Lisa Needham at Public Notice:
During the 2024 election, Donald Trump made no secret of his plan to close the Department of Education (DOE). That hasn’t happened yet, though an executive order that would functionally dismantle the agency is in the works. In the meantime, Trump is already exploiting it to dehumanize and harass marginalized groups.
The administration is busy using the department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to attack trans kids while shuttering nearly every other type of civil rights investigation. It’s a complete abdication of the federal government’s role in protecting students from discrimination and a grim example of how Trump is weaponizing the federal government. Conservatives have wanted to shutter the DOE for decades, saying that education policy is best set at the state and local levels. The problem with that argument is that education policy is already set by states and localities. There is no such thing as a federal education curriculum, and the federal government can’t tell schools what to teach. But what the DOE can do is investigate schools for failing to follow federal civil rights laws. While conservatives might assume that the DOE’s civil rights investigations are all about imposing woke ideologies on red state parents, most complaints to OCR are about schools discriminating based on disability. Given that Trump is mounting a full-scale attack on accessibility, it isn’t surprising that the DOE has simply stopped investigating the thousands of disability-related complaints that were already in process.
Most of these types of complaints are filed by students, their families, or legal advocacy groups. ProPublica found that when Trump took office, there were roughly 12,000 investigations in the pipeline, around 6,000 of which were disability-related. About 3,200 complaints were regarding racial discrimination, and around 1,000 related to sexual harassment. Now, all of those complaints are on ice, with ProPublica reporting that investigators have been barred from communicating with the complainants. Instead, the DOE has opened about 20 investigations based on rightwing culture war grievances. It’s a clear statement about the administration’s priorities and a clear threat to any school or organization that won’t fall in line. One week into Trump’s second term, OCR opened an investigation into Ithaca City Schools in New York over their yearly summits for students of color. The complaint came from the Equal Protection Project, which was founded by Cornell University Law Professor William A. Jacobson and exists solely to attack affirmative action programs. The OCR investigation sends a message that it takes nonsensical allegations of anti-white racism seriously and that affinity groups and events that simply allow students of color to gather will be considered discriminatory.
[...] But the administration doesn’t believe in local control. It believes in imposing, by any means, the conservative viewpoint on blue states. That’s why, last week, it opened investigations into the governing bodies for high school sports in California and Minnesota. Both states allow trans students to participate in high school sports in conformance with their gender identity. According to the administration, this conflicts with Trump’s executive order banning trans women from participating in women’s sports. But an executive order isn’t a law, as much as Trump would like to think it is, and both California and Minnesota have actual laws on their books requiring protection of trans athletes. California’s education code says that students are allowed to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity and Minnesota’s anti-discrimination law forbids discrimination based on gender identity. In other words, neither state could bar trans students from playing high school sports without running afoul of their own laws. It will ultimately be up to the courts to figure out if Trump’s executive order can functionally overrule state laws, a depressing thought given the conservative stranglehold on the federal courts. In an incredibly cynical move, the DOE also opened investigations into five universities for antisemitism. The five schools — Columbia, Berkeley, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern, and Portland State — are all under fire for pro-Palestinian protests that occurred on campus. Conservatives were furious that the Biden administration didn’t shut them down and are now praising Trump for “taking action to protect Jewish students.”
Of course, this administration has no intention of protecting Jewish students. Not only is Trump dismantling civil rights protections across the board, but both he and JD Vance have consistently been openly, wildly anti-semitic. Trump has accused Jewish people of insufficient loyalty to America and trafficked in the antisemitic trope that Jews control all the money. JD Vance has invoked the Great Replacement conspiracy theory, which says that Jewish people are behind a scheme to replace white Americans with immigrants who will always vote for Democrats. Vance has also cozied up to AfD, the far-right antisemitic German party. These are not people who are genuinely interested in ensuring that Jewish students are not discriminated against on college campuses. Instead, these are people who are willing to weaponize allegations of antisemitism. It’s also a way to signal that dissent on college campuses will not be tolerated. While the administration is busy using OCR as an attack dog, actual complaints about real discrimination are not being investigated.
