Rúben Dias x Model!Reader- Life in Manchester Headcannons
Warnings: Slight reference to sexual activity at the end and possible eating disorder (nothing triggering)
Tumblr media
Enjoy guys 😉
Part 2 to Rúben Dias x Reader- Meeting Headcannons
• You never intended to become one of the most popular Manchester City WAGS.
• When Rúben signed with Manchester City you agreed to return with him to the UK- to the place where your Portuguese mother and British father live.
• You knew Bernardo from Rúben playing for Portugal. When he started going out with Inês you became besties and now are attached at the hip.
• When Carlota was born you became the best auntie ever!
• Double dates with Bernardo and Inês
• You’re close with all the WAGS but especially with Olivia, Isabel and Sasha. Inês, Olivia, Isabel, Sasha and you are notorious for your fun nights out which end up with your boyfriends picking you up.
• On Instagram, style accounts appear where your outfits from photoshoots, Rúben’s matches and fan photos are posted.
• Attending every single home game at The Etihad, often with Inês but sometimes other WAGS join you.
• Wearing Rúben’s shirt or something in Man City blue to show your support.
• Rúben and you are often called relationship goals; the strong, commanding footballer and the beautiful, clever model.
• When City won the treble you were crying with happiness for Rúben and the team.
• When all the the family members went on the pitch at the Champions League, Rúben just picked you up and kissed you in front of the whole world before embracing his mum, dad and brother.
• ‘I’ve never been prouder of you Ruby’
• ‘Te amo meu amor’
• ‘também te amo, Rúben’
• Rubén’s UCL medal takes pride of place on the sideboard in your apartment with his many other awards/trophies.
• Behind his awards is a large framed photo of your first Vogue cover hanging on the wall.
• ‘If I can have my football awards then you can have your first big magazine cover on the wall Gatinha’
• You were present when Rúben threw up in Jack’s mums bag. You’ve got good blackmail material now 😂
• While Rúben doesn’t drink, you love a fancy cocktail or champagne to celebrate a new photoshoot campaign or magazine cover.
• Rúben tries to convince you to drink less, he means well but it sometimes annoys you
• You both eat extremely healthily and go to the gym most days but Rúben makes you look like a couch potato sometimes.
• He’s a bit of a food critic, your cheat days often consist of things like pot noodles or iced coffees. Rúben thinks it’s a waste of calories and that you should eat something that isn’t just caffeine and chemicals.
• Rúben is also a critic of the model diet. He thinks that you don’t eat enough and is often encouraging you to eat more and telling you off when you don’t.
• You’re pushing your food around your plate. Food that Rúben cooked. His eyes are focused on you from across the table.
• ‘Not hungry?’ His brown eyes gaze at you ‘have you already eaten?’
• ‘I had some almonds for breakfast’
• He frowns deeply ‘you know that isn’t healthy meu amor’
• He may disapprove of your eating habits but he won’t shout at you about it.
• When Rúben is doing ‘homework’ by watching certain football matches for upcoming games, you sit with him. His arm is around you, with you curled up into his side.
• It often leads to neck kisses which lead to…your bedroom 🥰

Strawberry Kisses
Summary: The reader has new Chapstick and Sanji can’t figure out the new flavor.
Character(s): Vinsmoke Sanji
Song Inspiration: Strawberry Kisses by Olivia Herdt
Word count: 2.6k
Notes: tbh I’m not sure how I feel about this but imma post it anyways. When I was writing it I was reading Host Club sooo Sanji might act a bit like Tamaki because I can’t help see them as the same person 😭
━━☆⌒*.
It’s the same routine for every morning. Sanji would wake up early to cook breakfast for the crew while he leaves his lover asleep. He would love to wake her up to have someone to talk to this early in the morning but he knows well enough not to wake Y/n this early in the morning. The blonde cook lingers in bed for a moment longer looking down at his sleeping lover. They didn’t have a big bed but that didn’t seem to matter, they were all upon each other. Y/n was curled up into his chest while one of his arms draped over her hip. It was a good thing the 2 of them don’t move much when they sleep. Sanji pulled her closer and watched her steady breathing. Her h/c hair was an absolute mess and her mouth hung open, leaving a small trail of drool onto the pillow. Saying she looked like a mess would be an understatement but that what he loves about her.
Sanji felt so bad leaving. He didn’t want to leave her alone but someone’s gotta cook the food for their rowdy crew. With one last squeeze, which caused a small groan to escape from Y/n’s lips, Sanji softly kissed her exposed forehead and finally began to his day. An hour without Y/n is never that bad. And soon enough an hour came and gone like it was nothing. One by one his crew mates began to fill the kitchen. Sanji finished up the last of the food preparation, making sure to leave a small port soon to the side for Y/n. She’s always the last one to wake up in the morning, and because the food never last longer than 5 minutes, he always make sure Y/n has food before anyone else. Y/n finally made it to the lively kitchen, upon seeing her still half asleep mood his face lit up. She just as beautiful as ever, even if her hair looks like it hasn’t been brushed in days. Sleep still clouded her actions as she stumbled her way to the hip of her lover. It took her a while for her eyes to adjust but once they did and landed on Sanji, her face lit up.
“Mornin’!” Y/n giggled, pressing herself up against the male wanting to feel his body warmth again. Sanji scoffed at the action as her took on of his arms and snaked it around her waist.
“Did you sleep well, princess?” Sanji questioned as he leaded down and gave her a small peck on her lips. Y/n scrunched up her nose for the early morning touch before she smiled and returned the peck.
“Amazing, as always.” She sighed, wiggling out of his grasp so she can finally eat breakfast. The 2 of them has been dating for a while. And of course, that doesn’t mean didn’t have a rocky start. With Sanji’s obsession with girls it was bound the be a struggle. Luckily, the love Y/n felt for him was strong enough to look past it. They had worked though it and seeing how Sanji‘s obsession with girls isn’t gonna stop anytime soon, Y/n trust Sanji not to do anything (thankfully Y/n doesn’t get jealous easily either). Surprisingly, it’s been smooth sailing so far, give or take.
With Sanji being a passionate lover and all, it was also no surprise that he knew almost everything about Y/n. From her favorite foods (duh) to her secrets to and even when it was her time of the month. It was creepy but in a nice way. And so it’s safe to say that he also knows what her kisses taste like. In the morning her kisses always taste like mint because of the chapstick she puts on after brushing her teeth. It was probably the best thing in the world to the lovesick cook, he had easily got use to it when they started dating. However this morning was different, she didn’t taste like the normal mint, she tasted fruity. His blue eyes trailed over to his lover who now sat at the table with the others, talking about todays plans. With the flavor still lingering on his lips, he continued to try and figure out what the flavor could be. His eyes watched as her glossed lips curled into a smile, as if she was teasing him. Taking a moment to try and figure out what the flavor is himself, he let out a soft hum as he joined Y/n at the table. At first she didn’t bother to look over seeing how she was enjoying her conversation with Usopp and Nami, but once Sanji’s large hand rested on her thigh, she glanced over at him. Sanji did not waste a minute, once Y/n looked over at Sanji, he attcked her lips once again. She let out a small yelp from the sudden action and placed her hand on his chest to try and push him back.
Nami and Usopp, who were both having a conversation with Y/n simply rolled their eyes at the couple before continuing their conversation without her. It common to find Sanji doing those type of things. Random kisses and hugs, random burst of ‘I love you’, cheesy date nights. It doesn’t take a genius to learn he’s a hopeless romantic. Of course that doesn’t stop the crew from reacting themselves. Zoro would complain about it, Nami and Usopp would yell at him for when he gets to cheesy, or when he makes Y/n embarrass, or does it at an inapporapte time, and Robin, Franky and Brook would always comment on how flustered Y/n ends up getting. Even if it does annoy the others and makes Y/n embarrassed sometimes, they all know he means well. Finally Y/n efforts of pushing against him payed off. Sanji finally back off of Y/n giving her space and her mouth back so she can eat. Catching her breath, Y/n looked at Sanji with her eyebrow raised, “What’s this about?”
“Your chapstick...It’s different.” Sanji muttered, trying to focus on the flavor. He was a cook for god’s sake and he can’t even figured out a the flavor of Y/n chapstick even if it is artificially flavored. Adrianna saw the look of confusion on his face as he was deep in thought. It was rare to see Sanji like this, normally he would swoon over it and make those weird faces but this time was different. His swirled eyebrows furrowed together and his blue eyes staring at her lips, hoping to get an answer. It was one of the very rare moments when Sanji’s actually cute.
