2020-21 Russian Cup Series (National Qualifying Competitions)
Due to the effects of COVID-19 on the international skating calendar, Russian skaters are required to participate in the Russian Cup Series this fall in order to qualify for the Russian National Championships in December.
This post provides an explanation of the Russian Skating Federation qualifying structure and a list of links and information that will be updated throughout the season. The Russian Cup events have also been added to our Google Calendar.
Reference: Announcement See also: 2020-21 National Figure Skating Competitions, SYWTWFS Calendar
==========================================
QUALIFYING STRUCTURE
Senior and junior skaters can qualify for the senior Russian National Championships by competing at two of five events in the Russian Cup Series. As in the ISU Grand Prix series, points are allotted to final placements at each competition. Qualifiers are determined by the total number of points earned from two competitions up until the maximum number of competitors per discipline is filled. In the case of a tie, the tie is broken by combined total scores over the two competitions.
Normally, skaters are granted immediate qualification to the Senior National Championships if they have an assignment on the ISU Grand Prix or qualify to the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. However, in the 2020-21 season, all skaters were originally required to compete on the Russian Cup Series in order to qualify for the Senior National Championships, unless otherwise exempted by the federation due to extenuating circumstances.
The maximum number of skaters who can compete at the Senior National Championships is 18 men, 18 women, 12 pairs, and 15 dance teams. Skaters must be at least 14 years old to compete at the Senior National Championships.
==========================================
COMPETITIONS
Russian Cup events will be livestreamed by Russia's Channel 1. We will post more information on our blog regarding the National Championships.
Entries are subject to change.

Info about applying to PhD programs in pure math
This is... basically what it sounds like. I’m sure a lot of this is applicable to other PhD applications but I’m only very familiar with pure math. This is aimed at current seniors about to apply, but there is a section about prepping for applications in advance.
The highlights:
Recommendation letters are the most important thing. Most schools ask for 3ish. Try to get people who know you well, not just a student in the class. Someone you've conducted research with and one from a different institution are ideal if possible
Ask for rec letters at least a month before the due date is a good rule of thumb.
Research experience is probably the second most important.
Get the opinion of multiple professors who know you in order to build a list of potential schools. Then widdle it down to your will-actually-apply list (probably 8-14 ish).
My opinion but please apply to at least 3-4 safety/match schools. Even when you're fully qualified, acceptance rates are simply low enough that a bit of bad luck means getting rejected or waitlisted from a few of them.
Most pure math due dates are in early-mid Dec but a few schools are in Nov and some are as late as mid-Jan.
Schools will generally have their own graduate application portals. Some are better organized than others. Some require you to submit all your material before you can send a request for submitting rec letters so plan accordingly.
Acceptance letters will very slowly start going out in mid-Feb but the vast majority of programs won't send out anything until like, March and not be done until later than that. Accordingly, wait until at least mid-March to begin freaking out if you haven't been accepted anywhere.
You should 100% be expecting a tuition waiver and stipend from a program if you're applying for a PhD.
The rest of the posts is.... ridiculously long so I’m putting it under a cut. I mention things to do in advance to help you decide if grad school is right for you and things that make your application look good, give a full time line of the process, a list of things applications commonly ask for, and some miscellaneous notes. (The points above are repeated in more detail).
In addition, some links to other resources math students may appreciate:
an old post of mine about grad school apps (overlaps a lot and features some ranting from during the application process)
about REUs including my addition specifically about math ones
summer programs for undergrads that aren’t REUs by @counter-example and @jungleuniversity
Tips for prospective grad student visits
Also about prospective grad student visits by @thisurlhasbeenleftasanexercise
Also for context, I went to a large state school in the US for undergrad. I started as a CS major and added on math as a secondary major after my first year and dropped CS during third year. I’m primarily interested in discrete and algebra, though I have a significant topology background from undergrad too. I got most of my advice from people around the department, as I became pretty involved during my third year. Now, I’m a first year grad student at another large state school in the US, generally considered pretty decent though not a “top math program” at all. Not that much else has happened so far.
Things in advance (aka things to help you decide if grad school is for you and things that look good on an application)
Take the standard classes. For pure math, this is at least one semester of linear alg, abstract alg, and analysis each. Linear and analysis are also good for applied math but I'm not sure what else if anything is considered standard.
Take some grad classes if you have the option. Most people are not ready for this until senior year, but some do manage as juniors. Talk to people who know you well and the prof teaching the class before you do this though.
Try to get involved with research whether this is through independent studies at your home institution, REUs, internships, or other stuff.
Be involved in your department. This helps with getting you more personalized advice for applying.
The rough suggested timeline (assuming junior yr is your second to last year and senior is your last of undergrad)
Junior April: Take the math subject GRE so you can take it again in Sep or Oct if desired (perhaps not applicable atm). The general can be taken kinda whenever; I suggest fall of senior year.