[...]
Upside down world
The future of the Department of Education isn’t clear at all. Trump has waffled about whether he thinks he can get away with (illegally) eradicating a cabinet-level agency with the stroke of a pen, but in any event he has a compliant Congress that may be willing to get rid of it for him. GOP Sen. Mike Rounds, from South Dakota, introduced a bill to eliminate the department before Trump even took office. Over in the House of Representatives, Rep. Thomas Massie has done the same.
The US Department of Education, and especially its Office of Civil Rights division, has become a MAGA enforcement agency. The DOE’s Office of Civil Rights is being used to subvert trans rights and actual claims of discrimination, especially disabilities-related.

Your Mustsumi piece is really stylish! How did you do the backgrounds and come up with the composition?
Thank you so much! :-) I feel it's appropriate to respond to this ask on Mutsumi's birthday hehe. Forgive my weird wording btw (if it seeps in) as I am unfortunately strange like that (and feel free to ask away any questions!)
Summary: Modify already existing patterns, the darker your white is the better (trust), focus on the focal point, and Man I fucking love triangles.
First on the background (with a hint of color theory):
Tumblr media
I took it from the Ibis Paint X image-archive-thing (???). It's actually a nice resource for stuff like this. If you use a different drawing platform try looking for your own in-app/in-program archive or consider searching online. In Ibis Paint X, not all patterns are available for non-premium users but personally it's not much of an issue (especially since non-premium versions of these textures tend to exist, with different colorings).
There are tons of these available by looking into the Japanese Texture (Color), Cloth Patterns (Color) and Patterns (Color) sections. Personally I prefer to alter the already colored ones as they are easier to work with, while the Gray/B&W ones require more retouching with blend mode layers. However, feel free to experiment and use whatever works best for you.
I was lucky to find one with a similar color palette to my drawing, but there's still some tweaking to be done to make it darker and warmer (as stated in the image). In this drawing it was relatively straightforward, though I've previously had to make more detailed modifications in other ones to make everything blend in naturally (mainly painting over different elements and particular shapes).
There's no rule for the specific blend modes –as in, they don't necessarily have to be multiply + darken, and there's no need to restrict yourself to solely 2 layers either. The same could be said about the opacity. It's merely situational. Instead, try playing around with them and/or learn how each one works to be able to pick them quicker.
For example, once I had applied the multiply layer something still felt off: there was a lack of ocre tones, which had been cancelled by the purple-ish color I painted it all over with. I especially wanted the darker colors to lean towards purple, while making the lighter ones lean towards green, so I applied a green darken layer which mainly affects the tones closer to white.
On a separate note: Color theory yay!! I freaking love color theory!!! As you can see in the bottom corner, I didn't use (and don't tend to ever use) pure white (#FFFFFF) or pure black (#000000). Actually, some artists will strongly advise against doing so, saying it looks beginner-like and muddy. I slightly disagree with this, or at least I think it's a bad way to put it (I mean, have you seen comic art? Pure black shading can look great when done well).
However, it's true that beginners won't be great at using pure black/white and it's greatly beneficial to experiment with off-white and such. Adding a slight tint to your neutrals makes a nice difference, and IMO the greater you can make it stray away from its original tone and still make it look convincing, the better!
By the way, notice how there's no "white" or "black" in the background? I reserved these contrasting tones for the figure. This is to draw your attention towards her, instead of adding more contrast to the background and making it all overwhelming.
Anyways, here are some other drawings in which I also used modified preset Ibis backgrounds:
• These KanaMafu drawings. It's the same pattern in both drawings, just flipped vertically and with inverted colors.
• This Kanade drawing.
Now, moving onto composition:
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, this was all a pretty subconscious process. I actively had to look for the principles I had applied, because honestly "figure in the center of a vertical canvas" seemed simple enough for a composition, but there's more to it!
I honestly feel like this is very self-explanatory as shown in the image, but if it isn't please ask me to elaborate B-).
