 600 miles and countless volleyball games.  The new pair (Nike Zoom Fly Fk) didn’t come in the light grey like I wanted but oh well.  I guess I’ll have black shoes for awhile.  

Next stop was Skinnie’s Records and I was honestly pretty anxious to go.  Almost all the reviews said the owner was an ass who didn’t tolerate newbies and talked down to women.  As a noob myself (and female!) I was scared of being shamed for getting into something new and/or acting like a poser.  I’ve dealt with a lot of this kind of shame in my past and it’s kept me from doing many things or wearing certain things because I didn’t want to be seen as someone trying to fit in where I ‘didn’t belong” or otherwise.  Thanks to a lot of self talk and motivational posts on Tumblr I’ve mostly grown out of that phase of being worried what other people think but walking into this situation with a known criticizer I was worried.  After the first few minutes of feeling awfully out of place and all up in my head I quickly found myself digging into crates of soundtracks and I started to forget my insecurities.  The owner came out and told me that I could stand on the milk crate next to my feet so I didn’t have to so awkwardly sort through records.  About 15 minutes later he comes back out and notices I’m holding the 1964 Fantasia album and asks me if I’m a teacher (I guess I did look the part).  We got to talking and he was actually really pleasant.  He would come and go making small talk and at the end I asked if he had any Dick Dale and he showed me the three he had. I never once felt like I was made to feel out of place and I am definitely encouraged to come back again soon.  Although, after buying about 9 albums I think I’ll wait for another paycheck or two.  

The weather was an absolutely gorgeous 78 degrees so I had my windows open all day while I was running about being productive cleaning and doing laundry.  A delightful Saturday, indeed!
