I have to preface this by saying that I don't even work on art every day, much less comics. Last October I picked up knitting on a whim and spent all my free time making hats while listening to an audiobook of Moby-Dick. I made a lino print for the first time while sending out JW #1, fell in love with it, and have spent the last month or so carving and printing and experimenting. I go on painting jags, collage jags, writing jags, and I have two (2) guitars that are sitting in the corner patiently waiting for asteroid Kiana to circle back to them. I've been this way my whole life, and I am trying to work with it and not against it. HOWEVER. There is a hardcore Type A perfectionist inside me that wants nothing but consistency. This part of me abhors the flightiness, the mutations, the bouts of melancholy -- if there must be a Quest, it cries, let it be towards a singular Goal!!!!

For recovering perfectionists there really is no better teacher than Lynda Barry. She has a list of materials, she has dozens of exercises, she has you set time limits. According to her books she is quite a strict teacher in-class, demanding a lot of time, effort, care, and attention. All of this is wonderful. She boxes you in and sets you free.

"Making Comics" is the essential text. My favorite exercise is Monster Jam.

Here are a few of mine, all done left-handed to minimize the influence of the Type A chatter who lives in my brain. I have dozens and dozens of pages of these monsters. Barry recommends this specific process a lot: lay down the lines under pressure before your brain can catch up, then add color/patterns/details, under no pressure at all, while watching/listening to something you like.

There are several iterations after this - you draw their parents, an older sibling, a lover. Then you go back to the beginning and draw, in 6 panels, the story of their life. It somehow always presents itself.

As valuable as they are, I don't use these exercises to actually make comics nowadays. I use them to loosen up and activate that aforementioned feeling. Most of my comics come from doodles or notes scribbled down in a tiny notebook I carry everywhere. The process of making a longform comic is something I have bashed my head against for YEARS, and now involves divination, random image generation, a deck of Nancy cards, a lightbox, and a ton of panels chopped up and spread out on the floor so I can move them around. This is why I still only work in grids!

No because actually I can’t stop thinking about it like haha yes andrew has a much smaller presence in jean’s pov than in neil’s but like jean doesn’t actually not give a fuck about andrew. like. andrew Does Not Talk. he has no facial expressions and does not react to things much. obviously jean was not going to describe what he was doing most of the time. andrew once did not say a word for six hours and only neil noticed? but andrew still is a presence in jean’s mind. the fact that betsy helped andrew weighed on his decision to talk to her, he considers andrew part of the perfect court- his response to the reporter questioning andrew’s potential!!!- the way he pulled out drake’s name because it has weight to jean, because what happened to andrew has weight to him if nothing else, etc etc. like. jean is mean as hell and uncompromising as fuck but andrew, no matter the pet monster thing, does register to him as a factor in their collective lives

I want to ramble a bit about my character design choices for my comic for the SpiderForest Threads: Immortal anthology! And since this is my blog you can't stop me >:)

My comic for the anthology takes place sometime in the prehistory of the setting for Clover & Cutlass. I wanted the people we see in this timeframe to combine traits we see in the "modern" C&C setting (pointy ears! tusks!) with ones we haven't really seen anyone have yet (fur! stripes!).

As a big ol' nerd about Textile And Clothing History I spent a while pondering what kinds of spinning or weaving these folks would have access to. The flat strips of material used here could potentially be leather sewn together with tendon, but I think it's likely that at least some of that is fabric created via backstrap weaving.

They definitely have the basics of spinning though! The necklace this gal is wearing is plant material spun into a single-ply strand and then coated with red ochre pigment. If there's one thing people have loved doing across all areas of history, it's Make Pretty Thing To Wear.

(not a comic post bc apparently this is the blog where i talk about being roma)

so i volunteer in my local museum, right? and we do a lot of anti-racism stuff here, to the point where when i first mentioned i was roma, the volunteer coordinator came up to me and told me to tell her immediately if i felt anyone was being racist towards me.

so one day i'm doing my thing, talking to some kids about some bronze age jewelry, when i hear "GYPSY!!!"

and obviously i am. confused. shocked, scared i'm about to be assaulted, etc as anyone is when a slur that applies to you is screamed in the bg. i turn around, mainly to see if this is thrown at me as i'm pretty white passing.

i see this middle aged woman running after a toddler, and once again she yells "GYPSY!" and it occurs to me. in the year of our anarchy 2024 someone has named their child a slur and convinced me i'm about to get jumped in front of five seven-year-olds.

this doesn't have a moral or anything it was just really fucking weird

Hey hey hey. I am aware that I recently sort of blew up (wayyy more than I’d expected), and so far I’ve been getting updates out pretty quick. I am however a human being with a life, so I would like to clarify that they will likely slow down at least a little. I go through month-long highs and lows when it comes to art/artblock, so I just want to say that this “multiple updates per week” pace is not my norm, and is not something I can easily maintain. You folks have been nothing but kind in my notes so far, and I appreciate that a lot. I’m putting this out there more for myself so I don’t set unrealistic expectations in my head, but also as a PSA that I’m alive beyond the interweb