“Yeah, I ran out of the other one. You like it?” Y/n giggled, as she turned back to her food.
“I’m not sure. What flavor is it?”
“Hmm.” Y/n hummed wondering if she should tell him or not. There were pros and cons of telling him and not telling him. If she doesn’t tell him then she can see this rare cute side of Sanji that she doesn’t get the see often but if she doesn’t tell him then she has no idea what is gonna happen if she doesn’t. The last time Y/n tried, keyword tried, to tease Sanji they end in the bedroom for the rest of the night. It safe to say it was a long night that night. But on the other hand, Y/n doesn’t get to see Sanji cute like this often, so even if they end up in the bedroom, it would be worth. A small smirk played on her lips as she looked back up and Sanji, “I’m not telling..”
ミ☆
Y/n was surprised she was able to last this long.  Ever since Y/n brought up the challenge, it was like every chance Sanji got the 2 of them were kissing.  When they pass each on the ship, when Y/n asks for a glass of water, even when she was in the middle of training he found some way and excuse to kiss her. What really got to her the most was she never knows what type of kiss it was gonna be: small and quick or deep and passionate. If she knew he was gonna be the egar to figure it out she would’ve just told him. Luckily lunch was right around the corner so Sanji had to spend time preparing food for the others, leaving Y/n alone for a while, even if it’s only 30 minutes. The h/c colored girl was more than happy to take this time to relax with Nami and Robin. Nami was sunbathing and Robin was reading, Y/n also wanted to join Robin in reading however the book she picked laid in her lap, untouched. Instead all she ended up doing it staring off into the distance running a finger along her lips.
“...I think they’re swollen.” Y/n muttered to herself as she dropped her hand to her side and laid down. She clearly bit off more than she can chew. Y/n meant to keep the comment to herself seeing how she got herself into this mess yet Robin clearly heard her.
“Are you feeling ok, Y/n?” She glanced over at her younger friend and questioned. Noticing that Y/n seemed to be lost and thought, Robin didn’t want to bother her so she went back to reading her book until Y/n let out a heavy sign.
“My lips are swollen and it’s only noon. This is not how I’d imagine it.” Y/n explained as she looked over to the other girls.
“You’re dating Sanji, how did you think it was gonna go?” Nami scoffed as she lifted up her sunglasses and looked over at Y/n. Nami was right, she should’ve expected this from the ero-cook but she couldn’t help herself; Sanji looked to cute.
“I know, I know. But Sanji just looked so cute. I mean, when was the last time he looked cute and didn’t make those stupid faces. and plus he knows everything about me, so you can’t blame me for wanting to keep at least one thing a secret from him.” Y/n defeaned then pointed to her lips and exclaimed, “But I never wanted this!!”
“Someone as naïve as you should not be dating someone like Sanji.” Nami shook her head. Her brown eyes had quickly fallen on the certain blonde cook as he made his way over to the 3 of them. Before he approached them he put out his cig and shoved his hand back into his pocket, fiddling with something. Y/n who was leaning back into her chair with her eyes closed didn’t even hear him approach them. Only when Sanji had pushed a few piece of hair out of her face did she jolt awake. Seeing his blue eyes, Y/n took a defensive state waiting to see if he was gonna kiss her again. A soft chuckle left his lips before he looked over at the girls and fell right back into character.
“Nami-sawnn~~ Robin-chwann~~ Lunch is ready~!!” Sanji swooned as he spun in front of the 2. They glanced over at Y/n for a moment but then back at Sanji. Thanking him, they left the 2 alone on the main deck. It was probably the best thing to do for now. Seeing the smirk on his lips when he looked over at Y/n and the way he played with something in his pocket, Nami and Robin had figured that Sanji had finally found the answer to his question. Robin let out a soft giggle while Nami sighed heavily as they made their way to the kitchen. Once the 2 had left the couple alone, Sanji took a seat next to Y/n. She watched him with a close eye, making sure he doesn’t pull a fast one. He let out a chuckle as he finally pulled out what he was playing with in his pocket. Y/n raised an eyebrow as she eyed the object but it didn’t take long before her fact lit up with relief.
“Underneath our pillows is not the best hiding spot.” Sanji stated, placing the tube of chapstick onto the table next to them. “Oh thank god! I was scared you were never gonna find it and this game was gonna go on all day.” Y/n let out a heavy sigh as she adjusted herself in her seat, “Just for the record we are never doing that again.”
“You were the one who started it?”
“Yeah I know, and I was stupid. If you kissed me anymore my lips were gonna fall off.” Y/n pointed to her red swollen lips, “Look. They’re all swollen. Now imma have to put Chopper’s nasty medicine on them.”
“Ohh~ but I couldn’t help myself, Y/n-chwann~~!! Your lips are just so soft and cute~~!!” Sanji swooned as he engulfed Y/n into a hug. She let out a shreak from the sudden hug. As much as Y/n loves Sanji, she is so over him today. From all the kisses Y/n wanted more than to be left alone for a day or 2, however Y/n knows she just can’t get rid of Sanji that easily. Maybe that’s what she loves him so much because no matter what Sanji’s always there, whether she wants him to be or not. From kisses, to laying in bed together, to just enjoying each others company, he’s always with her. Even though Y/n was annoyed with him, she couldn’t help but smile as she squirmed against him.
“S-sanji let go. I wanna eat my food before Luffy does.” Y/n laughed, trying to break free from his grip. However, he wasn’t gonna let go anytime soon.
“You know I always save you a plate.” Sanji loosed his grip on Y/n as his hands fell down to her waist. She decided to stop squirming against him and just enjoy his warmth. They sat in silence for a moment, simply just enjoying each other company and listening to the waves crash against the ship. Moment like these were always the best to Y/n. Doing nothing and just enjoying each other presences, however, seeing how it’s lunch time, Y/n just wants to eat. She squirmed against him once again finally telling him to let go. Y/n had wasted no time making her way to the kitchen either, with Sanji following close behind her.
“So..” Y/n started, grabbing Sanji’s attention. The hum from him had told Y/n she could continue, “Which flavor did you like better?”
“Hmm...” Sanji trailed off, trying to remember the flavor of mint. He was used to the minty flavor but the new fruity flavor wasn’t bad either. Y/n looked up at Sanji trying to read is facial expression to get a hint or something to see what flavor to get next time. Before she could even process the look on his face, Sanji dipped down again and capture Y/n’s glossed lips once again. She gasped once again, surprised that Sanji kissed her again even after she told him her lips were swollen. Luckily the kiss didn’t last long, Sanji pulled back and licked his lips, tasting the flavor of artificial strawberry. Y/n puffed out her cheeks in frustration from the kiss while Sanji finally gave his answer.
“The strawberry flavor isn’t bad. I like that one.” Sanji answered as the 2 of them stopped right in front of the kitchen door.
“M’kay.” Y/n nodded, noting the information, “Good then because after today I'm only gonna switch between these 2.”
“Huh? Your not gonna change it again?” Sanji asked, sounded disappointed.
“Of course not.” Y/n stated as if was common sense. He let out a disappointed sigh at the fact that he wont be able to kiss Y/n that much again but now that he thinks about it, he probably did take it a bit over board. He had good intentions though. Y/n spun around on her heel and faced the door but right before opening it, she glnaced back at Sanji and added on, “Oh and to let my lips heal, not kissing for 2 days. At least!”
“Whaa-! 2 days!? But Y/n-chwan I can’t do that. I gotta kiss you.”
“Well you should’ve thought about before you kissed me every 5 minutes today. You probably have enough kisses from me to last 4 weeks.”

For Olivia
Summary: Line cook Johnny "Coco" Cruz has made many bad decisions in his life, but his biggest regret is not being a part of his children's lives. He reconciles with his teenage daughter, Letty, so he’s hopeful when he shows up on his four-year-old daughter’s doorstep. Shanice Hunter, a newly-appointed guardian, is determined to protect Olivia from anything— even if that means her own father. Story Warnings (overall): Other than some mild language and alcohol/drug use, this is some pretty fluffy stuff. For me, anyway. Multi-chapter. Pairing: Chef!Coco x Black!OC Words: ~1.3k
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter One They’ve never met. She’s never even seen a picture of him. But when Shanice opens her door and sees the tattooed man standing in her doorway, she immediately knows that he’s Johnny Cruz.
