his south american life has taught him the most important thing in life: sunscreen. is always making sure you’re never running out and putting some on your pretty skin before you leave the door. researched and gets you a brand that fits your skin type and doesn’t leave white streaks.

amazing dancer. cumbia and merengue pro; his body moves like liquid, and his hand on your lower back will always show dominance through leading.

his morning breath is of dark and deep coffee, another habit he's picked up living and exploring a continent known for its roasts of beans. no cream, no sugar. black coffee with a side of milk bread and tooru is a happy man.

if there's one thing about oikawa, it's his loyalty. will go to the ends of the earth to assure you comfort in your relationship with him. will vow to have long and thoughtful conversations with you when things feel iffy. following this, i don't think he could be in a long-term relationship with somebody who isn't confrontational. how can he know that you're not just following his lead if you don't speak up and speak your mind? he traveled to the other side of the world because he wasn't comfortable where he lived; comfort was important to him.

i have two hc’s about paps and him: 1.) doesn’t care about paps when they’re on you and him, will make out with you so sloppily when drunk. there’s photos posted online of you wiping the spit from your lips after kissing him. 2.) does care and it’s an unhealthy amount. cares about his public image like his life depends on it, and you’re apart of his public image now. gets upset when you wear something casual, he’s bought you all these clothes, does he now need to dress you too?

STEP ONE: THE J-CUP.

The Japanese National Cup, or the J-Cup, is the largest street racing tournament in the country. It is annually held in Tokyo in an undisclosed ward for security, and is where the greatest street drivers in Japan can test their skills against other greats. It is considered the most technically difficult street racing ring in the world.

STEP TWO: THE SERIES.

Each of Japan's regions has its own racing culture, referred to as series. Scrimmages are often local, with tournaments being held both at district and city level.

The Kanto series is the biggest in the underground racing scene and includes the heart of street racing in Tokyo's Shibuya ward. This series brings together competitors such as Queen, the best female driver in Japan, and nationally regarded teams fronted by massive racers, such as Miya Atsumu's Inarizaki.

On the other hand, the Tohoku series has been consistently dominated by local legend Ushijima Wakatoshi. However, it possesses some very strong teams, such as Seijoh, lead by nationally regarded driver Oikawa Tooru, and recently rising dark horse team Karasuno. This season, team Seijoh has introduced new driver Luxe, which makes this series a worthwhile watch this year.

STEP THREE: PICK YOUR DRIVER.

queen's track; widely considered the best female street racer in japan. drives in the kanto series. currently in a year long underground winning streak, though she did place second at the last j-cup. always hunting for new ways to spike her dopamine levels, regardless of her safety. her corvette is her baby.

it’s amazing how oikawa can shift from pillow princess to dominant king, how one night he can be the biggest spoiled brat in the universe, demanding to be pampered and taken to climax, and another night he’s the most arrogant person alive, with the dirtiest, hottest mouth.

and iwaizumi can’t help but fall for that duality, for the way they’re so in sync that they don’t even need words to know what they’ll do. a glance or a small gesture is always enough.

the same days hajime wants to lock tooru in a tower and shower him with treasures are the days oikawa craves being spoiled, praised, and shielded from the entire world. the same days tooru wants to drive hajime wild and show him that there is comfort in his arms are the days iwaizumi just wants to disconnect from everything and focus on how oikawa makes him feel.

oikawa furrows his brow, turning to lie on his side and propping his head up on his hand. hajime stays on his back, his wide eyes fixed on the ceiling, nervously playing with the drawstring of his joggers.

their skin has cooled, their hair still damp from the shower. there’s a dull ache in oikawa’s lower back where iwaizumi’s heels had dug in too hard, and the fresh scratches on his back and the sharp bite on his neck throb beneath his skin. so he knows for a fact that something’s up.

"liar"

iwaizumi says nothing, just shrugs, still avoiding his gaze. oikawa pouts and places his hand over hajime’s, stopping the restless motion.

"iwa-chan, talk to me"

he resists, stubborn as ever, pursing his lips to hold it in. but tooru starts playing with his fingers, his thumb softly stroking the back of his hand. hajime’s breath hitch.

"please" oikawa lowers his voice, leaning in a little closer, bringing their joined hands to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss to the back of hajime’s hand. "hajime" he whispers against his skin, his eyes keenly watching as the resistance starts to crumble.

slowly, tooru moves down to his wrist, leaving another kiss on his pulse. and that’s when hajime finally breaks.

in an instant, iwaizumi crashes into oikawa, knocking the air out of him with an "off" as he’s pushed flat onto the mattress, and curls into his neck, wrapping him in his arms as tightly as he can. oikawa holds him just as tightly, enveloping him in his embrace while whispering that "it’s okay", "everything’s okay, iwa-chan, i'm here".

"it might not have been intentional," hajime speaks minutes later, breaking the silence with a slightly shaky voice "but this morning, one of the rookies, when i mentioned us, asked how it’s even possible to be together your whole life, if we really chose each other or if we just ended up together out of habit."

tooru blinks, his brow furrowing as a growing irritation settles in his chest.

"fucking what?" he snaps, and hajime burrows further into him.

