Take A Break
Javi Rivera x Reader
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for my personal fic writing challenge for 2024, Sophie's Year of Fic! Featuring a new fic being posted every Friday, all year long :)
Fandom: Twisters
Summary: As part of Kate's original crew of tornado-tamers, you're as much of a workaholic as she is. Thankfully, Javi's around to help pull his girlfriend out of her notes when she really needs a break.
Word Count: 1,123
Category: Fluff, Humor, kind of angst just because of what happens to the original crew, but you can easily pretend that doesn't happen in the timeline of this fic :)
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Hey, enough work for tonight. Come join the party with the rest of us."
I smiled to myself as I made a few last notes off the computer screen. I knew Jeb was mostly talking to Kate, but I also knew that if I stayed here and tried to keep working after he managed to get Kate to take a break, my boyfriend wouldn't be far behind to literally drag me away from my notes.
I scribbled down a few last things as Jeb herded Kate away to the campfire, then started the process of shutting down my computer. Just as the last program finished closing, two arms wrapped tightly around my waist and picked me up, pulling me away from my work at the back of the truck.
"Javi!" I squealed, laughing as he slung me over one shoulder and started heading for the campfire.
"Yeah babe?"
"I was about to head over!"
"Oh yeah, I've heard that one before. Sorry, I know you too well. I know how fast another minute can turn into another hour. I care about this project as much as you do, but you need to take a break."
I sighed, rolling my eyes even though Javi couldn't see me. Even so, I couldn't totally hold back a smile.
"You know, Jeb just came and threw an arm around Kate."
"That's because Jeb lacks commitment," Javi responded as we neared the fire with the rest of our friends. He made sure to speak loudly enough that Jeb could hear him, too. "And because Kate's easier to convince than you are."
I scoffed, but the impact was lessened as Javi flopped into one of the chairs around the fire, pulling me around to sit in his lap in one smooth move. I shook my head and grinned up at him once we landed.
"You don't want your own chair?"
"My girl's had her head in her work, completely ignoring me for hours. No, I don't want my own chair."
I laughed, snuggling in closer to Javi and resting my head on his chest. He wrapped his arms tighter around me, and I smiled to see the rest of our friends settled comfortably around the fire, too.
"Glad you could finally join us!" called Praveen, Addy grinning beside him. I grinned right back.
"Don't act like I'm the only workaholic in this group," I said, fake-scowling as I curled closer into Javi's side. "You're all just as bad as I am. That's why we're friends."
"Alright, I resent the implicaiton that I don't know how to have a healthy work-life balance," said Javi, drawling his words a little as he held up his hands on either side of me to help illustrate his point. "I know how to have fun and how to work my ass off with Dorothy."
I twisted in Javi's lap to look up at him with a frown.
"Is it a healthy work-life balance to go way too hard on work and fun?"
He just looked down at me with a grin, leaning in for a quick kiss before pulling back with the same roguish smile.