Note: regarding the "airbrush work" mentioned, I meant I slightly painted over with a dark airbrush towards the bottom of the canvas and then lowered the opacity. Again, the whole thought process here was Closer to the focal point = lighter colors, smaller shapes and more detailed brush strokes.
But! There's more!!!:
Tumblr media
Still on composition and color, something that is extremely useful and that I unfortunately forgot to do while working on this drawing is to check your values. This means translating the piece into B&W.
Due to the fact that I didn't check my values, the hair sort of blends in with the background. Upon noticing this, I added a highlight the same color as the angel wings (off-white). This was useful at making more of a distinction, but I could've definitely pushed it further had I followed this advice.
Onto (probably) my favorite art advice ever: TRIANGLES. Use triangles whenever you can. ESPECIALLY when there's negative space (space not occupied by the figure). This works so well to make your silhouettes more legible and dynamic. It's a life-saver.
Also, look up Sinix Design and Marco Bucci on YouTube for some great art advice.
I'm pretty sure that's all, sorry for becoming the yap monster. I really hope this was helpful! Thanks again for your ask and have a nice day/afternoon/night.

Tools I use for learning languages
Since the core concept of how I learn languages is by understanding "messages", there's really only one tool that I actually need: a translator. Well maybe two if you count search engine or chatgpt for looking for some explanation on grammar points. That said, I use several tools (usually in the form of chrome extensions), basically to streamline the process, to make the process easier and faster so that I have more time to actually learn the language, not wasting my time on, for example, going back and forth between my learning materials and a translation website and copying and pasting sentences every time.
1. Mouse Tooltip Translator
Tumblr media
This is my main tool that if I can only have 1 chrome extension I'll probably choose this. What it does is actually really simple, I wonder why there's nothing like this anywhere else: it gives you a popup translation of a word that you're hovering on. That's it.
But I think what makes it even more powerful is that you can tweak some settings. Like you can, instead of a word, translate a sentence at a time. You still want to look up word by word but sometimes phrase by phrase, sentence by sentence, even a whole paragraph? Just turn on selection translation. That way, when you're hovering on a word, it will translate by word, but when you're selecting some text, it will give you the translation of whatever you're selecting. It uses external translation machine like Google Translate, Deepl etc so it basically works the same way, what you select or hover is just like what you copy and paste into the translator. Pretty neat to me.
It also has several extra features, like Youtube dual subs etc but I personally don't use everything because I prefer 'one tool one function' tools so that it's not so overwhelming and easier to keep track if one malfunctions.
Speaking of malfunctions, lately the tools often experience errors and not showing you the translation, even though the translation machine websites are all okay. So that's why I use some backup tools just in case this one is not working right.
2. Edge Translate
Tumblr media
I used this one before I found the Mouse Tooltip one. It basically works the same way like Mouse Tooltip, but it doesn't have the translate-on-hover feature, so you have to at least select the texts you want to translate. But other things that I used this for is translating PDF. I tried to use some other popup translation extensions, but none of them can actually translate a PDF that I'm opening with chrome. I don't know the technical details but it seems that when you're opening a PDF with chrome it's like a different kind of chrome that doesn't have all your extensions. So what this Edge Translate does is it acts as a PDF reader so that you can use the translator as well (Mouse Tooltip actually also has this function so it easily replaces Edge Translate)
I haven't used this tool for quite a while and it seems they're closing soon?
3. asbplayer
Tumblr media
I use asbplayer when I'm learning with Youtube (they can also be used on Netflix but I'm not learning with Netflix right now). Some of its features are, it allows you to use dual subtitles, to use external subtitles for Youtube and Netflix, and it makes the workflow of making Anki cards easier. However what I personally use it for is only to make Youtube subtitles selectable so I can make use of the Mouse Tooltip Translator 😂
And I think that's basically all the tools that I use. I'm not including the tools or websites that I use to get contents that I actually use in my learning, maybe I will make a post about it too in the future. In the meantime, chau~

A great deal of politics is controlled by conservatives because POLITICAL PROCESS IS BORING AS HELL and artistic, creative, progressive change-the-world types do not want to sit through three hours of city council Roberts Rules of Order meetings mostly about approving the budget for the library special events committee or establishing a study group to verify which traffic lights might need replacing in the next four years.