"he said people who get used to each other do it because it’s easy, because they feel insecure and constantly need validation," hajime continues. "it got to me. i tried to ignore it, i really did, but it kept circling in my head, and it fucking scared me. i thought maybe we didn’t choose each other, that we just accepted it and that was it."

oikawa huffs, holding him tighter, already itching for the rookie’s name, last name, age, and address, because hurting hajime (intentional or not, physical or verbal or mental) awakens an overwhelming protective instinct in him. and he knows it’s the same the other way around.

"hajim—"

"and i got mad at myself," hajime cuts him off, finally lifting his head to look at him, his eyes glassy with tears that refuse to fall but still full of determination. "because i do choose you, tooru, just like you choose me. how the hell could i not choose you every damn day?" tooru’s eyes widen at his words, iwaizumi’s hands cradling his face with tenderness. "i’m with you because i love you, because you’re the best person i’ll ever know, because you understand me like no one else, and even being bored with you is fun."

"i don’t know why he said that," hajime shakes his head, his thumbs brushing against tooru’s cheeks as the other stares back with utter adoration. "getting used to someone isn’t a bad thing. it just means lives have molded to fit together, and mine has with yours since the day you came into the world, since you came to me."

every word settles between oikawa’s heart and soul, and he feels like the air he’s breathing is cleaner, the room is brighter, and he’s more certain than ever that hajime is his first and last love, his partner of life.

oikawa lets out an amused sigh and smiles beneath his glassy eyes.

"you know, i was supposed to be the one easing your insecurities today, iwa-chan. not the other way around" he teases, because that’s how they’ve always worked.

hajime blinks once before frowning, blushing, and flopping heavily back onto tooru with a grunt.

"i take it all back, idiot."

tooru laughs, loud, boisterous, and genuine, clinging to hajime like a koala, rubbing his cheek against the other’s temple.

"i’ll never get tired of choosing you, hajime" he promises sincerely, feeling all of iwa’s chiseled muscles relax completely in his arms. "i don't know the world without you by my side."

Will we get more Hinata and Daichi bonding in the next chapter? Do you have any headcanons for them that won't make it to the final cut?

In the next chapter it's hard to say... I don't want to spoil anything too much or give away my secrets because where would be in the fun in that, but... This will be one of the most important relationships going forward, especially through the third act. With the culmination of Daichi's personal daddy issues at the climax of Act 2, you can probably expect Hinata to take on some of the burden of the Main Character attention. Now, does this mean I will finally actually write the Kagehina storyline? 😛

As for unused headcanons... They're not so much unused as "unspoken," things that I simply never got a chance to say allowed but simply are true of the dynamics.

Hinata and Daichi's age gap isn't very wide, and in fact their age gap is *smaller* than the gap between Daichi and Ushijima. Daichi's father dying catapulted Daichi into an early maturity in which he was fully scavenging by the time he was 14. If Kaito had stayed alive, it's likely Hinata would have been considered Daichi's peer rather than a younger kid. (In general, Daichi probably would not have made the cut with Ushijima/Oikawa/Kuroo). That being said, it puts Hinata in a very similar position as Chiyo and Hayami, where there *should* be an informal, brotherly connection and instead is an authority figure/ father figure and it makes it difficult to navigate wanting to play around with someone like a brother while also craving their approval like a father. Daichi meanwhile did not properly develop siblings relationships and struggles with guilt in that respect where he knows he should feel more like a brother but cannot stop himself from behaving as their guardian, since its the role he's most used to. (If you wanna play a little mind game with me, track which kinds of scenarios he says "my sisters" in, and which he says "my girls," which is a kind of freudian slip on his part.)

That is all to say, Daichi knows that he sees Hinata almost as one of his kids, but he also knows he shouldn't see any of them as his kids. Hinata knew both his biological parents, and his sisters are his sisters. So he feels this immense guilt over wanting that kind of relationship with Hinata knowing it's probably overstepping and intruding on the memory of Hinata's own father.

A part of it is also driven by Daichi's desire to not have Hinata be forced to parent Natsu the way he had been, and he thinks if he can fill that guardian role he can spare Hinata having to grow up too fast. However the stuff he said in the chapter "Cascade," still is his dominant drive towards Hinata, where he sees Hinata as the perfect son that his father would have wanted. Where Daichi is continuously dragged back into the trappings of survival in this world and becoming more and more like his father, Hinata manages to continuously prioritize "fun" and good will and play despite The Horrors and Daichi is fairly certain thats who his father would have wanted him to be. So in some ways it may be "I know that I did not become the person my dad wanted me to be, but maybe I can still make him proud by making sure you fulfill your potential."

I imagine Hinata's father would have probably fought on Ittou's side during Act 1 if he'd been alive and definitely would not have liked Daichi.

In general I think Hinata's parents had struggled to assimilate in with the survivors camp and had probably been late additions that had never known Riku / did not adhere to the rest of the camp defaulting to the Sawamura family for guidance. They probably didnt get along with Kaito either.

I think Hinata has memories of Kaito that he falsely attributes to Daichi (riding on his shoulders, being given food or advice, etc) even though Daichi would have been simply too young to do any of those things at the time they were happening. He does not realize he even has any memories of Kaito or even that he ever interacted with him.

It will probably not be very many years until the general attitude towards both families is that they are one family. The Sawamura-Hinata clan, so to speak, will be considered one family unit even if there is no official mingling of the bloodlines. This would not have happened if even 1 of their 4 parents had stayed alive.