Junior April/May: Start talking to professors/post docs/mentors/etc. about programs you may be interested in. Write/type it down. Don't worry if it gets long, you will shorten again later.
Summer: Do some research if possible; an REU or research at your institution (if an REU, also get your mentor's opinion on potential schools towards the end as well)
Senior Sep: Start whittling down your list. 8-14 seems to be the "normal" range of schools to apply to but some people panic and do more. Remember that asking for waivers is completely acceptable but applying is still just generally expensive (I spent around $800 for 10 schools)
Senior Sep: Apply for the NSF GRFP. You can apply as an undergrad senior and once during your first or second year of grad school if you didn't already get it. The due date is in mid-late OC but ideally you'll have a draft of your essays and ask for rec letters by the end of Sep, if not earlier.
Senior early Nov: Ask for rec letters if you haven't already. The rule of thumb is a month before the due date. Provide them a list of schools you want to apply to including due date and where/how to submit as soon as possible (as well as anything else they request of course; many ask for a resume and a draft of your personal statement).
Senior Dec-Jan: Submit stuff! Pure math programs typically have deadlines in Dec or early Jan. I think the big days are Dec 10th, Dec 15th, and Jan 15th but some are earlier or later. (applied math masters tend to be earlier I think; in Nov). I suggest putting them all into a list or calendar. In addition, some schools won't let letter writers submit until all of your stuff is submitted so start applications early, even if you don't finish them immediately.
Senior Feb: Programs will slowly start sending out offers in early Feb and pick up in mid Feb, but don't fret until AT LEAST the beginning of March! Grad programs are just way too slow at getting out offers for it to be worth worrying until then (and even then, it's definitely not time to panic but mathematicians are frequently anxious people so I get it). Waitlists are slower to come out; usually starting in early March. Also note, there are many programs that don't actually send out replies to everyone unfortunately.
Senior late Feb-early April: prospective student days! They might be online in 2021 unfortunately but try to attend whatever form they're in if you can (only one of my visits during spring 2020 was online since the others happen to be very early and safely beat covid in the US). Be warned, it's very possible to get offers of admissions and to visit very last minute. I do not have advice for how to make that less stressful.
Senior April 15th: Common reply deadline. If you got your offer in the first round or two, this is probably your deadline to accept. In addition, this means more offers will likely come out shortly after once more people have declined.
Senior summer: graduate. Send a completed, official transcript to your new institution. Check your new email account for stuff you're suppose to do. Some programs have some sort of program during the summer for in-coming students. Most places have graduate student training of some sort for a week or two before semester starts.
Some common things to be asked for in applications
Not actually a thing asked for but many graduate schools have their own portal for which you will have to make an account to submit an application. A few use a common system that kinda sort shares a database of accounts? Some are fine and some massively suck.
Personal Statement/Statement of Purpose: Occasionally called something else and once in a while actually separate things; will usually have a prompt of wildly differing specificity. Sometimes, the prompts come from the department itself and sometimes from the university's graduate school. I suggest having one or two "base" essays then tweaking them for each school. Sometimes a word/page limit is specified but if it's not, around 2 pages/1000 words is pretty reasonable.
Transcript. Some accept unofficial but some require official but generally not an unsealed one. I ordered myself one official transcript and sent it to multiple schools instead of paying for them to be sent to each school during the application process.
Resume or CV: Most ask for either a CV or is fine with either, in which case I give them my CV. I sent more or less the same one everywhere.
Some other notes
Yes, ask for application waivers. Just be polite about it.
Your goals for your essays are primarily to show that you're interested in math and math research and are capable of like…. writing things that make sense
Do not start out an essay with either "I loved math since I was little" or "I actually didn't like math when I was young" or any variations of those. (I had one essay that started with a mildly humourous anecdote from undergrad combinatorics and another that talked about how my undergrad department has greatly affected me).
You should 100% expect to get a tuition waiver and living stipend as part of a TA fellowship (or more rarely, an research fellowship) as part of your offer of acceptance for a math PhD program (pure or applied). Health insurance is also frequently part of the package. This is not true of masters programs unfortunately.
How schools do waitlists depend wildly though most don't have super long ones like prestigious undergrads do. If you're still interested in a place you're waitlisted at, follow their instructions to confirm your placement on the waitlist then wait until April before following up again, expressing your continued interest and asking for an update. You might even want to wait until around the common deadline, April 15th. The number of people who declined before April is just really really low so nothing really happens until then.

North or South?
With October 31st just around the corner, I think there’s something that should be noted by every witch, and not just those who are Wiccans.
The Wheel of the Year doesn’t apply to those in the Southern Hemisphere like it does for the North, simply because our seasons are opposites. So whilst the North are getting ready to celebrate Samhain (or Hallowe’en), witches in the South should be counting down to Beltane.
So who’s calendar is correct for me?