The people who can sit through that, week after week, month after month... are present and ready when the vote comes to approve or deny the Special Committee on Health Education Supplemental Materials. (Oh did you not realize that was this year's sex ed content? Because you didn't go to six months of meetings while they hashed out the title one word at a time?) If you did know what they were, you also have to watch for "is this the committee in favor of sex ed materials for students, or a committee trying to restrict it all to signed-parent-permission-in-advance only?"
Some of the process is designed to keep out "the rabble." Some is, however, just how things work at that level - you have six hundred types of minutia and each of them gets three minutes in the spotlight, so the team that cares about this one thing prepares for it for a long time, and they're also trying to hide their strategy from anyone who actively opposes them - which means that anyone who doesn't care strongly one way or the other (what percentage of firefighters' pension fund should come out of the state general funds?) is left in the dark.
Pick a topic you care about, find the people who are in charge of that topic, and ask them about their work on it. Find out what changes are easy to make but nobody's pushed for them, and what changes are hard just because they're hard to explain, and which ones are hard because there's some faction that thinks this change would be the end of the world.
...and what changes are considered irrelevant because the existing rules aren't enforced anyway.
tl;dr
Politics is boring. This is how they keep it reserved to the current guys in charge.
Everyone who wants changes, wants to hear from people who support them.
It's not hard to get involved, just time-consuming.
And boring.
Did I mention boring? I didn't mention it enough. I promise. We get scandals because 90% of political process is mind-numbingly boring.
I say this as someone who likes applying styles to tables in Word for fun. Who likes OCR proofreading, looking for the "1"s that should be "I"s. No matter how much you like attention to tiny weird details... most of politics is boring, because most of it is not whatever tiny weird detail hunting you enjoy.
When I was in ninth grade I wanted to challenge what I saw as a very stupid dress code policy (not being allowed to wear spikes regardless of the size or sharpness of the spikes). My dad said to me, “What is your objective?”
He said it over and over. I contemplated that. I wanted to change an unfair dress code. What did I stand to gain? What did I stand to lose? If what I really wanted was to change the dress code, what would be my most effective potential approach? (He also gave me Discourses on the Fall of Rome by Titus Livius, Machiavelli’s magnum opus. Of course he’d already given me The Prince, Five Rings, and The Art of War.)
I ultimately printed out that phrase, coated it in Mod Podge, and clipped it to my bathroom mirror so I would look at it and think about it every day.
What is your objective?
Forget about how you feel. Ask yourself, what do you want to see happen? And then ask, how can you make it happen? Who needs to agree with you? Who has the power to implement this change? What are the points where you have leverage over them? If you use that leverage now, will you impair your ability to use it in the future? Getting what you want is about effectiveness. It is not about being an alpha or a sigma or whatever other bullshit the men’s right whiners are on about now. You won’t find any MRA talking points in Musashi, because they are not relevant.
I had no clear leverage on the dress code issue. My parents were not on the PTA; neither were any of my friend’s parents who liked me. The teachers did not care about this. Ultimately I just wore what I wanted, my patent leather collar from Hot Topic with large but flattened spikes, and I had guessed correctly—the teachers also did not care enough to discipline me.
I often see people on tumblr, mostly the very young, flail around in discourse. They don’t have an objective. They don’t know what they want to achieve, and they have never thought about strategizing and interpersonal effectiveness. No one can get everything they want by being an asshole. You must be able to work with other people, and that includes smiling when you hate them.
Read Machiavelli. Start with The Prince, but then move on to Discourses. Read Musashi’s Five Rings. Read The Art of War. They’re classics for a reason. They can’t cover all situations, but they can do more for how you think about strategizing than anything you’re getting in middle school and high school curricula.