"Hell yeah it is."
I just laughed and shook my head, leaning back on his shoulder as he tigthened his arms around me.
"Alright, whatever you say. I guess that's what college is for anyway, even if it's grad school."
"We're making memories. We have to have something to say when we're being interviewed for our incredible scientific breakthrough. Some good memories for the memoir."
"He's right," Jeb chimed in, leaning back and stretching his arm out across Kate's chair. "Most people won't want to hear that we spent every hour of every day in the lab. They want to know the people behind the science."
"I don't think any of the journals we want to publish in are going to care about who we are outside of the lab," Kate countered, flopping back against Jeb. "Or the people reading our grant proposals."
"Still works for the long-term headlines," Addy chimed in. "'Brilliant scientists tame the tornado, protecting the home where they spent countless nights together'."
"I think that's a little long," mused Kate.
"It makes it sound like we were all sleeping with each other or something," I added.
"Yeah, that's just the two sets of lovebirds over there," Praveen added.
Kate and Jeb smiled, Kate tucking her head into Jeb's shoulder, and I shot Praveen a wink before leaning up to give Javi a quick kiss. Praveen and Addy liked to make a big show of covering their eyes and shouting at any sign of PDA, but we knew it was all in good fun. They loved the four of us, both separately and as couples, even if they'd both developed strong ten minute comedy sets on the fact that they weren't dating each other or anyone else in our little group.
"Alright, enough of this," Kate said, leaning forward and raising an eyebrow. "I came over here with the promise of s'mores. So where are they?"
"Javi packed them," said Jeb, nodding in our direction. Javi shifted under me, settling further into the chair and wrapping his arms a little tighter around me.
"They're in the back of the van, but somebody else is gonna have to get them. I'm settled in here, and if I don't keep an eye on this one, she might just run right back to her computers."
Most of our friends rolled their eyes, but even so, Addy stood up.
"Lucky for both of you, I want s'mores enough that I'm willing to get up and take one for the team."
"Thank you, Addy," we chorused. She just waved us off with a smile. I waited until she passed Javi and I and got all the way to the truck, then leaned up to whisper in my boyfriend's ear.
"You absolutely know I wouldn't choose computers over s'mores. Probably ever."
"Of course I know," Javi said, leaning down to whisper in my ear with a smile, nuzzling into the crook of my shoulder. "But I'm enjoying sitting with you like this. We're too comfortable to be getting up for s'mores when we have friends that'll take care of that for us."
I laughed, nodding and resting my forehead against his.
"You're right. Genius decision."
"I know."
We shared a smile, one of Javi's hands gently squeezing my thigh as I leaned in to give him another quick kiss. Sitting by the fire with him, surrounded by all our friends, was my absolute favorite happy place. It made all the work and risk and long nights spent huddled over calculations and theories worth it, to be able to do it with Javi and the rest of our crew.