That will all depend on which side of the earth you’re on. Are you in Europe? Asia? America? Basically everyone welcoming autumn/fall? Or are you in the South Pacific, Oceania, or Africa? I’m making this post to be a guide of sorts.
North:
Imbolc: Feb. 2nd (1st in 2020) Ostara: Mar. 20-23 Beltane: April 30 (though it’s most commonly celebrated on the 1st of May) Litha: June 20-23 (24 in 2020) Lughnasadh: Beginning of harvest (around start of August) Mabon: Sept. 21-29 Samhain: 31st Oct Yule: Dec. 20-25
South:
Imbolc: Aug. 1 Ostara: Sept. 21-29 Beltane: Oct. 31st (my springtime) Litha: Dec. 20-25 Lughnasadh: Feb. 2 (1st in 2020) Mabon: Mar. 20-23 Samhain: April 30 Yule: June 20-23rd.
So if you’re in the southern hemisphere (like me), don’t worry about trying to keep up to our northern brethren with Samhain, because its spring instead of autumn. Don’t fret about being unable to do something that requires autumn, make your own way, remember that because the seasons are different it doesn’t mean that we cannot celebrate the calendars correctly. So while it’s almost Samhain up North, it’s Beltane down here. It’s time for us to welcome the summer as the North celebrates the end of harvest.
>I downloaded the Wicca Calendar from google play and that is where I found the information I needed to place onto this post.

The Importance of Retroactive Adoption of Retirement Plans
Implicit in planning for retirement is looking ahead. But thanks to the SECURE Act and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), it can pay to look to the past as well.
The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act of 2019 allows an employer to retroactively adopt a retirement plan after the close of the employer’s taxable year. For example, a calendar year taxpayer can adopt a plan in 2021 for last year (2020) as late as Oct. 15, 2021, assuming that that is the extended due date for filing the employer’s tax return for 2020. Under such a scenario, the plan is assumed to be adopted as of the last day of the employer’s prior tax year – i.e., Dec. 31, 2020.
The provision applies to plans adopted for taxable years beginning after Dec. 31, 2019.
This presents a great opportunity for some companies – particularly small businesses – in that it may help save them serious money in taxes by providing much-needed financial flexibility. If a given business made hundreds of thousands of dollars in calendar year 2020, they could potentially save anywhere from 30% to 50% in taxes by going the retroactive route.
In the past, we often saw clients rushing in November and December to sign their new plan documents before the Dec. 31 deadline. Now that pressure is off.
The clock is of course ticking – but it is not too late to take advantage of the SECURE Act provision. Indeed, according to reports, a significant number of employers took advantage of the provision earlier this year, following the close of their 2020 taxable years.
Even so, there had been some uncertainty over the how’s and why’s of completing Forms 5500 for the 2020 plan year. Form 5500, which must be filed electronically along with the appropriate schedules and attachments, is required for most employee benefit plans with 100 or more participants and small plans that don’t qualify for an exemption.
On Aug. 6, the IRS issued additional guidance to address that issue.
That guidance states that if, for example, an employer adopts a plan during the employer’s 2021 taxable year (but not later than the due date, including extensions, for filing the employer’s 2020 tax return) – and decides to treat the plan as having been adopted as of the last day of the employer’s 2020 taxable year – then the plan sponsor will not be required to file a Form 5500 for the plan year that begins during the employer’s 2020 taxable year.
Instead, the agency said, the first Form 5500 required to be filed with respect to the plan will be the 2021 Form 5500. (Note, however, that the plan sponsor will be required to check a box on the 2021 Form 5500 indicating that the employer elects to treat the plan as retroactively adopted as of the last day of the employer’s 2020 taxable year.)
In addition, if the plan is a defined benefit plan, the employer will be required to attach a 2020 Schedule SB to the 2021 Form 5500 or Form 5500-SF, as well as a 2021 Schedule SB. The instructions for the 2021 Form 5500 will further explain the filing requirements for plans adopted retroactively.
“We anticipate that similar rules will apply to the retroactive adoption of a plan pursuant to section 201 of the SECURE Act after an employer’s 2021 taxable year,” the IRS said.
Retro-adoption could be a good thing for many small businesses contemplating starting a new retirement plan. Consult with a reputable financial advisor for more details.

Which macOS version is installed?
From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You should see the macOS name, such as macOS Mojave, followed by its version number. If you need to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.

This example shows macOS Catalina version 10.15 build 19A583.
Which macOS version is the latest?
These are all Mac operating systems, starting with the most recent. When a major new macOS is released, it gets a new name, such as macOS Catalina. As updates that change the macOS version number become available, this article is updated to show the latest version of that macOS.

Download apple os mojave. If your Mac is using an earlier version of any Mac operating system, you should install the latest Apple software updates, which can include important security updates and updates for the apps that are installed by macOS, such as Safari, Books, Messages, Mail, Music, Calendar, and Photos.