The process isn’t as long as everyone warns her it would be, but it is incredibly tedious. There are complicated forms to fill out and hearings to attend, but she forces herself to trust the process. She’s patient. And after three months, she officially becomes the legal guardian of the four-year-old girl standing beside her.
Their things are unpacked, yet Shanice keeps the flattened boxes stacked in the storage room on the deck. It’s been weeks since moving into this new apartment, and fear keeps her from tossing the boxes. She’s afraid some technicality will delay the process, or that her best friend, Mel, will change her mind about the whole thing.
But Shanice is awarded guardianship almost too easily, but she wraps her arms around Olivia tightly when it’s official. They hug this way every night after they kneel and send their prayers off with soft ‘amens.’
The embrace comforts Shanice more than it does the little girl whose body has lost way too much weight. Olivia’s much too young for all of life’s uncertainty. She’s already learned not to trust a promise, and her appetite wavers without something definitive. She pushes food around the plate at every meal as the not yets and the soons get old, sometimes forcing spoonsful of her dinner down for Shanice’s benefit.
Olivia’s small hand holds onto Shanice’s pinky and forefinger as she looks up at the man in the doorway. He stares back at her, shoulders suddenly heavy now with what Shanice will later learn is shame. He’s looking down at what has flourished in his absence.
Shanice sometimes tries to imagine his face, but he’s shapeless in her mind, and it’s hard to put a face to something without form. To catch smoke in her hand. Olivia has the same round, expressive brown eyes that give her away, and she has those same ears that are too big for her head.
Johnny’s ears are even more emphasized by his long hair that he tucks behind them. Tattoos peak out from the cuffs of his sleeves and the neck of his sweatshirt like weeds slipping through cracks in a wall.
He clears his throat before taking a half step forward. There are so many features that he and Olivia share, but his are masked in a furtive shadow even as he’s flooded with light from her apartment. Entirely too nondescript. He’s wearing dark jeans and an unmarked black hooded sweatshirt like he’s been trying to stop the darkness from clawing at his back.
Shanice shields Olivia, pulling her back and out of view when he inches forward.
“Sorry to come at you so late at night,” he says, tearing at the silence. “Uh, I’m Coco- I mean, I’m Johnny Cruz, Miss. Can we talk?”
“Go to your room, Olivia,” Shanice tells the girl, but it sounds as though she’s scolding her.
The curt tone is misdirected, meant for the recognizable stranger at the door. She looks behind her and watches as the little girl’s eyebrows weave together with confusion. She retreats to her new room with half her attention still focused on the door. Shanice gives a tight smile, attempting to reassure Olivia as the door pushes in but doesn’t completely shut.
“She’s beautiful,” the man lets fall from his mouth in a small yet untidy heap.
When the doorbell rings, Shanice thinks it’s the pizza she’d ordered for dinner that Wednesday. She still has the money in the pocket of her pajama pants, but she wished she’d brought the metal bat she keeps under her bed instead.
Johnny. She might have heard the name mentioned years ago, but the memory feels like a faded dream or a faint taste of déjà vu on her tongue.
“What do you want?” Shanice nearly pushes the words at him through her teeth as she speaks. She’s asking so much more with her question.
Are you going to take her away?
“You don’t gotta worry about me fuckin’ up your home or nothing,” he starts, clearing his throat more out of apprehension than necessity. He continues his researched speech, “I don’t wanna disturb nothing you got goin’ on here. I’m tryna make some amends in my life, and I’d be grateful if you would allow me to meet her.”
“How is meeting her not a disruption?”
He shakes in head, frustrated. “Naw, I meant…I’m not here to ask no custody or no bullshit like that.”
“You goddamn right, because I’ll kill you before I let that happen.” It’s intended mostly as a figure of speech, but she steps forward with one hand clenching the doorknob and the other clenching the money in her pocket. There isn’t anything figurative about the way she feels then as her hands tremor.
But Johnny doesn’t even seem surprised. This is something he must have expected from the list of imagined scenarios.
Out of the corner of her eye, Shanice sees the pizza delivery boy walking up the stairs with her food, and she suddenly realizes how the scene must look. She’s in a faded UCLA shirt and fuzzy pajama pants as her eyes are wide with every bit of contempt her body can muster. She relaxes her eyes, then her limbs follow as she finally remembers to breathe.
“Um, large pepperoni pizza?” the delivery boy tentatively puts forward the food, extending his lanky arms.
“Like I said,” Johnny begins. “I’m not tryna to inconvenience you or her, so I’m gonna go. If you wanna reach me…”
She watches as Johnny pulls a worn piece of paper from his pocket and slip it in the fold of the pizza box before turning and running down the steps of her place.
It takes a too-long, awkward moment to pass before Shanice remembers the delivery boy is still standing off to the side with containers of food in his scrawny hands. She apologizes as she slips him the money while simultaneously grabbing the boxes and she’s soon back inside the apartment. As Shanice puts the chain on the door, she has the strong urge to barricade it with the couch.
“Mushroom!” Shanice calls out as she washes her hands at the kitchen sink. “Pizza’s here!”
The door to Olivia’s room slowly opens and she looks around the living first before walking out of the room.
“C’mon, come wash your hands,” Shanice beckons from the sink.
Olivia joins her at the sink, pulling her step stool from the corner of the kitchen. She glances up at Shanice, squishing soap suds between her fingers.
“Who’s’at man?” Olivia blurts out.
There it is.
Shanice knows the inquiry must eventually come, but she doesn’t expect it this soon. Not before she has time to think of what to say.
“He’s just…” she shakes her hand, accidentally pumping more soap back on her hands to rinse for the second time. “He’s an old friend,” Shanice manages.
“How come you looked so mean at him?”
“Well, he’s mommy’s friend-”
“Oh,” Olivia’s eyebrows knit again, completely understanding. She’s seen a lot of Mel’s friends- old and new and temporary. “So…” Her face contorts with one eye scrunched as if she’s looking through a kaleidoscope. “…so he bringed a pizza?”
“No, Mush,” Shanice laughs at the conclusion Olivia draws. “I’m hungry, are you hungry?”
Olivia’s attention lands on the warm pizza now on their counter, but her favorite are the garlic rolls. Shanice is fearful that Olivia will go back to pushing her food around every time a meal is presented. Her cheeks are slowly beginning to fill, though. The childish chub is returning to her face as her appetite slowly begins to pick up. She’s less folded into herself, walking more like a child and less like a shadow.
They eat on the couch, watching A Goofy Movie while Shanice is the one who picks at her dinner tonight. Her stomach is in deep twists and doesn’t leave any space for anything else as she thinks of what’s to come from Johnny Cruz.

There is one thing that Henry has always wanted in life and that was getting married and having a family of his own. Growing up with four brothers, he always envisioned himself being surround by a beautiful wife, with lots of kids.
But he has reached the age of thirty seven and though he hasn’t got a lot to worry about—his biological clock isn’t ticking—he thought that by now, he’d at least have a wife and one kid.
Now he only has Kal, his loyal canine that he adores with all his heart. He takes a sip of his beer, as he watches some lame romantic comedy. It’s Friday night and as a single man, he could be on a date of course, but his profession as an actor, makes it even harder to date.
Most women are either in it for the fame and his money.
He witnessed his relationships crumble apart and now he is back being single, sitting on the couch with his dog, staring at a television screen. Last year he was thinking about starting a family, but he pushed it aside, enjoying his life as an actor. The movies he did were going great, but after the latest movie he did…
It was kind of a flop. It didn’t meet up to the expectations of the public and since that moment, he has been living a quite boring life, not thinking about taking any other offers. He wakes up, walks Kal and thinks about ways to meet the love of his life.
Henry isn’t so sure anymore about his acting career.
His mind wanders during the movie. He thinks about a future with a wife and kids. He can already see it happening: he would roll over in bed, wrap his arms around the love of his life, to slowly wake her up, before their kids would rush into the room and jump on their bed. He can imagine his beautiful wife sitting on the kitchen counter, with a few mini versions of them sitting next to her, as he is cooking for the entire family.
Henry rubs his face, fatigue kicking in. He shuts off the television and gives the big bear a kiss on top of his head. ‘You want a little something to eat before you go to bed?’ he asks Kal.
Kal wags his tail as an answer, accompanied with a bark.