You always seemed to be getting yourself into situations. It didn’t matter what the nature of the problem was; you were just constantly getting into trouble of some kind. Whether it was a lame guy you were seeing, your car continually breaking down on the way to class, or, in this case, storm chasing, you were dealing with something. Sometimes, your faults lead you to better things, like a better guy in your life or a new car. Hopefully, for the storm-chasing part, an assured spot in graduate school for your project would be the outcome. Your fingers were crossed.
However, right now, more than just your fingers are crossed. Your toes and everything are crossed in hopes of finding a viable tornado today for your theory to be proven. You and your best friends have worked on the assignment for weeks. And it all comes down to how today goes. A breakout of severe weather is expected in your hometown, so there’s no better time than now to test your work. While Kate, Praveen, Addy, and Jeb go into the field, you and Javi hang back to watch the radar and communicate with the group.
“How are things looking out there?” Javi radios in after everyone is settled where they’re supposed to be.
“Lookin’ good,” Kate says, “The winds are crazy out here.”
“That’s what we like to hear,” you respond.
You and Javi hover over the laptop, and the radar shows a large moving storm around where the group is currently.
“Guys, there’s a huge cell over you. Is it anything good?” you radio.
“We’re driving through it now,” Jeb shouts over the sound of pelting sheets of rain, “It’s insane. It’s like the sky opened up.”
“We just have to get through the rain wall, and it should clear out enough for us to see if there’s formation,” Praveen adds.
Commotion is heard over the radio, “Tornado spotted!”
You can see the tornado hook on the radar and become worried as the wind where you and Javi are parked becomes more violent as minutes pass.
“Is everything all good over there?” you ask, and you don’t receive an answer immediately.
“I think it’s too big,” Kate says, a tinge of worry in her voice, “Maybe we should try another time?”
You step out of the van to look ahead at the tornado, and it’s pretty large from a distance.
“I need you guys to get the hell out of there now!” you shout over the walkie.
“You don’t have to tell us twice,” Addy says in a panic.
But, little do you know, it’s too late. The tornado continues to grow quickly, the winds ravaging the car the group is in. They decide to bail and head for the overpass despite being the worst shelter option. But, it’s either that or get sucked up into the monstrous storm and tossed around, or worse. Praveen flies away into the tornado despite his best efforts to run. Addy struggles up the ramp, not far behind Kate and Jeb. Kate tries her best to grab a hold of Addy, but she slips, and the wind takes her into the violent storm. Jeb clings to Kate, shielding her from the whirlwind of debris and ripping gusts. He eventually slips away like the others, much to Kate’s horror.
When a few minutes pass without any communication from the group, you decide to climb into the driver’s seat of the van and book it down the road in their direction. You keep speeding forward despite Javi shouting at you to stop or slow down. You get far enough away to see the overpass as the tornado goes through it and hop out. Javi clambers out of the vehicle, chasing you as you run as fast as your legs can carry you to where you think you see Kate.
“Stop!” Javi calls your name, barrelling toward you.
“Kate!” you scream out, but the sound of the wind drowns out your voice.
The tornado’s path turns toward you and Javi, and you skid to a complete stop. You immediately turn around to see Javi hot on your heels, and he’s also turning to run away. He looks back every few seconds to see if you’re gaining on him. He realizes you aren’t running fast enough and turns around to grab you. Javi puts you on his back and begins running as fast as possible. But the tornado isn’t letting up, and it’s getting closer. Javi spots a deep ditch on the side of the road and makes a run for it. He lays you down in the grass and covers your body with his, shielding you from the tornado that just nearly misses you both. It flies by, taking the van with it. You’re hyperventilating with your eyes squeezed shut as you cling to Javi. The roaring of the storm makes your ears feel like they’re going to burst.
Suddenly, it’s over. Silence fills the air with an occasional clap of thunder in the distance. The howling tornado has dissipated at last. You’re still clutching Javi for dear life. He pulls off of you, his body still over you but not pressed to you.
“Are you okay?” Javi asks, and you can barely hear him through the ringing of your ears.
“Yeah,” you wince, “You?”
Javi sighs, “I’m as good as I can be for surviving a tornado.”
The two of you jog to the overpass, where Kate is still wrapped around a steel rod tucked under the concrete. You don’t see any of the others, and dread fills you.
“Kate!” you call out to her, and she cries out your name in response.
You and Javi help her slide down the ramp and notice she has a large gash in her thigh. You both help her walk through the somewhat clear path in the debris. There’s mud, grass, splintered wood, and other various shards of what used to be cars and houses covering the road. Kate explains what happened to the rest of the group the best she can, but you and Javi don’t have to ask any questions to understand what occurred. It’s not something any of you want to think about right now. The three of you finally stumble upon the town closest to where you are, and first responders help Kate with her leg.
“I can’t thank you enough, Javi,” you say, standing next to him as you watch the paramedics tend to Kate, “You really saved my ass out there.”
“It’s no problem,” Javi shrugs, “You know I’d do anything for you.”
You look over at your best friend, a grin growing on your face. You lean over and gently kiss Javi on his cheek. His face burns underneath his freckles, and you chuckle at his reaction.
After all that happened, there’s a lot of rebuilding and healing to do. And with the help of each other, you and Javi eventually move on. Kate goes off to the east coast and doesn’t really keep in touch. Javi’s new career needs expertise you can provide, but you refuse unless Kate is there to help. She can sense things you can’t. So, you and Javi fly to New York City, and a new adventure begins with Kate. Hopefully, this time, there will be success in yet another difficult situation you’ve been put into.