So, you’ve decided to download an older version of Mac OS X. There are many reasons that could point you to this radical decision. To begin with, some of your apps may not be working properly (or simply crash) on newer operating systems. Also, you may have noticed your Mac’s performance went down right after the last update. Finally, if you want to run a parallel copy of Mac OS X on a virtual machine, you too will need a working installation file of an older Mac OS X. Further down we’ll explain where to get one and what problems you may face down the road.
A list of all Mac OS X versions
We’ll be repeatedly referring to these Apple OS versions below, so it’s good to know the basic macOS timeline.
Cheetah 10.0Puma 10.1Jaguar 10.2Panther 10.3Tiger 10.4Leopard 10.5Snow Leopard 10.6Lion 10.7Mountain Lion 10.8Mavericks 10.9Yosemite 10.10El Capitan 10.11Sierra 10.12High Sierra 10.13Mojave 10.14Catalina 10.15
STEP 1. Prepare your Mac for installation
Given your Mac isn’t new and is filled with data, you will probably need enough free space on your Mac. This includes not just space for the OS itself but also space for other applications and your user data. One more argument is that the free space on your disk translates into virtual memory so your apps have “fuel” to operate on. The chart below tells you how much free space is needed.
Note, that it is recommended that you install OS on a clean drive. Next, you will need enough disk space available, for example, to create Recovery Partition. Here are some ideas to free up space on your drive:
Uninstall large unused apps
Empty Trash Bin and Downloads
Locate the biggest files on your computer:
Go to Finder > All My Files > Arrange by size Then you can move your space hoggers onto an external drive or a cloud storage. If you aren’t comfortable with cleaning the Mac manually, there are some nice automatic “room cleaners”. Our favorite is CleanMyMac as it’s most simple to use of all. It deletes system junk, old broken apps, and the rest of hidden junk on your drive.

Download CleanMyMac for OS 10.9 (free version)
Download CleanMyMac for OS 10.10 - 10.14 (free version)
STEP 2. Get a copy of Mac OS X download
Normally, it is assumed that updating OS is a one-way road. That’s why going back to a past Apple OS version is problematic. The main challenge is to download the OS installation file itself, because your Mac may already be running a newer version. If you succeed in downloading the OS installation, your next step is to create a bootable USB or DVD and then reinstall the OS on your computer.
How to download older Mac OS X versions via the App Store
If you once had purchased an old version of Mac OS X from the App Store, open it and go to the Purchased tab. There you’ll find all the installers you can download. However, it doesn’t always work that way. The purchased section lists only those operating systems that you had downloaded in the past. But here is the path to check it:
Click the App Store icon.
Click Purchases in the top menu.
Scroll down to find the preferred OS X version.
Click Download.
This method allows you to download Mavericks and Yosemite by logging with your Apple ID — only if you previously downloaded them from the Mac App Store.
Without App Store: Download Mac OS version as Apple Developer
If you are signed with an Apple Developer account, you can get access to products that are no longer listed on the App Store. If you desperately need a lower OS X version build, consider creating a new Developer account among other options. The membership cost is $99/year and provides a bunch of perks unavailable to ordinary users.
Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. Newer versions are not available because starting Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.7, the App Store has become the only source of updating Apple OS versions.
Purchase an older version of Mac operating system
You can purchase a boxed or email version of past Mac OS X directly from Apple. Both will cost you around $20. For the reason of being rather antiquated, Snow Leopard and earlier Apple versions can only be installed from DVD.
Buy a boxed edition of Snow Leopard 10.6 Get an email copy of Lion 10.7 Get an email copy of Mountain Lion 10.8
The email edition comes with a special download code you can use for the Mac App Store. Note, that to install the Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac needs to be running Snow Leopard so you can install the newer OS on top of it.
How to get macOS El Capitan download
If you are wondering if you can run El Capitan on an older Mac, rejoice as it’s possible too. But before your Mac can run El Capitan it has to be updated to OS X 10.6.8. So, here are main steps you should take:
1. Install Snow Leopard from install DVD. 2. Update to 10.6.8 using Software Update. 3. Download El Capitan here.
“I can’t download an old version of Mac OS X”
Download El Capitan On Windows
If you have a newer Mac, there is no physical option to install Mac OS versions older than your current Mac model. For instance, if your MacBook was released in 2014, don’t expect it to run any OS released prior of that time, because older Apple OS versions simply do not include hardware drivers for your Mac.
But as it often happens, workarounds are possible. There is still a chance to download the installation file if you have an access to a Mac (or virtual machine) running that operating system. For example, to get an installer for Lion, you may ask a friend who has Lion-operated Mac or, once again, set up a virtual machine running Lion. Batman arkham mac download. Then you will need to prepare an external drive to download the installation file using OS X Utilities.