Don’t vote third party unless you can tell me not only what your objective is but also why this action stands a meaningful chance of accomplishing it. Otherwise, back up and approach your strategy from a new angle. I don’t care how angry you are with Biden right now. He knows about it, and he is both trying to do something and not doing enough. I care about what will happen to millions of people if we have another Trump presidency. Look up Ross Perot, and learn from our past. Find your objective. If it is to stop the genocide in Palestine now, call your elected representatives now. They don’t care about emails; they care about phone calls, because they live in the past. I know this because I shadowed a lobbyist, because knowing how power works is critical to using it.
How do you think I have gotten two clinics to start including gender care in their planning?
Start small. Chip away. Keep working. Find your leverage; figure out how and when to effectively use it. Choose your battles, so that you can concentrate on the battle at hand instead of wasting your resources in many directions. Learn from the accumulated wisdom of people who spent their lives learning by doing, by making mistakes, by watching the mistakes of their enemies.
Don’t be a dickhead. Be smarter than I was at 14. Ask yourself: what is your objective?

AI Document Analysis: Transforming Data Extraction and Business Intelligence
In today’s data-driven world, businesses and organizations are constantly tasked with managing vast amounts of information. From contracts and invoices to legal documents and research papers, manual document analysis can be both time-consuming and prone to human error. This is where AI document analysis comes in—revolutionizing how we process, extract, and interpret information from written documents. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI), this technology has made document analysis more efficient, accurate, and scalable than ever before.
What is AI Document Analysis?
AI document analysis refers to the use of artificial intelligence technologies—such as natural language processing (NLP), optical character recognition (OCR), and machine learning (ML)—to automatically analyze and interpret the contents of documents. Unlike traditional methods that require human intervention to manually read and extract data, AI-powered tools can process documents quickly, accurately, and at scale.
AI document analysis can be applied to a wide variety of document types, including scanned files, PDFs, word processing documents, and emails. The technology can extract key pieces of information such as dates, names, addresses, contract clauses, and even sentiment, enabling businesses to make data-driven decisions more efficiently.
Key Technologies Behind AI Document Analysis
Natural Language Processing (NLP) NLP is a core component of AI document analysis. It enables the system to understand, interpret, and analyze human language in written form. Using NLP, AI can detect key concepts, identify relationships between words and phrases, and even perform tasks like sentiment analysis. This allows AI to “read” a document in the same way a human would, but much faster and without the risk of misinterpretation.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) OCR technology converts scanned images or handwritten text into machine-readable data. AI-enhanced OCR can recognize and extract text from scanned documents, PDFs, and even handwritten forms with high accuracy. OCR combined with AI can improve data extraction from non-digital documents that were previously inaccessible to automated systems.
Machine Learning (ML) Machine learning algorithms enable AI systems to continuously improve their accuracy by learning from new data. With each document processed, the system becomes better at identifying patterns, understanding context, and making predictions. Machine learning is especially useful for document classification, data extraction, and anomaly detection.
Document Classification and Categorization AI can automatically classify and categorize documents based on predefined parameters. For example, in a legal context, AI can categorize documents as contracts, memos, or court filings, making it easier to search and retrieve relevant files.
Benefits of AI Document Analysis
Increased Efficiency Traditional document analysis can be slow and labor-intensive, requiring employees to manually read, extract, and organize information. AI document analysis automates this process, drastically reducing the time spent on data extraction and allowing teams to focus on more strategic tasks. This leads to faster decision-making and enhanced productivity.
Improved Accuracy One of the biggest challenges in manual document analysis is human error. AI document analysis eliminates this risk by processing documents with consistent accuracy. With advanced machine learning algorithms, AI systems can even spot inconsistencies, errors, or missing information that might go unnoticed by human analysts.
Cost Savings By automating document analysis, businesses can reduce the need for manual labor, lowering operational costs. AI systems can handle a large volume of documents in a fraction of the time it would take a team of employees, which ultimately leads to significant cost savings over time.
Better Compliance and Risk Management In industries like finance, healthcare, and legal, compliance with regulations is critical. AI document analysis can help businesses ensure they are adhering to relevant laws and guidelines by automatically flagging documents that are out of compliance or contain risky language. Additionally, AI systems can help organizations stay on top of document expiration dates, renewal periods, and other time-sensitive details.
