The History of Korean male groups’ evolution over time -> Part 2
Starting the exploration of the History of Korean Male Groups, it's important to acknowledge potential inaccuracies in my posts. This is primarily due to the challenging task of officially certifying a 'First' in this realm, given the absence of a reliable database and prevalence of misleading promotional assertions.
Delving into the early records of Korean Male Groups, there are numerous valuable albums that have been overlooked or remain obscure to this day. Despite the uncharted and turbulent nature of Male Group album history, I am committed to presenting a comprehensive overview spanning from the 1920s to the 2010s.
Introduction - Small summary of Korea under Japanese rule (Before Liberation).
From 1910 to 1945, Korea was ruled as part of the Empire of Japan under the name Chōsen (朝鮮), the Japanese reading of Joseon. Japan first took Korea into its sphere of influence during the late 1800s, after being forced into isolationism by the United States in the Perry Expedition.
Japan then modernized under the Meiji Restoration and eventually opened Joseon with the unequal Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876. Japan then made sweeping changes in Korea, including a process of Japanization, which led to the loss of cultural artifacts, demolished historic buildings, and construction of infrastructure and industry. This led to the birth of the Korean independence movement, which acted both politically and militantly within the Japanese Empire.
During World War II, Japan mobilized around 5.4 million Koreans to support its war effort, forcing many to work in poor working conditions. Some Japanese politicians and scholars deny that Koreans were forced laborers, while others claim they were "requisitioned against their will."
After the surrender of Japan, Korea was liberated, but relations between Japan and South Korea have oscillated between warmer and colder periods due to conflicts over the historiography of this era.

You could tell me this song was produced by Shin Joong-hyun and I would believe you (idk if he did but this is peak 70s Korean psychedelic rock, with the orchestra, abss line, harmonies etc etc). Also, the frontman Baek Sunjin wrote this song for his girlfriend, because he was too shy to show his love to her publicly, so he wrote this song and played it at her skating rink. HOW FUCKING CUTEEEE
Tumblr media
Oh and also this is probably Lee Soo-man (YES, THE LEE SOOMAN OF SM ENTERTAINMENT) singing on this track. He was part of the group around this era, but then went into the music business. I'm so curious to know what his former April And May bandmates thought or even think of him now and his whole debacle.

i tthink edgey would listen to punk tactics and mitski interchangeably
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I only heard of Mitski by Tumblr osmosis, never listened to it. I only know people associate it with trauma and mental illness...

okay do you guys think edgeworth would listen to fnaf music. because i think he would listen to fnaf music.
it probably wouldn't be intentional though. like he's shuffling a house music playlist and spotify reccommends him you can't hide or something and he's like "hmmm. this artist is particularly intruiging let me check out their discography" and then he goes down a rabbit hole and suddenly he has a playlist full of fnaf music and he doesn't even know what fnaf IS.
and one day he's hanging out with maya he puts on the playlist and she goes "oh! i didn't know you liked fnaf edgeworth!" and he says "what is this fnaf you speak of" and shes just like "😶😶‍🌫️. WHAT" and then she gives him a two hour presentation on fnaf lore and makes him play the games etc etc thank you for coming to my ted talk 👍

my favorite fellow peeps who make themselves sick over the tragedy of the high cloud quintet and especially yingxing who became blade
I bring ya the Korean original musical Frankenstein (프랑켄슈타인) by Wang Yong-beom and Brandon Lee
It's loosely based on the Mary Shelley novel and actually goes almost balls to the wall off the rails unhinged plot-wise, but it does it so WELL and it's made me absolutely insane over the past three days or so and I didn't even like the novel so you know it's good
I'm not fluent in Korean (though I do understand a fair amount) but the songs slap so fucking hard (y'all music truly needs no translation for its emotions to be felt)
And for those songs that do have translations on YouTube,
GOD
WOW
basically, for the uninitiated to either piece of media,
disaster gay(s) decides resurrecting someone they loved from the dead is a good idea and ofc that goes horribly wrong for them and ruins their life and kills/destroys everyone they held dear and changes them irreversibly and they become everything they feared :)
------------
A few songs + English subtitles to get you started (23:16):
youtube
------------
Also it's actually being performed rn in Korea since this is the 10th anniversary of the musical
So a couple of the main actors were interviewed recently by an entertainment show and they got to each perform a song from the show (linked below) (no subtitles unfortunately, but there are other videos of these songs on YouTube by other people that DO have subtitles) (I just thought these were best visual + audio quality)
The Great History of the Creation of Life Begins by Shin Sung-rok (위대한 생명창조의 역사가 시작된다 by 신성록) (5:30)
Victor Frankenstein sings abt defying God and shit while creating his creature/monster from his dead (boy)friend
BANGER ass set & special effects
youtube
I am the monster by Park Eun-tae (난 괴물 by 박은태) (6:18)
About the monster's loneliness and longing to be loved but even his body is not his own and he's been rejected by his own creator :(
Also THE Park Eun-tae's vocals and acting (worth a watch for that alone)
TW for fake blood & stitches just in case