Henry can’t help but chuckle.
It can pretty hard training Kal, but with the right amount of snacks, this dog can listen to him. Sometimes he even thinks that Kal can read his mind.
They go to the kitchen and he gives him a little kibble before he sleeps. He opens up the newest Doggy Herb bag and notices a slight change in color, but he shrugs it off. He bought Doggy Herb since the day he got Kal, so maybe there is more meat in this one that in the previous ones. He throws some in a bowl and watches as Kal gulps it all up.
The two of them walk up the stairs when Kal is done eating and he gets himself ready for the night. Henry stares at the sink in the bathroom, noticing the space that is left, because he doesn’t have anyone to share it with.
Before he can feel totally sorry for himself, he spits out the toothpaste and walks to his bedroom. He strips down to his underwear and steps into the bed, Kal joining him on the sheets.
He watches Kal falling asleep almost instantly and hopefully Henry can do the same.
But he can’t.
His mind keeps racing, constantly racing. The terrible reviews of his latest movie, the way how women kept saying how they want to have his kids, but none of them is good enough. He wants to fall in love with someone, someone who understands him, who loves him for who he is. A woman that he has an instant connection with. A woman where he can be himself.
When he does fall asleep, Henry dreams about a faceless woman, who holds onto his hand, as they watch their little kids running around in the yard, Kal barking as he runs in between the giggling kids.
That’s all he wants.
Henry is about to give his faceless wife a kiss, when he wakes up from hurling sounds that definitely aren’t his. He opens his eyes, turns on the light on his nightstand, to see Kal puking out his kibble on the new carpet.
Great, exactly what he needs. This is why he can’t have new stuff.
Henry gets out of bed and sits next to his dog. ‘Bud, you okay?’ he asks, but Kal’s legs give out and he collapses to the floor. His eyes are still open, but he whimpers and his breathing isn’t going as steady as it normally is.
‘No, no, no, Kal,’ Henry says, panic dripping through every word he speaks. He tries to find his phone as quickly as possible and Googles ‘Animal Clinics London’. He calls three different clinics, but none are picking up, not even the one that he usually goes to. He sees one that is an hour away, but in all honesty, Henry would arrange a private jet to fly them off to a vet that did pick up the fucking phone and he didn’t even care if he had to travel to another continent.
The phone rings twice, before he hears: ‘Animal Clinic Westside, doctor Olivia Tran, how may I help you?’
The woman sounds friendly, that’s a good start. ‘Hello, I’m terribly sorry for calling at this hour, but my dog is vomiting and I see some blood in it. He collapsed and is breathing really heavily and I don’t know what to do.’
‘Sir, it’s okay,’ she says. ‘Did your dog eat anything out of the ordinary today?’
He doesn’t even know for sure. ‘Not that I know of.’
‘You think it’s possible for you to come to the clinic? I’d like to see the dog.’
‘Of course, of course,’ Henry says.
‘I hope it’s not too much to ask, but could you take some of the vomit with you? Especially the part with some blood. I’d like to check it.’
Doctor Olivia Tran could’ve asked him to bring three human kidneys and he’d bring it, anything for his Kal. ‘I’ll bring it with me, of course.’
‘What kind of breed is your dog, sir?’
‘An American Akita. His name is Kal.’ Henry strokes the fur of Kal, blinking away the tears.
‘I’ll be at the clinic in about forty minutes, mister…’
Henry picks up on what she’s trying to do. ‘Cavill and I can be at the clinic in about an hour.’
They hang up shortly afterwards and Kal lets out a soft whimper. ‘Hang in there, bud,’ he tells the dog. ‘You can’t die on me. You really can’t.’
≫≫≪≪
With a weak Kal in his arms, Henry rushes into the clinic, only to discover that doctor Tran is already waiting for him. He doesn’t know what he was expecting, but he certainly wasn’t expecting her. He is mesmerized by her dark brown eyes, her perfect lips and her hair that’s in a messy bun, a few strands framing her face.
This woman is beyond beautiful. He can’t believe that someone like her is even real. The way she tilts her head, while she scans him shamelessly from top to bottom, makes him feel all sorts of things.
He concludes he has been single for too long.
‘Mister Cavill?’ she asks, causing him to snap back into reality.
‘Yes,’ he hastily says. ‘That’s me.’
‘Follow me.’ She walks in front of him, into the first examination room. Her fingers tap on the table and he gently places his dog on the hard surface. She strokes the fur on top of Kal’s head. ‘Let’s see what’s with you,’ she says, putting on some gloves. ‘You brought the samples?’
‘Yes, yes, I did,’ he says, clearing his throat. He shouldn’t be mesmerized by the vet in front of him, but he can’t stop staring at her. He hands her the bag and she sets it aside, while she opens Kal’s eyes, looking into them.
Before he can say something else, he hears small footsteps echo into the room. ‘Can I watch?’
Henry looks up, to see a small girl standing in the doorway. This must be the daughter of doctor Tran, because that girl is the spitting image of the woman standing in front of him. The doctor does look young though, almost too young to have a daughter who is at least five years old.
He needs to shake the thought of the doctor off of him, he tells himself. She has a daughter, so there is a plausible chance she’s taken.
Doctor Tran doesn’t look up from her clipboard, while she’s scribbling something down. ‘If mister Cavill doesn’t mind.’
The young girl looks up at him, two hopeful eyes meeting his. ‘No, of course not,’ he says, his heart melting at the sight of the hopeful look in her eyes.
The little girl walks over to the examination table, dragging a stool with her. She stands next to Henry and even when she’s standing on it, she can barely peek over the edge of the table. ‘Mommy,’ she asks, confirming that the little girl is indeed doctor Tran her daughter, ‘should I introduce myself?’
The doctor nods, while she checks the vomit, scrunching her nose. ‘That’s the polite thing to do, sweetheart.’
The girl holds out a tiny hand and says: ‘My name is Vanessa Tran.’
‘Hi Vanessa,’ Henry says in a soft voice, before holding onto her hand, that nearly disappears in his. ‘My name is Henry Cavill and this is Kal.’
Doctor Tran looks up from the bag of vomit. ‘Henry Cavill?’ she asks. ‘Isn’t there an actor whose name is Henry Cavill?’
‘Yeah, there is.’ Henry chuckles, feeling a bit awkward, but also amused that she doesn’t recognize him. It’s nice to be unrecognizable, even if it’s for a short amount of time. ‘That actor would be me.’
Her eyes widen. ‘Oh,’ she says, but she can’t seem to find the right words to say.
‘Mommy, is this man famous?’ Vanessa asks, while not breaking eye contact with Henry. The little girl blinks her eyes, almost in disbelieve that someone famous is standing next to her.
Doctor Tran pulls herself together. ‘Yes, sweetheart, he plays in some movies. He even played Superman.’
Vanessa widens her eyes as well and yet again she looks just like her mother. ‘Wow, Superman is here.’ She starts to giggle, a sound that Henry already adores. ‘So, if you are Superman, you are really strong.’
‘He is,’ doctor Tran says, placing the vomit samples aside. ‘He carried his dog inside.’ Henry can’t help but beam with pride as he takes in the compliment from the doctor.
‘Wow,’ Vanessa says again. She holds out her arms and asks him if he can lift her up. Henry looks over at the doctor, who smiles and simply nods, a non verbal sign of consent.
Henry lifts the little girl up in his arms and she wraps an arm around his neck.
‘I can’t wait to tell miss Sue that I met Superman.’
He can’t help but laugh, the little girl and her comments already making him feel less scared about what can happen to Kal. ‘Doctor Tran,’ he finally says, ‘is everything okay with Kal?’
‘What kind of kibble do you give him?’ she asks, while she is checking his heartbeat.
‘Doggy Herb,’ he answers, while Vanessa is tugging his curls, pulling on one strand until it’s straight, before letting it go and watching it curl together again. ‘Why?’
She looks up. ‘Well, then the news hasn’t reached you yet. We’ve had multiple cases of dogs who started to vomit after they ate the Doggy Herb kibble, some of them included blood. The manufacturer changed something in the ingredients and now lots of dogs have severe reactions to it.’
This woman demands all of his attention, without even trying. She is absolutely breathtaking and if she wasn’t talking about his sick dog, nor had a daughter, he’d ask her out.
‘Oh.’ Henry feels guilty. ‘I thought there was something different about it. I opened a new bag today.’
‘How much did you gave him?’