After you’ve completed the download, the installer should launch automatically, but you can click Cancel and copy the file you need. Below is the detailed instruction how to do it.
STEP 3. Install older OS X onto an external drive
The following method allows you to download Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.
Start your Mac holding down Command + R.
Prepare a clean external drive (at least 10 GB of storage).
Within OS X Utilities, choose Reinstall OS X.
Select external drive as a source.
Enter your Apple ID.
Now the OS should start downloading automatically onto the external drive. After the download is complete, your Mac will prompt you to do a restart, but at this point, you should completely shut it down. Now that the installation file is “captured” onto your external drive, you can reinstall the OS, this time running the file on your Mac.
El Capitan Software Download
Boot your Mac from your standard drive.
Connect the external drive.
Go to external drive > OS X Install Data.
Locate InstallESD.dmg disk image file — this is the file you need to reinstall Lion OS X. The same steps are valid for Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
How to downgrade a Mac running later macOS versions
If your Mac runs macOS Sierra 10.12 or macOS High Sierra 10.13, it is possible to revert it to the previous system if you are not satisfied with the experience. You can do it either with Time Machine or by creating a bootable USB or external drive. Instruction to downgrade from macOS Sierra

Before you do it, the best advice is to back your Mac up so your most important files stay intact. In addition to that, it makes sense to clean up your Mac from old system junk files and application leftovers. The easiest way to do it is to run CleanMyMac X on your machine (download it for free here).

If none of the options to get older OS X worked, pay a visit to nearest local Apple Store. They should have image installations going back to OS Leopard and earlier. You can also ask their assistance to create a bootable USB drive with the installation file. So here you are. We hope this article has helped you to download an old version of Mac OS X. FBAR filing deadline is April 15. Or Oct. 15
If it feels like you just filed required federal forms about your overseas financial holdings, you're probably right.
Last year, as we all were working to adjust to the myriad tax (and life) changes precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, lots of tax deadlines got pushed back. Some way back.
One of those was the filing extension for Form 114, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts, usually referred to as FBAR. Some individuals didn't have to submit this document until Dec. 31, 2020.
Now FBAR filers are facing a new deadline. Next week. On Thursday, April 15.
That's right. The May 17 automatic filing extension granted for federal tax returns and a few other tax responsibilities does not apply to FBAR.
However, if you dig a little deeper into the process, you'll discover that there's also an automatic extension until Oct. 15 for filers who can't meet next week's April 15 deadline.
Why the IRS April 15 notice? It's no secret that a popular way to avoid U.S. taxes is to stash money in an account (or two or …) abroad.
Uncle Sam tracks this taxable money held in foreign accounts through the efforts of two agencies, the Internal Revenue Service and its sister agency within the U.S. Treasury, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, usually referred to as FinCEN.
It's also no secret that the IRS would like to get all relevant tax material, foreign or otherwise, in and input into its systems as soon as possible. So it's no surprise, even though FBAR doesn't strictly fall under IRS jurisdiction, that it today issued an announcement that the FBAR deadline for 2021 is April 15.
But this filing, Form 114, is submitted to FinCEN, not (as just noted) the IRS. And FinCEN says in its publication on Filing Requirements For Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts that there's an automatic six-month extension for the filing.
Specifically, when the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015 changed the annual due date for filing FBARs to April 15, it also mandated the extension period.
So per that law, FinCEN grants filers failing to meet the FBAR annual April deadline an automatic extension to Oct. 15. Note that it's automatic. That means you don't have to file anything else to get the added six months.
Who has to file a FBAR? Even if you can't meet the April 15 deadline and will file by mid-October, you still should be aware of the FBAR requirements.
FinCEN has been collecting FBAR data per the Bank Secrecy Act since 1970. There are two key components, the individuals who must report and the amount of money that triggers the reports.
The law says a U.S. person must file a FBAR if —
They have financial interest in, signature authority or other authority over one or more accounts, such as bank accounts, brokerage accounts and mutual funds, in a foreign country, and
The aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.
The FBAR definition of person also is broader than what we tend to find in a standard dictionary. Under the law, a U.S. person is a citizen or resident of the United States or any domestic legal entity such as a partnership, corporation, limited liability company, estate or trust.
As for what constitutes a foreign country, the law says that's any area outside the United States, Indian lands as defined in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, and the following U.S. territories and possessions:
Northern Mariana Islands,
District of Columbia,
American Samoa,
Guam,
Puerto Rico,
United States Virgin Islands, and
Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands.
How much money counts? Now about FBAR's financial trigger. Again, there are two key words/phrases mentioned earlier, aggregate and any time during the calendar year.
This is a cumulative balance, meaning if you have two foreign financial accounts with a combined balance exceeding $10,000 at any one time in the tax year, both accounts would have to be reported.
Then the IRS and FinCEN also bring another consideration into play, maximum value. Uncle Sam wants this amount, too.
