One of the things that I really loved about the Fairmont Orchid was the array of activities that were available. There was never a moment when I felt bored or like there was nothing to do. There are plenty of beach umbrellas and chairs available, so you can always find a spot in the shade. If you want extra privacy, you can rent an Oceanside cabana. You receive a cooler of refreshments and snacks along with cold treats throughout the day!

Staying at the Fairmont Orchid also gives you access to one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The highlight of my trip was seeing sea turtles when we went snorkeling in the lagoon.

Sprouting

The month of August was about sprouting into my new home, the ever continuing evolution of myself, leaning into my inner world and connection  with myself, and the love that exists within myself.  Passionately exploring and opening up to the possibility of what exists on the other side of something that might seem really scary, life changing, even paralyzing. Trusting in a new beginning. A new awakening. And what a brand new breath of air, light, and environment can instill in onself. 

I explored the island with Nala taking time to recenter and rejuvenate by getting into the natural world, away from others, and close to the ocean and spirit of the island. I headed down south to the southernmost tip of the island, known as Southpoint, where Polynesians first landed on the Hawaiian islands. I stayed at an epic airbnb with a 180 degree view of the ocean in a town called Naalehu. I then traveled up the coast to the Captain Cook area and visited the magical Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Nala and I enjoyed beautiful times on a few beaches overlooking the most gorgeous and other worldly Kealakekua Bay!  In August, I also spent time traveling up north of Kona  heading to the north side of the island along the windy Kohala coast, feeling utterly alive and connected to all the elements. Nala and I were lucky enough to hike down into the most stunning and sacred Polulu valley, frolic in the river, prance in the bright green fairy looking forest, and stare out at the infinite and invigorating waves breaking on the rugged coast, reflecting light that danced back and forth from valley floor to ocean side. I also explored the town of Waimea, full of endless rolling green pastures which extended on for forever leading into the grandiose expansive heights of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. I then drove the north east coast home back to Hilo, stunned by all the aliveness of the island and the tropical magic that exists on the Hamakua coast. Back in Hilo town, I began to surf at Honoli’i beach! A huge dream of mine for living in Hawai’i was to be able to surf all the time and develop this incredible passion of mine! When I looked at the Big Island to live, I looked at all the surf spots and asked friends about the surf! That was a huge motivating factor in the desire to live in Hawaii! So I was so excited to finally be able to surf here!!! It had been on my mind everyday since I moved here. I started surfing by borrowing my friend’s board. The first day in the water moved me to almost tears. I jumped in the crystal clear Pacific with views of the green Big Island and flowing river behind me and sea turtles immediately were popping up everywhere! I was in heaven! I literally was in the happiest place I could ever imagine! Surfing with sea turtles?!! What more could a girl ask for!!!  So many locals there were so kind and encouraging and helpful giving my friends and me tips and tricks and even pushes down the line up! Within that week a friendly local offered to sell me one of his 8 ft wavestorms! I was on cloud 9!!!! Finally had my own board so I could surf whenever I wanted! I was in heaven surfing on the gorgeous days at Honoli’i and immediately started developing my surfing skills again! 

I had exciting realizations about what I was experiencing and witnessing as a program guide holding a safe space and container for these adolescents to feel their emotions and gain more  control of their inner world and responses. It was so incredibly uplifting to see the process of their emotional growth and regulation after the pain they endured as sensitive beings trying to have their needs met and dealing with the external environments they were in and around in the best way they could. It gave me hope in the future of humanity seeing this desire to feel, process, and heal in this generation of adolescents.

The Xenolith Flow These barren rocks have sat on this site since 1802, when they arrived here after pouring out of Hualalai, one of the volcanoes that compose the main island of Hawaii.