‘A little bit, at around eleven,’ he answers.
She smiles and without her telling him something, he already feels more at ease. ‘Then you have nothing to worry about. I’m going to put an IV on him, so he can rehydrate a bit. After that I’m going to give him some medicine and I’ll give you something to give him at home. In about three hours, you can take him home with you again.’
‘Really?’
She nods. ‘Really, sir. If you could place him on the floor? That would be easier for Kal and me.’
‘I’m sorry, miss Vanessa,’ he says, before he gently places the girl back on her feet. He shouldn’t feel this desperate need to impress the doctor. However, he can’t help but flex his muscles a little bit, as he carries the dog to the corner of the examination room.
‘Wow, mommy, he is really strong,’ Vanessa says.
‘No wonder he was Superman,’ doctor Tran says. She looks through some drawers and says: ‘I figure you want to wait here.’
‘I do, I do,’ he says.
‘If you want, you can grab something to drink around the corner. Maybe a coffee will help you stay awake.’
Does he look that miserable? Does he look that tired?
‘I can tell you how the machine works,’ Vanessa says. ‘I know how it works.’
‘That would be nice,’ he admits. Vanessa takes ahold of his hand and tugs him with her. He follows the little girl and he sees himself in the reflection of a mirror that’s right next to the coffee machine.
He does look miserable. His eyes are still red from the bit of crying he did when he drove to the clinic and the bed hair looks like multiple crows have been nesting there.
‘My mommy is going to make Kal better,’ Vanessa says, before grabbing a paper cup. ‘You don’t have to worry.’
‘I wasn’t worried,’ he tells the young girl, but the second it leaves his lips, he realized he only said that to impress the doctor. God, he is lying to a little girl, just to impress her mother, who isn’t even in the same room. For all he knows, the woman is married and the girl’s dad is at home.
But, come to think of it, why would she take her daughter to work then?
Vanessa starts to frown and she takes a step to the side, so she’s standing in the doorway. ‘Mommy, can I tell Superman he is lying and that you’re not supposed to lie?’
He can hear doctor Tran laughing. ‘You can tell Superman that, sweetheart.’
Henry feels a little finger poking his thigh. ‘Superman, you are lying and you’re not supposed to lie. My mommy says that you should tell the truth, especially about your feelings.’
He is genuinely impressed. This young girl is really in touch with her own feelings and can verbalize it. That’s extraordinary for someone her age, he thinks to himself. Doctor Tran is doing a good job with raising her.
‘I’m sorry,’ he says to Vanessa. ‘I’ll try to be better.’
‘You should, you are Superman after all.’
He has a paper cup filled with coffee and they accompany Kal and the doctor again. She hands Vanessa a juice box and says she needs to fill in some paperwork, but that the two of them can keep Kal company.
Vanessa and Henry stare at Kal, while Vanessa is slowly stroking his fur. It’s obvious that she’s growing more and more tired with every passing second, but she is desperately trying to stay awake. It’s really endearing, if Henry’s being honest and really not helping with his own baby fever.
‘My mommy is also a superhero,’ Vanessa says. ‘Not like Superman of course, but she always saves animals.’
‘Well,’ Henry says, unintentionally loud enough for doctor Tran to hear it, ‘your mom is an even better hero than Superman.’
That confuses her, because she frowns. ‘Why?’
‘Because I play Superman. It’s pretending. Your mom is not pretending.’
He watches Vanessa nod, as she is taking in what he just said. ‘Yeah, you are right. My mommy is a better hero.’ She sighs deeply. ‘Mister Henry, do you have kids?’
God, the girl is barely five or six years old, but she surely knows how to wrench his heart. ‘I don’t.’
‘Why not?’
‘Why not what?’
She rolls her eyes annoyed, probably thinking he is a slow one for not understanding. ‘Why don’t you have kids?’
He clears his throat. ‘I don’t have a wife,’ he says. ‘And you need two people for that.’
Her mouth falls open. ‘Well, my mommy doesn’t have a husband. I’ve always wanted a daddy,’ she admits with bitter sweet honesty. ‘But my real daddy didn’t want me.’
‘Enough, Vanessa,’ he hears doctor Tran say in a stern voice from the other room.
‘But mommy…’
‘No, enough. Don’t talk about that with strangers.’
‘But this man is not a stranger mom. He is Superman, he can help us.’
Doctor Tran walks into the room, an annoyed look on her face. She doesn’t say anything, just stares at her daughter, raising an eyebrow in the process.
Vanessa pouts. ‘Sorry.’
The doctor leaves the room again and Henry asks Vanessa about school, hoping the kid doesn’t start about her estranged father again, though he wants to know more about that and it is a convenience: doctor Tran is single from what she just told him.
He finds out that she is six and can already read what’s on the posters in the examination room. Even though this kid isn’t his own, he can’t help but feel proud, when she recites the entire alphabet and shows him that she can count to a hundred.
But all while she’s doing that, fatigue is catching up with her and eventually she falls asleep against his arm. He carefully lifts her up, hoping that he doesn’t wake her up and walks to the room where doctor Tran is currently doing some paperwork.
‘Oh, she’s asleep,’ she says when she notices Henry standing in the doorway.
‘Yeah, she was pretty tired.’
She smiles, before holding out her arms. ‘I’ll be right back,’ she says, as she holds her daughter close to her body. She leaves the room and probably will tuck her daughter in somewhere. He sits next to his dog, looks at him, looking less and less fatigued and more like his own happy go lucky self.
‘Kal is looking better,’ she says, while she crouches down next to the dog. Kal stares at her, almost with heart eyes. ‘I recommend you switch to something like Purina One, or something like that,’ she tells him. ‘Doesn’t matter, everything but Doggy Herb.’
‘Is it deadly?’ he asks. ‘The other kibble.’
She shakes her head. ‘Well, no, wait, that’s a lie. If you give him lots of it, it can be fatal.’
‘I feel so stupid.’
The doctor looks at him. ‘Don’t,’ she says. ‘From the looks of it, you are a great owner.’ She checks the bag with fluids and says: ‘I want him on the scale for a second.’ She removes the IV from him, but from the looks of it, Kal is too tired to move.
‘Why on the scale?’
‘To determine how much of the medicine he needs,’ she tells him. ‘We don’t want to OD him, do we?’
It’s almost a cruel joke, but he can’t help but laugh. This woman is quite something and he is seriously intrigued.
Henry is yet again going out of his way to impress the beautiful doctor, but her facial expressions don’t give away much. She turns on the scale and writes down what she sees. ‘You can place him there,’ she says, pointing near the entrance. ‘Maybe the view will help him a bit. He should get moving in about half an hour.’ He places his furry companion near the door and Kal can move his head up, staring to the silent outside world, all still too deep asleep. When he looks at the doctor again, she taps the screen of the scale. ‘Now I know how much you both weigh, but I need Kal’s weight.’
Why is he feeling insecure? She’ll probably know that his weight is mostly muscle, that is shows his hard work. He steps on the scale and watches her scribble something on the paper. When Henry steps off, he notices her frown. ‘What?’ he asks.
‘This only confirms what I thought.’
‘What?’ he asks again.
‘Mister Cavill, your dog is kinda fat.’
She could’ve slapped in across his cheek and he wouldn’t be as surprised as he is now. Kal is fat? ‘Excuse me,’ he says in a defensive tone, crossing his arms in front of his buffed out chest. ‘My dog isn’t fat.’
Doctor Tran doesn’t seem impressed by his facade at all. ‘He is,’ she tells him. ‘An average American Akita weights between the forty and sixty kilos. Your dog weighs seventy kilos, while he should be between the fifty and sixty kilos.’
‘It’s muscle.’ Geez, he never thought he could get this defensive.
The doctor tries to hide a smile and her overall amusement, but she is failing miserably. ‘It’s fat, I already felt that back in the examination room.’
‘But how is he too fat?’
She shrugs. ‘You feed him too much, I guess. I’m not there with you when you feed him.’
‘I give him the prescribed amount of kibble.’ And a bit more, but his dog can’t possible get fat from that, right?
‘Do you train Kal?’
He nods. ‘I do.’
‘And do you give him snacks?’
He searches though his pocket and finds a chunk that he usually gives Kal during training.
‘How many do you give him?’ she asks, studying the snack as she takes it from him.
‘About twelve of those during a training session and I do those about two or three times.’
’No wonder he is fat.’
