Review: I'll be honest, I didn't finish this book. I read the vietnam war part, and skipped the rest because even the war part was difficult to get through. This wasn't quite a 1 star book but it definitely came close. For anyone who has read anything about Operation Market Time, the Swift boats, or even coastal advisors - this book sets off red flags and alarm bells. The author has some very strong opinions about everyone and everything and often ... well ... let's just say that he vacillates wildly from complete bullshit to just plain stupid. Avoid this book and read Bob Andretta's Brown Water Runs Red for a better book on the Junk Force.

Ik ben Ulis Pattiapon 2e generatie Molukker, geboren in Hutumuri. Samen met mijn ouders, vader Dominggus Alexander Pattiapon en mijn moeder Selfiana Talahatu Rutung en mijn oudere broer zijn wij met het schip de” Kota Inten” aan de Loyd Kade in Rotterdam in Nederland aangekomem. Ik was toen 1 jaar en 3 maanden oud. Mijn jeugd bracht ik door in kamp Nuis, gemeente Marum, in de provincie Groningen. Hier heb ik tot mijn 12de jaar gewoond. In 1963/64 zijn wij verhuisd naar de Molukse woonwijk te Marum. Onze ouders mochten destijds niet werken.Toen dat wel mocht moesten 60% van hun loon afstaan aan de overheid. Mijn vader werkte bij Philips fabriek in Drachten (Friesland). Ze moesten de eerste scheerapparaten (zogenaamde eitjes) in elkaar zetten. Later nog bij de Koetsfabriek in Hoogkerk in productie van achterlichtjes van fietsen en later bij de AAgrunol fabriek afdeling Plastics in Groningen. Hij en mijn moeder zijn helaas maar 62 jaar geworden. Mijn vader heeft zijn pensioenleeftijd niet gehaald. Ze liggen beiden op het oude kerkhof, voor het kamp Nuis, begraven. Toen ik klein was en nog in kamp Nuis woonde had ik al een voorliefde voor landbouw. Had toen ook een “kebun“ naast die van de oom bujangs achter Barak A waar wij woonden. Was van kleins af aan al in de grond aan het wroeten. Tot mijn 14e jaar was ik ook bewust over hoe ons leven was. Daarvoor was ik nogal heet gebakerd en snel kwaad. Verder had ik ook interesse in geschiedenis en was bewust bezig met de Politiek met betrekking tot de Molukkers. Ik wilde mijn passie volgen. Gestimuleerd door mijn hardwerkende ouders en gericht op de toekomst, ben ik op mijn 16e naar Deventer gegaan om te studeren aan de (Koloniale) Tropische- en suptropische Hogere Landbouw School. Heb hiervoor wel de Mulo A+B gedaan. Ben toen naar de HBS gegaan. Kwam toen direct in het 3e leerjaar en heb de overgang naar het 4e gehaald van de HBS. Dit waren de voorwaarden om toegelaten te worden. Daarnaast moest ik ook nog een psychologische test ondergaan, waaruit blijkt dat ik deze opleiding kan/mag volgen. Mijn ervaring in het buitenland viel tussen het 2e en 3e leerjaar. Hiervoor ben op 20 jarige leeftijd in 1970 (4 maand ) op Praktijkstage geweest in Israël en was gestationeerd in Kibbuz Hulata, Opper Galilea (tussen Libanon en Syrië). Was werkzaam in de veeteelt (2 maand) en 2 maand in de vollegrondsteelt (Katoen) in de irrigatietechniek. Na deze opleiding heb ik de Specialisatie Cursus Ziekten en Plagen in de Tropische- en subtropische gewassen gedaan. Hierna heb een praktijkstage gedaan op toenmalige Landbouw Hogeschool Wageningen (LHW). (Lees verder in deel 2.)