The maximum value of an account is a reasonable approximation of the greatest value of currency or nonmonetary assets in the account during the calendar year. "Periodic account statements may be relied on to determine the maximum value of the account," according to FinCEN, "provided that the statements fairly reflect the maximum account value during the calendar year."
If you have/had a financial interest in more than one account, each account must be valued separately.
When recording the maximum value of accounts, record all amounts as U.S. dollars rounded up to the next whole dollar, regardless of the cents. For example, $15,265.25 in an account at its highest point would be recorded as $15,266.
If an account is in non-U.S. currency, convert the maximum account value into dollars. You can use the Treasury's Financial Management Service rate for the last day of the calendar year.
What records are needed? You also must keep You must keep records for each account you must report on an FBAR that establish. The information required includes:
Name on the account,
Account number,
Name and address of the foreign bank,
Type of account, and
Maximum value during the year.
The law doesn’t specify the type of document to keep with this information. It can be bank statements or even a copy of the FBAR you filed. Just make sure your documentation has all the necessary data.
You must hang onto these records for five years from the due date of the FBAR.
How do I file FBAR? FBAR filing, or specifically FinCEN Form 114, is not filed with the IRS. It's filed directly with FinCEN.
It also must be filed electronically at FinCEN's BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) E-Filing System website. Below is the page you'll see when you head there.
And even though it's not an IRS form and it's only filed electronically, FBAR reporting earns a spot on the Tax Forms Fiesta! page.
What if you don't report an account? Even though FinCEN offers a filing due date cushion, it eventually wants your foreign account information.
If you fail to provide it, you'll pay.
If you are required to file an FBAR and don't do so, you could face a civil penalty of up to $10,000. The penalty could be waived if you can show reasonable cause for missing the filing.
But if you willfully fail to report an account or don't provide required account identifying information, the penalty price goes up. You could be subject to a civil monetary penalty equal to the greater of $100,000 or 50 percent of the balance in the account at the time of the violation.
Wait. Isn't there another foreign account filing? Some folks right about now are wondering about another foreign financial holdings tax requirement. That's the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act or FATCA.
FATCA requires certain U.S. taxpayers holding financial assets outside the United States to report those assets to the IRS on Form 8938, Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets.
Depending on your foreign holdings and amounts, you might need to file per FATCA, FBAR or both.
FATCA's Form 8938, when required, is sent along with your annual income tax return. And since this year, that deadline isn't until May 17, I'll blog about FATCA requirements in a future post.
Isn't it always fun to have something to look forward to, especially when it's a relatively arcane tax topic?

Life learnings and such, 46 years in
In the fall last year, I hit a mental wall. Starting from my father passing away in Dec 2019 to the pandemic challenges in spring and summer of 2020 rescuing the business I had spent almost a decade building, to the lockdown challenges with our family trapped at home, it all caught up with me. Having suffered through mental health challenges through my life — it runs through my paternal side of the family — in my 40s I am getting better at reading the signs of mental overload, though I still haven’t figured better ways to back off before these signs manifest.
I took two weeks off in Oct-Nov to detoxify myself from the sensory and emotional overload — and took it easier the rest of the year after — and those two weeks were some of the most present-in-the-moment days I have had in a long, long time. And through those pre-dawn clarifying type of days, I wrote these life learnings for me, most of them reflect in both my personal and professional lives. I have always written my way out of most of life’s curveballs, and this one came through typing on my iPhone notes app on and off for a few days.
You may find you own reflection in some of these.
Life is unfair, get used to it. That also is the point of it that drives you, in ways health and unhealthy.
Delayed reaction is the biggest power you have that you use the least.
Listening -- and not reacting -- is the lost art of our generation.
We’re not as strong as we think we are, and we’re not as weak as we think we are.
The ability to hold two contradictory thoughts at once is the biggest skill to aim for, and that takes time.
No one learns wisdom in the moment while they’re going through it, unfortunately it’s always on the other end of things. P.S.: we always start drawing lessons about life too early. I know, I know, the irony of this...
When everyone else takes a right turn, turn left. Turns out, I have taken this literally: this has been my default traveling style as well.
Curiosity is everything, so question everything but know that not everything has answers.
Believe the experts, they have spend time that you haven’t on the subject.
Read history books — particularly not written by winners of history — the key to curiosity and wisdom in life, in that order.
Kids are worth every pain they give you, for the joy they give you
Writing it out, long form, is always usually the best answer.
Always check your calendar the evening before.
Real time will kill you, the key is figuring out asynchronous life.
Demography is destiny, but reaching destiny takes a long time and it’s really messy while going through it.
Every setback *really* is a learning opportunity, and unfortunately we always learn that lesson after the fact
Nature is all around you waiting to welcome you back if you can stop for long enough.
The quiet competence usually doesn’t shout from the rooftops, it usually tiptoes in for those who stop to listen.