Does the doctor need to be this crude? His dog nearly died, could she show him some compassion?
‘Mister Cavill, this is the size of a pound,’ she tells him. She breaks it into four smaller bits and adds: ‘Dogs don’t care about the size of their snack. Instead giving him one of those, giving him a fourth, isn’t something he’ll notice.’
Henry sighs deeply, embarrassed of his defensiveness. ‘I’m sorry,’ he says.
‘For getting defensive?’ she guesses. ‘Oh no, it’s totally understandable. Someone is saying something about someone you care about. But, sir, it’s my job to make sure Kal is the healthiest he can be. Just give him seventy five percent of what you would normally give him, give him tons of walks and don’t give him the entire snack, just a quarter will do.’
He nods, taking the tips in. ‘Thank you, doctor Tran.’
≫≫≪≪
Kal is finally feeling better and Vanessa has woken up again. She is hanging around Kal’s neck, giving him tons of kisses. Kal doesn’t seem to mind, because he continues to lick Vanessa’s face when he gets the chance. Henry knew that his loyal dog was good with children, but this is on another level.
‘I’m sorry that I called,’ he says to doctor Tran, who is leaning against the counter, her white coat hanging open, revealing a thick looking sweater.
‘Why? Your dog was sick and you called a vet. It’s okay, I knew what I was doing when I sighed up for the job.’ She looks at her daughter and adds: ‘Besides, I think I have a very tired, but very happy six year old for the weekend. She got to pet a lovely dog and met Superman. Honestly, I should thank you for calling our clinic.’
Henry lets his gaze drop on the petite doctor that is standing next to her. He doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but he certainly does believe in attraction at first sight. It has been a long time since Henry met a woman like doctor Olivia Tran. She blatantly told him his dog was fat and told her daughter that she could say to “Superman” that he was lying. She is definitely something else and he hates it that he has to leave now.
‘Well, thank you,’ he says, ‘for helping out Kal. I don’t know what I would’ve done if he didn’t make it.’ He holds out his hand and the doctor leaves him hanging for a good second, before she places her slender hand in his, adding: ‘It’s my job, mister Cavill.’
‘Henry, please, call me Henry.’
She nods. ‘Okay, Henry, I’ll see you in a few weeks, for his yearly shots he needs to have according to his passport and we have to check if you are a strict enough owner, because this little fatty needs to lose some weight.’ She lets go of his hand, before scratching the Akita behind his ears.
‘Mommy, can we have a dog?’
‘No, angel, we can’t,’ she says. ‘So give Kal one last kiss and say goodbye to Henry, okay?’
Vanessa does what her mother tells her to do, because she gives Kal a kiss on his nose and walks over to Henry, who crouches down, so he is about the same height as the little girl. ‘It was very nice to meet you, Vanessa,’ Henry says.
She wraps her arms around his broad shoulders. ‘It was nice to meet you too, mister Henry,’ she whispers, still a bit groggy. She lets go of him and walks to her mom, holding onto her hand tightly.
‘Thank you, again.’
‘Of course,’ doctor Tran smiles. ‘And I’ll see you in a few weeks.’
He steps out of the clinic with Kal and sighs deeply. This was quite something, he thinks to himself. As he walks towards his car, he looks over his shoulder, only to see Vanessa being picked up by her mother, balancing on her hip. The two of them wave to him and he smiles, holding out his hand and waving back.
When he gets into his car, Kal sitting next to him, he lets out a groan. He shouldn’t have a crush on this vet, he really shouldn’t.
But Henry keeps thinking about how doctor Tran stared at him, how Vanessa hugged him and how his dog seemed to be at ease with them, loving the doctor from the looks of it and adoring the attention Vanessa gave him.
He forces himself to stop thinking about this, because for all he knows, this is the last time he would see either of them. He doesn’t even know if his favorite veterinarian will be helping him when he gets back in a few weeks for Kal’s shots. ‘Forget about it, Henry,’ he tells himself sternly. ‘You’re not a teenager anymore, with a crush on someone he can’t date anyway.’

A/N: Day 22 for @honeymandos December Writing Challenge!
Ugh, I love Connie so much.
Hope you enjoy!

Tumblr media
Christmas in Colombia is certainly different from what you’re used to.
During the hunt of Escobar none of you were able to go back home so you could celebrate Christmas with your families. It would be a lonely Christmas if it wasn’t for Connie who invited you and Javier over every year to spend Christmas with her and Steve. And Olivia now too.
She would cook the best dinner anyone could get, with the sweetest and most delicious desserts.
You were grateful to have her and to know her. Without them, Christmas in Colombia would probably be depressing and sad.
And you wouldn’t be able to celebrate it with Javier.
Javier had turned your world upside down the day you first met. His warm brown eyes and soft smile swept you off your feet, but you soon learned that this love was doomed to be a losing game.
He regularly slept with informants to get information and hints. Other times he would just sleep with them because he wanted to. And you heard most of it, with your bedroom right next to his.
Unfortunately, that didn’t stop you from falling in love with him. You fell further down that hole and nothing could stop it.
One day, you had spent the afternoon with Connie and told her how you felt for him.
“Whatever he does, even if he does absolute jackshit, I fall in love with him at such a rapid speech. I don’t know why. It just breaks my heart more and more because I know it’s never going to work. He doesn’t see me like that, I’m just his partner, that’s it. It doesn’t even seem like he wants a relationship at all, he’s always sleeping with so many different women. Which is not necessarily a horrible thing, but it just seems like he doesn’t want anything serious. Connie, I don’t know what to do” you had sobbed into your hands, angry at yourself for letting this go so far and for not stopping it.
“Darling, hey” she hugged you tightly and rubbed soothing circles onto your back.
“Love is a weird thing. It’s uncertain, but powerful. You don’t need much to fall in love with a person. It’s hard to stop and difficult to foresee. But maybe you should act on it. Tell him how you feel and have certainty. If he loves you or not, you need clarity for your own sake” she softly told you. Connie was right and you knew it but you were afraid to destroy the friendship you had with Javi.
So you didn’t act on it and kept your secret to yourself.
But Connie wouldn’t be Connie if she didn’t know both sides to a story.
And the other side to this story was that Javi loved you. He loved you like mad and it was so intense it scared him.
His memory of Lorraine scarred him and he thought he would never be able to find true love, fearing he would always mess up and destroy again what he loved most.
You.
Yes, Javier loved you. He didn’t know how it happened or when, but he knew that he did. It was a love he had never experienced before, not even with Lorraine.
This love he felt for you, it was huge. And wild. His heart would race whenever he was near you, face heating up whenever you laughed or giggled, thinking it was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard.
But he was afraid to admit it. To fully accept it. Because he thought he would definitely mess up and lose you again. Lose his heart.
And no matter how much Connie and Steve tried to reassure him to act upon his feelings, he didn’t do it. He’d rather kept the friendship with you intact than risk losing you completely.
And Connie wouldn’t be Connie if she didn’t use her knowledge about both sides to come up with a plan that would get you two to confess.
That plan was set for Christmas Eve.
Javier went to the Murphy’s with Steve right after work, but you wanted to take a shower first and get dressed nicely so they all know you will arrive later.
As Steve and Javier are engrossed in a conversation in the living room, she uses the situation to hang a mistletoe above the entrance door, hoping her plan would work out just like she imagines it.
You arrive around 7pm, knocking on the door loudly.
“Javi, could you please open the door?” Connie calls from the kitchen, just finishing up the food.
“Sure thing, Con” he calls back and then goes to the door to open it, revealing you standing in the doorway with a bright smile on your lips.
When he sees you, it feels like his heart just stops. You look absolutely breath-taking. Of course you always do, but on some nights, when you dressed up, you looked out of this world. No one could compare with you.
So he just stands there, staring at you with his mouth slightly agape.
Heat creeps up your face and you lower your gaze, a shy smile on your lips.
“Uhm… may I come inside, please?” you say, snapping him out of his head and blinking rapidly, face as red as a tomato.
“Yeah, sorry, come in” he flashes you a soft smile and steps aside to let you in.
“STOP!” Connie suddenly calls, standing in the kitchen doorway with the biggest grin on her face, indicating that she was up to something.
You both slightly jump at the sudden scream, looking at her in confusion. But she just points to a spot above your heads.
You both look up to see the mistletoe hanging right where you stand, both blubbering messes all of a sudden.
