i've talked about it before but the way sonic boom highlights the "they're just a bunch of kids" aspect of sonic characters is immaculate and something you don't get to see too often in mainline at least to the same degree. the whole plot of rise of lyric revolves around "kids fuck around and are forced to find out". sonic is genuinely In Shock at the very beginning when lyric uses his spin attack against him, because he's a smug and arrogant kid who's genuinely never faced opposition to that degree in his life and it Fucks Him Up on the spot. the way the whole gang acts around the wild shit they're dealing with is remarkably lighthearted and casual and their conversations highlight the particular kind of immaturity a group of teens like them would have, even when the world around them is in grave danger and they're taking the responsibility of protecting it. the beef they have with one another is childish and meaningless in the grand scheme of things and i adore it in the context of the game. they call themselves heroes and consider themselves such with such naive lightheartedness, they take it for granted in some ways, they've never had to grapple with anything more dangerous than eggman prior to setting lyric free and it shows when the going gets tough and things aren't as easy and simple as they've been in the past. i am obsessed. they are just kids with superpowers. they are detached from reality but they're also just some kids. they act like children in the face of the end of the world. mainline could never

that time when scarlet and violet was released around the same time as sonic frontiers and we were all talking about the bugs and bad framerate in sv but sonic fans were going “HA!!! everyone has to apologize to sonic for giving him shit for 06!! cause now theres a WORSE example and we can shit on pikachu for having a bad game!!!” and like look i actually did like 06 so this isnt coming from someone who hates sonic and wants the franchise to fail or whatever, but its so clear to me that we are never gonna escape toxic workplace culture and crunch in video game development because like, what’s happened to 06 and scarlet/violet arent unique phenomenons specific to those companies, they were the result of crunch culture and i really feel like having fandom wars over that is pointless. this can happen to literally any franchise you are not unique. sonic 06 is not retroactively “good” because something that “deserves” to be hated more finally dropped, yknow? both games suffer from the same problem and nothing will change or get fixed if we ignore that

no ones gonna know what im talking abt bc this show is fresh on my mind not urs but. whatever anyway ok sonic boom is a silly slice of life sitcom before it is anything nuanced ik but...im getting so crazyy over this underlying subplot where sonic and amy are trying to figure out what they are to each other in the bg.

amy gauging his reactions by inviting him to all these lunches n picnics and acting a few steps away from a girlfriend to him by giving him extra tlc+someone to banter w in a playful-partner-in-crime way until sonic confuses himself into acting like her boyfriend by feeling the need to step up as her emotional crutch when she’s upset, not bc hes good w feelings (hes really not), but bc he recognises himself as the only option for amy to go to out of the pack and is always the one urging the rest to try something for her. even tho hes bad at it lol...just thinking abt the way he scans her sadly as she keeps bawling her eyes out and resigns to the fact that hes about to get all deep and personal w her to help comfort her despite it going against his too-cool-to-feel mentality (it’s played for laughs bc the thing shes sad abt is a bee bot she grew attached to but sh anyway). all that until theyr at a point where he just starts spontaneously calling amy to check up on her, complaining to her abt how miserable a time hes having out or dropping everything to buy her some groceries bc she called in the middle of a race w the guys..like its the most natural thing ever.. y did they make them so domestic anyway im going thru it

i remember hearing that the writers for the sonic boom tv show said that shadow was a very difficult character to write because sega is so picky about how he should be portrayed and thats why they saved him for season finale episodes only. so he could still be in the show but they wouldnt have to go back and forth with sega about what they can and cant do with him as much as they would have if he was a main character. anyway maybe thats part of the reason theres no alternate shadows in sonic prime. because sega was annoying about it and the writers didnt feel like dealing with it lmao

anyway i was pretty excited to just have something after months of not getting anything, so even if it was short and still a teaser rather than an actual trailer, i really liked it!! the visuals, animation, and fight choreography are sick and i already ADORE deven mack as sonic <3 ive also always been a sucker for stories about multiple universes so im just really looking forward to prime in general

though im going to go off on a bit of a tangent here so dont read if you dont want to hear this: ive been growing weary of shadow discourse for a while but this teaser was really the catalyst to me realizing just how much i fucking hate all the arguments that surround his character! id be lying if i said that certain peoples reactions werent a major factor contributing to the already shitty week i was having. inb4 im not trying to disrespect anyone or their opinions whatever they may be so please dont take this as a personal attack but i truly despise how sonic and shadow cant fight for 5 seconds on screen (with no context!) without this widespread panic that hes just going to be a pointless rival. you know, even though he and sonic have always fought? because their personalities clash? because they have different methods of handling problems that arise? theyve BEEN fighting aklsdjflas the only time shadow fought sonic just to spite him was in boom and boom!shadow does not count. say what you want about boom!shadow but he does. not. count. other medias like sonic x and idw all had them fight with actual stakes involved which is perfectly fine and normal and how conflict usually works

at this point i just want sega to come out and explain their entire agenda with shadow post-06 is (as well as how they see him in comparison to everything before that) like i know thats not gonna happen and obviously it wont stop people from disagreeing with the direction theyve taken him in (and again its fine if they do), but at least everyone could finally be on the same page. because with the way things currently are, theres no way someone can give their opinion on how they perceive shadows character (no matter what it is or how much evidence they have to back it up) without being called media illiterate by people who have just as easily disputable interpretations. i personally would love to talk extensively about how i see him and explain why that is the case but i wont because i dont want annoying people setting off my anxiety by accusing me of not understanding the fictional hedgehog <333