Kate and Javi and their team loved those storm chaser parking lot parties. Javi would play his guitar and Addie would leap to her feet, dragging Kate along with her. Jeb was easily persuaded by Kate and it was only a matter of time before they convinced a reluctant Praveen to join them. They would sing and dance and laugh well into the night.
Javi hadn’t picked up his guitar since their last night together, fearing that the notes, too, would be carried away by the wind.

RG Kar MCH the focal point of the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case. Only because monsters committed such a heinous crime with the Dr. Tilottoma.
Old articles are thought to show the numerous reported records which were ignored or unresolved.
--------------------------------------------------
1999:
The lone name to emerge from the shadows of 1999 was Madhusudan Sau, whose life reportedly ended in February of that year, leaving behind a veil of mystery and unanswered questions. No details have been shared or found about him, to date.
2001:
The mysterious death of fourth-year student Soumitra Biswas sparked allegations that he was murdered for attempting to expose a porn ring. Despite the arrest of a female student, Auromita Das, and police questioning members of the SFI, the case remains unresolved, with little progress made by the West Bengal Police CID.
2003:
In February 2003, two back-to-back incidents at RG Kar Medical College brought the total of suspicious deaths and suicides at the institution to four within a few years.
The cases include Arijit Datta (February 2003), who reportedly committed suicide by jumping off a hostel roof, and Praveen Gupta (February 2003), who survived a suicide attempt.
2016:
In October 2016, the decomposed body of RG Kar Medical College professor Gautam Pal, 54, was found in his locked South Dum Dum apartment. Police suspected a heart attack, as his bed was undisturbed, but blood stains, facial bruises, and the absence of a suicide note raised concerns. The contents of his stomach were preserved for poison testing.
2020:
In May 2020, 25-year-old trainee doctor Poulami Saha reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the 6th floor of the emergency building during the COVID-19 pandemic. While no suicide note was found, police indicated she had been suffering from depression. Conflicting reports suggested she may have jumped from the 11th floor, but the hospital did not confirm the suicide.
2023:
In January 2023, RG Kar Medical College student Sayan Mondal died during a trekking trip in Uttarakhand, marking a departure from previous incidents that occurred within the hospital. After reaching Brahmatal, Mondal collapsed while descending, suffering from severe breathing difficulties. He was rushed to Dewal Government Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
2023:
In August of 2023, intern Suvorojyiti Das, 23, from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, died from an apparent drug overdose. The Tala Police classified the case as 'unnatural death,' attributing it to an antidepressant overdose, and found no suicide note or evidence of foul play. Das was discovered unconscious by his family and died in the hospital’s critical care unit after being rushed there.
2023:
In September 2023, a final-year medical student accused Sandip Ghosh of ignoring a ragging complaint and threatening him to falsely claim the issue was resolved. Despite Ghosh’s transfers, he frequently returned to the hospital. The student reported enduring physical and mental abuse over three years and criticized Ghosh’s inaction and favouritism towards certain students.
...
The fact is that this fucker Sandip Ghosh initially declared her death as a 'suicide' too, but I guess the evidence were too big for him to tamper with.
There might be more unreported cases Between all these years, especially 2003-2016 which were either hidden or voices were silenced.
Shame on you TMC for standing beside this man.

The year that was...
In the Mahābhārata, there is a brutally honest verse that says, “In the great ocean, two wood-logs come close to each other and then drift apart; human relationships are pretty much the same!”

From the time I first came across this verse about a decade ago, it deeply resonated with me. However much we may try, it appears impossible to reduce the fragility of relationships. Akin to coasting on the waves of the mighty ocean, we become close to some people and move away from others who were hitherto inseparable from us—often owing to circumstances more than volition. At school, I was eternally in the company of a few friends; by the time I came to college, it was a totally different bunch—and by the time I started working, it was another group. It is not like I have lost touch with all my friends of the past. But the strength of the old bonds are directly proportional to the memory of one’s childhood and youth. Some people remember their past and some others strive to forget it. Furthermore, people change—some for the better and some for the worse! And so, when we deal with life as being a dynamic equilibrium, we become more accepting of change, and make the necessary course corrections with lesser effort. Truth be told, the moment we acknowledge that all relationships are ephemeral, we learn to value the existing connexions with people—and that paves the way for inner peace.
This is not to say that I had a gloomy year in any way—in fact, right at the start of 2024, I turned forty and my close friends threw a surprise party for me. I was showered with their affection and gifts, making my fortieth a special one. It was a moment that made me realize how fortunate I have been.
It was also a year of immense learning – from attending Dr. Prasad Bapat’s workshop on Cosmology to the Education Retreat during the January 26th weekend (the experts who spoke, the audience, and the organizers were all from our friends group); from the weekly meeting with Dr. S R Ramaswamy where a variety of topics are discussed to the remarkable opportunity to interact with eminent personages – noted painters G L N Simha and Chandranath Acharya; scholars across generations, all of whom I was meeting for the first time: Dr. T V Venkatachala Sastry, Dr. P S Ramanujan, Dr. R N Iyengar, and Raj Vedam; D V Gundappa’s nephew R Chandramouli, who regaled us with several anecdotes from the polymath’s life; and the art historians R G Singh and H S Dharmendra of Ramsons Art Gallery.