“Oh for heaven’s sake, it’s a tradition, you two!” she giggles. You look over at Steve for help, but he just shrugs his shoulders, obviously trying to hide a smirk of his own.
You turn your head to see Javi looking at you with big eyes, like a deer in headlights. But not taken aback, or disgusted. Just… nervous?
“I don’t think they’re letting us back in if we don’t kiss right now, I guess” you say, offering him a small smile. He nods, knowing you’re right.
Javi carefully cups your cheek in his hand and leans down slowly, giving you the opportunity to back off if you really don’t want to do this.
But you want it. So much. So you slowly close your eyes and slightly lean up until his lips meet yours in the softest and gentlest kiss imaginable. His lips mould against yours as if they were made just for each other, moving ever so slightly. You sigh contently and wrap your arms around his neck to pull him a little closer. He seems to relax at that, putting his other hand on your hip and slightly deepening the kiss.
The two of you stand there for a while, just kissing, enjoying this intimacy and forgetting about everything around you. That is until you hear someone clearing their throat behind you, making you break the kiss to see Steve standing there, looking a little uncomfortable.
But Connie sports a smile so big, you fear her face might split in half.
“I should be a professional matchmaker” she laughs before hopping back into the kitchen.
You giggle softly and look up at Javi. His eyes are soft and warm as he looks at you, a gentle smile on his lips.
“I guess we have to talk, amorcito.”

My July ‘20 - June ‘21 film ranking:
1.       His House (AKA ‘Walls… I Scream’) – A Sudanese couple seek refuge in the UK, but are unable to escape the horror they left behind. It’s a tried and tested horror formula: a strained family unit try to come to terms with shared trauma against the backdrop of a serious social issue. But it’s really well executed. The understated tone left me unprepared for the brazenly nightmarish imagery.
2.       Sound Of Metal (AKA ‘Deaf Becomes Him’) – A punk drummer and recovering addict deals with a sudden and severe loss of hearing. I wish I’d gotten to see more of Riz Ahmed drumming with his shirt off but maybe that’s point? The sudden silence hits Ruben and the viewer like a tonne of bricks with ‘point of hearing’ sound design ensuring you empathise. Olivia Cooke is great too and the desperate romance between addicts really appealed to the angsty teen in me, until it resolves in an appropriately mature way.
3.       The Dig (AKA ‘Ralph Fiennes A Boat’) – On the eve of World War II, a wealthy widow hires excavator Basil Brown to dig up an Anglo Saxon burial mound. The stakes are low but it’s just nice to spend time in the countryside with these characters. I normally like shaky-cam and creative sound mixing but both are overused enough to be a bit distracting. Where director Simon Stone really shines is with his handling of the cast, who give some great naturalistic performances, particularly Ralph Fiennes who seems to be channelling Toby Jones.
4.       Nomadland (AKA ‘Van Clan Thank You Ma’am) – After losing her home, unemployed widow Fern takes to the road to join the American nomads. Why are non-actors so good at acting? This is pretty light on characterisation, to the extent that it wasn’t until halfway through that I started to get a grasp of Fern’s personality, but it makes up for that by immersing you in the nomad culture, as well as showing you tonnes of lovely nature porn. Paid for by the tourism board of Nevada.
5.       Mank (AKA ‘So What If It’s Not Citizen Kane?’) – Alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz draws on his experiences of 1930s Hollywood while writing the screenplay for ‘Citizen Kane’. I was more interested than emotionally invested. The old timey aesthetic felt like a gimmick, and though it was cool to hear Nine Inch Nails playing jazz tunes, the black & white gave me a headache. The real highlight was the late Jack Fincher’s screenplay, with tonnes of snappy and insightful dialogue.
6.       A Quiet Place Pt. 2 (AKA ‘Now With Talking!’) Pursued by monsters with powerful hearing, the Abbot family struggle to survive after the apocalypse. Remind me to always see horror in the cinema from now on. The big screen and sound system, and your inability to pause for a pee break, make all the difference. Though I prefer the first ‘Quiet Place’, this was a scarier watch, by virtue of me seeing it in the theatre. ‘Pt 2’ mostly lives up to the original, but lacks the emotional punch of its ending, and suffers from being split into two plots that don’t overlap.
7.       In The Heights (AKA ‘I Am Not Throwing Away My Shop’) – An adaptation of the Tony award winning show about Washington Heights’ Latin American community. It’s not easy adapting a stage musical for the screen, particularly a good one. And while I’ll still credit Lin Manuel Miranda’s source material for any and all gooseflesh I got, director John M. Chu did a pretty respectable job, with some nice creative flourishes. A lot of changes were made, many to the film’s detriment, but some provided new opportunities for characterisation.
8.       Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (AKA ‘I Miss Theatres’) – A 1920s Chicago blues band embark on a tumultuous recording session. This has all the strengths and weaknesses of a play. The spectacles of cinema are done away with in order to spotlight the many duologues and monologues in a way that feels unnatural for a film. But the source material is excellent and the cast definitely do it justice.
9.       Tenet (AKA ‘Taco Cat’) – A mercenary known only as ‘The Protagonist’ gets caught up with time travel, a Russian oligarch and the threat of Armageddon. This is way too long and the endless, inaudible exposition gets dull very quickly but the inventive and heart-racing action sequences more or less make up for that. The male actors all play their roles with charisma while Elizabeth Debicki is left to do the emotional heavy lifting.
10.   Saint Maud (AKA ‘I’m Walking On Thumb Tacks Oh-oh’) – A hospice nurse and recent Christian convert believes she must save the soul of her terminally ill patient. I never say this, but Saint Maud should have been longer. The first seventy minutes go for slow building tension but that leaves the last half hour with not enough time to bring things to a head. The creepy atmosphere is carried by the music and visuals more than the understated performance of the two leads.
11.   Luca (AKA ‘Started Out As A Fish, How Did I End Up Like This?) – Young sea monster Luca ventures onto dry land to see the world with his friend Alberto. It’s a much breezier story than Pixar’s ‘heavy hitters’ but there’s nothing wrong with that. The underwater animation was so beautiful I was disappointed when things moved to dry land but fortunately the seaside setting was just as evocative. Plot-wise, it’s pretty standard coming-of-age fare, with any pubescent ‘awakenings’ relegated to subtext.
12.   Soul (AKA ‘Jazz’) – A New York school band teacher struggles to escape the ‘Great Before’ in time to play a gig with his hero. This is absolute treacle to the eyes and ears as you’d expect from Pixar, and the narrative theme, of living for the sake of it rather than obsessing over your goals, is insightful and well delivered. The problem is that the story did too good a job of getting me invested in Joe’s hopes and dreams for me to be on board with his final epiphany. Perhaps it’s a lesson I still need to learn, and when I have, maybe I’ll appreciate ‘Soul’ more.
13.   News Of The World (AKA ‘Not Enough News’) – A travelling news reader takes a dangerous journey through post-civil war Texas to return a young girl to her relatives. This is one of the most unremarkable films I’ve ever seen. The plot is fine but predictable and its execution is forgettably competent across the board, with few distinguishing features. It adequately killed two hours of a lockdown evening, but then so would a screen of white noise.
14.   I’m Thinking Of Ending Things (AKA ‘The Arty-Farty Film For Clever Cloggses’) – A young woman goes to visit her new boyfriend’s parents as she contemplates ‘ending things’. This would have made a great short film in that it seems very deep and, for the 50 mins before I stopped watching, doesn’t really have a plot. Problem is it’s 135 mins long and I can’t take that much unbroken weirdness. Directing, acting and writing choices are all so offputtingly deliberate that watching it felt like listening to a band where every member is soloing at the same time.
15.   Uncorked (AKA ‘Billy Sommeliot’) – A young man from Memphis dreams of leaving his parents’ barbeque restaurant to become a sommelier. This is just kinda follows the formula of ‘young working class guy wants to do something his parents don’t approve of’. It’s competently made but not very imaginative and wastes the opportunity for some great food porn.

