Mademoiselle De Lafontaine (1655–1738) wordt gezien als de eerste professionele balletdanseres.  Lodewijk XIV stond aan de macht in het beroemde Opera in Parijs. De Lafontaine heeft daarin met onder andere Jean Baptiste Lully een aandeel in de ontwikkeling van operaballet In 1681 ging Le Triomphe de L’amour (De Overwinning van de Liefde) in premiere, waarin ze samen danste met vrouwen in de hoofdrol. Voorheen werden vrouwenrollen vertolkt door mannen. De Lafontaine werd ook wel de koningin van de dans genoemd. Na tien jaar te hebben gedanst voor het Opera, trok ze het klooster in.

Activiteit 3 klassiek ; La gioconda in de Munt, Brussel

Het verhaal speelt zich af in het zeventiende eeuwse Venetië, waar samenzweringen en regatta’s de achtergrond vormen voor het verhaal van de zangeres La Gioconda. Tegen alle intrigies van de spion Barnaba in, offert ze alles op om haar geliefde Enzo en diens minnares Laura te redden.

La Gioconda is een vergeten meesterwerk uit de Italiaanse negentiende eeuw: een groots opgezet muziekdrama met zes hoofdrollen die de verschillende stemtypes beslaan, een groot orkest, enorme koorpartijen én het beroemdste operaballet ooit gecomponeerd. Het is een werk dat Amilcare Ponchielli schreef op een libretto van Tobia Gorrio. Het verhaal is geïnspireerd op het toneelstuk ‘Angelo, tyran de Padoue’ van Victor Hugo, geregisseerd door Olivier Py en gedirigeerd door Paolo Carignani.

La Gioconda is een operavoorstelling in vier bedrijven over liefde en macht - machtshonger, machtswellust en machtsmisbruik. Het vertelt het verhaal van de zuivere liefde van Gioconda voor haar geliefde Enzo die eigenlijk een ontrouwe minnaar blijkt te zijn en de zuivere liefde voor haar blinde moeder, La Cieca, waarover ze zich ontfermt. Maar haar liefde wordt niet beloont. Integendeel, in dit werk wordt alles wat zuiver en puur is vernedert, vernietigt en door het slijk gehaald. Heel specifiek door het personage Barnaba. Het is misschien wel het meest feministische toneelstuk van de vroege negentiende eeuw waarin vrouwelijke passie triomfeert over de mannelijke machtswellust. 

Regisseur Olivier Py toont geen feeëriek Venetië vol romantiek, maar wil juist afdalen in de diepste krochten van de menselijke ziel en de duistere zijde van het menselijke lijden en passie tonen. Hij vormt het podium om tot de onderbouw van het Dogenpaleis met ondergelopen kelders, een verontrustend beeld voor een maatschappij die de fundamentele menselijke waarden uit het oog verliest. Tegelijkertijd zorgt de voortdurende aanwezigheid van water voor schoonheid met de bewegende reflecties op de wanden van het decor. Ook het geluid van het opspattend water bij de choreografieën is een intrigerende toevoeging aan de akoestische beleving. De passie en de interpretatie voor en van de muziek is overduidelijk. De rollen van de solisten zijn evenwichtig verdeeld, voor ieder werd wel een duet of terzet gecomponeerd door Ponchielli. Hun uithoudingsvermogen is bewonderenswaardig. Het publiek verveelt zich geen moment. Kosten nog moeite werden gespaard om de aandacht te bewaren tijdens deze drie uur durende productie - enorme koorpartijen, een live symfonisch orkest, ballet, interessant ruimtegebruik van de coulissen tot de loges van het publiek, vuurwerk begeleidt het pauzenummer, prachtige kostuums bezet met pailletten, een uitvergroot angstaanjagend clownsmasker, maquettes van schepen die later in vlammen opgaan, enzovoort. 

La Gionconda is een extravagant werk dat ten onrechte zo zelden op de scène is gebracht. Tegelijkertijd is het een persoonlijke openbaring voor het genre opera. Het totaalpakket is indrukwekkend, ook met weinig kennis van of passie voor klassieke muziek. Meer zelfs, in dit geval schaadt overdaad zeker niet. Het is ideaal als eerste aanraking met een muziektheater. Het smaakt zelfs naar meer! Snel eens kijken of de volgende productie Frankenstein nog beschikbare tickets heeft… .

Award-winning garden designer Stuart Charles Towner at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018

Sited on Chelsea’s Main Avenue ‘Spirit of Cornwall’ is a multi-sensory experience: inspired by the work of renowned British sculptor Barbara Hepworth; and music composed by Leo Geyer Artistic Director Constella OperaBallet, specially commissioned by the Hepworth Estate and Tate St Ives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her garden.

‘Spirit of Cornwall’ has been conceived as a garden for a sculptor and a composer.

Contemporary in style, the garden features a palette of subtropical and temperate plants, illustrating the unique microclimates found throughout Cornwall. Concrete and steel form the only hard landscaping elements in the garden.

The metalwork that runs throughout the garden is a physical manifestation of the music, taken from the sound wave pattern, with its peak expressed by the garden pavilion, a space for composing and performing designed by award-winning architectural practice, Studio Evans Lane.

Water features echo the sea views from Hepworth’s garden. The continuous circulation of water reinforces the musical motif. Sculptures by Sheila Vollmer nestle amongst the planting, drawing inspiration from the rhythms of the garden design, and other sources such as Russian Constructivism.