The Big Island of Hawaii is made of 5 volcanoes that today sit above the Pacific Ocean; Mauna Loa and Kilauea are the most active, Mauna Kea and Kohala are older and less active or extinct, and Hualalai is in the middle, between those groups. Hawaiian volcanoes are most active as they’re growing; once they get to about the size of Mauna Loa they slow down and erupt less. Mauna Loa right now erupts once every decade or few decades, Kilauea erupted non-stop for 3 and a half decades, and Hualalai erupts once every few centuries. This lava flow came out of Hualalai and made its way towards the North coast of the Big Island, destroying a few villages in the process. Today, the Kona airport actually is built on part of a lobe of this lava flow – you can see in the distance the difference in darkness between this younger flow and the older, weathered rock it covered. This flow is interesting from a geologic perspective since it is loaded with xenoliths – rocks that are picked up and carried by the flow as it goes. The xenoliths from this flow are made of dunites and gabbros and their presence tells us that there are dunites and gabbros deep within Hawaiian volcanoes. These rocks form as the volcanoes are growing: dunite is a rock rich in the mineral olivine, the first mineral to crystallize from Hawaiian lavas, while Gabbro is made of clinopyroxene and plagioclase, the next two abundant minerals that form from Hawaiian lavas. When the volcano is active and growing, it produces piles of dunite deep in its core when olivine grains form and sink, while the structure of the volcano gets built of rocks that look like gabbros. Poliahu and Pele

It is unclear if it was before or after 'Aiwohikupua that Poliahu met Pele.

Pele loved the holua — the race of sleds down long and narrow sloping grassy hillsides. She usually appeared as a woman of wonderful beauty and form a stranger unknown to anyone taking part in the sport. The chiefs of the different districts of the various islands had their favorite meeting places for any sport in which they desired to engage.

These were sheltered places where gambling reigned. Open glades were where boxing and spear throwing could best be practiced. Coasts were where the splendid surf made riding the waves on surfboards fun and exciting. And there were hillsides where sledders had to exercise every ounce of skill and strength they had.

Poliahu and her friends had come down Mauna Kea to a sloping hillside south of Hamakua. Suddenly in their midst appeared a stranger of surpassing beauty. Poliahu welcomed her and the races begun. Pele was quickly angered by the superiority, real or fancied, of Poliahu. The ground began to grow warm and Poliahu knew her enemy. Pele threw off all disguises and called for the forces of fire to burst open the doors of the underground caverns of Mauna Kea. Up toward the mountain she marshaled her fire fountains. Poliahu fled towards the summit. The snow mantle was seized by the outbursting lava and began to burn up. Poliahu grasped the robe, dragging it away and carrying it with her. Soon she regained strength and threw the mantle over the mountain. There were earthquakes upon earthquakes, shaking the great island from sea to sea. The mountains trembled while the tossing waves of the conflict between fire and snow passed through and over them. Great rock precipices staggered and fell down the mountainsides.

Clouds gathered over the mountain summit at Poliahu's call. Each cloud was gray and heavy with frozen condensation and the snow fell deep and fast on the mountain. Farther and farther down the sides the snow mantle unfolded until it dropped on the fountains of fire. The lava chilled and hardened and it choked out the flowing burning rivers. The lava, becoming stone, filled up the holes out of which the red melted mass was trying to force itself. Chilled the lava streams were beaten back into the depths of the earth.

The fire rivers, already rushing to the sea, were narrowed and driven downward so rapidly that they flew off the land and dropped immediately into the remorseless ocean. Thus the ragged mass of Laupahoehoe was formed and the great ledge of the arch of Onomea bay, and the different sharp and torn lavas in the edge of the sea which mark the various eruptions of centuries past.

Poliahu in legend has met Pele many times un battle. She has kept the upper part of Mauna Kea desolate under her mantle of snow and ice, but down towards the sea fertile and luxurious valleys and hillside slopes show the gifts from the goddess.

Out of Mauna Loa Pele has stepped forth again and again, and has hurled eruptions of mighty force and great extent against Poliahu. But it is said that in this battle Pele has always been defeated and always will be. Pele's kingdom has been limited to the southern half of the island of Hawaii. While the snow maidens rule the norther half.

Friday we plotted to take a helicopter tour of Hawaii’s waterfalls. We headed north to Sunshine Helicopter Kohala/Hamakua Coast tour. We lifted off from the Sunshine heliport and cruised the coast and these spectacular valleys filled with all these waterfalls. It was insane and pretty edgy.