Pov Bishop
I sat in Templo alone until late, wondering what might go wrong. And in what swamp we got into, I did not come home. I preferred to stay here, especially since Olivia was spending her first night here. I installed myself in my dorm, woke up as usual before 7 am. I took a quick shower and went to the club kitchen for coffee. My attention was drawn to the noise outside, I looked at the watch hanging above the door. 7:23 a.m. showed the clues, theoretically no one should be here. I grabbed a cup of coffee and went outside, stood on the porch and looked around the terrace. And then I saw her, she was hiding in the corner of the square. She was wearing tracksuit pants rolled up to her knees and a hooded sweatshirt. Only now I could see that her left leg was also covered with ink. I smiled gently, she had headphones in her ears and jumped steadily. Sweat was flowing from her forehead, I wonder how long she had been on her feet for. Only after a while I noticed that her hands were wrapped with tapes. I looked at the prospectus that came out of her trailer. He came up to me and sat down on the couch next door.
- I have been watching her for over an hour - he smiled - and I already feel sorry for my brother.
- Why? - I wrinkled my eyebrows.
- It was trained by someone who has an idea about fighting. Angel can only have the advantage over her that he is higher. Even his strength won't help him.
- It can be a big harm to his ego - I laughed.
- Yes - he smiled broadly - pressure will you eat breakfast?
- How will you do - I looked at him.
- Sure -  he nodded his head.
I came back looking at her, she was walking towards the building.
- Good morning - I smiled at her.
- Good morning - she rolled up the headphones on her hand.
- Training ?
- Just a morning routine - she moved her arms.
- The prospectus is making breakfast - I picked up and followed her - come down in 20 minutes.
- I do not feel like it - she twisted her head.
- Prospect makes good breakfasts - I smiled wide.
- Good - she nodded her head - can we talk calmly afterwards?
- And about what? - I followed her into the club.
- About some rules and duties - she didn't even look at me.
- After breakfast, right ? - I went up to the bar.
- Sure - she nodded her head and went to the apartment.
- Something feels that it can be fun with her - Ezekiel stuck his head in the kitchen.
- My bones say the same thing and they are rarely wrong - I took a breath.
As soon as the food plates touched the bar she came down to us. She slipped on the stool next to me and overtook long colored hair.
- How did you sleep? - I took a look at her.
- I wasn't sleeping much - she purrred under my nose.
- It will get better every day - the prospectus said.
- Save those lovely speeches," she grew wild, "they kicked me out of my own family because my brother had such a vision. Anyway, he decided I must listen.
She was angry, angry with her brother that he sent her away. She was angry that he wanted to protect her when she wanted to fight, to fight for her family. I am not surprised at her, but in time she will understand his actions. She ate breakfast, looked at me and then at the prospectus.
- Thank you, let me know when you have a moment and we will talk.
- Sure - I nodded my head.
When she disappeared in the corridor, the boys entered the club.
- Who has the first shift today? - I looked at them.
- I - Angel spoke to them.
- And I - cried Coco.
- Okay, I nodded my head.
I put the fork on the plates, got up and improved my wick. Everyone was watching me with curiosity, I twisted my head and went to the apartment.
- And the present was worried about me trying to get into her bed - Angel yelled behind me.
The boys roared laughing, I turned to him in front and showed him my middle finger.
- We'll talk about it again, Reyes.
I saw a sudden change on his face, from amusement into fear. He may have been younger, taller and stronger than me, but he was still afraid of me. I moved through the corridor to the stairs and then upstairs, the door was ajar. I knocked quietly and slid my head inside. I looked around the room, sat at a desk with my legs rolled up and headphones in my ears. I smiled at myself, went inside. I approached her and looked over her shoulder. She leaned over the tablet and drew something, only after a while I recognized the drawing. It was the SAMCRO logo, a gloomy reaper. I put my hand on her shoulder, pinned her body and turned her head towards me. She needed a few seconds to relax and pull the headphones out of her ears.
- Fucking-- she murmured.
- I'm sorry - I took one step back - in my defence, I said I was knocking.
Pov Olivia
Only now have I had a real opportunity to look at President Mayans. Numerous wrinkles adorned his face, and a few scars on his cheek and neck were also visible. The mustache was a perfect match for the beard. Slightly gray but still dark, it looked good on him. Dark brown eyes could pierce the human soul. The wide and full lips encouraged to kiss them and every now and then the tongue showing up did not facilitate anything. I twisted my head and returned to the real world.
- What did you want to talk about? - He sat down in the chair and smiled.
I sat down on the chair and leaned my arms against the backrest.
- About the rules of this place - I looked at him - I think that these rules are not much different from those of the Sons, but I prefer to have this clarified.
- Everything that happens in this place is connected with the club stays in this place. You can see a lot of things that you are not allowed to take out of this place. You are a beautiful adult woman, a beautiful adult woman.
I will cut my hand off that by saying these words he blushed. I smiled under my nose and watched him as he continued.
- Some of the young people will certainly want to get into your bed - he breathed - I wouldn't want to...
- You wouldn't want this to happen and cause problems for the club - I interrupted him - don't worry about it. The second time I won't make the same mistake, only what they can get from me is in the mouth.
He laughed and relaxed.
- Feisty like Jackson, something feels like you're gonna put some of my guys up.
- Is that a challenge? - I've been moving my eyebrows a lot.
- I'd love to see how you handle them. - He lit a cigarette - but I'd prefer you and Angel not to go into the ring.
- Why ? - I frowned my eyebrows.
- He is a man, he is bigger, he is stronger and I bet he is agile. I wouldn't want Jackson to twist my head for hurting his sister.
I twisted my head and smiled from ear to ear.
- You really don't believe in my abilities, do you?
- You're a woman," he breathed, "even as Jackson's sister, I don't believe you can fight.
- The challenge accepted will show you all that you don't mess with me. - I laughed - since I'm staying here, I want to repay you somehow. I have seen your kitchen, there is nothing. I can cook for you if you do not have a person who makes breakfasts and other meals for you. I mean, I know how much the club can have classes and how little time to eat, but it's not a good idea to keep eating out.
- Sounds good - he nodded his head - and that's the new phone.
He took the device out of his pocket and put it on the table.
- If you need something, my number is 1, Tazy number 2, prospectus number 3.
- Okay - I nodded my head - I saw the condition of your fridge today, the shopping would be useful.
- Sure, take the brochure and go shopping, I'll give you the money.
- I have my own, no need to - I nodded my head - I just want to help if I'm stuck here anyway.
- I think that Tazie will need help at the junkyard, in the sense that neither of us likes paperwork.
- Sure, at home I kept the whole accounting of the club and a few businesses. I'll be happy to help, I'm not going to sit 24 hours a day in this room because it will go crazy. I'm sorry in advance but I'm sometimes explosive.
- Marcus has already warned me, all right - he nodded his head - until you kill someone.
I smiled, I didn't mean to kill anyone, but it is different.
- I will try.
- Is it even something - he nodded his head - are you drawing?
- Yes - I have risen - it is my passion but also a source of income.
- It is good to combine passion and income.
- Yes, I'm just working on a new inscription for the Sons' sweatshirt.
- I saw - he lifted up - unintentionally, but I saw when you are ready, just come down to us. I will tell the prospectus that you will go shopping.
- Obispo - I spoke to him when he stood in the door.
- Yes ? - He looked at me.
- Thank you for accepting me, I really appreciate it - I smiled.
- There is no need to thank you for that, we will give you a smoke - he laughed - feel at home.
- I appreciate it anyway, I am a stranger.
- Now you are a family, we will take care of you.
I smiled, returned the smile and went out closing the door behind me. I bit my lower lip and fell down on the couch. I dressed up in shorts, a shirt on my shoulders and tied a blue checked shirt through my waist. I made sure the scars on my back were not visible. I was fixing my hair and went to the guys. At the bar, as always, the prospectus was spinning.
- Ezekiel? - I wrinkled my eyebrows - remember well?
- Just Ez - he smiled wide.
- Can we go ? - I slipped the phone in my pocket.
- Sure - he nodded his head - I hope you won't drag me through the unknown how many stores.
- I'm not that kind of woman, I don't like shopping - we went outside.
- Bish we are going shopping, you need something ?
- When you're going, buy a beer, it's on the finish line and something for the fire. Tonight we will make a small sit-down. Take the meat from your father too.
- Sure.
I was looking at the square in front of the club, on the left side under the roof were motorcycles. They were lined up, different than the Sons had, but from a distance they looked quite good. They had a lot of chrome and I had the impression that they were made to attract attention.
Pov Bishop
I got up from the couch and looked at the bus leaving the square. I looked in the direction of the office, Angel stood in the door and smoked a cigarette.
- And you are paid to do nothing ? - I yawned at him.
- Calmly present, a moment of cigarette break.