Enhanced Document Search and Retrieval Searching for specific information within a large volume of documents can be time-consuming and frustrating. With AI document analysis, businesses can implement advanced search capabilities that allow users to quickly find relevant data across a wide range of documents. This includes the ability to search for specific keywords, phrases, or even concepts, making it easier to access critical information.
Scalability AI document analysis tools are designed to scale with your business. Whether you’re dealing with hundreds or millions of documents, AI systems can process large volumes of data quickly and efficiently. This scalability ensures that businesses can handle growth without the need for significant increases in staffing or infrastructure.
Data-Driven Insights Beyond simple data extraction, AI document analysis can provide valuable insights by analyzing trends, patterns, and correlations across documents. For example, AI can identify frequently mentioned keywords or analyze sentiment across contracts to help businesses make more informed decisions. This can be particularly useful in legal, financial, or research-based industries.
Applications of AI Document Analysis
Legal Industry In the legal world, document analysis is essential for reviewing contracts, case files, and legal agreements. AI can automate tasks such as contract review, legal research, and case law analysis, saving law firms time and effort while increasing the accuracy of their work. AI can also help identify potential risks in contracts and flag clauses that may require further attention.
Financial Sector Financial institutions deal with vast amounts of documentation, from loan agreements and credit reports to regulatory filings and investment portfolios. AI document analysis can extract relevant data from these documents, improve compliance with financial regulations, and help financial analysts make faster, more informed decisions.
Healthcare In healthcare, AI document analysis can streamline the management of patient records, insurance claims, medical research, and more. AI can extract key patient information from medical records, ensuring that healthcare professionals have quick access to the data they need for patient care. It can also help automate the processing of insurance claims and manage regulatory compliance.
Human Resources HR departments handle a significant amount of documentation, from resumes and job applications to employee contracts and performance reviews. AI document analysis can help HR teams sift through large volumes of documents to find the most qualified candidates, ensure compliance with labor laws, and manage employee records more effectively.
Research and Academia Researchers and academics often need to analyze large volumes of scientific papers, reports, and articles. AI-powered document analysis can help by automatically categorizing and summarizing research papers, identifying key findings, and even cross-referencing data from multiple sources, enabling faster and more efficient research.
Customer Support and Service AI document analysis can be applied to customer service operations by analyzing customer support tickets, feedback forms, and communication logs. By automatically categorizing and tagging customer inquiries, AI can help customer service teams respond more quickly to issues, track common concerns, and improve the overall customer experience.
Challenges of AI Document Analysis
While AI document analysis offers many benefits, it’s not without challenges:
Data Quality: AI systems rely on clean, high-quality data to function properly. If documents are poorly scanned, handwritten, or contain complex layouts, the accuracy of AI analysis can be affected.

Lot of 'not quite right' in this thread.
The above Captcha type was not used to train AI (at least not by the company that made it). It's automatically generated, by compositing text and a few confusing lines, which means that the system that made it already knows what it says. It is purely for verifying that a user isn't a bot.
Later Captchas did help with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) training because they used words from books that were scanned in as part of a book archiving process, and were being converted from images to text. This made it so computers could read the contents of older books, which has upsides and downsides--it makes older texts publicly available and searchable on Google, but those results are likely locked in Google, rather than publicly available (even if the scanned works were public domain).
The most recent Captchas have been pictures of stop signs, fire hydrants, etc. This is definitely helping Google by providing training data for their self-driving car project. While there is public benefit to having self-driving cars, e.g. for disabled people, and while Google seems to be going about it more responsibly than, say, Uber or Tesla, it's still something that will be owned by Google rather than a public good.
Lastly, Captchas do have value. They are an important tool against spam and abuse, and the internet would be a much less pleasant place without them. This kind of attack against captcha has been possible for a while now, so Captchas have already moved toward behavioral analysys--Instead of just making sure you get the right answer to the fire hydrants question, they also watch your mouse movements and clicks and browser attributes while you answer, to see if they 'look' human. This sounds a little bit skeevy, but I honestly don't know of a better way--most of the proposed alternatives involve requiring some kind of license or proof of identity, which is much worse.