Your most lucid moments come usually when you aren’t ready. Have a pen/notebook as handy as you can.
Everyone always has things going on that you have no idea about and has nothing to do with you, practice kindness and generosity, the keyword being “practice”.
Everyone always uses too many paper towels.
You become what you watch, listen and read.
The answer, as always, lies in the middle even though the question — and change — almost always start from the edges.
Celebrate the small wins along the way, otherwise you will keep waiting.
Cheerleading others becomes the biggest joy in life after the early execution phase of your life, even if you don’t get anything in return for it.
Everyone’s path to the learnings usually differs, though they end up with mostly the same learnings of life.
We are all guilty of what we accuse others of.
There are enough decent people working selflessly in our communities, find them and amplify them as you can.
Faith is important, any kind of faith, and those who say otherwise are privileged enough to say so, be wary of them.
Read as widely as you can to connect all the dots. Connecting the dots is the biggest skill of all.
Always play hide-and-seek with your kid if they are asking.
Constraints do make you more creative, even if you don’t see it now.
It’s not the lens that make a great photograph, it’s your eye looking through that lens.
The commingling of personal and professional lives, how we live our lives these days, manifests itself in so many harmful ways through us and our circles we care for.
Self care, family & friends, and then work, in that order.
Therapy doesn’t give you answers, only the framework to get the answers yourself.
Asking the hard questions is one of the biggest fears of life to overcome.
We all catastrophize too much.
In the long term, consistently making small dents in the universe is a lot more satisfying than one big dent every so often.
As in life, so it is in business: everything runs in cycles, even if the other end of the new cycle is different from what it was before.
To sleep on it is *always* the best strategy.
If you don’t follow up, you never get the call back.
All-in-one solutions are not best at any one of the solutions they offer.
We are all dispensable, however indispensable we think of ourselves in the moment.
Becoming older *is* better.
In the end, everything works out, and if it hasn’t yet, it isn’t the end.

There are a series of numbers descending in each column and to the right it is marked the that these numbers reflect the start year of 2020. The January-February column of numbers is reflective of the day of the week on which January 1st falls, while March-December reflects when March 4th falls. Each list starts with the number 4 but soon diverges. The lists are composed of numbers 1 through 7 because there are only 7 days in the week. I have recorded them here in groupings of 4 at a time for ease of my own visual comparison. The Jan-February sequence is: 4671, 2456, 7234, 5712, 3567, 1345, 6123 where forward arrows indicates the pattern is plus 2 for the year subsequent the leap year, and plus 1 otherwise moving forwards in time, and going backwards in time applies a minus 2 on years that are 1 year subsequent to a leap year and minus 1 otherwise. The March-December sequence is: 4567, 2345, 7123, 5671, 3456, 1234, 6712 It’s not remarked upon in the chart but these two sequences are the same if the digits are rotated through by 23 digits. 30-second abstract:
The lack of conventional Black Friday visitors could also be a blow to many entrepreneurs, however there’s loads of hope and alternative. Foot visitors is anticipated to transform to on-line visitors, and given the rise of digital procuring holidays like Travel Tuesday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, there’s alternative for each business to profit from experimentation.
According to the Black Friday’s Big Test business report, peak season testing is flat for retailers, and they appear to be relying on the identical methods that labored in earlier years — not totally addressing in the present day’s disrupted procuring atmosphere.
It would possibly look like journey would wrestle probably the most within the COVID-19 period, however information reveals some modern experiments and fast pivots are serving to business entrepreneurs promote this season.

The 2020 peak procuring season could also be unconventional, but it surely’s not not possible for entrepreneurs to navigate. And Brooks Bell’s information reveals prospects will be extraordinarily aware of small modifications — the one failed technique this season might be altering nothing in any respect.
It Black Friday and an unpredictable and unprecedented vacation procuring season is formally underway, leaving many entrepreneurs to solely guess about one of the best ways to succeed in prospects in radically altered retail, journey and monetary environments.
Crowds and traces searching retailer home windows on Black Friday are certain to be smaller because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead, all peak season advertising efforts — which we outline because the interval between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 — will must be retooled and retargeted to work in browser home windows.
According to new analysis on the 2020 vacation procuring season, entrepreneurs throughout varied industries are sticking to well-worn methods this season as a substitute of attempting out new strategies, and it isn’t working.
There has been an 11% lower in profitable assessments because the begin of the pandemic, indicating the everyday ache factors prospects face when procuring on-line have modified, requiring testing groups and entrepreneurs to enhance their on-line experiences.
We’ve decided this by aggregating the outcomes of our shopper’s experiments over time, and parsing which experiments achieved a constructive consequence. What’s extra, buyers have a totally completely different set of feelings and motivators as they spend this season, and well being and security are on the forefront.
