Hawaiian Trees
This week is a look at the typical trees that a visitor to Hawaiian might see! For the uses, many of the uses listed were from traditional Hawaiian society.
All trees were taken from this page: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/forestry/info/big-tree/

pipefish1Aug13-22 by divindk Via Flickr: We jumped on a plane and headed over to the Kona coast of the big island for a week of diving. Had some beautiful results in the first couple of days! Check out this male pipefish holding it's egg clutch along its belly!

I've been learning Hawaiian on the language learning app DUOLINGO since Jan 2nd '22 (which was not long after I couldn’t work OR drive anymore due to my multiple chronic illnesses, some since birth/growing up or whatever lol and others bc im a disabled veteran… I ended up with with a severe 2nd type of Epilepsy and other illnesses/worsening of others)…. AND I’ve 🤙JUST MADE IT TO 500 DAYS STRAIGHT!!!🤙
Im RARELY EVER proud of myself but this as silly as it is I am lol! Since I rarely leave the house for anything other than Dr appts or ER visits lol it REALLY REALLY HELPS (ANYTHING Hawaiian really… never been but #1 on bucket list, #2 is to see Bring Me The Horizon/Oli Sykes in Concert bc I can’t ever see my other favorite band, Linkin Park/Chester Bennington :(…. AND I’m OBSESSED with Grogu and Omega lol… favorite characters of all time! Cross is favorite sibling for Omega lol!)
Wow I’m so so sorry for going on lol! Im just excited lol! 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

Hawaii: Case Study in Biocultural Restoration
This isn't from my masters program, but rather my Bachelor's program. For my "thesis of sorts", I looked at Traditional Ecological Knowledge/Biocultural Restoration in Hawaii. For those who haven't heard of it before, the gist of it is using place-based knowledge employed by those who have historically lived in the region. In the case of Hawaii, this means drawing from sustainable practices that were historically used by the Native Hawaiians.
I'm not posting too much on it here, but that's just because I am linking the entire 19 page paper that me and a partner worked on for ENVR 480: ENVR History in the Community. My partner's name has been removed for privacy reasons. I've also included the poster we made, so you can have just a brief look at Biocultural Restoration in Hawaii if reading full academic papers aren't your thing.
Enjoy!

This winter is an El Niño year. This effects lots of places in different ways, but for the Hawaiian Islands it means the wet season (October-April) could be about 50% drier.
This is a good informational read if you're interested
I'm a little worried that with the El Niño, it will make the dry season even drier and thus will increase probability of wildfires and bush fires.