With Sri R Chandramouli (center) and his wife
My musician-friend from Chile, Cristian Vega Encina wrote to me earlier this year to inform about the death of Maestro Millapol Gajardo, whom I had the great pleasure of meeting twice—in 2006 and in 2015. He was a multi-instrumentalist who played the bansuri and the tabla, among others. He visited Varanasi in the 1960s and spent considerable time in India, learning Hindustani music. When I first went to his house, which was located in an older part of Santiago, I felt like I was entering an Indian house. He had a huge library with innumerable books about India and Indian culture. He made authentic masala chai for me and we had a lovely jam session—Millapol on bansuri, me on violin, and Cristian on tabla. Then he showed me a video from a Jean Renoir movie that featured Varanasi. He pointed out to the television screen and said, “That is my city!” with his eyes just a little moist. To see the genuine love for Bhārata and Bhāratīya-saṃskṛti ten thousand miles away deeply inspired me.

Maestro Millapol Gajardo (bansuri) and Cristian Vega Encina (tabla)
In 2024, I had the pleasure of addressing the audience at the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs (Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3), post-graduate medical students of the JSS College, and the devotees of the Radhakrishna Temple at Sanjaynagar, Bangalore. Praveen Nair invited me to be a part of the Prāna Stories Podcast, where I spoke about the universality of Sanātana-dharma (Part 1 and Part 2). The Gītā guru, Sri K V Shivaswami sir and the indefatigable Shilpa Sharma of Seattle were responsible for convincing me to conduct a full-fledged Bhagavad-gītā course covering all 700 ślokas (from March to May). Later they convinced my co-author Dr. Koti Sreekrishna also to teach a Gītā course. Both these courses were well received by the participants and it was inspiring to see the dedication of people across ages, who showed up day after day for the classes. Upon the insistence of my good friend Vikram Phadke, I appeared for a few minutes on a Kannada television show.
In my day job, I was able to work on a few books and also facilitate others in their book-writing journey to some extent. I have given a long list at the end of my reflections.
I tided past a health scare and consolidated my finances—with the hope that in 2025, I don’t have to worry about time or money and can focus on things that I truly desire to pursue. I also lost a decades-old bet with my student/friend, M R Jayasimha. Years ago, when he was learning the violin from me at the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts, he had told me that I would buy a car some day in the future and I had wagered that I would never have the need for one. Some fifteen years later, it turns out that I was wrong!
On the family front, my mother and grandmother spent a successful year after shifting from our ancestral house in Halasuru to a flat in Malleswaram next door to me; my father and brother make regular trips to spend time here. Earlier this year, my cousin Arun got married and in December 2024, my niece Mahathi gave birth to a baby boy, which I think gives me license to enter into retirement!
Mark Twain famously wrote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” This year, like many earlier ones, took me to different places—Chennai, Chittorgarh, Coimbatore, Dhar, Dharwar, Ellora, Honnavar, Jodhpur, Kalale, Kanyakumari, Kimsar, Kothagiri, Krong Siem Riep, Kumbalgarh, Melkote, Mysore, Pandavpura, Preah Vihear, Ranakpur, Sriperumbudur, Thiruvananthapuram, Vellore, etc.
The last week of the year, which I spent in Chennai, was particularly memorable: witnessing an iconic concert of my guru Dr. L Subramaniam and Ud. Amjad Ali Khan, spending time with cousins, attending two concerts of the legendary Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam (Bhagavad-gita and Jaya Jaya Shankara), and being a part of the 42nd Natya Kala Conference that was brilliantly curated by my good friends Nirupama and Rajendra.
As for 2025 goals, I suppose I will not make them public like I did last time because much of it remains undone!

From a geo-politics perspective, 2024 was a year of a great deal of churning. The task cut out for the heads of State in various corners of the globe is daunting to say the least. We will have to wait and watch how 2025 pans out—one can only hope that the life-negating forces of death cults of the deserts may be silenced just a little more.
Thanks for reading this far, and with this I wish you and your family a wonderful new year! I hope it will be filled with joy, good health, prosperity, and moments to cherish. May your dreams come true!

May be ఫోటోను వేలాడదీయడానికి అయ్యుండొచ్చా?