Thankfully, a pivot continues to be attainable for advertising efforts, even virtually a month into the height season. An evaluation of information from lots of of organizations throughout hundreds of promoting assessments and experiments reveals that whereas buyer priorities are altering, there are nonetheless loads of alternatives to interact them efficiently within the weeks forward.
Winning methods for vacation 2020 advertising
The lack of conventional Black Friday visitors could also be a blow to many entrepreneurs, however there’s loads of hope and alternative. Foot visitors is anticipated to transform to on-line visitors, and given the rise of digital procuring holidays like Travel Tuesday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, there’s alternative for each business to profit from experimentation.
Data from illuminate — an experimentation and insights software created by Brooks Bell for shoppers and testing groups of all sizes to use to trace and measure the success of promoting assessments — backs up this optimism.
By making use of the next data-backed insights, entrepreneurs in retail in addition to journey and finance can experiment with methods to re-engage prospects this season and use these classes to return out even stronger subsequent peak season.
Insight #1: Retailers test easy changes to ease shopper anxiousness
According to the Black Friday’s Big Test business report, peak season testing is flat for retailers, and they appear to be relying on the identical methods that labored in earlier years — not totally addressing in the present day’s disrupted procuring atmosphere.
On the entire, information reveals buyers are responding to ecommerce and procuring course of modifications that ease anxiousness:
One in 5 experiments run by retailers throughout Black Friday and the vacation season basically have been designed to alleviate shopper stress, and these experiments have the best win price. Retailers can, for instance, embrace calendars on their websites that inform prospects the final day they’ll buy items that may arrive in time for the vacations. Or, they’ll show info on contactless return and alternate procedures to create much less hesitation for buyers who don’t wish to inconvenience a beloved one if a present must be returned.
Retailers should additionally keep in mind that the sorts of merchandise prospects are shopping for this vacation season are certain to be completely different. Houseware retailers, for instance, are more likely to see a drop in gross sales of enormous place settings or different merchandise used to host massive gatherings. In the quick time period, retailers want to put additional scrutiny on what gadgets are on sale, and the place they’re featured on their homepages. Longer time period, these retailers must maintain detailed and data-backed notes concerning the outcomes of the experiments this 12 months, in order that they’ll replicate again on the background and outcomes of these gross sales subsequent 12 months.
Insight #2: Travel entrepreneurs lean in to testing seamless journeys and stays
It would possibly look like journey would wrestle probably the most within the COVID-19 period, however information reveals some modern experiments and fast pivots are serving to business entrepreneurs promote this season.
Historically, journey has examined easing the psychological effort it takes for patrons to buy, and we anticipate to see that development proceed within the following kinds:
Hotels have drastically modified their messaging because the pandemic began. Many commercials and commercials characteristic contactless entry, a much bigger focus on roadside motels and imagery that reveals sanitation procedures. All of those methods present the shopper how secure and hassle-free journey can nonetheless be — and who isn’t no less than dreaming a couple of quarantine getaway?
Travel entrepreneurs should additionally test higher digital supply of the perks and advantages the hospitality business gives. Hotel room facilities, in-flight providers and different journey experiences are sometimes tough to wrap up in a bow. This 12 months, will probably be much more tough to provide top-notch buyer experiences when in-person interactions can’t occur. Marketers searching for artistic methods to interact think about methods to tie a bodily present to purchases like resort reservations, or discover methods to ship digital content material about an upcoming journey which might maintain the shopper engaged main as much as their journey.
Insight #three: Financial entrepreneurs test extra handy methods to buy and give
This 12 months has led to a brand new monetary actuality for many individuals. Data reveals monetary entrepreneurs at banks are testing methods to ease buyer anxiousness, fears centered round cash and the psychological burden of buying. Consider the next:
Financial entrepreneurs ought to guarantee monetary merchandise are simpler to purchase and give as items. In unsure occasions, extra conventional items like financial savings bonds or money are enticing to buyers, and entrepreneurs ought to test higher methods to get these product choices in entrance of shoppers as they log into their banking portals. When prospects log in, they need to see merchandise that may make their procuring expertise simpler this season, like low-interest bank card gives or cash-back incentives. Additionally, monetary advisors and tax professionals can capitalize on the chance to succeed in thousands and thousands of Americans who need to navigate an altered financial system.
To ease the psychological effort and anxiousness of shoppers, entrepreneurs ought to think about whether or not third-party monetary info can assist make prospects’ procuring seasons simpler. Featuring credit score scores, fraud safety instruments or financial savings calculators on homepages or buyer emails is a good place to start out — any monetary peace of thoughts that may be provided this season is a successful technique.
The 2020 peak procuring season could also be unconventional, but it surely’s not not possible for entrepreneurs to navigate. And our information reveals prospects will be extraordinarily aware of small modifications — the one failed technique this season might be altering nothing in any respect.
In reality, 2020 might show to be the very best time to test long-held assumptions or hypotheses about buyer audiences — and carry these classes into 2021.