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
The U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday that it found that Owasso Public Schools in Oklahoma, where transgender teen Nex Benedict tragically died by suicide earlier this year, violated Title IX by failing to address pervasive harassment and creating a hostile school environment. Following complaints and an Office for Civil Rights investigation, the district must overhaul its Title IX processes and implement a series of corrective actions designed to protect LGBTQ+ students. The federal investigation uncovered a pattern of negligence: Owasso Public Schools had repeatedly failed to document or respond adequately to ongoing harassment and bullying directed at LGBTQ+ students, including Benedict. According to OCR’s findings, the district often handled reports informally without notifying families of their rights or offering supportive measures. OCR described the district’s response to harassment as “deliberately indifferent,” saying it failed to uphold Title IX’s promise of a safe, non-discriminatory learning environment for all students.
In its investigation, OCR uncovered numerous instances of anti-LGBTQ+ bullying that school officials failed to address. For example, a nonbinary student in the district endured frequent homophobic slurs, including antigay slurs from peers in hallways, classrooms, and cafeterias, with some students even throwing objects at him. His mother reported the harassment multiple times to school staff, requesting support and urging officials to use security cameras to identify the perpetrators. However, she said no action was taken, and neither the student nor his family were informed of their right to file a Title IX complaint.
Other students in the district described similar experiences. A student reported being called an antigay slur repeatedly by classmates who also questioned his gender identity. Despite notifying school officials, the response was limited to informal disciplinary action with no explanation of available Title IX protections. Another student encountered slurs written on a whiteboard in a classroom, and while the offensive words were eventually erased, no further action was taken.
[...]
Benedict, a 16-year-old student of Indigenous heritage at Owasso High School, had endured escalating harassment from classmates, reportedly targeted for his identity as transgender and the way he and his friends expressed themselves. On February 7, Benedict was involved in a physical altercation in a school restroom with three classmates who had reportedly mocked him, thrown objects, and hurled slurs. After pouring water on his bullies in an attempt to defend himself, Benedict was assaulted. Following this incident, he was taken to the hospital, where he messaged his family about the attack and ongoing harassment. Tragically, he died by what the Oklahoma medical examiner judged a suicide the following day. The circumstances of Benedict’s death have since fueled community outrage and highlighted the broader issues of anti-LGBTQ+ harassment, Oklahoma’s hostile political climate, and what advocates call the school’s failure to protect him.
Owasso Public Schools were found to be in violation of the US Department of Education’s Title IX by failing to address pervasive harassment and creating a hostile school environment, which led to the death of trans teen Nex Benedict earlier this year.

Tumblr media
Introduction:
As the digital transformation gathers pace, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology has become indispensable for the capture and processing of text from images, scanned documents, and handwritten notes. The efficiency of OCR Training Dataset systems is mainly dependent on the quality of the datasets used for model training. Globose Technology Solutions (GTS), specializing in curating and providing high-quality training datasets for OCRs, helps businesses create better AI-based text recognition models.
Why are OCR training datasets important?
An OCR training dataset generally consists of hundreds of thousands of images, together with corresponding annotated texts that assist machine learning models to learn and interpret various text types. These datasets play a major role in the applications of OCR technology, which include document automation, identity verification, digital archiving, and multilingual text processing.
Key benefits of having good-quality data for OCR training:
Greater Text Recognition Accuracy: A well-structured dataset ensures an OCR can better locate and extract text.
Multi-language Support: Diverse datasets guarantee recognition of multiple languages and scripts.
Better Handwritten Text Interpretation: Inclusion of handwritten text in datasets enables OCR to read cursive and varying handwriting styles.
Noise Reduction & Preprocessing: Well-prepared datasets furnish the model with the capability to filter out the noise, distortions, and irregularities faced while processing a scanned document.
Allows IT systems to recognize low-quality images: Datasets trained with the relevant application in view support processing of text from low, somewhat noisy, blurred, or distorted images.