“ i thought i might find you out here. ” her voice is soft as she steps into the barn, moving gingerly on her recently unbraced knee. she’s going back to new york tomorrow, and javi keeping up his promise to get her back to the airport in one piece is still TECHNICALLY true. kate steps up until they’re standing side by side, hips brushing. jeb, addy, praveen, and their respective younger selves beam at them from photos that litter the cork board before them, their clashing but beloved handwriting scattered across papers and sticky-notes. she no longer feels like screaming and tearing the whole thing down every time she looks at it, instead a vague semblance of peace has settled into her chest. “ guest room’s all turned down and ready if you wanted to turn in. ”

Meteora Developers Founder Proclaims 2024 as the Defining Year for Dubai's Affordable Luxury Market
As we sail into 2024, the Dubai real estate market is undergoing a remarkable transformation, particularly in its segment of affordable luxury properties. This shift is spearheaded by industry pioneers like Praveen Sharma, the visionary behind Meteora Developers. Their latest project, Vita Grande, exemplifies this trend, selling out rapidly post-launch and underscoring Dubai's stature as a leading global destination for luxury real estate. Sharma, at the helm of Meteora Developers, observes Dubai's ascent as the premier market for opulent homes. The city's allure is bolstered by the influx of affluent global citizens seeking unparalleled real estate experiences in this prestigious locale. Reflecting on 2023, Sharma notes the robust growth of Dubai's property market, driven by investor confidence and government initiatives that attract a diverse range of long-term investors.
Recent data from the Dubai Land Department indicates a surge in high-value home sales, with a record number of transactions amounting to billions. The overall property transactions have also seen a significant uptick, evidencing the economy's continuous expansion. Sharma highlights the growing demand for off-plan properties, capturing a substantial segment of Dubai's real estate market. The appeal for young, ambitious investors lies in the attractive entry costs and flexible payment options. This trend is poised to amplify in 2024, with an increasing workforce in the UAE, including a notable proportion of Emiratis and expatriates. The UAE's Nafis program has significantly augmented the local workforce, paving the way for a new generation with disposable income and a penchant for luxurious yet accessible real estate. Sharma anticipates this demographic shift to fuel further demand in the market. Meteora Developers' journey, marked by the successive launches and sell-outs of The East Crest and 7 Park Central, culminates in the unveiling of Vita Grande. Situated in Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), these developments mirror the acute demand for affordable luxury in Dubai. Omar Al Amour, co-founder of Meteora Developers, reaffirms the company's commitment to catering to this burgeoning demand. Despite the luxury market's price spikes, Dubai maintains its allure for affordable, luxury real estate. According to Knight Frank, the Dubai real estate market has witnessed consistent growth across multiple quarters. Despite this positive trajectory, prices still hover below their peak levels of 2014, suggesting potential for further growth. Vita Grande, destined to be a landmark development, promises luxury and convenience in JVC. This strategic location offers residents a blend of urban living and serene parklands, along with proximity to key destinations. Al Amour assures timely delivery of Vita Grande, reflecting the market's vitality and the company's dedication to exceeding investor expectations. The unique construction approach adopted by Meteora Developers ensures efficiency and cost-effectiveness, benefitting investors. In conclusion, the Dubai real estate market, with its evolving trends and burgeoning demand for affordable luxury, presents a golden opportunity for real estate investment. Meteora Developers, under the leadership of Sharma and Al Amour, continues to redefine the landscape with innovative developments, cementing their position as trailblazers in the ever-dynamic Dubai real estate trends.

Are Chess GMs smart people?
Do Grandmasters really have 220 IQ? Or are they normal people like you and me, who just got better through practice? Scientists have been doing research on this for years, and on the internet you’ll find articles telling you how chess makes you smart. This article though, will be different.
Here, I’ll share some unheard stories of famous chess personalities. And along with that, share how playing chess sharpens your mind. In my opinion, the 7th point on the list is perhaps why chess players are a little more smarter than the average person.
Hint – It’s not because they have better memory or better focus. It’s something that you wouldn’t expect from a chess player.
What’s that? Keep reading and you’ll find out!