Learning Korean through songs with you all - Ep.1
So I was listening to Trot Queen Ha Choon Hwa's "Good Job/Well Done" (잘했군 잘했어) a few days ago, and they use a lot of old korean grammar and some obscure words, and I didn't really understand it - so I'll learn with y'all!
Here goes my strategy I had shown y'all a few posts ago
Text :
It's long as hell, it's also a duet so I gotta split it up into Choonhwa (C) and Bongsan (the guy that sang with her) (B) first to get the conversation between them. I'll do a few steps in one, mark the words I don't know, and get the translations-
(Verse 1)
Tumblr media
(I should have guessed that. I knew 쌍 means double of something, like 쌍둥이)
(뒷 means "at the back of smth" and 뜰 means "field", so I guess this means "backyard")
B: 보았지.
C: 어쨌소?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Both kinda make sense here, but eventhough 어쩌다 as an adjective is "by chance" or "accidentally", as a verb, it means "to be some sort of way", i guess. Also adding 소 at the end of a question was standard practice back then, I guess. The halmeonis still do speak that way.)
Tumblr media
(So it just is a fancy or old fashioned way to say "to keep myself healthy" or to "care for my body")
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Verse 3 - version 1, there's three different versions from now )
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Verse 4, version 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Verse 3, version 2 - the one I'm used to)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Pt 4 version 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Damn, I never knew I'll be learning english here too)
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So now, it's time for translating!
(Verse 1)
C: 영감~ My husband~ B: 왜 불러? What happened? Did you see the pair of chicks that were running around the backyard? B: 보았지. I saw them. C: 어쨌소? What happened with them? I ate them to take care of my health because I'm growing old C: 잘했군, 잘했어 Good job, well done C,B: Good job, you did well, well done C: That's my husband! B: 마누라~ My wife~ C: 왜 그래요? Why? Did you see the spotted bull that we had in the barn? C:보았죠 I saw it B:어쨌나? What happened with it? I gave it to my brother's in-laws as a seed investment B:잘했군, 잘했어 Well done, good job B,C: Well done, good job, you did well B: Yes, that's my wife C: 영감! My husband! B: 왜 불러? What happened? Did you get the 100,000 won lease back after our guest house room cleared? B: 받았지 I got it C: 어쨌소? What did you do? I gave it to the bank as a savings payment to pay for a mill C: 잘했군, 잘했어 Well done, good job C,B : Good job, well done, you did well C: That's my husband! B: 마누라~ My wife~ C: 왜 불러요? Why? Did the man who lives in Bokdeokbang come to leave his Janggi drums? C: 왔었지요 He did. B:뭐랬나? What did he say? That he'll stop Janggi and will go to start learning Taekwondo B: 잘했군 잘했어 Good on him, good job B,C: Good job, well done, good job B: That's my wife! C:영감? Husband? B: 왜불러? What happened? Did you get the 100,000 won lease back after our guest house room cleared? B: 받았지 I did C:어쨌소? What did you do? This is such a full circle moment for me! Oh my god.
Ten year old me would never in her wildest dreams would have thought that the very first movie that brought her to tears (that was showcased in her school) would be a Korean movie (found out today) and years later, I would have consumed so much of Korean content.
The movie has been so close to my heart. It was always meant to be!

This was absolutely "the song" back in 2010! Here's my translation of "그땐 그땐 그땐(Then Then Then)" by 슈프림팀(Supreme Team). It features Young Jun from "Brown Eyed Soul". Enjoy!