1. Better memory
Recently, I was watching a stream where Garry Kasparov was invited to show his best game. He showed some truly fascinating lines, like one would expect of him.
But what surprised me was his ability to remember novelties he prepared during his prime and the incident behind them!
In one such story, he explained how he had prepared a strong idea against Karpov, but had to play it against Vassily Ivanchuk. And when he showed the position, he was able to recollect where the pieces go, how the attack continues even after 20+ years!
Also have you heard about Magnus Carlsen’s famous story? Legend has it that he could name the capital of every country by the time he was 6 years old! And this is just one of his small feats!
Most chess players have a good memory. They remember things which are important to them! Maybe not as well as Kasparov or Magnus, but better than your average person next door.
2. Better spatial ability
Research done on Samuel Reshvesky, one of the top chess prodigies in the 1940s revealed Reshvesky’s remarkable spatial ability. You might wonder what it is in the first place? It’s simply the ability to understand space between two objects. For chess players, a well developed spatial recognition ability helps them visualize better. You can ‘see’ the pieces in your mind well without moving them.
And since most coaches ask their students to solve chess puzzles, this skill gets strengthened more and more!
Note: If you’re looking for an experienced chess coach who’ll ask you to solve tactics, get in touch with us.
3. The Tale of 3 World Champions who were great at maths
There are 3 world champions who were also mathematicians. They were – Mikhail Botvinnik, Max Euwe and Emmanuel Lasker. Now this doesn’t mean that because of chess, they were better mathematicians or vice-versa. But definitely, there has to be some correlation.
See, chess players spend so much time calculating the lines – “Like this piece goes here, that goes there, and if I take 2 of his men, he takes 1 one mine, what am I left at in the end?” Asking such questions over and over during the game is going to improve the mathematical ability of players. Maybe not in the most effective fashion, but it certainly does the trick.
4. Improved focus
Yeah, this one has to be there on the list. It’s no secret that chess requires concentration. When you see Grandmasters play, you’ll see how quiet and focussed they are.
This same skill helps them in their studies. It makes them more focussed and helps them stay on track! I wouldn’t convince you on this one because this is probably the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of chess.
At Saswath Academy and Mind mentorz,
“It is about offering ample opportunities for the kids to explore, grow and perfect the art of playing chess”, says Praveen Sagar. “For the budding chess players, it is important to strengthen the skills and have the right perception about the broader canvas of chess before plunging into competitions. We help them approach the game from different angles and challenge their skills at various levels through competitions.”

Praveen Sagar, Coach, Mentor at Mind mentorz and Saswath Academy
5. Chess players are curious
Chess is a game of unlimited possibilities. Even after it’s existence for so many centuries, no one has solved the game. There are endless possibilities that still need to be explored. All of this makes one very curious.
When you apply the same mindset to academics, it makes you thirsty for more knowledge in the subject of your liking.
Many strong players follow other sports and have other interests. One such example that comes to mind is Vishwanathan Anand. He has an interest in astronomy, poker which are outside the realm of chess.
6. Chess players can sometimes read minds
Our coaches often teach the concept of prophylaxis — where you understand what your opponent wants to do, and make a move to anticipate that. And in chess, the skill to read your opponent’s mind is gold.
So, I know when you clicked on this article, you probably wanted to hear something apart from chess improves IQ, makes you a strategic thinker and all the vague terms which just add fluff. How did I do it?
Because I was using prophylaxis!
Moving on, as I promised, the 7th point is in my opinion the secret sauce which makes chess players smart.
7. Gritty Grandmasters
Most people will be surprised by this. But Grandmasters show a lot of grit and fight during difficult moments. Today, chess has become a sport. So a chess player requires all the mental skills that a track and field athlete possesses. When you fight in chess, people don’t see it. That’s because you get neither bruises nor sweat. You could look as cool as a cucumber even after resisting pressure for 6 hours!
Think Karpov, or Sergey Karjakin.
But to put that kind of a resistance, you need to have the mindset of a hardened warrior!
And this is what helps chess players tremendously in their academies.
If they don’t find a solution to a problem, they won’t give up. They’ll ask for help and they will find a way!
If they know they have to complete their homework after finishing a tiring tournament, they’ll do it.
They know how to fight peacefully, they know what mental perseverance looks like. So they know how to stick around when things get tough.
It’s this grit which makes the most difference.
Conclusion
Learning to play chess at an early age can definitely be one the best investments you can make in your child’s future. If they play well, they get to meet new people, travel the world and do everything that most people could only dream of!
